Actually tried the Goldwing and found it to be just as uncomfortable as the BMW R18TC, for exactly the same reason. The jugs hanging out of the side and lack of legroom. Also the Goldwing is a bit cramped for a fellow over 6’3” tall. So I bought an Indian Challenger Dark Horse with a Tour Pack, still have my Beemer R1250R, need to have options y’know.

    Hi Andy,
As a 2021 DCT Goldwing Tour owner for the last couple of years I personally found this video quite entertaining, especially the backroad clip at the end, this really highlights the abilities of the bike and shows just how much fun they can be to ride.
Yes the bike is heavy but the pros far outweigh the cons, without doubt this is the best bike I’ve ever owned!

I've ridden the first model and the old and new models of Goldwing and found they are absolutely great machines especially the new models. Goldwings aren't for everyone figuring in the cost and garage space. However, I've not met anyone in the 47 years that the Goldwing has been around who owned one or has ridden one for more than a few minutes that did not have a high opinion of them.

Had a 1984, 1988, 1995, GoldWing. Ridden a 2006 GW at a Honda demo day. Switched to sport touring with a 2005 ST1300 (new) and rode it 50K miles in five seasons. Switched to Yamaha FJR1300. Have owned 3 of those now. Currently on a 2020.
Just tried a new Gen 6 GW this week thinking maybe I’d go back to a GW. They look so good. I’ll give it has a silky smooth engine and good torque in “sport” mode, Cadillac smooth ride. But sorry, still to big (I don’t have a passenger) and not sporty enough for me. Closed down that idea of going back to a GW in my mid 50’s. I’ll stick with sport touring. I can cross the continent no problem on it and do 800 mile days no problem. No GW for me.

You never heard the phrase......."I'd rather push my harley than ride a honda?" Many still can't get past what the Japanese did 80 years ago or so. Another lifetime and a few generations ago. The same for German cars. I know some who hate VW because of the germans. Years ago I worked at a shop and the boss soon hated me when he found out I drove a 75 VW bug. He was a prisoner of war for a short time and turned against me quickly. I quit a few days later.

You are a great ambassador for motorcycling and the content your produce is top notch. While I agree about some bike seeming to have a stigma, I think that is mostly from people who don't have a lot of real world experience in the world of bikes. In the USA there is a common perception among non-riders that Harley owners in general hate anything that isn't H-D. Almost everyone I know, including myself, who owns a Harley also owns/ has owned other brands. At the Harley events I've attended talk was about bikes. Nobody was standing around bashing other brands. Small sample size but IMO riders are a pretty nuanced group and most of us are just grateful for the moments when we get to be on the road. Ride safe and enjoy your Goldwing. It is a cool machine.

They can get out of shape when pushed hard. One of the places Honda went cheap was the suspension.
With no preload up front and only 1980's single point damping front / back and preload out back, it's a hack. The thing that saves it is the multilink and it's geometry up front. And the geometry of the Pro Arm out back. If Honda had screwed up the geometry, current Wing would be no more than a over priced honey wagon.

Hi Andy, I bought a 2023 DCT base version in January after watching endless videos and was entranced by the new shape, now I have to state that I am an absolute fan of the old style VFRs having owned 3 during the 90's and racking up countless miles, the new GW reminds me of that old shape and definitely has some of that sport-tourer DNA, but here's the rub, I found because it handles extremely well it was coaxing me into riding a bit too sporty for it's mass namely coming into roundabouts and long curves, I kept catching my boot on the floor and sometimes wasn't actually sure I was going to get the thing hauled up in time, don't get me wrong I still love the look but I could see the potential for big bills later on, the other thing I found is I couldn't actually do any maintenance on it myself, shaft drive and fixed panniers were barriers I couldn't circumvent, I liked the weekly check of tyres and chain, but removing the back wheel seemed to me mission impossible when it came to tyre change, lastly because of the riding position with feet slightly forward my backside started to ache after a few hours as I wasn't supporting my weight with my thighs, I am a divorcee now so pillions were out, so in my opinion it's a great bike....for some, I've swopped mine and I'm waiting for an NT1100 DCT, cheers.

In fact, it was still in the crate when I went to look at it.They discounted it so much I couldn’t say ‘no’. Best bike ever. Worth the wait. I also own a 1200RT. (I added the top box) My FIRST BMW. Many Wingers consider yours to be the best gen Goldwing ever built. In many ways your 5th gen is a better over all bike. While it is larger and heavy as hell and in many ways was out of date style wise when it came out. And it does have old tech suspension. The forks can be kitted out and a much better rear shock and spring combo can be fitted. You can truly make the suspension great! And it does have the better engine. The two valve engine is much quieter and very tunable. It is pre eurotrash4/5 and can be tuned very high and never over stress it. It has steel sleeves in the cylinders, cams are shim and bucket, better rod and main bearing setup, better piston rings and no DCT. Just a simple tune with no exhaust or intake mods is good for 20 to 25 hp. And it goes up from there with cams and finally exhaust and intake mods. With exhaust and intake modes being the least bang for your buck. Your not missing anything by having a 5th gen at all.

I've been biking for many, many years but haven't ridden - let alone owed as many bikes as you, so If you say it's a great bike you'll get no argument from me. I don't understand why different groups sometimes distance themselves from others - We're all bikers (and road users) after all. I started on mopeds at 16 and one day the bike broke down on a rather quiet road and I was failing miserably to sort it when a group of large and hairy bikers on big and noisy bikes pulled up in their scruffy leathers and cut off denim jackets. They surrounded the bike and started "attacking" it pulling bits off and generally causing mayhem, but then they roared off and sitting in the lay-by was my little bike ticking over better than ever and ready to ride home. Since then I try not to judge on appearances :>)
