British, Documentary TV shows are at a handful compared to the same media outlet in most other countries, etc - because of the huge funds the UK "gives out" for historical, archaeological, news purposes, research and conservation. They do pride themselves in the history and greatness of their several bits and pieces - although I would love to see more shows from outside the UK, like southern Ireland, etc - as the Historical Journey does not end with the UK.
This might sound biased, since I am from there, but Portugal too has the same or more History to tell than any other Brit, but we don't have the cash, or Diplomatic support for History and Culture as Britain has, also due to their Monarchy, obvs.
What I mean is, you can't imagine how much of this is about Politics.
How much History is lost to everyone but, honestly, mostly the Americans - whom mostly still believe Portugal is either Spain or nowhere else altogether.
A shame, and I can only hope that people realize how many amazing MISTAKES, and GREATNESS where made in ancient times. Undoubtedly, Europe can show us a variety of those past ordeals - so that we can all become better HUMANS and learn to respect the Planet we live in, after we seemed to have "forgotten" or were manipulated to learn ONLY what OTHER PEOPLE taught was needed for our education.
I hope the XXI century is a turn of mutual, global conscience amongst people - leading them to learn through the internet all the things the media and the papers have kept out, either for financial or political purposes. I honestly believe the media and consumerism turned people dumb, in the last 40 years - so much so - that "we" (not me honey) have become somewhat pliable to their wishes, and blind to greed and ego - monstrous, giants mouths that consume everything around us, and give little or nothing, in return.
If only people knew more about the mistakes we made in the past, they wouldn't be so quick to repeat them.

Very interesting. I love the relaxed style of British documentaries as compared to the over-the-top, frantic style of documentaries from the U.S.
There is a problem with volume leveling in the video, however, which I didn't really notice until an ad came on that was cranked up to 11.

What a wonderful find! I'm sure the people of Newport are happy, as well as the rest of Wales! It's truly a national treasure, or a world treasure! This video was published in 2016, but the ship was actually discovered in June 2002. It's now in a warehouse, still being carefully preserved and studied. It turned out to be too big to fit into the new arts center, after all. But it IS saved! More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_Ship

The tourists would come. The revenues would flow. The story would be told proudly, for all to see.

What kind of politicians don’t know a golden opportunity to be seen as a ‘hero’ like this?? And why didn’t the builders step up and become heroes by not insisting on being paid 8000 pounds per day for delays?? Don’t they understand the awesome PR value that would have??

It's obvious that you have never studied, in a college or university, archaeology. Forbidden Archaeology is fun to watch, but it's pretty much balderdash. Anyone who feels the call of real history and archaeology will be amazed and delighted by this find. All of the citizens of Newport, Wales, have been passionate about their ship. That alone makes this real documentary valuable; the ship is astonishing and I'm sure I'm not alone in being grateful that it's been posted. Thanks to the poster!

The sad truth about these wonderful finds is the fact that it takes horrendous amounts of money to deal with them. And wherever they are, there is usually a building crew and city council howling about how much money they are loosing while they wait for an archaeological team, underfunded, to try and get the finds dug up and moved away as quickly as possible.
In this case it seems that the city council has habit of wrecking anything of historical value in order to slap up modern tat as quickly as they can. There doesn't seem , in this film, to be anyone on the council with any kind of college or university education. If you have no one with a higher education that high school on the council, no one will understand the need for preserving the community's heritage. There is no one who understands the need for actually getting some expert help to manage the building of an adequate viewing space for the areas fabulous ship finds. Done correctly, a museum/ research facility that displays all the boats and ships would bring in a lot of tourist dollars, as well as global acclaim for saving terribly important archaeological finds.

I do hope that in talking about the crack in the mast step the man making all those assumptions took note of the fuck off concrete pile driven right through the boat at that point. 11:36. Though these are archaeologists so anything is possible. I have heard them make a case for foreign invasion based upon a single coin find. I am waiting for one of them to find something he or she cannot explain and them casually label it as a "religious object" and forget it. This whole mast step story sounds like a bit of cash gathering myth making to me.

I completely agree that the actions of the local council are disgusting, but I wonder why it seems that the groups wanting to save the ship didn't take the initiative to raise money to save it instead of waiting for "someone to come forward".
I realize that the UK is very different from the US, but I would think that the visitors and especially the residents of Newport would want to contribute and really make it theirs by assisting in its preservation.
Don't wait for do-nothing politicians start raising the money yourself. While big donors are great a handful of change from everybody interested in it would give you a heck of a start

So a theater and "arts center" take precedence over such an extraordinary historical find? Really? A "theater?" A THEATER??? A building that will maybe draw a few local elite at best, when the ship preserved and on display would draw tourists from all over the world. Sounds to me like, as is usual, a few greedy and wealthy individuals in bed with city government officials intent on having their pet project, to hell with what the mass of the population would like to see. Tourism would bring much more income to the local economy that a stupid theater and "arts center" for the few who care for such crap. No one travels internationally to see a stupid theater! Good lord, save the ship and put the stupid theater in an alley somewhere where it belongs! Or how about put the theater in the damned basement???

Hi Ray, having been to this arts centre. It is not for the "Elites", as you put it. It is a "community arts centre". However, if you understand the local dynamic in South Wales, great emphasis is put on arts, theatre and cultural learning at a community level. I agree with the sentiment you put forward though. History should be preserved.

    • @rayelkins7872
      @rayelkins7872 Před 8 lety +2

thanks, truthfully I don't understand or know anything about the way things work there in South Wales. Here, an arts center and theater are something that takes up more space than it is worth and depends on tax dollars to keep the doors open. Such things are usually the pet project of a politician or a wealthy business person who has some land they want to make a profit on and funnel tax dollars into their pockets. We have a tax to pay for city parks, sports complexes, and other "community" facilities used by a minority levied on the entire populace instead of the users of the city park being responsible for the cost and upkeep.
In some instances though, such as in Kansas City, KS with the "Steamboat Arabia" exhibit, city governments are finally learning that tourism is much higher when there is something to see that is of greater interest to the masses.
My point really was that the ship should take precedence over any new construction that can be built anywhere. The ship is already there. The new building can be built somewhere else. The ship has more potential, or at least in my humble opinion, of bringing in far higher numbers of tourists than a theater or arts center that interests mainly the local population at best. I say because I don't personally know anyone who buys airline tickets and plans a vacation to see a theater or community anything in another state or country, but they (myself included) will do the same to see historical displays of such importance as this ship. Too many (entirely too many) historic buildings and sites have been destroyed already to be replaced with office buildings, condos, or in some cases simply parking lots when every single one of these new structures could be (and should be) built somewhere else and leave our dwindling history intact or future generations. I know in the UK and all over Europe, historic buildings are destroyed regularly to make way for new construction. I understand (at least from the video) that the ship is no longer in danger of destruction, but I understand there is still a question of where to display it.
I apologize for maybe appearing to dog the local populace as I truly did not mean to offend the pride of local people. It is the suits and ties with tunnel vision and a reckless agenda that I wish would open their eyes and see past their own potential profits. I feel they should consider what interests the larger group, whether it be a site or structure that interests the country or possibly the entire world. :-)
Hey at least I didn't rag on the uploader of the video over the title. :-D lol, have a great day Adam, and thank you for explaining and helping me understand a little more about the situation.

Interesting subject but as far as the video, wrong wrong wrong aspect ratio. Do you even understand what that means? It means that the original video was produced at 4:3 and you stretched it out to 16:9. I don't know, maybe you like wide flat heads. Basic amatuer mistake and In my opinion makes this unwatchable. Many better examples of videos of this type out there.

  • @PercyPruneMHDOIFandBars

I find situations like this depressing. There are many artefacts like this wonderful ship squirrelled away in storage most of them unknown to the public. This, to me, is criminal. Humanity has a long, fascinating, sometimes glorious, sometimes not so glorious history that everyone should be able to share. Only by learning from the past, can we avoid repeating mistakes made. I just wish the powers that be would instill a greater grasp of the subject in our indoctrination centres..... sorry, schools.

Spain and Portugal were leading marine powers and merchants long before the English and French caught up with exploration.

Everybody wants to know the secret to the universe and many believe there is no official answer. Fortunately, one group of people have figured it all out mathematically. This is the film that exposes the universal secret that interconnects all of math, all of science, and all technologies around a simple 9-digit equation that is inherit in nature. Everything you ever learned in school will be challenge as the evidence to the claims above are sitting within this film!

Billions of pounds have been spent on raping Egypt and other ancient sights of their treasures only for a lot of the artifacts to end up in some 'Fat Cat's' collection. It is incredible that at home people are not prepared to come up with the resources and cash for a project which is so important. It is great that this ship will be on public display.
I have researched a lot of history and have found the best way to do this is to research a family. When you do this you discover that ordinary people make history. If you destroy ancient artifacts like this boat you are destroying your Own Family Heritage and History. You have a right to take a project to preserve such a find personally. It is easy to be blase about such a find. But such finds actually help you discover your own personal identity. Believe me this is absolutely true.
Even though the video sound and presentation were not the best quality the fight to keep such a PERSONAL TREASURE is ALL TOO IMPORTANT.
When studying my own family history I have uncovered my families and my own identity and even though we are peasantry, all these artifacts are linked to us. We in the 'Grand Scale' of things were as important as the royalty and nobles.
On researching another family group I have discovered an incredibly exciting past. They are descended from ancient Rome (even before Romulus and Remus. Frankish nobility, Anglo-Saxons and Brigantes. This covers almost the entire ancient world. They, being ordinary people are amazed.
While the saying "Each to their own is true.", no one can predict that their progeny will not love History and its treasures the way I do. It is vital to protect it for them.
