Basic Sun Shade and Rain Protection for a Jeep JL Wrangler - Rugged Ridge Savanah Brief Top Bikini

- While Cindy and I love to drive all our Jeeps topless, it is nice to have some shade from the sun, especially when the mercury reaches into the triple digits. Of course, being that we see a lot of sudden and unexpected rain showers in the summer, having something to help shelter us from the wet stuff is nice to have as well. Needless to say, that's why we decided to make Pippi's very first mod a Rugged Ridge Savanah Brief Top. Click on the link below to see a short video that shows just how easy it is to install and hear our reasons for choosing it over some of the other bikini, safari and mesh top options that are available today. As an added bonus, you'll even get to see how much of a ride height change we saw from this simple mod. And yes, there is a Ripley clip at the end :)

We love it too :)
Love the videos you are putting out ! Keep them coming …. By far my favourite CZcams channel. Ripley is the icing on the cake.
Thank you, we really do appreciate it.
You are such a great source of information. When I have a Jeep project in mind, like right now with track bar, drag link upgrades, I always look at your videos for how to info.
Awesome! So glad to hear it and thank you :)
Great video as always, really of all the different jeep channels I follow your videos are hands down top shelf! The addition of adding footage of your beautiful puppy makes it soooo much worth watching to the end. She is truly a very special pup and she is blessed to have you guys as her parents! Thanks for sharing. Curt.
Thank you for the kind words, we really do appreciate it and we're so glad to know you enjoy seeing Ripley :)

Definitely on the list for my 2 door as well. Great video!

Awesome! Thank you!
I LOVE THIS GUY! Great explanions , great teacher. fun to watch & learn.
LOL - thank you. Happy to hear you enjoy our videos ☺
Simply the best unboxing possible 😂 love it!
Glad you enjoyed!
Yours (or Cindy’s) video editing skills awesome! Especially when opening packages or when heading out in your Jeeps! Keep on keepin’ on!
It's all Cindy and she's flattered that you would say as much. Thank you.
@@wayalife highly skilled
Great video. Bikini top is awesome addition to any Wrangler. It really makes the jeep ownership allot of fun just cruising around. You get the open air feeling without sun damage to your skin.
And if you get a windjammer you can pretty much go year around almost without using the full softtop (depending how agreeable you are to allowing weather too get though the openings) . It's allot of fun
Thank you and well said! 👍
Windjammer? Sorry, I am brand new to Jeeps
Nice collection of Jeeps. Love your red one you worked on. Thanks for this video. Mine is the California Brief Soft Top, same exact design.
Seriously have loved this channel for years now, and its definitely one of my faves! There is another that would be amazing to see a collab between the two; the story til now, great overland channel And a wayalife video would be awesome to see!
Glad to hear you enjoy our videos :)
Glad to had found your channel, been a newbie Jeep owner it is fun to watch your well done videos, thanks from NJ
Awesome! Glad you found us and enjoy our videos.
Thanks for the outstanding video. I just received my top for my 2021 Willys JLU. Fits perfectly. Now for the test drive.
Glad it helped :)
The bikini top with the half-doors looks perfect and the top it seems very good quality. Awesome and very cute Ripley. Many thanks Cindy and Eddie.
It really is a great look and I am very happy with the top. Happy to hear you enjoyed seeing Ripley :)
Always good videos keep it up!
Thank you :)
Love that Jeep. Reminds me of my 1987 YJ back in the day. Plus super smart dog.
Thank you :)
Another editing/unboxing gem! 🔥I also prefer that style as opposed to the mesh.
Here is South Fl. summer pop up showers are the norm.
LOL - thank you :)
Looks nice and clean and simple! Also very jealous of your shop!!!!
Thank you. Glad you like what you see 😎
Finally found one in stock and ordered. Can’t wait
Awesome!
I have a 2020 JL with the soft top. I love taking the doors off and having the option of doin a safari top or having the top down.
Awesome! Super happy with this one :)
BTW Ripley is amazing. Great dog and pet parents.
Great video, like usual!!
Glad you enjoyed! 😎
That’s a great modification. We own two convertible MINI Coopers, a Roadster (two seater) and a Cabriolet (four seater), however I’d want a hardtop Jeep for security when hauling around my camera equipment. But the option of removing the hardtop at times is a wonderful advantage.
Glad we could share this with you :)
I have one on my TJ and it also does a good job of keeping the sun from burning my head! lol
I like this one. Now if I can just find one in stock somewhere for my JLUR. Really enjoy your videos. Can't wait to see what all you do to the Sport! Hello from GA.
Look for one made by Rampage. They're the same company and are taking over the tops department.
I enjoy your new series on taking a stock, bare bones Jeep and making it into a competent wheeler. That said, I do miss your extreme wheeling stuff!
We'll do more. Just spending a little time on this.
Nice top! I love half-doors with a bikini top! Oh….& Ripley, she is the cutest!
Thank you!! 😎
My son and I were driving around topless (the Jeep lol) in 106 degree heat. After 30 mins, we made a beeline to 4 Wheel Parts to purchase a bikini top. Let’s just say the ride home in our ‘93 YJ was lovely.
LOL - Awesome. We have a 93 YJ too :)
@@wayalife Eddie, I just now ran across the video of how you and Cindy acquired your ‘93 YJ. Great minds is all I can say. We bought ours (4.0 of course) with the stimulus as well 😅
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
Cool Jeeps, cool bikini top and really cool dog. You‘ve got it made! I discovered your channel a couple of days ago and watched as many of your videos as I could squeeze in. I particularly enjoyed the Dynatrack axle build process. Although I’ve planned and commissioned the build of a couple of sports cars and restomods, I‘m new to off-roading and in the process of researching an open, off road vehicle for use on the tiny mediterranen island of Ibiza. Currently on the top of my list is a build based on a seventies Land Cruiser J4 with electric conversion and top quality axles and chassis equipment. Any content from you in this regard would be most welcome.
I have learned to never say, "This should be pretty simple" when working in the garage. Seems like there's always a "Gotcha" waiting for me.
LOL - I hear ya 🤪
I call that the X factor lol
This was helpful! I just bought mine, but the hardware was missing & won't be able to be shipped to me under December 2021. What size bolts are washers are these?
Maybe I can buy something at a Lowes or Home Depot in the meantime. Just wanting to enjoy this top while the weather is still nice. TIA!
@wayalife, absolutely need that 2021 Jeep 4 door action! :-) I saw you said it's coming, let us know when...Nice work!
Rampage is the same company and they make it now. I believe it's called a California Brief Top.
So helpful! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful! 😎
I'm debating a Wrangler or 4runner. You're videos convinced me. Wranglers just seem more fun
Awesome! Glad to hear we could be of help to you with our videos.
I learned something today...thx!
Glad to hear it! 😎
Thanks for the video but, we need more Ripple time. Great job keep it up
LOL - more is coming 😎
Awesome video Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Why does this video make me want to run out and get a 2 door to tool around in? Looks so fun! Time to find a beach or maybe a crystal clear lake. ;)
LOL - it really is a lot of fun. Hope you and Ray are doing well 😎
Not sure how I feel about the roll bars in the rear of the new Jeep’s. They don’t look like tube bars anymore but more like an engineered something or other. Hopefully they have a reason behind the change like strength and not just a cheaper alternative.
Love the two door content. 👍
They're solid or at least, they have to be to keep meeting higher and higher safety standards. Glad you enjoy our videos 😎
Great video as always! Need a bikini for my TJ.
They are super nice to have 😎
Nice video
Thank you :)
Thank you for the rear strap tip, installed today and never would have known that o||||||o ✌
Glad we could be of help with our video :)
beautiful dog!
Thank you 😎
Really happy to hear you enjoy our videos 😎
I’ve been wanting a Jeep 2dr but the build quality has me reluctant to commit! I’ve seen people stuck off-road due to electronic issues and it’s a 40,000 car but damn Jeep’s are nice lol
Not sure who you've seen stuck but I can't say that's ever been something I have seen. Not with any of the Jeeps that I own or on others.
Great video. Are you able to keep it on when you put the hardtop back on? Thanks! I have a 2020 JL.
No. As I mention in the video, I like this top because it comes with a windshield header channel. This allows the top to be secured to the windshield frame. You would not be able to install your hard top freedom top panels with this installed.
Interesting solution I might get something similar for my 4 door. Not a fan of all the sunlight that still goes through my sun shade.
Well trained pup! 🐶
Thank you :)
You should buy a buck 110 folderknife that also can counts as a true american icon to open all boxes. Even I as a swede have two buck knives but unfortunately only one jk wrangler. Keep up all the good videos!👍
LOL - I may have to do just that!
Looks great. Is there a bikini top that will work with a Bestop Sunrider that you have found? A lot of them like this one work with the windshield channel frame and the Sunrider is using that real estate already. I've been looking and asking around without much luck and seeing this made me think about it again, so I thought I'd ask.
Sorry, you're asking for more than can be made. You'd be best to install something like a Spiderweb Shade.
Question for anyone's who has installed this after removing factory soft top. Is there a header portion from the factory soft top assembly I need to remove? The header channel on the RR Savannah doesn't sit nicely the way it does in the vid here. Thank you in advance!
I like this top; have tried many sites trying to understand differences. This looks like an all around good design; do they make for 4 dr.? I've tried searching but am not clear on this point. Thanks for direction. (2021/4dr). Thank you.
I don't know for sure but I hope so as I'd really like to get one for mine.
Great video! I'm looking to get a soft top for my 2 door JL soon. How does this sunshade do in a rain shower?
Well, there's no comparing this top to a hard top or soft top fully on in the rain but it does keep a lot of the water off of you. And really, having run a soft top with the windows out and half doors, the experience is about the same.
Great Vid. So many options for Jeeps. When you comment that you couldn't order a factory soft top it makes me curious. You could still order one from Best Top though right? If you wanted one.
Correct, it was just a supply chain issue with Jeep at the time we ordered this Jeep. I had since found a used one.
When you remove the hard top, do they sell anything to protect the paint surface surrounding the back seat where the bolts were? It seems to me this area would be prone to scratches with the hard top off. Any thoughts? I like your evaluation of this bikini top. I'll look to pick one up.
3M does sell a clear tape that can be applied to the pain to help protect it.
I finally went naked the other day. (Been a wet summer so far. ) on my way home from work the other day and it rained, I gotta say … I didn’t get that wet and it actually felt good. With so many different types of bikini tops ,shade and style options it’s hard to pull the trigger on one. I do like the one you just installed tho and it’s responsibly priced.
So long as you're driving, it's not too bad. It's when you're parked and it starts coming down hard and you have to get in and go that it kinda sucks. For the price, I'm pretty happy with what we got. :)
Now that is a Budget Lift.
🤣 I said the mods would be "mild" 😁
Thanks for sharing. Especially the part about the rear strap. Are you able to run it at highway speeds without it sagging? I ended up returning mine since I couldn’t figure out how to get the back tight enough. It wasn’t worth almost $200 to have something so loud on the highway.
Oh yeah, just like I show in the video, the top stays nice and tight, even at highway speeds. No sagging. It really is a shame that the rear straps step was not included in the instructions.
@@wayalife I agree. It was really frustrating. I may get another one at some point. I also have a Sunrider for hardtop, which has been great when I need to run the hardtop. Love your channel. Looking forward to more content on your new JL.
I know this thread is old, but wanted to follow-up to say that I ended up getting this top again. Just installed it and tightened the straps on the rear of the roll bar correctly and it works great! Did just fine going 65 on the highway.. thanks again for posting this video. BTW, the instructions still do not have this step.
One more thing, have you found a retractable sun screen for the driver / passenger in a 2023 model 2 door wrangler? I see it available for models through 2017 but not a follow up for the 2018 - 2023 generation.
Sorry, I haven't looked.
Do you recommend a brand of silicone spray or gel to protect top and door seals when removing tops and how often to apply to the seals.
Can't say that I use anything on the seals.
Interested in getting the 4door version of this top. Any idea how much it flaps on the roll bar? I have one from mastertop and it's impossible to drive above 35mph without it flapping loudly
Sorry, I have no experience with the 4-door version and it would be a bit different than what you see in this video. That said, I have installed tops like this on my JK's and they didn't have the flapping problem you've described. It could be you may not have installed what you have correctly, as is pointed out in this video.
Been doing a lot of work lately on my 04 Yota Tundra. Those brand new bolts come off a whole lot easily than 17+ y/o bolts,,,hahaha!!!
LOL - so nice to be working on something new :)
Great video and great job demonstrating the effectiveness of the top amd ease of installing it but I have to ask… why have a jeep if you will need tools to go topless? Is there a way to roll it up to the windshield and secure it? I think my factory soft top with side panels removed is far more functional. Am I wrong?
Umm, unlike you, our Jeep did NOT come with a soft top, only a hard top and this is a LOT more affordable than buying a new soft top. We run like this the better part of the year and it works great for our needs and we think it looks better too.
@@wayalife I get what your saying and I am not picking on ya… just trying to figure out better options for my soft top if there are any out there. Can’t take the roof off without tools and no side protection from weather in the chance a storm passes. So this becomes a fair weather jeep. Got it. Unlike you… some of us only have one vehicle and a fair weather jeep won’t work. Thanks for the video, it served its purpose
LOL - as we show in the video and as the title of the video states, basic "sun & rain" protection. As in, we get rained on during the summer and while this top isn't a perfect solution, it does help to keep us dry when it does. And, we drive our Jeep in the wet stuff all the time. For your purposes, you might want to look into a Spiderwebshade as it can be installed and left on with a factory top on.
@@wayalife Right now I just remove the side panels and keep them behind the seats. Gives me basic sun and rain pro as well. Guess I will check out your suggestion and see if it is worth purchasing. Thanks again
Exact same error with the Bestop Safari top for JK probably for JL too.....never understood why a batten pocket is not included in the tops to stabilise the whole thing.
Wow, I had no idea. Seems like a pretty important step too.
Flag , Jeep ,Dog don’t know how you top that . Half door two doors are just cool topless .
Awesome! 😎
Does this work well with the factory doors? Because I don't have the doors you have.
Yes, it works the same and I do it at times.
Does this top keep rain water from dripping down inside the passenger doors? Doesn’t look like there is any seal.
LOL - no. It just helps to keep you a lot less wet. Hence, the "basic" in the title.
Cool dog
Thank you :)
Great video!! Are these able to be installed onto a four door?
You need to get one for a 4-door and it's made by Rampage. Same company, different name.
what doors are those? pretty cool looking.
These are the factory half doors. You can only order them on a new Jeep and as a part of a dual door group. Costs about $4k extra
One can also order a 2.5 inch lift, so that to would still be stock?
It wouldn't be a factory option but yes, something you can order from the factory so I would definitely say stockish for sure. 😁
EDIT: I just remembered that you can now get a Recon package and yes, that does come with 2.5" of lift and 35" tires so yes, that would mean it would still be stock in my opinion.
You have such great videos, I try to see them all… I still would like you to come and do my Jeep. I’ll even walk your dog which I love ❤️.
LOL - So happy to hear you enjoy our videos and Ripley :)
hmmm, i missed something. When did you get the YJ?!
Got it about a year or so ago :)
I just noticed, did Jeep cheap out and stop padding the roll bars with the JL?
I don't know about cheap. I always hated the cheap roll bar padding on my JK and TJ before as they would fade and look like crap after just a couple of summers. The plastic cladding on the inside of the JL roll bars is quite nice.
Loving the 2 door content. What size is that shop?
Thank you. Shop is about 2100 sq ft
What about if my Jeep only came with the soft top and not the hard top? Will this option still work if my soft top isn’t removed?
This top uses the same windshield header attachments and so no, it will not work with a soft top installed.
? What’s your opinion on the latest 6sp clutch recall ? I had the clutch actuator support shaft installed and the newest is a pcm flash to take power out to prevent pressure plate damage ? I think that’s totally absurd.
Honestly, I didn't even know about it. I wonder if our Jeep already had the change made from the factory.
@@wayalife yea few clutch recalls on my 2018 JLU. Mine had a bad 1/2 synchronizer. It would pop it out of second gear. Took the shop a month to tear it down and order parts and then a second parts order for shim set they missed. I wanted a new box but the svc guy assured me the .030” of material floats around the case wouldn’t affect bearing life 😳 so we at 39k now have a 7/100 svc contract 🙏 I won’t need to use it 😉
Well that's a bummer. Ours is a s2021 and I can only hope that they got that fixed 3 years ago.
Puppy just Ames to please great looking dog very smart oh ya top is cool to 😂😂 hope all is good your way as always be safe 👍👍👍
Thank you! You too!
Does your jeep have a LSD? Just curious bc they have incredible deals on base sport but no LSD .. do you feel it is a necessity for mild off roading ?
Nope and I can tell you that there really is no need for it. The traction control system that come on the JL Wrangler is outstanding. It almost feels like you have lockers.
Love my soft top! It doesn’t flap, protects my kids in the back seat, can stow it in under a minute with no tools, looks so much better…
LOL - so cool that you were actually able to order one with your Jeep. We weren't so lucky but that said, we've always hated the soft top folded down look but of course, to each their own. 👍
@@wayalife I totally agree with you... I've had a TJ, a JKU and now a JL... Always hated the flapping corners of the soft tops but no such thing on a JL... There's nothing but the roll cage on the sides so it looks much more like a safari top... I'm jealous of your half doors though!
@@ppshouse LOL - I think that's what I hate most about the JL soft top with the windows out. The top looks like a diving board or something. But of course, that's just me.
@@wayalife yet in the history of Wrangler, it's only the JL soft top that is worth as much as the hard top to hard top owners. May be it's only an Arizona thing but there's many posts on forums where people want to trade a hard top for a soft top... But like you said, it's a question of taste...
LOL - Just so that we're on the same page, this is nothing personal. As I eluded to in my very first response, we TRIED to order this Jeep with just a soft top as that's what we prefer on ALL our Jeeps. That being said, I STILL wouldn't run it with just the windows out being that I can't stand the way it looks. Completely topless or with a bikini like this is how I prefer it and yes, it's just a matter of personal taste. 😎
What's the uninstall/reinstall time and would it be possible to add this over a jtops mesh top? (wanting to keep hard top off during the summer but prefer the mesh and thinking this for days it may rain)
I can't say for sure about whether or not you can use this with a mesh top. Taking it on and off can be done in under 5 min.
@@wayalife Appreciate the response. Love the channel. Thanks!
Would this work for a 2023 willys sport (hard top) ? Sorry if this a stupid question. Amazon is giving mix signs if it will fit my jeep.
Yes, it should work on a 2018-23 but not a 2024-up
@@wayalife thank you 🙏🏾
I don't get taking the tops off to just put another one on?
Not sure what's there to get. With the hard top on, you're completely sealed off from the elements. With it off, you're opened up to it. A top like this simply keeps the sun off of you from above and to a degree, rain as well in a sudden summer storm. The sides are still wide open.
I want to see it with the factory “cage” painted black. 👍🏻
I would look nicer with them being black.
They need to update the header setup for the tj’s when it comes to bikini tops, something like this is way more solid and simple
This really is a solid design.
Cool but I can't see what brand..how do I buy one
Check the link in the video description
What brand and where can I get this for a 2014 2dr JK?
What you see in this video is made by Rugged Ridge but Rampage is the same company and you can get what you're wanting from them too.
How do you like that top? Looking for something like this for my JLU. Is it OK with the doors off??
Love it and yes, I run something similar on my JKU. Totally fine with the doors off.
@@wayalife I was on their website and it says additional door surrounds are needed. I asked a few people and they said no. Btw I have a hardtop.. 🤦🏼♂️
@@seadoo4life127 With this top amzn.to/3Wo64Eg you do not need additional door surrounds
How fast can you drive with it on? And also have you been in the rain with it? Does it do a ok job?
You can drive as fast as you want. I have been in the rain with it and as the title states, it's just "basic" rain protection. It'll keep most of the wet stuff out but you'll still get a little wet.
Do you have an associate link for a jk equivalent top?
For a 4-door, it would be this amzn.to/3wsnnIU and it's made by Rampage. Not sure if it's made for a 2-door.
@@wayalife Forgot to specify 4 door. That’s it. Thank you.
I come here for Jeep videos... I stay for the pooch.
LOL - awesome! :)
You'd think they would include a metal rod to go inside that back section to keep it taut while driving around.
