      same reason I love the grinder pits

  • @Pystro
    @Pystro Před 4 měsíci +3

    I think with tool shake, the only way to get a grinder pit to work is if you put the grinders into the "lid". I.e. you you drop/lower the grinders onto the wreck that sits in an inert box, or on a platform. You just have to set the hinge limits so that the grinders can't reach the platform.
    The one big difference to the normal arrangement is that small chunks that come off the big wreck fall _away_ from the grinders, and thus don't get touched by them. Which does mean that after the grinders are done, you have to go through and grind down the small leftover pieces, but the "pit" can do 90% of the work for you.
    [edit:] I posted this before 48:24 in the video.

      @NitroPulsar Před 4 měsíci

      He did this in survival maybe, way deep underground with grinders on pistons, pieces of scrap still managed to be flung around at superluminal velocities 🤣

    • @Pystro
      @Pystro Před 4 měsíci

      @@NitroPulsar If you are referring to Survival maybe episode 54, czcams.com/video/IIQLiocB7qo/video.htmlsi=tc4fGtC-DMXvklMs - that grinder pit still had 2 flaws:
      It was moving the grinders *sideways, not downwards.* If the grinders are below the wreck, then all of the small bits that come loose will drop onto the grinders; if the grinders are above, then all of the loose bits (at least those that don't stay stuck in place) will drop away from the grinders. But if the grinders are next to the wreck, then up to half of the loose bits will slide off the remainder of the wreck towards the grinders.
      And an even bigger mistake was to push the grinders *flush* against the back wall voxels to grind every last bit of scrap down. With tool shake, the only way to not get the light, small pieces to go super -luminal is to not ever let the grinders touch those smallest pieces. In order to do that, the AOE of the grinders has to stop at least half a small block short of the backstop surface, if not a full small grid block.
      Yes, that last restriction means that grinding something is at best going to be 90% automatic, but with some luck you have only one inventory worth of steel plates to grind down. And you can optimize your cargo access since you know where you'll be doing all your hand grinding.
      And yes, the bits you will have to hand-grind are the _most annoying_ ones, but the drones in the AAW scenario seem to drop at least a dozen griebling pieces even when you grind them down by hand anyways.

    • @NitroPulsar
      @NitroPulsar Před 4 měsíci

      @@Pystro no, i was referring to the pit that he built deep down below the main area of the garage, the one that he let the pieces slide from an accessway into a vertical hole and then had grinders on pistons coming down into the wrecks. He did leave enough space for the blocks to not be crushed against the voxels but even with that method, where supposedly the scrap parts should fly away from the grinders, he still had troubles with small pieces flying through the bottom (hence going through the planet) AND the roof, meaning there were pieces coming up into the garage floor.

    Honestly tool shake just needs to be done away with entirely, its actually quite unrealistic and only serves to decrease the number of viable options when it comes to scrapping and mining. Heavy equipment doesn't shake all over the place because its mass is what keeps it stable, and with lighter stuff you either brace the object or brace the tool and apply the object to it.

    One possible way to increase the accuracy of the rolling bombs would be to include a gyro, with remote controlled overrides. It'd take a bit of practice to learn to steer them, but it could be an interesting way to hit the target.

    Grinder pits work fine with tool shake on;you're just building them wrong; build an inverted pyramid with a collector at the bottom(for cargo that falls out) and have the walls be checkered with grinders; "pit of devouring" blueprint on the workshop can be used as a reference

    Most people that I play with and the servers I play have tool shake off. Grinder pits are amazing! Got about 7k hours in SE and have used grinder pits a lot. One time my faction created one as a station just in a gravity well and used it to cart ships into. Called it the Maw ^_^ Grinder ships are better though, if you have the tiered grinders mod setup otherwise, tier 3 hand grinders are best. The pits are for when you cannot be bothered to do it yourself, like busy fighting and you need more resources for new ships with the leftovers to print off a new ship quickly. As you do not PvP the way you do it works best. I am currently playing a SP version of Ares At War and it is fun!

    Have you tried using a stepped pulse grinding pit for small grids? Have one in single player that does maybe 1 in 20 or less ships have a bit that escapes the pit. Around 95% total grind rate in 1g with tool shake. Could figure out how to post it on the workshop if you have any interest.

  • @headp3

    What about using mass blocks with gravity drives for the bombs and a few small Hydro Tanks on the front for added punch?? Might also be able to make water to land missles and torps, since the base doesn't move its possible to "launch" something like this from outside weapons range. Unsure if these types of gravity drive weapons are against server rules or the spirit of the playthrough just a thought as you were attempting to bowl down the hill.

    To be fair, tool shake is indeed only good when the tool is smaller than the target so to speak. Thus it is indeed moronicly bad on the reverse, where the pit is bigger than the target. Grinders and welders were intended to be put on smaller work ships clearly. Honestly I think it would be better if they had incentives to do that. Most people want grind pits and weld walls to save time, and the small area and speed both nessecitates multiple tools. A better thing for server performance is faster, wide area single tools which both encourage smaller workhorses, and in these cases tool shake is more flavourful decoration than harassing irritations. Part of me wishes the tools worked more like From the Depths repair tentacles for both performance and practicality.
    Edit: Personally I just find it vomit inducing. Same as motion blur. My eyes already naturally apply this, why add a 2nd degree artificially? The game doesnt affect my cochlea's endolymph ear fluid, so my body cant naturally compensate for fake vibrations or visual distortion. Theres a reason 40-70% of people cannot use VR without nausia!

    I wonder if you take damage if you dive a ship into the water faster than the underwater speed limit? I also wonder since the water is a modified cloud (as far as I know) if anyone modding a planet has made a lower in atmo speed.

      @@sirhc1590 I'm not sure about wolves, I usually have them on by default so it's possible. AA bots are fairly rare, I've found. Ares at War ones are found in cockpits only it seems. In all other cases (outside other mods, MES etc.) bots are player-made using a block from the mod. I'm certain there would be tutorials on CZcams or on the mod's workshop page if you are still having issues, but I don't really know much more than what I've said. I hope this helps :)

    Hey Splitsie, I have noticed that when you are constructing something or demolishing same, that you spend a lot of time traveling back and forth to empty inventory or to pick up more construction bits. Would you consider building a "Follow Me" drone so you can park a large cargo container next to where you are working and with a chair you can top up power and add some light towers to improve visibility. Follow up question, how would you build it and set it up? Please reply with a step by step, bullet point presentation with screen shots of all the settings in the auto blocks and timer blocks etc. :)
