Benefits of a Basic Jeep JL Wrangler Sport

  • Without question, Cindy and I absolutely love Moby, our 2007 Jeep JK Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited! We love that he's sitting on an EVO Double Throw Down suspension system, has Dynatrac ProRock axles, is running a set of 40" Nitto Trail Grapplers, has a big, loud and powerful Motech 6.2L LT V8 under the hood and is crazy capable out on the rocks or bombing across the desert. In fact, we love all our built up Jeeps including our 2018 JLUR and 2020 Gladiator and if only because they can take on just about anything as well. But, there is something to be said about the benefits of a basic Jeep. And, in this short video, I'll highlight a few of the things that I’ve been thinking about, ever since bringing home Pippi, our brand new 2021, JL Wrangler 2-Door Sport. Oh, and yes, there are clips of our Border Collie Ripley in this video.

I had grand plans to upgrade my Sport when I got it, but decided to wait 3 months to see what I may want. I took it up some steep mountain roads, ones that most SUVs would have major issues doing and did it with no real problems. I also got to enjoy how a stock Wrangler drove on the road. After the three months, I realized that the only thing I needed was better AT tires to meet my needs.

We started the Rubicon trail last month behind a team of Jeep engineers and their two completely stock Gladiators running full tire pressure. They were a lot slower than our group and let us pass, but their goal was to evaluate that part of the trail for the upcoming Jeep Safari.

A "basic" Jeep is way more awesome than most other vehicles. I bought a '21 JLU sahara, and while it's great having almost all the bells and whistles, the expense of the payments really limits my ability to customize it and mod it out. If I could do it over again, I'd but a lower trim for a lower monthly payment, and slowly and cheaply mod it out over time to meet my needs. Enjoy your new car!

You will love your new Gladiator! I don't have one, but I do have a 2012 Unlimited Wrangler Rubicon I've had since two months before taking delivery of it. (Yes, my Ruby was a factory order.) I dearly love my Jeep. This 2012 was my first Jeep. It was nine years since taking delivery of it this past April. The only problem I've had with my Rubicon was the factory navigation system, Jeep's mid-level offering in 2012, failed while Ruby was still under warranty. To this day there are no oil leaks under my Wrangler. You made a great choice. I believe you will grow happier with your new Gladiator the longer you've owned it. For Jeep lovers, THIS is THE best website, in my humble opinion. Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Hawaii.

These thoughts on a stock Jeep make more and more sense to me. I don’t own a Jeep, never have, I just want one to get further off the pavement so as to increase my opportunities for landscape photography. Originally I was thinking a four door, but do I really need all of that space. I’ve been driving MINI Coopers for twelve years so I already know what “packing lite” means…

Why buy an 'expensive' new Jeep! We have a 2015 2 dr sport manual.. people are always whining about how impossible it is to sleep inside. I'm 6-2 and I do. I figured out how to make the passenger seat fold flat to quickly make into a 6-4 bed. Two can sleep inside, the driver's side is shorter but if you're half cool and not an amazon, it's doable. I pack my ct90 on the trailer hitch, it's a great package with storage under. 👍👍

Agree that there's definitely a place and time for built-up Jeeps, but Pippi's videos have a been a refreshing departure from all the attention given to build-ups. Even I was surprised at the Sport's capabilities and have been 100% satisfied with it's on- and off-road performance. Just goes to show that you can have a ton of Jeep fun without having to spend a fortune. Would love to see more videos of where you could take Pippi for an easy day of trails/overlanding in Southern NV, but no matter where she goes, I'll be watching! I’ve done more in a stock truck with mildly aggressive tires than many folks will ever do with their modded out rigs. First priority with my new JLU was a winch and winch bumper. Second was a second set of wheels/tires for snow and mud. Third was armor underneath. I may lift it an inch or so front and 3/4” rear to make up for the extra weight, but that’s it. It will take me anywhere I need to go and spending many tens of thousands to gain a few percent more locations is not for me. No shade on those who want to make their rigs what they want - it’s your money, you do you. But few people actually need it, and only a very few will truly push a rig to its limits.

Drove my new 2024 JL Sport 4 door from Boise to Reno on one tank of gas (Meridian Costco, 91 octane) with 95 miles of range left. Today, made the reverse trip again on one tank (Reno Costco) and arrived in Meridian with 65 mile range left. According to the onboard computer, 27 mpg to Reno and 26 mpg to Meridian. I have yet to do any significant off-roading, other than Boise Ridge Road, which it handled just fine. I think the only mod I will do is a set of AT tires, and will stick to either the stock size (245/70r17) or maybe just a tad larger (255/75r17). My wife drives a 2 door Rubicon and I was initially envious enough to consider a lift. After watching this video, as well as the one of Pippi going off-road, in addition to my experience thus far, I will pass on the lift and any consideration of 33s.

Base models are great. I've got an old used 07 Wrangler Unlimited X. It's RWD only. Might think "Well dang, that's horrible", but not so much. 4WD conversion is cheap, especially given I only paid 5k for the Jeep with no damage. That leaves my budget way open since I was going to change most of that out anyway. For heavy mod plans all you really need is a functional body since the rest is going to go.

Any Wrangler trim can perform light to moderate off-roading in stock form (granted you're okay possibly causing some body damage on more difficult trails). Only reason to make major suspension modifications and buy enormous tires is if you're big into hard core off roading, or are okay with paying the extra money simply for the aesthetic. Most people who buy or lease Jeeps will rarely or never need to make major body modifications to meet their needs.

I am to one of the few people that has kept my 2020 2dr Rubicon hard top v6 manual stock except for a winch, I use it off road I just do the green and blue trails , happy with it as it is . The Rubicon is very capable stock why mess a good thing that is what I say.

I've got a loaded out 4XE. But I'd love to get behind the wheel of an old CJ5, sometime. There's just something about an old shifter vibrating in your hand because it's literally connected to the transmission. And a steering wheel that's connected to a steering rack that's connected to the wheel assembly that just connected with a tree root and you can tell? Even better.

Well done on pointing the pros and cons of stock and upgraded rig! For daily used i like our automatic van specially in traffic jams in my country. Though i drive on manual tranny too in farm roads and heavy loads, less complex when fixing and cost less.. Oh Ripley got new shoes too👏👏👏

I have had my 2015 rubicon hard rock for 6 years now. It’s never let me down. I have been all over souther Nevada and southern Utah. It’s far more capable than I am off road. The only change I made was getting rid of the factory rubber hood latches for the drake off road turnbuckle latches and hood pin.

I think it depends on what you plan on doing with it. But if you're new to jeeping, then I would say buy it bone-stock, and start deciding what you need to upgrade as you use it. There's so much after-market parts available, that you don't have to make immediate decisions on how you're going to modify it. I've always loved jeeps for the simplicity, and the most exposed you can be to the environment and still have a safety cage with crash protection.

My first Jeep was a YJ 2.5 5-speed. It had the nice 5-spoke Jeep alloys and the hardtop and hard doors. I don’t remember the exact price but it was around 14-15k out the door. In today’s money it’s roughly what a new Sport hardtop 6-speed with A/C. For that price today you’re getting twice the Jeep that YJ was in every measure.
