I rarely comment on videos but here i just have to. This is the first video that I’ve seen for you and i want to tell you, that I really like it! I really like your way of speaking! No unnecessary exaggerating or dramatic entrance or anything like that. Just plain and simple explanations. No fancy editing and special effects ect.
Thanks for the good review! Appreciate it very much. Have a nice day?
Well thank you !
I’m amazed how sharp and detailed the f4 version of this lens is, this one should be a winner too 👌
It is always a pleasure to watch your videos as factual as they are informative. Thank you
Thank you for watching!
Man, its so refreshing to watch a review of a lens then find out that the guy reviews actually knows how to take pretty pictures.... so many huge CZcams’s here (no names) talking about cameras and glass and take horrible quality pictures.
The old one looks so much nicer. I would paint a couple of nice gold rings around it.
Its not that important, but in my opinion is a ugly lens aesthetics.
@@brunobm5365 when your paying that premium price little things matter
The distance gauge feature is really nice, thats such a modern approach to the old school lovely depth markings on the classic AIS lenses etc, really handy for picking out when shooting landscapes or focus trapping for street/fast paced work! I like that a lot!
I'm excited to see the picture quality review!
Hi Ricci, I'm really liking the idea of a hyperfocal depth of field scale being reborn In the digital world.
Cheers
Hamish
Ricci, great videos! Question, does the new S version feels as well built as the F lens? Trying to see if the built quality is comparable to the f mount, how does it feel in the gane to you?
I like that is slightly smaller and lighter than the older non-Z DSLR 24-70 2.8 version(s).
On a Z body, it is considerably more compact than the F-mount because it requires no FTZ adapter.
Great to meet you at NEC on Saturday, supper talk and some lovely images to. Just amazed at how much you got way with cropping wow. Thank you.
Expensive but a really beautiful piece of kit.
Would be great investment to go Pro if you just got the Z series now, however I will probably stick with the F4s and Prime F1.8s combos
They did such a great job with the f4s that if you don't need the 2.8 there's an argument to be made to pick up the f4s. As an event photographer I'll likely get the 2.8 but if I were to go out and shoot some landscape photography it would be nice to have the smaller/lighter f4 as well.
I have tried this lens in a Nikon event two weeks ago. It’s very very sharp (sharper than my three F mount lens 20 1.8G, 35 1.4G and 70-200 2.8G II ) and fast focusing. Also as he said, the balance of weight on Z camera is pretty good. Worth to buy it.
Does digital display on lens helpful to find infinity focus? does infinity is really at infinity ?
Nikon lens 2.0 technology. Customizable ring and lcd display and made in Japan. I will be saving for this lens instead of the 24-70 F4.
Great review. It would be great if you made a video about the autofocus settings you use on your z6 and give your thoughts about the AF-C for shooting wildlife and how it compares to other nikon pro cameras. I really think that the z system is the future, but I see a lot of hate on the AF-C and that's really important for many people. Do you think it will improve with the announced firmware update?
Enjoyed your 14-30mm images. However, I decided to wait for the 14-24 f/2.8 S version next year and will use my 14-24 F mount until then (one of my favorite lenses). Also wondering if I will keep my f/4 when my 24-70 f/2.8 arrives or if there will be a flood of those lenses in the secondary market.
May stay with my Z Mount 24 -70 F4 and just save every penny possible for the 70 - 200 Z mount. Buying the 2.8 will put me out of getting the 70 - 200.
Nice lens, appreciate that you cannot show or say too much as the lens is 'pre-production' but you did mention that the Z24-70 was much sharper than the F mount version, my question is how much sharper is the new lens compared to the F4 version which came with our Z6 and Z7's?
Also, I was trying to find a video on the Z 35mm but cannot find anything on your channel, did you do a video on the 35mm or did I dream that you were going to do something?
Thanks for the video's always great to see the new kit.
I’m working on the 35mm it kinda took a back seat when I got a bit busy but it’s definitely being made. Will Be similar to the 50mm review. The 14-30 review will be up before that.
Not really compared it to the F4 but yes it will need to be better to justify the extra size and weight. So will be comparing them soon
Thanks for watching
Interesting, thanks, but I'm wondering about strange, flickering distortion on some of the b-roll of the lenses, early in the review. Was that shot with the Z? Guessing it's caused by autofocus. Minor correction: the F-mount 24-70 2.8 has 77mm filter thread; same as 70-200.
Thanks. It looks like a good value proposition for what I use my lenses for. I'll be very happy to have f/2.8 without carrying the size and weight of the F mount lens.
Can't wait for your full review Ricci... Thanks for taking time to do this!
Thanks for taking the time to watch !
Great tease Ricci :>) It looks like a must-have and less than I was assuming in weight and size. If it is "only" as good as the f/4 version is will be clearly the best mid zoom on the market. The predictions of the Z mount allowing superior optics at lower weight and size has proven to be accurate and Nikon's confirmation of its intention to have feature updates will make the Z system a great long term investment.
In the US market, MSRP is $2,299 so it is lower than the F mount 24-70 2.8 E version. I have the G and E versions that I use on my D850/800's and always liked them but found the 24-70 f/4 S was sharper, with better flare resistance on my Z6. The difference in the corners is significant. I suspect the f/2.8 version is going to be sold out for a long time due to pent up demand. I love the f/4 image quality and low weight and I am thinking of selling off my 24-70 E while the market is still there for it. This new S lens might be the trigger point for a lot of fence sitters to shift to Z cameras. If the May AF firmware update is as good as rumored, there will be few excuses not to. I have had the Z6 for 2 months and it gets used more than I would have predicted, and the excellent D850 gets a lot more shelf time, because the small light Z kit is with me much more often than the DSLRs. Every time I pick up the Z6, it feels like a new present just unwrapped on Christmas morning. The last time any product became such a sidekick to daily life was when I switched from a film A1 Canon to the Nikon D90 when it came out, and was with me every day shooting any and everything.
that display seems very handy at low light environments, Ive been in that situation for example when I want a specific focal length and I cant see whats the selected one. very cool function.
A great teaser which is very appealing. BUT when will Nikon start shipping to New Zealand? Their new 500m PF lens was realised in August last year. So far ONE has arrived in NZ in-spite of many backorders being on the importers books. I still don't know the official price of that lens just a ball park figure! Come Nikon - Read and react, please!!!!!!
Ricci!!!! We need the full review of that lens!!! Thanks! :)
Preordered because before going Z7, my favorite lens was the F mount version on a D3, D700, D800 and D750. It’s the perfect wedding lens IMO. This one should be lighter, not having VR.
It's the weddings money maker. Even though I rarely open it wider than f4 when more than 2 people are in the shot.
4:18 Also it's useful at really dark conditions, when it's impossible to see markings on the lens
Can‘t wait to see the review👍
I certainly hope the images from this new lense are sharper and better that the F mount version since it cost considerably more...mine's on backorder...
Really like your videos
Great video, thank you. When do you expect you can post some pictures?
As always you seem to be the first person to get hands on new Nikon gear and allowed to share at least some info) How?)))
is it focused by wire? Can you control by software the throw on the focus ring?
I like the depth of field, it is one thing that I miss on new lens. Also the display is lite so in the dark that will be handy.
Do you prefer the Z6 or the Z7 ?
Is there a slight wobble of the extending barrel? I've got mine yesterday and all of the samples in the store (3) had this slight wobbling of the extending barrel at any focal length. Looking forward to your reply...
@@christoph886 Thank you very much. To be honest, it is annoying to come from such an expensive and premium lens, but it’s good it doesn’t affect performance. Dirability… yet to be seen :)
Great expose`. When you do your "on camera" review, can you compare shots with the 24-70 kit lens at similar aperture and focal length to compare image quality? Thanks
Ricci, just curious is the primary body all plastic or metal?
They look awesome!!!
Thanks for the preview.
Can you tell us the difference between 24-70 F/4 and this.... Whenever yu do your detailed review that is...
Nice insight Ricci, thanks. Will be interested in the IQ vs the z f4 lens as I’m finding that is great and my f mount 24-70 doesn’t get used as much as I had thought!
Definitely something I’m gonna spend a lot of time looking into il probably make a separate VS video
Excellent, have to say I'm loving the compactness and weight benefits of the f4 but f2.8 does have that edge in some circumstances so look forward to the vs review. Will there one to try at the photoshow?
Yes there will be ! Along with the other lenses
Love it! Thank you
The pressure to be out with an evaluation of a product that does not even exist yet must be great...
Thanks for the video Ricci! Do you know if upcoming firmware update for Z6/7 will solve the focusing issues. Will it be match to Sony A7III? I want to get Z6 but focusing issues are what holding me back. Currently I am Nikon user :).
I have not focusing issues with z6...
24~70f4Sで十分!大三元は要らないと思ってたけどこれ見たら欲しくなってきた!どうしましょw
I think having this lens with a cheaper entry level Z camera (like the EOS RP) would be awesome. I don't think having a top display on the camera and on the lens is necessary. I like the one on the lens more.
What a big beast. I love my 24-70 F4 Z......
So do I, but I would love to have that f2.8 every time I am shooting in low light...
Torbjørn Øvrebekk yes, know what you mean. But the price difference...I just bought instead a 50mm & 20mm 1.8 (not Z)😉
Sharper than the F2.8G how? Center, corners, etc?
I have both Nikon DSLR and just purchased the new z6 but not sure I should buy z lenses just to use strictly on the z body vs continuing to buy f mount lenses and using the ftz adapter and have the luxury of backward compatibility. My 2nd question is when I’m using a VR lens on the z body with in body stabilization, do I need to disable vr or leave on and body will figure it out?
you do not need to disable VR. the camera will grey itself out since the VR is controlled via lens. it uses two axis from the VR on the lens and adds 1 extra axis(roll) from IBIS. works well. I have a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 with FTZ on my Z6. It's amazing how well it works... AF is lightning fast too... can't even tell that it's not native.
Hi, will you compare Z7 + 24-70 2.8 with D850 with 24-70 2.8 VR2 ?
Any updates on eye auto focus on z camera? Firmware update?
Release date is still May but it works really well
This look like I may well have to part ex my D800e and get a Z7 and this 24-70mm f2.8 but I will keep my D850. I do love what Nikon is doing and I just know a lot of pro are going to love this lens. See at the NEC.
This lens suddenly makes me think I might actually want a mirrorless camera. Having a D850 and D4S, I really don't need a Z6 or 7, but when Atomos/Nikon releases the raw video feature and another pro lens or two... That will be the time for me to get a Z6 I think.
I studied and debated for weeks between D850, Z6, Z7 along with the Sony A7III and rIII and in the end made a choice for more portable camera in the Z6 (I rate myself an upper end enthusiast type of photographer). I purchased the 50mm 1.8 and I put a deposit down on the 24-70 2.8 lens. I expect to grow and evolve with Nikon Zed as mirrorless lenses (and new bodies down the road) continue to become available. I'm thrilled with my choice.
Waiting for a review about the 14-30 and this lens :)
Is it smaller than the non vr 24-70 f2.8 f mount lens?
Thank you, sounds very interesting. 👌🏻
Thanks! But the screen on the lens looks like an LCD, not an OLED screen.
it's oled but i would rather lcd...
How would you practically use the DoF gauge in the display? It's fine and well to know that the DoF is bigger or smaller, but it'd be better to know *how* big or small it was. e.g. 3m, 3cm, etc. Or, does the length of the bars somehow correspond with the focal distance display above it?
Yes length of bar fits with the distance measurements above
It’s a short twist, when you twist on both ends.
Thanks Rick !
Thanks for watching !
How much does it cost?
Do the Z cameras have focus shift in camera? Does it work with all lenses?
Nikon has done a lot of work on the video side to minimize focus shift. If there is any it will be tiny.
Is the lens made of metal or plastic?
Adding one more question. Is there any reason Nikon is using less aperture blades in comparison of Sony G Master lenses. Here 9 Vs 11. Thanks.
Better engineering and design maybe?
Hi is it significantly better than the Z 24-70 f4 too?
I’ll try to find out over the next few weeks
Ricci Talks Thanks! Please post the full review of the 14-30 f4 too. Been waiting for it :)
Needs a gold ring
Can you attach a Samsung T5 portable SSD drive through usb-C like the Blackmagic pocket and use it to shoot video????? "Or use it as a second card" I believe that would be a firmware update.
I wonder about VR and internal Stabilizer which one is batter?
IBIS is better because it 1) works with all lenses and 2) doesn't risk compromising the image quality. Optical stabilization on wide angle lenses often risk ruining the edge sharpness.
how strong s the sound of the focus motor for video?
The sound of the steeping motors in these S line lenses are just about unnoticeable while focusing during video
Is there any price info yet?
Price info is out there as you can already preorder so check with a local retailer
There must be a HUGE image quality difference between the F4 and this 2.8 if you look at the price difference. And also the weight and size makes me think that I’m just gonna keep my F4 on my camera. I wanted to go lighter and smaller when I gave away my D750 + f2.8 lens and I’m gonna stay with that idea ... or the f2.8 must be out of this world perfectly amazing good😂😂😂.
cool
Why not f2 or lower tired of seeing all this hype around letting more light in just to get a 2.8 lens come on nikon
Because it would be big, heavy, and super expensive, and everyone would complain that it's big, heavy, and expensive (see Canon 28-70 f/2) and few people would buy it.
knightsabre7 just saying brother if company claims that there product can use it why not I’m sure nikon fan boys would be all over a 24-70 f2 even if it’s big n heavy.
Michael Her Why f2 or lower on a 24-70 lens? I don’t get it.
For what it's supposed to be used 2.8 it's enough. If you need something wider go sigma 24-35 f2 or just a wide aperture prime lens.
go to primes if you want less than f2.8 ...
$2300 and no VR? Maybe I should change brands. The Z's body stabilization is very weak tea. Nikon won't be very competitive against other systems that deliver multi-axis stabilization. You should include the FTZ adapter when showing size comparisons with F-mount lenses.
You’re on crack. The IBIS in the Zs is great. Much better than you would get with a stabilized lens.
@@PinchnerHouse I think he was talking about dual I.S.! That would be even better!
Pictures... Pictures? Who cares about the “pictures” the lens itself is sexy enuff!!!
Better design
Wanna to know about Z 9 ,hahaha
This is amongst the first of your, usually wonderful videos, that I found, in parts, to be wanting. Your seeming obsession to praise features of the lens that to any experienced photographer would constitute unneeded or even unwanted fluff was honestly disconcerting. The display of focal length and aperture is totally unnecessary. To suggest that a photographer can not interpolate the focal length between demarcations on the barrel or is overly burdened by having to refer the their camera's setting is foolish.
Don't know why Nikon is asking such a high price for non stabilised lens with external zooming !
Because image quality, what else? Canon 24-70 II also has no IS and zooms externally and is very expensive. Dumb question.
@@nikoolix
Shouldn't be more than 1500usd at any image quality !
So many solutions built in to questions nobody asked...
To me, the OLED is offering info I always wanted easier access to. And the customizable rear ring answers the largest complaint about G and E lenses for older shooters who prefer a manual aperture ring. The physical zoom mechanism seems to make more logical sense. I don't see what you're complaining about.
Cheep looking lens. Where is the old Nikon metal quality? :(
I had it for about 15 minutes on my Z6 and looks cool, precisely processed, a combination of metal and plastic, don't worry about its quality materials, some plastics now have better properties than metals ... I already have it ordered.
They can stick it there where the sun never shines. That price!!
For me it is a cheap looking lens compared to RF or GM lenses. Probably a great one tho
Disliked for saying Zed.
Wonderful
That Top display is a joke, an expensive one.....
