Electro Voice ND76 Review / Test

- Today we’re looking at a stage dynamic vocal microphone, the Electro Voice ND76. This is an alternative to the SM58, which offers more clarity and detail due to an 8dB boost around 6kHz, and also does a great job at rejecting handling noise and off-axis rejection, however, it doesn’t do the best at rejecting plosives.

Your delivery and sense of humour was much better than the mic. Happy New Year, Bandrew!
Happy New Year... looking forward to another year of reviews!
Thanks David. I look forward to reviewing stuff for another year. =)
The cheapest mic in my collection but one of my favourites for live. Not true that it so top heavy - it also adds or magnifies the upper mids which makes some voices (mine in articular) sound richer, especially when I start losing full power after a few days on the road. I often take this one to gigs over my Neumann - that's testament in itself!
As usual, great review! Happy New Year to you & yours...........Be well.................
Thank you so much. Happy new year to you as well.
Great review. Happy New Year
Thanks Tony. Happy new years to you as well.
Haha-That was a great surprise. Happy new year!
Happy new year,.
Happy New Year!
happy new year, Bandrew! :)
Happy new year to you as well PipoMaggi.
I was going to be very sad if you stopped throwing boxes. Also, Happy New Year!!!
I would never.
@@Podcastage Good!
Please do a review of the Electro Voice ND96
I like the sound better than the Shure SM58. Happy new year!
Same. I personally enjoy the treble boosts in ones such as this.
That's fair. I do have a preference for flatter microphones.
@@Podcastage You thankfully explain the reasons for liking certain mics. It's why I keep coming back to your channel.
True but the beta58a sounds a bit more crisp on the "Ss" although still a nice mic. I prefer the discontinued ev767a
SM58 doesn't still relevant.
Great review! What is your go to mic for a live gig?
I read that this microphone is "humbucking" which is why I was initially interested because of my noisy environment (lights, monitor, crappy power? idk...). I conclude this because my SM57 has a distinct buzz. Do you have any recommends of "humbucking" microphones? I can't find many online besides this and the Shure SM63. Or perhaps a different solution? Thanks!
Now I think you need to throw each box twice, you know, just to make up for that blasphemous idea that is no more box throwing ;) Happy New Year man.
that autotune demo was beautiful :)
Another great review, another year. Happy new year 2019!
Thanks so much Seiph. Appreciate that. Happy new year to you as well.
Happy New Year!!!
And happy new year to you Froztbyte! Hope 2019 is awesome for you!
Dope cam quality
Thank you very much.
Happy New Year B!
Right back at you my friend.
I watched your videos my question is I'm going to buy the scarlett 2i2 2gen with the shure sm7b mic......I don't know if is to work
Excelente (excellent). Thanks and happy 2019.
Thank you very much. Happy new year.
For deep low end bass voice the nd76 or akg d5?
Happy new year 😊
Thank you Darkmew. Hope your new year is happy and awesome as well.
Just got this mic and not to be arrogant but I love the sound quality for its price so no matter the cons it’s worth it 😂
Awesome vocal arrangement!! Yours?
interesting how that treble boost is what made me immediately enamored with this as a potential vocal mic. I find myself putting +12dB baxandall hi shelves on my lead vocals to get the unworldly 'pop' sound, and was looking for a dynamic that could contend with my condenser for use outside of my vocal booth.
That's awesome! This is precisely why I include all the samples. So you can hear the sound and make your mind up on the sound quality and if it meets what you're looking for. Glad you found the mic that fits your desired sound.
Happy New Year
And same to you Simon.
Peaked hf response, but it gets the job done without excessive sibilance. I like it. 🎤
I agree, that mic seems like it's tailored for live use. Saw a video where they kicked it and threw it against a wall and it still worked perfectly, so it's certainly tough enough for the job.
Drop test all the microphones.
@@Podcastage lol test their durability by throwing boxes at them.
Happy new year and can u test the kotion 9000 gaming headset
I saw u reviewed 2000
What mic do you reccomend for streaming gaming, I want a warmer sound and xlr would be a plus, i have a budget of around 3-500 usd for a mic a stand and an xlr interface. i have a mech keyboard and i would prefer if the mic is not blocking my view of the screen, but i dont mind if its infront of my face, thanks for the help :)
As a PC gamer as well as a musician, I would suggest that a headset mic is the only way to go for gaming. Honestly, any stand-mounted mic will either get in your way, or else be so far from your voice that you will have to boost it ridiculously--getting you no love from your gaming mates. I've tried plenty of options, there just isn't anything that compares to a quality headset.
happy new year
Same to you. =)
Do you plan on reviewing the heil pr 77? I hear it's simular to the pr40 but better rejection. I've an ev re27 and wonder how the tone compares.
I didn't have any plans to do so, but I will add it to the voting poll at www.bandrewscott.com/podcastage
Very impressive off axis cancellation. Reminds me of the Sennheiser e835
htotube I don't quite like the colouration of the 835. I had an old AKG I liked so much better.
IMO e835 and e845 are one of the worst in their price range.
I don't own the ED76, but I do own the ED86, which is more powerful, clear, and present than the Shure SM58, and the Beta58A as well. I also find the ND86 to be smoother than the old EV N/D 767a (a mic I love) which has a lot of top-end presence. It all comes down to application. Would you use this for spoken word over one of these handheld Shure mic's ? Probably not. But for live singing, especially if you sing with dynamics, when you want the grit and texture of the quiet parts to be successfully communicated to an audience, having a mic with this kind of power and presence is an essential tool Again, I've only used the ND86, but the ND76 just seems like a cardioid version of that mic. Anyway, maybe I digress. Love the channel !!
Happy New Year :)
Happy new year to you too!
@@Podcastage Thank you 😊
Did you ever try an EV 767A? I considered this mic over the Sennheiser e835, but ended up going with the Senny. Lastly what were you settings for the auto-tune of aud angsty Eine? I would love to see the Project file. Thanks for a great review as always and I hope you have a great year too.
Guy Serle I did 8 backing vocal tracks for that and I used Melodyne set to 45% pitch center and 50% pitch drift.
Oh. And I did not ever use the 767a.
Can I use this mic for street interview?
i knw this is super random, but i need opinions. is the Focusrite CM25 MkII(from the bundle pack) better than the samson q2u?
Very different mics. Condenser vs Dynamic. Depends on use case.
@@Podcastage how about just the overall sound quality
You like this mic better than an SM58? Or SM57? Or the Shures better?
I personally prefer the Shure mics.
Bandrew great vid, could you please review the fifine k670 please, thank you :)
I starting flipping out in sadness when you said that you were no longer throwing the boxes because I love watching you dodge them when you aim incorrectly.
Well I hope you left feeling happy. =)
Which is better this or the SM58? Happy New Year Bandrew.
I personally prefer the SM58. But that's base don my taste.
In this video, it'll always be New Years.
So long evergreen video. HAHA!
@@Podcastage Ha! Yeah...

Should all bad microphones be forgot
For now and for all time" 🎵🎶
And bad headphones...my pet peeve lol
Sounds great. The sibilance is just right, sounded not at all over hyped to my ears on your voice.
The EV ND46 has a swivel head, and is flatter. It makes for a very good instrument mic, and for vocals with some eq.
Interesting! I'll have to look into that one. Thanks for the information.

Does the ND in an Electrovoice mic stand for neodinium?
Yes
As Pentti mentioned, yes it does.
@@Pentti_Hilkuri very nice, also Finland pogchamp
Loved the Bandrew Barbershop Quartet, LOL.
Haha. Thanks Mike.
@@Podcastage Happy New Year Bandrew!
Bandrew from my to you, also happy new year😉😁😘
Best wishes in 2019.
boss, how does this compare, in sound to ev nd 767a
I do not have the ND767a so I'm not able to provide any feedback or insight into that. Sorry I can't be of help.
Would you say an MXL 770 Mic is better or equal to an AT2020 Mic?
No, the at2020 has a better sound quality, also some of the mxl mic's has some hiss to it. However buy what you can, not what you want.
Yeah i feel ya. I want the AT2020 but not the money for it. Thanks for the info👍
Mic Review... 👏... 👏
Happy New Year, I am a singer , I have an AT2020 and an Sm58 and also an NT1-A , What Microphone do you recommend that sounds way better than these but under 500 dollar? Thanks
I prefer the NT1 in that price range in comparison to the NT1a. The blue baby bottle is also rather nice sounding. As you can tell, I have a predilection towards flatter microphones. But it does really come down to personal preference and the sound you're trying to achieve in the music. You have mics that will serve you well, and the quality of the music and performance will impact the final product a lot more.
@@Podcastage And which dynamic might sound better than an sm58 in your opinion? still below 500
@@allan3915 Bandrew will most likely ask what it is about a mic that makes it sound "better" than an SM58 to you.
Options for you include: Sennheiser E series, AKG D5, Shure Beta series, Blue Encore series, the list goes on and on; each one has a 'sound' that is unique, but not 'better' or 'worse' than another.
What I'd recommend doing is going to a Sam Ash (I prefer them) or Guitar Center and go test microphones. I've been using an SM7B for a while and what ended up happening is after I went and tested mics, the best sound for me was the EV RE320 with the bass drum kick filter activated. Apparently, that's my voice.
The reason I say to test is just because what sounds good for most or is popular may not be the best for you. For something as important as a Microphone, I recommend going to test because you never know.
@@allan3915 didn't copy you on the reply, doing that now.
Maybe having this microphone with my XENYX Q802 USB and lowering highs on input, will it sound better? 😀
I think it would sound better if you cut the highs a bit yes.
I cut highs (10k+) by 3dB...always sounds better. Contrarily, I boost the highs on the SM58 by 1-2 dB.
Test superlux e205u
Ahhh... nothing like new strings!
Ayyyyy we get to see the legendary box throw! xD
Forever!
Just too hot and high on the top end. Loved the "acapella."
I've used all the hand-held vocal microphones, but the EV was the best, and the 25-year-old N/D857 still in use is a specification.
Why don't people know EV microphones?
I"m not sure why people don't know EV mics that much. They make some great stuff, I think their RE20 just overshadows everything else they do, and then I believe their PA systems are a bigger part of what they do.
0:40 oh, I was worrying that the best part is gone.
No. I will never abandon it.
Tinny af.
Definitely not the most pleasing.
this may be the video that forces "advanced microphone reviews" to return lol
rich ra The mic he had for a while was the EV ND767A if memory serves.
AMR and PodcastMic should return and do a collab video together
@Andrew M. Sheppard +1
that really would be awesome!
I was about to unsubscribe the moment you said you won’t do throwing anymore! But thank god you were just kidding 😂
Glad you didn't unsubscribe.
Please bring pizza pronto
I love this mic I completely disagree with this video it’s my favorite mic using live regardless of the price it’s much better than more expensive mics
Thanks for sharing your experience. That's why I include all the samples and do not just describe it and say "trust me". I want people to hear the sound that is being recorded and be able to make up their own mind on what they think and then agree or disagree with me.

Kinda sounded like Weird Al with those harmonies.
I take that as a HUGE compliment since weird all is an absolute freaking legend.
@@Podcastage Indeed
Ah yes the new year. However due to the fact that last night at a party my police Cousin stabbed someone in their neck, and is now in prison. Sign lost my train if thought happy New year. Actually I'm happy that oda, the creator of one piece birthday is today.
autotune...was that you resolution too? LOL
Autotune ALL things!
And you don't get a STICKER!!
REEEEEEEEEE! STICKERS FOR EVERYONE!
Fools keep tryin' to step to the SM58, but fools just don't know.
There are plenty of good competitors out there. Neodymium magnets just seem to cause a much much brighter tone, which I don’t think is flattering. You get a hotter output though.
@@Podcastage It's a hard sell to convince me to give up my 58. It just does so many things so well and has for such a long time, I have a difficult time finding a worthy alternative at this price.
@@Thrashman138 You need to try the SM86...that old '58 will be gone for good!
@@SGBass Next time I'm looking for a new mic I will definitely check out the 86. Looks good on paper.
