    I know this video is old but I just want to mention that there is another grammar/syntax service that isn't grammarly and that is ProWritingAid. It is much better mainly for the fact that you can change what type of writing you are doing (creative, academic, casual, work, etc)

    As an author, I love Kobo for the community feel alone. Interacting with real human beings whenever you have a question or just want to chat is something unique to them, and something sorely missing from other distribution channels.

    • @AbbieEmmons
      @AbbieEmmons  Před 5 lety +14

      Wow that's so cool! I didn't know Kobo had a community, I'll have to check that out when I publish my book. 😊

    I'll just say it: SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER SCRIVENER !!!!!! For so long I composed in Word and thought I was really getting someplace. However, all my research material was in other folders, or someplace else on the internet or in a document I likely deleted. Now everything is all in one place and I love the functionality of it. I have it for Windows so right now we don't have all the nice doodads the Mac version does. But my hope springs eternal. Thanks for this video. Gives me hope I'll someday be able to actually have one book to show for myself.

    • @AbbieEmmons

      YESSSS SCRIVENER ❤️ it's literally the best. I was also working in Word before, and needless to say Scrivener revolutionized my life as well!! it's awesome. I hope they release the new version for Windows soon! ✨

    I just want to say thank you for this video. I was using Hemingway for editing and I had my doubts about it. I use Grammarly and Google docs as well for editing. Plus, I listen to ambient music as well when I write. Your video made me feel like I'm on the right path, and I'll be checking out more of your material in the near future. Thank you.

  • @chryscreates6151
    @chryscreates6151 Před 5 lety +3

    Love all the features you said for Scrivener plus for each chapter (I don't have the Mac version) a notes area can be added so data can easily be referred to while writing, it is called Synopsis but anything can be typed. I have added the 5 questions that each chapter must have answered as suggested by Chris Fox to have a satisfying chapter for readers to enjoy & it is so much easier to have the notes by the chapter while writing it. Really enjoying your videos & have told the Twitter community they should be watching them also as with each video I realize an element or enhancement for my book. Thank you for the great advice!

    • @AbbieEmmons
      @AbbieEmmons  Před 5 lety +1

      YESS I love the side-by-side view in Scrivener!! Also it's super great for writing the same scene from another character's post of view to check for accuracy. 😊 So glad you've been enjoying my videos, thank you!! 💛✨

  • @SusanCartersBooks
    @SusanCartersBooks Před 5 lety +7

    I love, love, LOVE Scrivener! It has made writing so much easier. It's hard to say which feature I like the best. I use the labels to indicate which part of the novel it is. I have imported a bunch of files to use as templates for character profiles, a cast of characters, world building, etc. I'm glad I'm not the only crazy one

    • @AbbieEmmons

    I use "writer tools". It's free and lets you create characters and places, write the book itself, track your word count and so much more. I mostly use the character creating tool and the word count tool cause I don't plot my novels very thoroughly.

      @@AbbieEmmons Yeah, it is. It's the first story-planning app I didn't deinstall just a few weeks after installing it. The programmer is a university student whom you can email in case of errors occuring or when you have an idea that would improve the app and he'll actually respond and even added a few features that were requested by the users.
      Those who don't want to pay for scrivener should really give it a try. So far, there's only a mobile version, but the PC version is currently tested by betas.

    I am glad there is not a website/app that writes the entire book for you. It takes away the best part.

    Face it. Tech can't replace the classics.

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE Scrivener! My favorite function must be the interaction between the mac software AND the iOS Application. It's so easy to write on the go now. I just take my iPad with me OR simply jot down Ideas and short scenes on the go on my iPhone, using the scrivener App. It's AWESOME!

    I love using Kobo for wordcount!
    Also, Hemingway is good, but I wouldn't dismiss Grammarly either. It's pretty good with catching typos and some other grammatical mistakes that might slip your eye. Sure, it's not 100% accurate, but it's still a huge help. I wouldn't go with just one editing software, I like using them both for the best results. :)

    • @AbbieEmmons

    For those who don't wanna pay for Scrivener but want to use a similar folder system: Manuskript is pretty good, still under development and missing features but I really like it's distraction-free mode. Also, Notion is a note-taking app with a branching folder system AND syncronizes in desktop and android apps!

  • @TeamNolex
    @TeamNolex Před 2 lety +3

    I have actually drawn a character for my novel who happens to look exactly like you. xD
    My fantasy novel takes place in a huge underground kingdom with giant bugs and non-stereotypical fantasy creatures, where three adventurers from a peaceful realm travel into the depths of Immerheim (accompanied by a Moth-Like Wizard) to find the lost princess of Terrademia and free the kingdom of the Krimm of Vartraak, Moth-Durak, who has been corrupted by the spell of the Primecore.
    Back to the point:
    The character‘s name who looks like you is Fenja Foxden and she is 1/4 of a Schmukpuk, a mole like species living in the Forests Of Sporelyo. That causes her to be overgrown with hair in several places, causing her to distance herself from the gaze of others. In her home realm she is a healer who is trying to develop a cure for her „disease“ of being partly a species that others might find despicable. The only person she relies on is her twin brother Alex, who mysteriously disappears, resulting in her going along for the journey, hoping to find her bro on the way. She forms a friendship with her fellowship and learns, that she can be accepted despite her differences in appearance. In the end she finds out, that her brother has been eaten by a Miryakran, a horrific creature that can take the shape of those it digests. She then promises to herself, that in honor of her dead brother, she will not try to change her appearance. She now lives her life with pride and doesn’t feel the need to adapt. She wants to feel as close to her brother as possible and her friends help her through the phases of grief.
    What do you think of this character? I though it might be a good approach to the matter of body shaming without being too „In your face!“.
    Oh and don’t be offended by me comparing you to a person who is 1/4 mole. I was just talking about her face, which looks completely human :D
    Just in case my series ever gets turned into a movie trilogy, I might just contact you to play her. xD
    And for the bad writing of this comment: I’m German.

  • @gdtownshende
    @gdtownshende Před 2 lety

    Absolutely *LOVE* Hemingway. I'm with you on that part.
    I love Scrivener, too, but I do not like to write in it. For me, Scrivener is a one-stop-shop for storing all my research and everything else relevant to my story, but just not my story. I prefer to use my favorite word processor - Mellel - for my writing.

  • @iviebrooks7768

    Whenever I see The Blood Race... I start to internally fangirl hardcore. You can ask anyone who knows me. They can attest to that. xD
    YESS HEMINGWAY!! I love it so much, but I'm trying to decide if the online version is different from the version you can buy and it it's worth buying or not.
    I'm still on the fence about Scrivner, but I think I'm leaning towards getting it.
    Love this video so much! Definitely using KOBO now because I always want to know wordcount of books. XD

    • @AbbieEmmons
      @AbbieEmmons  Před 5 lety +2

      GIRL YOU NEEEED SCRIVENER. (I'm biased but ya know 😂) The only difference between the online version of Hemingway and the desktop version is that with the desktop version you can save projects/documents WITHIN Hemingway to come back to later, if you're writing within the software.

    Hi Abbie, You're a wonderful teacher, and most definitely perfect for my learning style. Too, I'm paralyzed without organization. I've had scrivener for some time, but I'm just now finding the time to write. The one good thing about being a seasoned person. Retirement equals time to reflect. My question to you is what is the title of your beginning Scrivener video? I found others which are wonderful too, however I want to start from beginning. I concur Hemmingway is a must for good prose. I paid my $129 for the year for Grammarly, and the more I use, I am thinking ... hmmm, why so dang much. Was nice to get anothers perspective and read others input. So happy I discovered you.

  • @charitykinsella1971
    @charitykinsella1971 Před 5 lety +8

    I would get Scrivener, but it isn’t free and I don’t have the means to get it. I plan on getting a job soon, but being a high school student with no drivers license or car doesn’t help XD. So that’s not an option for me atm, but maybe one day it will be. ^^ As for Hemmingway, I’ll definitely check it out, but I’m a pretty loyal subject to Grammarly since that was the first tool I got addicted to. (Though, it does make wrong corrections, I have noticed that.) As for the rest, you bet I’ll definitely take a look! Thanks Abbie! ^^ ❤️

    I use Liquid Story Binder for writing and keeping notes, outlines and everything else in one place. It is not updated anymore, but I love it still much more than Scrivener. It gives you freedom in how to organize your writing :) There are also tools I miss in Scrivener, like "dossier" for each character card, with photo gallery... ❤

      Scrivener has Character profiles and you can put a picture in the profile. I do that all the time. I actually keep my book "bible" in Scrivener with my world building, characters and research. I use the split screen to pull up what I need without evern leaving what I'm writing. Don't know how you missed the photo part but it is there in Scrivener. When you put in your charater profile, have the Inspector open and you can add a photo under the notes. I do it all the time.

    Liquid Sory Binder is much better than Scrivener. Everything is organized in your way, you can customize anything you want... after LSB I used Scrivener for a yeary but I returned back to LSB. An author friend of mine suggested editing both in word and google docs because it catches more mistakes. Can you change you doc back and forth from google docs to word? I also use wonder draft as we needed to make a map for our fantasy novel to get directions and timing correct. I Think it was $30 for 1 off instead of paying subscriptions for other software and was easier to use.

    This video is four years old, so I really wasn't going to say anything this time. But after your final request... NovelAI will take the ideas you give it and write out your story for you (to an extent. It's honestly more like directing the prose piecemeal, and you gotta keep a heavy eye on continuity. It also won't do the editing for you. XD I'll admit, it might actually be a sign of my insanity that I'm able to even try integrating the tech in its current form, in the writing of my honest attempt at a quality novel.)

    I use something called Novlr, and I wanted to get Scrivener but for the life of me I couldn't figure out one question: can you purchase Scrivener and use it on multiple computers? As in, can you fire up a web browser from multiple devices and hop back and forth? (ie, my work computer, my home laptop, my tablet before I go to bed, etc). It's not a web browser based program. But as long as you save and close the document, and you have the saving pointing to a cloud area like OneDrive or Dropbox, you can purchase once and download Scrivener on multiple computers and even have it open on multiple at the same time (just not the same document as far as I can tell - I just upgraded to 3 and haven't tried yet but 1 didn't). I just close it when I am done (the program remembers the most recent project you were in and automatically opens that one when you open the program) and I can get on whichever device wherever and write in the same project.
      So, yes... But not exactly in the way you were asking.

    I want Scrivener but it's too expensive :( I guess I'll settle for Google Docs

    I use Google Docs to write my book, but now I wish it had some editing features.
    Plus, if you're going to share it with others for proofreading, and you work on it from Scrivener... how many times would you actually have it on Docs when you edit on Scrivener? That's what I want to know because I don't have Scrivener yet.

    I've purchased Scrivener TWICE, and still can't get used to it. On-screen organization is not my thing. Pen, paper, note cards work better for me. My ADHD doesn't help, so I don't blame Scrivener.

    I would like to use Scivender, but I have a Linux PC. Not sure if I want to pay for the beta. Maybe I just use your average Text Editor. However, I don't know Libreoffice to the point where I can make a good book format.

    I've been debating Scrivener. I use Google Docs for sharing with my cowriters, accessibility on any device, but also because I'm writing a comic book series and the Google Drawings feature helps so much to layout my panels. Does Scrivener have anything like that? It's nearly impossible for me to visualize my pages without Google Drawings

    Hmmm.. I'm having this idea for a novel in my head, I want to turn it into a novel, but I'm not sure if I will be writing more after this experience, therefor I'm not sure if I would want to buy scrivener just yet... So I'm kinda wondering if there are any good alternatives, eg for the prepping stages. I'm currently looking into notion, milanote and trello. So far I'm loving the visual style and ease of use of milanote. BUTTTTT.... the free version only comes with 100 cards basically, which is kinda too few by... a lot xD
    Does you (Abbie) or anyone else have any other (free) recommendations or alternatives?

  • @stevensonnwokenkwo3281

    I like the scrivener's compatibility with ms word and other writing tools to make up for some lacks; however, I have since lost an app that enables phrase count. Do you know where I can find an app? Thanks.

    For anyone watching this now, I like using AI apps for suggestions. I'm the kind of person that needs to talk to someone n think out loud, but I also have social anxiety. Using an AI tool to talk to is a good middle ground for me.
