Die Frankokanadier Voivod gehören zu den einflussreichsten Bands in der Metalwelt und haben mit Elementen aus Industrial, Elektro und Progressive experimentiert.
1982 in Jonquière, Québec, gegründet, haben Voivod sich im Laufe ihrer Karriere musikalisch immer wieder verändert, ihren Themen sind sie aber treu geblieben. Aufgrund ihrer von Science Fiction inspirierten Texte und Plattencover werden sie oft dem Cyberpunk zugeordnet.
Thrash Metal und Progressive Metal gehören zu ihren Haupteinflüssen. Während in den Anfangsjahren bei ihnen noch eher die Härte des Thrash dominiert hat, klingen Voivod heute melodischer und insgesamt ausgefuchster. Schlagzeuger Michel Langevin ist anerkannter Künstler und zeichnet für die Artworks nicht nur der eigenen Band, sondern auch Plattencover von u.a. Dave Grohl ("Probot") verantwortlich.

Snake is such an underrated frontman

It amazes me how good they still sound. Chewy's playing sound and feel is amazing. I can't imagine someone doing Piggy more justice in honoring his legacy. Same for Rocky. You are absolutely killing the bass tracks on these songs. As for Snake and Away.... I was a budding guitarist/vocalist back around 87 and I have no idea how you guys are still going. Hearing and seeing this video really made me happy.

It's hard to describe how incredibly good this band is ! With their innovation they could circle the earth 5 times. Chewy is extraterrestrially good !

That crazy drumstyle from away is so damn powerful
his style is based on jazz drumming. in jazz all instruments play both roles: rhytmic and melodic. that way of playing gives lots of reedom to musicians but also demands listening (as "being aware of the wole situation") to each other while playing. rock and metal musicians as well as classically trained ones not often get what jazz style of playing is really about: in classical and rock and metal bands there's a leader/composer and others are just there to play what was written without any input (even though they think they "contribute" something to the composition), in jazz band there's a leader/composer and others are contributing by arranging and twisting their parts to the point that what was brought in turns only into general idea what the music might have been. as piggy was deeply into jazz and avantgarde music these influences were brought into voivod music, that's why there's never been "music by piggy" but "music by voivod" - musically he managed his band and not ran it like a dictator. and that's what makes this band unique. chewy also adopted that kind of approach.
And at his age! He has the energy of a 20 year old. Incredible.
I just started listening to the “Outer Limits” album again after many years. I had forgotten how great it is.
Definitely. My favorite track from that albums is Lost Machine. So good...
Voivod,slayer,kreator,testament,sodom,exodus,motorhead and old sepultura is real legend thrash metal for me🔥🔥

I grew up with them, they come from Jonquiere (Lac St-Jean) 200 km from us, Quebec City the old capital and very proud of what they have accomplished.

Voivod is better than ever what a line up sounds great.
I've listened to these guys since the late 1980's. When I watched the video, I figured that there'd be one or two guys pulling hard to make the show come together right... All of these guys pulled. They all put out and did a great show. My hat is forever off to the guys I tuned out with way back then and to this day. Bravo brothers. You've done good.
There's something very no-bullshit about these guys.
No gimmicks. No bowing to trends. No overkill on anything. They're old, they're ugly, and they don't care. Just their own brand of hard-rock/metal - which sounds close enough to other music of its type to be accepted as such, but has a refreshing individuality to it. Perhaps you could call it prog-metal - but a lot of that sounds forced and intentional, and these guys don't. They just want to sound ferocious, and realize that having their music not do quite what you expect accomplishes that very well.
I’d say they’re prog metal filtered through a punk aesthetic. With a heavy dose of thrash.

@@marpsr Yes way back on Killing Technology it was a perfect amalgamation of King Crimson and Discharge, Away has always been into anarcho/hardcore punk.
@@gavinbuck8130 One of the guys here made a reference to their punk influences, and I can hear that. Even with their ferocity, there's a clarity to the sound. So much current metal sounds like stomach rumbles - croaking vocals, guitars tuned down to C or B or even A till the strings flap, double kick going Thudda-Thudda-Thudda-Thudda..... It's as if those bands are competing to see who can clutter up the bottom the most. Voivod sound like a rock band with actual SONGS, not a bad case of Montezuma's Revenge.
And, they look like they're happy to be there.
@@Baribrotzer Yeah unless you swap out for a 7 or 8 string there's only so far you can take it before it becomes indefinable sludge, Piggy always used standard tuning and around the Dimension Hatross era would often play high up on the neck, it certainly created a very unique sound, but then Hatross and Nothingface were just that, incredibly unique, there was nothing else like them.
VOIVOD is out of time band, always fresh and crazy !!! 🤘🤘🤘

VOIVOD has been one of my favorite bands since I was 11. That was the year Nothingface came out. I'm now 45 and I say " TO THE DEATH !"

Nothing face hadn't been out long when I started listening to them, I was 15 or 16. My parents were sure this heavy metal thing was just a phase. How blessed are we these guys are still putting out original music

My 80s heros! Always good as hell.
The first time I saw Voivod live was in Montreal opening for Rush in 1989 or 90 on the Presto tour. I was a young teenager, and I'm still remembering how the crowd was insane and LOUD when Voivod played this amazing, well-done cover from P.F Astronomy Domine!! 🤘✌🤟

I first discovered Voivod on Headbangers Ball back in 1990 with their cover of Astronomy Domine. I've been a fan ever since. Such a breath of fresh air in a world of bands following the same ol formula.

I met Voivod in 80 s with Dimension Hatross ı cant remember the song properly but Experimental Errors still listening Voivod Voivod unbelievable beautiful band Technical Melodic Thrash Metal

I could never forget after hearing Killing Technology in high school. It blew my mind,the guitar tone alone was enough to blow most bands completely out of the water
Holy.. absolutely badass, forty years a fan and they still kick my ass. I love this version of Rise off of Phobos, those E-force records are underrated.
E-Force albums are their heaviest ones. Snake does an awesome job on Rise here.

There's so few bands that have been active 39-40 years with this intensity and energy, maybe Conflict (UK) or Subhumans (UK), but none have been so innovative as Voivod.

Been a fan for more than 25 years ot something its been 40+ years for voivod and they still shredding, still thrashing- cannot believe this! Playin tracks from killing tech & dimension hatross! Back in the early nineties i was like the keewl kid in skeewl, listening to voivod & coroner when all the rest would listen to metallica, or listen to saint vitus & cathedral when the rest were listening to guns n roses and iron maiden..i was a rather picky kid when it came to my metl!
Jeez they sound just like the record, and it was put out over 35 years ago!

he was a sessions musician for that tour. Dan is an absolute work beast. He also played for Gorguts on the album From wisdom to hate and did a few shows.
