Which iPad Should You Buy (2022) | Basic, Mini, Air, Pro or Pro 12.9

- Äas pĆidĂĄn 7. 08. 2024
- In this video, I'll be going over all the iPad models out there in 2022 and which would be the best to buy right now as a consumer, creator or professional.
My upfront conclusion is that if you're a consumer/student then the basic iPad is your best friend. If you're a light creator then you should probably go with the iPad Air (2022, M1) and if you're a creator / professional of some kind, then the iPad Pro (11" & 12.9") is for you.

i really love the fact that you summarized the review in the beginning of the video for people who dont really want an in depth review, many youtubers should start doing this. great job!
This is the best well explained video ever! The way you explain is particularly appealing
I like your point on point of diminishing returns. So true. Again, you put the cart before the horse and you still make it worthwhile watching the whole video mate. Cheers. Well done.
I definitely agree with the diminishing returns concept as you go up in price. But I would add a caveat, you are likely to keep this device for 4 or 5 years. All of the iPads will feel noticeably slower and clunkier after that amount of time but that decrease is always more heavily felt by devices on the lower end compared to the higher end. So sometimes it is worth it to spend a bit more to get a better device, knowing that this will extend itâs usability deep into the end of its life cycle.
I bought the 2018 iPad Pro 11" when it came out. it still feels as smooth as in 2018. I agree with you.
Totally agree. My 2016 iPad Pro still runs very smoothly. It is a 256GB version and was considered overkill when you look back in 2016, but good thing is it lasts really long
Have a 2020 ipad pro which I only use to red manga. Can confirm it's definitely coping well. Did waste my money on all editing apps tho as a graphic designer.
I agree. I bought my Mini 5 256gb Dec 2020 to use as a gaming/movie/media hub. All my 35 AAA games from Ps1-PS4 and my 4 movies have only used up 152GB so youâre right about the higher tier
Eventually in 5 years, Iâll use the the remaining 80GB if more games come out or for movies..I hope
Hey, I wanted to buy an ipad for digital art, editing videos, content creation, studying, notetaking and consuming few multimedia. If I buy an IPAD AIR 5 this year, how long will it last ? I mean how many years could I use it? :)
I bought the M1 Pro 12.9 about 2 months ago after much deliberation. Previously had the basic iPad and while it did everything I wanted I liked the look of the new pro with 256 gb. I really wanted the largest iPad for CZcams and watching Netflix, Prime etc⊠the HDR viewing is fantastic and being able to take this iPad out with me, in the car watching films while I wait for my wife shopping! Or down at our beach hut is just perfect. Yes, it is heavy and for the first week or two I thought Iâd made a big mistake. However, I very soon got used to it and wouldnât go back to the old size. Itâs fantastic for viewing photos and video. Also great for editing Go Pro stuff. I ack that at ÂŁ1080 itâs a hefty price tag, but I believe weâll worth it. Itâs definitely a luxury item and of course Iâm not getting anything like the use out of it that many people would. I am 69 years old and my eyes are not that brilliant so this for me is a really good choice with emails etcâŠ
Excellent ! Thank you for sharing!

THANKS. Finally a content creator that admits that 90% of viewers are no content creators, so even though the creator loves the super premium model that doesn't necessarily translate to the average consumer.
I personally bought the lowest version of the Surface Book in 2017 and it carried me through the entire university cycle for 5 years. I never thought it's too slow in any way even though reviewers like LTT basically say "oh it doesn't even have a dedicated GPU, that's useless". And I'm used to fast performance by having a powerful desktop PC. But tech companies rip you off by the endless upgrade cycle, don't fall for it.
I really love your point of view of things. You give us general learning at the start of the video or conclusions. And then if we want a deeper info we could continue watching. Your opinion is such an important thing when I want to buy something. đ„°â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž

for digital painting and design the larger screen size and performance capabilities of the pro 12.9 are really amazing. beyond these functions though, I canât see a lower tier option being a bad choice. I got mine for the very specific reasons mentioned above.
hello! I'm a med student who is trying to decide which ipad should I go for. I'm thinking about air or pro but 11" model. I need storage so I'm going to buy at least 256 gb. And I'll use them for most likely for writing or drawing. I'm going to use them for about 8 or 10 years so it's important for me. which one should I get in this circumstances?? And the bigger screen really affecting the experience that much?? I'll be carry this ipad everyday so bigger screen can make it tiring in my opinion.

I run an air 3 to take all of my notes for CS and it works pretty well. If you can spend the extra for the larger screen, go for it.
iPad mini is the one for me, because of the size, portability, and fits just right to what I needed. I donât need a iPad Air or iPad Pro, theyâre too big for what Iâm planning to use and what Iâve used my iPad mini so far. Iâm happy and satisfied with my experience with my iPad mini 6. The best!

I recently got an iPad Mini as a writer, editor, and book designer. I wanted to go paperless as doing research, marking up drafts, and writing itself can all be done on devices really well. The savings in ink makes up for the cost within a few projects. I also use it as a sketchpad when I'm practicing shapes or trying to give an idea a rough sketch while I'm out and about. I've found that parts of the work I like to do are limited on the iPad in general so I have a macbook as my workhorse with a large drawing tablet for that serious work. I'm extremely happy with this choice as I'm disabled and the form factor of the mini is more accessible for being out and about in a wheelchair. I will frequently use the mini to take notes when I'm going to an event I'm covering or going to a conference where I'm learning from other writers. It's easier to have the little device that is about the size of a book in the one pouch I have that doesn't get in the way of pushing myself over pulling out a bigger iPad or my macbook from my backpack on the back of the chair. I would love it if the mini had the pro motion display but I am so glad it has the laminated screen. That is one distinction I'd throw in for new artists wanting to use the iPad for art. The air or the mini would be better choices than the budget iPad just because the laminated screen makes a huge difference that is worth the cost. The upgrade to pro motion displays is less valuable to me than the upgrade to get the laminated screen.
One of the best âwhich iPad to buyâ video I have seen.
thank you! this is exactly what i needed - iâve been thinking about getting my first ipad for a bit as a laptop replacement and wanted comparisons that werenât just on appleâs website. my gut was to go with the basic since i am probably 80% consumer and you have confirmed it, so đđŒ
Iâm probably as much a consumer as you are and Iâm sure the base iPad is going to be a great choice! I have an iPad Air 3 with an even older A12 Bionic processor and itâs still running super fast today. This is true even in comparison to an M1 MacBook Air that I use daily.
I had a basic iPad and lost it traveling. It doesnât fit in my purse. I replaced it with a mini that I can tuck safely away in my purse when I am out and about.
By far the most helpful video. Iâve seen a lot ever since the new apple event. This definitely made the decision easier.
So I as a student enjoy my ipad pro 12.9 because of the perfomance and especially size, having the bigger display and 120hz just make everyday use so much more convenient and enjoyable
Been using my old iPad 3 since 2012, it still runs smoothly for extremely basic stuff.
Omg been waiting for a review like this from Aliđ„ł Been looking to upgrade my Gen 7 (paired with a K380 Logitech keyboard) which I mainly use for media consumption, document viewing and occasionally note-taking. It honestly still works really well and has great battery life, but is kinda hard to write on (maybe Iâm just not used to digital note-taking or need a matte screen protector) and the design is starting to feel old. Decided to go with the Air 5 starlight as I really like the sleek design/fresh colours and it better suits my needs. Momentarily thought of getting the 11â Pro for the extra storage and 4 speakers, but it seems like overkill as Iâve only ever used 20GB on my current device. Also went to try the Pros out at a physical store and found the ProMotion screen slightly dizzying for me. With the Air 5 I could get a magic keyboard (my dream keyboardđ„ș) with the money left instead. I also wouldnât have to baby it as much as the Pro still feels quite expensive for me!
(Not me thinking that iPad Mini 6 looks nice after watching this video...)

I wish I watched this video first. Wouldâve save a bunch of time! I loved that you went straight to the point in the first few minutes. I was on the fence between the Air and 11 inch pro mainly because of storage but I donât plan on downloading a ton of apps or games because Iâm a console guy. So the 64gb will most likely do the job. If push comes to shove Iâll just buy a pro after the M2 comes out.

Great review, especially the âdiminishing returnsâ/âconsumer/creatorâ illustration. Iâm looking to update my 2018 12.9â iPad Pro and this made me realise that, for my needs/use, I probably still need an iPad Air at the least or an iPad Pro 11â. I do use the iPad as a âlaptop replacementâ for business trips of up to 2 weeks (as I need EXCEL and WORD mainly). It certainly doesnât âcut itâ as a full-time desktop/laptop replacement, but will do for short periods of time. The Mini wonât work for me as I already have a Kindle and prefer a larger screen for web surfing, watching movies and emailing, etc.
The video also confirmed my decision to downsize to a MacBook 14â when I finally can afford toâŠ. Great job!
As an artist who works with absolutely massive canvas sizes I pretty much had to go with the Pro 12.9. I tried the Air but it severely limited my canvas size so I eventually had to upgrade to the Pro. Added to that the 12.9 vs the 11 just gives me more space to work and split screen when I need to see a reference is just so much better on the 12.9 rather than the 11 or 10.9 in screen.
i wanted to get one but im confused so should I get air 5 or pro coz I've heard the 3d features don't work on iPad airđ«and I wanna use for art
@@bhavnajain3731 If youâre using it for 3D art then youâll definitely need the higher ram of the Pro. Anything creatively intensive like that will push the iPad to its limits so youâll want the model with the highest amount of ram (which is the Pro).
@@Sajirah also any idea about the storage coz the iPad is super expensive so I'm thinking about whether to have 128 or 256GB đ„đ„
@@bhavnajain3731 Iâm with Lunabear, I got the 256 gb. Iâve already used up 90 gb of it and I only bought it back in January so 128 gb just wouldnât have been enough for me. 256 is usually a good sweet spot. Though you can definitely store a lot of your art on cloud services or SSDs to save space you always want to have a little wiggle room with your on board storage.
Keep in mind though, you donât necessarily have to buy the most brand new up to date Pro. I decided to go the refurbished route to save some money and bought the 2020 Pro instead of the 2021 version from Appleâs refurbished store and it looks and works like new (and comes with a year warranty) but was several hundred dollars cheaper than the 2021 Pro. While the M1 chip and 2 extra gb of ram wouldâve been nice, the two models donât actually behave much differently and the 2020 Pro is still leagues better than all the other iPad models on the market.
Hey, I wanted to buy an ipad for digital art, editing videos, content creation, studying, notetaking and consuming few multimedia. If I buy an IPAD AIR 5 this year, how long will it last ? I mean how many years could I use it? :)
Your videos are genuinely inspiring me to keep on posting man.â€ïž
Perfectly explained. Great Job. I normally base my purchasing decisions on the law of diminishing returns. Personally, I think it is the best way to get the most of your puchase. Thanks for the video
Don't forget to check 3rd party markets like craigslist and the others. I got a 2 months old M1 iPad Pro 256gb for 700 usd and it came with protection other extras. Same for almost everything you buy. It also helps the environnement, giving a second life to objects.
I hunted for my M1 12.9 IPad Pro so it was ânew otherâ on Ebay for ÂŁ800.
I got the magic keyboard 2nd hand but in excellent condition for ÂŁ200.
Itâs also not the new-gen one and yet still fits perfectly.
And bought the pencil new but with a student reduction from Apple for about a 107.
So 1107 in total instead of, what, nearly ÂŁ1447 which is RIDICULOUS.
But I have to say I love it and it is actually in many ways more helpful for studying (as Iâm into âliquid textâ in a big way and other âIpad-centricâ programmes).
Itâs also way more interactive via the touchscreen and pencil.
Put it this way, if Apple would magically allow it to operate Mac OS maybe via say an even more premium Pro Max model, MacBook sales would probably collapse.
Which is why they wonât do it of course.

I personally own a MacBook Air that stays at home as a desktop, an iPad Pro 12.9 for research and note taking and an iPad mini 6 to read up on articles and do some work during transit time to work, which takes around 2 hours both ways. Although it seems like an overkill, but having to work full time and study part time, setting up this system works really well for me! I think ultimately it is what you are using the iPad for and whether it suits your lifestyle and help you be more productive.
I am a maths student and I purchased the 12.9 inch cause I needed a big screen. Airâs screen was too small for me. I cannot say that I use the M1 chip, but I am definitely not regretting the decision. It was 1.100 pounds with a pen and I am happy with the decision
Thank you for getting to the conclusion at the beginning. SO helpful!!
Thank you for your review, I been thinking of getting an ipad. This gives me an idea which one will work for me.
I think "for the money" the Air is still the best ipad you can buy. Yes its nearly double the price of the base one, but you do get very significant improvements. USB-C, 10.9 inch laminated screen, Apple Pencil 2 Support with integrated charging doc, much better stereo firing speakers (left and right on landscape mode), better fingerprint sensor, uncomparable better chip and now with the M1chip and center stage front camera it just gaps that bridge to the Pro models even more and imo it completely renders de 11 inch Pro useless. All these upgrades are worth it imo...i had the 2020 Air and couldnt be happier
but you can get ipad air 256gb at the same price as ipad pro 128gb , one downside is you lose 128gb for pro but with pro will get you 120hz promotion , thunderbolt and face id . thats why i purchased ipad pro 11 inch 128 gb

I did not know he said that in teh vid
The fact this video starts off saying and explaining what 99% of "reviewers" refuse to say gets an instant like from me. Most people that have an iPad would be just fine with the entry level variant. You've got dozens of "reviews" of the 12.9-inch Pro that spend 10 minutes talking about walking videos, playing games, and maybe if there's time mention taking a note or something.
If you have the money to waste, go for it, but if you're just consuming content then don't waste your money on a Pro. Get and entry level model and be happy. If you can find a last gen Air for cheap in good shape with the new M1 being released that's a great option too.
As for carrying a notebook or a tablet, if you're strictly Mac/Apple then the biggest reason would be illustration or any other use of the Pencil/a Stylus. Apple strictly plans on keeping touch far away from Macs, so you would have to take out the Macbook and then a drawing tablet to achieve the same functionality as basically an Air or Pro.
i really like the way he gets right into the topic.
Upfront conclusion section got me to like. Just what I was looking for. Thanks :)
I think Mini with Cellular is the best tablet on the market. I had several iPad in the past, and I always thought that it will be the device I will use to write notes, emails, write docs, and consume but find out that in reality I have only consumed staff and only sketched a bit for the fun. I think buying an iPad with all accessories is to lose the fun of using the tablet for quick staff on a bigger screen. Emails, which are 70% of my work, I just read on the device and respond to it from the laptop. All those tablet's keyboards are not comfortable especially when you have to write emails in multi-languages. Thus, I recommend iPad Mini with cellular connectivity which is light, fast to use and consume, and you can even type with your two hands as you do on iPhone.
I prefer the magic keyboard to my M1 MAcâs keyboard although they are quite similar.
The earlier Smart Keyboard was unworkable imo though..
Yup
Youâre absolutely right, if it wasnât for the jelly scrolling, strange scaling and 60hz screen. Make it a 9 inch tablet with 120Hz Amoled display and it would be perfectđ
Absolutely agree.
@@Zuudloarn with that mindset in 2025 we will have 11" ipad mini 8
Good stuff, thanks. The form factor of the Mini is just perfect for me for reading/watching stuff when I'm not at a desk. Like you, the iPad will never replace my actual computer for anything creative so it's almost a consumption device by default, but despite that I do actually find it relatively easy to bash out a quick note or email with the on-screen keyboard on the Mini without putting it down, unlike the larger iPads.

With regards to bezel size, I think having bigger bezels makes a tablet more comfortable to use. The obsession with bezel reduction comes with a penalty to comfort in this category.

I logged in just to subscribe! Great video, this makes my ADHD happy hahah straight to the point! Just for that I will watch the full video!
Upfront conclusions are amazing. Thanks for respecting our time.
I have the 2019 basic iPad 9.7 and itâs been great for games, browsing, organization, and light illustration⊠100% worth the few hundred bucks I spent, but I am excited to one day upgrade to the Pro and better Apple Pencil when Iâm a more serious illustrator. Also MY IPAD IS MY COMPUTER so 90% of people wonât need the pro ESPECIALLY if you have a separate computer. Youâre talking 3x the price so know what youâll actually use and save the money!
I got the IPad Pro 12.9 and itâs amazing. If you can afford it definitely get it. The big screen really makes a difference, as a student it makes multitasking so much better. I didnât get the magic keyboard, it was out of my budget but I did get the Apple Pencil. Bluetooth keyboards work really nicely tho. Thanks for the video it really helped make up my mind.
What gb did you get?
@@adaainthere3382 I got the 256GB model and itâs really great, I think itâs enough storage for note taking and digital art. đ
@@Anniinskii thank u! im getting the same storage too since i want it future proof and i dont want to worry about storage (tho external drives can be utilized for that)
hello guys!
Thanks for your explanation of all the IPads helped me in my decision of which one is best for me.
Your upfront conclusion is really awesome style .... A big thumbs up for youđđŒ
When you already know which iPad you want but want Ali to help you justify getting it đ Excellent review, Ali!
I seriously appreciate your decision upfront!!! Wish more CZcamsrs did that đ€
Cool overview the iPad models!
really liked the idea of upfront conclusion. thanks a lot
You completely missed the Apple refurbished section. You mentioned that students wonât notice the difference between the A and M series processors, so the 2018 iPad Pro in the Apple refurbished section is a much better deal than the current iPad Air and Pro.
But itâs already 4 years old so wouldnât it be better to get a newer device, especially for a student who needs longevity in their ipad?
New iPad Air or iPad Pro 11 2020 (refurbished) for the same price ?
Iâm split between the two
@@romainvandenschrick3426 compare the display panels at an apple store to make your final decision. That's why I went with the Pro you mentioned.
@@tash22010 they basically renew anything that may make it outdated so the battery is back up to 100% health so unless you are a creator like Ali mentioned, there is no point in getting new pros if you can just get the old ones. You can also just get 2020 model if ur very concerned about that problem
@@spooks3802 i meant in terms of software updates
Iâm still deciding if I want to mini đ yes, I feel like I am a creator. I do photo editing and video editing on my MacBook or on my built PC. I was thinking of using the mini as a quick way to sign contracts, watch content, maybe use Lightroom even tho it seems unrealistic đ
Itâs super realistic bro the mini has the highest DPI of all iPads & has P3 color & True Tone so you wonât have any problems getting an accurate and consistent color from your images.
@@CinemaZiggy ahh shit you convinced me now to buy one LMAAAOOOO much appreciated my g
This is hands down the best decision making guide I've seen on CZcams, ever!
Really respect the quick and concise answer before diving in to the specifics
I honestly love the big Pro for the screen. Mainly watching videos on it and using it as a second screen
I think your video about benefits of being in the apple ecosystem is what made me go into apple ⊠đ and as a creator i would say it has been amazing ⊠dont seee myself leaving the ecosystem anytime soon đ
Love the upfront conclusions......I did watch the whole thing though ;)
Till now, the best video on ipads. Thank you
That diminishing returns graph is a super-useful heuristic. I don't know why I've never thought of that before, but it's a terrific visualization. I do think the graph should be steeper between the basic iPad and the iPad Mini, because the Apple Pencil 2, the laminated screen, and USB-C for external storage are really fundamental improvements to creative work of any kind. Nevertheless, applying the concept of diminishing returns is a very useful way of thinking about the decision.
The IPad mini is still great for creators especially visual seeing there are sketchbooks this size and smaller. Iâm a person who makes art almost daily either drawing or digital sculpture and reads almost daily. Iâm also out a lot due to work so the mini has been a great choice for me especially due to its portability allowing me to pull it out anywhere and get to work pretty comfortably and really build consistent habits in multiple areas by having so many tools in one place on a device I have no excuse not to bring with me. The portability, power and the IPadOS apps have allowed me to up my productivity greatly enough that literally everyone around me has noticed. I will pull out my iPad anywhere like I do my phone. I only have productive apps on my iPad as well, I turn off IMessage and no social media so that when Iâm in iPad mode my energy is only going toward creative and productive things. The rest I do on my phone. When Iâm home I prefer my desktop setup unless Iâm feeling lazy and donât wanna get out of bed in this case the size of the mini comes in handy again. Often just journaling in goodnotes alone from bed gives me the boost to start my day on those lazy mornings.
what about the 3d features problem coz many of those 3d options don't work well thenđŁ
This is refreshing. Much appreciated!
Great review, very honest and extremely helpful.. thx.
Great content - straight, upfront without gimmicks. Thank you for valueing our time. subscribing right away!
SERIOUSLY LOVE HOW U JUST GET TO THE POINT AND GIVE THE DETAILS SWIFTLY. Thank you!!!
Owning both an iPad Pro 11" and an iPad Mini 6, I fully understand what you're describing. Gosh, the iPad Mini is such a delight device to hold and use, but that 120Hz display is the only thing keeping me from selling my iPad Pro. I really hope the Mini 7 to have a better screen, that would be an instant buy from me LOL!
I really appreciate your approach to this video. The spectrum and scale is great
Love the format, to the point all the info you need upfront if you want to hear more keep watching
Aliâs Tech Videos are such fun! Iâm here for it đđœ
I managed to snag a used 2018 iPad Pro 11 inch on eBay for ÂŁ300 - fantastic condition, no issues or screen scratches. Only a few light marks on the back. Best deal in a long time!
this has helped me massively with choosing what Ipad i need for uni. Thank youuuu!!!
one of the best videos ive seen about this subject!
iPad Pro 11â 128 gb is the right choice.
