- Welcome to MUSIC CIRCLE
Jonathan David Samuel Jones (October 7, 1911 - September 3, 1985) was an American jazz drummer. A band leader and pioneer in jazz percussion, Jones anchored the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section from 1934 to 1948. He was sometimes known as Papa Jo Jones to distinguish him from younger drummer Philly Joe Jones.
He is generally held to be the most important drummer of his time, mainly because he caused the transition, or at the very least was instrumental in it, when the art of drumming moved from ‘Ragtime’ music to what we now know as jazz - and drumming changed. He became known as ‘Papa’ Jo Jones to avoid confusion with ‘Philly’ Joe Jones who was a dozen years younger but eventually working at the same time.
Ragtime was a genre of drumming which appeared at the turn of the 20th century, and it was closely associated with a style of entertainment called ‘Vaudeville’. Vaudeville music was often played by one guy with drumsticks on a bass drum and a snare drum and this was called ‘double drumming’. There was of course a place for one guy playing the bass drum and another playing the snare but, the advent of the bass pedal in 1909 and the influence of the great depression would put paid to all of that. Just one guy now took care of all the associated percussion sounds (tuned or otherwise) in the band which in those days was frequently more grandly called an Orchestra .
Jo Jones wasn’t just a drummer, he could turn his hand to piano, trumpet and saxophone. By the time he joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1934, the centre of jazz had moved from New Orleans to Chicago, and mainly due to the influence of Jo Jones, the whole style of playing the music had changed. He shifted the drummer’s role from that of a strict-tempo timekeeper to that of an interactive member of an improvising group.

I love his facial expressions: it's like he's asking "can you guess what I'm gonna do next?".
@J wow,someone from today 😅
@J they're actually both legends that i'd like to keep listenning to until i die
If you said “play the best shit ever, you’re right!”
I can sit on the ground sitting cross legged with my palms in my chin and hear Jo Jones all day.
For those who love this clip, don’t forget to appreciate his ride cymbal beat when he’s not soloing. No other drummer I’ve heard in the history of jazz drumming sounds like it. He has a very light touch with a slight lilt to his swing feel. It’s gorgeous. His time keeping is just as unique as his soloing.
Dave Tough?
i can't believe what am watching, a man composed of 70% rhythm and 100% joy
Nice!
The master at the top of his game. Truly one of the greatest!
Yes kids, this is the kind of drumming old people used to listen to long time ago...
Just listening to this would be fun.But watching and listening to Papa Jo is joy beyond words....
This guy is the happiest drummer hands down.a joy to watch.
Buddy Rich’s playing is like Star Wars.
Jo Jone’s, is Citizen Kane.
Jo Jones playing is so articulate and artistic, smooth soft spoken, yet staunch and powerful, he can cut through any big band or quartet with ease!
My God what a creative genius he was. The whipped cream roll was so smooth. The dynamics like a roller coaster ride and the innovative rhythmic playing was just superb. Papa Jo was beautiful man.
brillliant, inventive .. a giant.. one of just a handful .. best buzz roll in captivity .. can't go without remarking that his is the best performer's face ever. looks like you caught him in the cookie jar and he knows that neither of you care
You have a perfect way with words, sir! You nailed the perfect description of Jo Jone’s face when he plays. Thank you for that.
I think his facial expressions look like he's in the middle of performing a magic trick.
@@ianboard544 Agreed; he was a magician, after all….
When Big Sid Cattlet tossed him the drumsticks in Jamming the Blues in '45 Jo Jones was anointed heir to the crown . Big Sid don't make mistakes.
Big Sid Cattlet, he was a big deal, he hid his incredible technical skills as a real musician, even Joe Jones was aware of that, Bernard Rich also knew who he was dealing with, and he had a very serious respect for sid- that's a fact. In fact, perhaps the best drums solo in jazz was that of 1947 in Boston.
This man slays and shreds, mad respect.
My drum teacher introduced me to many great drummers including Papa Joe. I went to him wanting to add some variety to my self taught style and after telling me everything I was doing was wrong we blasted through rock and blues in a few months and then it was onto the all time greats. I am a punk who can swing 😁.
Not just drums...but total music. Beautiful..all those sounds from the standard-ish drum set.
Jo Jones mixed flash, sizzle, and showmanship with legitimate, crisp playing. Don't you love that extra floor tom on his right side? He really kicked the early Basie band. He was a very fine drummer... an extraordinary artist.
WOW, he invented quiet tap sounds and patterns on the drums that NOBODY never even heard of. I'll definitely be checking out more of his albums.
Pure joy! Causes me to think back to going to college for music performance - worrying, stressing.. while playing. I should've been more like Papa Jo!
one happy drummer!
he's completely having a conversation with his drums. yes, i have been out of the genre for many years but im just now seeing this amazing player i have never heard of . Thanks to Music Circle, somehow this crept into my YT feed and im loving this.
Very musical and swinging....the father of modern jazz drumming!
I thought I was up on this.Great Jazz drummers that is. Everyone who wanted to be drummer wanted his hands back then.
Extremely good-looking, charming, cunning. Absolutely an archetype!!!
The most creative and elegant drummer I've seen in my life... A MASTER !!!!
Exquisite is the only word that comes to mind listening to this solo.
What a master. He's just having fun. Creative. Inventive. Musical. It's all there. Thanks for posting poster.
LEVEZA, DESTREZA, FLEXIBILIDADE, VELOCIDADE E TÉCNICA. INCRÍVEL! BRINCA TRABALHANDO.
This man is so refined in his playing even the mimics on his face go along with his drumming!
Holy shit!!! Just got into jazz drummers recently. This is like a whole new world for me!!! Love it!!!
Super creative, and those snare roles are smooth as butter. 🧈
Man!!! I am addicted in the Jo Jones music!!!
You can tell by the way he smiles when he plays the drums are his first and greatest love, and MAN does he make love to those drums! Simply amazing!!
Joy for eyes. JOY FOR EARS....
what a pleasure to see and hear this man playing thousands of dynamic nuances. how quiet can you play a drum? the hands drumming, the sidetouch of the snare, the incredible smooth rolls.. he was a real master - effortless, joyful playing, making music - not just a drumming. superb
A true master of the drums! I feel lucky to have been exposed to Jo Jones by my teacher many years ago, and also Max Roach. Even though today I play heavy metal, I still draw upon what I learned from those masters during my formative years, and I will never forget the legacy of the true artists of the drums!!
I just read an article in Drumhead Legends that featured him. It was a awesome article touching on his life from beginning to end.The article led me here, awesome playing!!!
This is the Man!!!!
Effortless mastery. ( a lifetime's practice).
Wow! What an incredible performance! This guys technique and use of dynamic range is superb. That's quite the interesting kit set-up as well. I love going back and watching the legends of those days craft what was to become the modern standard of playing percussion. I'm so very grateful for the dedication these people put into their art. Thank you for your passion and unforgettable performances.
I can watch this man play all day. Awesome! !
Pure finesse and virtuosity! 👏
His solos are very musical.
Let's talk about who was ahead of time !!!!!!!! This legend!!!!!!!
What a Touch!! He felt every beat.
Best rim shots, Ever, amen.
Humour et technique, formidable !!
Practice your rudiments kids.
So important 😊 absolutley
a truly gifted story teller
This is what I want to look like someday playing the drums, like this is the easiest thing in the world and I look so calm, happy, and above all... Sophisticated. Oh yeah, maybe I won't sound like crap anymore.
He looks like a bubble head
One of the greatest ever.
I've never seen someone so pleased with themselves
It's the best drum solo and most creative and power of all time!
I love this channel

Brilliant.
Incomparable technique and personality...
As good as it gets.

Great!!! SUPERBE!!! c'est du Bach à la batterie!!!
Esse era FERA, Count,Pres,Billie....
Dang Jo....you didn't have to do us like that.....damn.
Jo's incredible drumming came from his smarts
In the category of Joe Jones we must always add the big sid callet.
Creativity.
If this guy was white, you would have heard about him already. It's so great I found one of his drum solos in another fine video.
I feel like John Bonham was really inspired by the way this man builds his drum solos, reminds me a lot of some of his moby dick performances. More like a drum song, rather than "watch how fast I can go!"
The Only One..!!!.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is my kind of asmr
If there is god ,then he is god of drumming!
cited by Buddy Rich as one of hs major influences
Amazing!! He's a human clock.
Yup. Thanks for watching, don't forget to share 😊
First min is OG ASMR high quality 😉
Seeing that ride cymbal. I do not wanna be hit on head by that.
This is the only guy I'm gonna watch play a drum solo.
🎶😀🌱
G E N I U S
Giant Stix. I've never listened to his solos. Looks so effortless. Thanks for posting. Is it me, or could Jo Jones and Bill Basie pass for brothers?🎶🎶
tasty.he play music with drums.pich, melody, groove, many things.pa pa jo is pa pa jo.it'sperfect.
I think Jo was one of John Bonham’s influences. I can hear more than one element in this that Bonzo used.
This is a man making love to his set.... and also any women in the audience, I'm sure.
No better way to say it
Gross
biggest smile of any drummer in history . who was his dentist ?
Drum school!
No doubt about how beautiful his smile is just thinking how this man possibly could throw cymbal at charlie parker😂
Jo Jones had a special personality besides his drumming skill. For some reason... I can picture him being loved by children in the home and family because of his innocent playfulness and inventiveness... Just a feeling I get about the man.
Haha that’s how I felt about Bill Cosby growing up😅,
But nah. I jest
@@matthewmartin9120 Bill Cosby was into adult women, not a boy like you.
John Blackwell Jr. DVD.
Say I'm lying?????
Nvm, this one has time stamps at the top and isn't as clear.
And I'm glad this is being seen either way. Lol
But he had this in his own vault. RIP JBJr
Whiplash brought me here.
And I know Fletcher lied, Jo Jones threw the cymball on the ground, not on Charlie Parker.
