Jon Stewart on President-elect Trump, hypocrisy in America

  • After Jon Stewart left "The Daily Show" last summer, much of the presidential campaign went on without his unique and satirical point of view. Charlie Rose met with Stewart to discuss his new book about the more than 16 years he spent at the Comedy Central program. Stewart was quick to give his post-election analysis.

      I don't like his opinions or his ideology, but I do think he understands a large group of Americans right now. I think he's honest and believes what he says, even when he was on The Daily Show and making a comedy of it, he was still saying what he believed to be true. For that I respect him, but I think he's plain out wrong in many ways.

      It's funny how people feel like anyone with intelligence "thinks they're above everyone" or they're "elitists". It's OK to realize that other people are smarter than you. Intelligence should not be considered a negative trait.

      Thanks for letting me know that I don't know what it's like to be poor! I always thought the money in my bank account and in my wallet told me that I was poor, when all along I should of been looking at my skin color! I'll have to let my black neighbors know that I'm better off than them, since all of us live in Gary, Indiana! I thought it was the fact that I have to put paying off my basic bills from one week to another, because I didn't have money to pay them, or the fact I didn't eat the 1 meal a day that I usually get. Or the fact that when the money is gone, all I have to eat for a week I is Ramen noodles, or may be the fact that I drive a 25 year old vehicle, that when it breaks because I can't pay someone to do it. Damned white privilege!

      You know what? You're right.
      Here's the problem with being a conservative republican in the modern age: the party has a strong core of racists and it's a lazy person's act to equate the party with being completely FILLED with racists (which I don't believe).
      I actually don't think Trump is truly racist (well, no more so than a 70 year old white guy would be in America, which is to say "mildly, but not 'Klan'"), but I'm DAMN sure he made enough (thinly-veiled) comments about race that the racists came out for him.
      Not all Republicans are racist, but a majority of racists are Republicans - just keeping it real.
      But it's BS that you're being lumped in with them, and I'm truly sorry to hear that.

      dobbins2550, Stewart was standing up for you here. You have to understand that there were a lot of caveats he has to cover as someone who is generally liberal, he has to say things like 'I understand this is difficult for people who this creates a lot of uncertainty for' but his conclusion that he got to was that people say "all people who voted for trump are racist" and that that is WRONG and that a lot of people who voted for Trump did so out of legitimate concerns, and that there is a lot of hypocrisy in liberal circles when it comes to generalizing Trump supporters. He WAS standing up for you and I really encourage you to watch the video and listen to his message again with this in mind.

      +Sharkbiteleft It's very coherent. The left has slowly started to become what it's traditionally stood against: hatred of the other side. Both sides have been at each other's throats since the election.
      Martin Luther King wrote:
      "Time is cluttered with wreckage of communities which surrendered to hatred and violence. For the salvation of our nation or mankind, we must follow another way."
      "Our most bitter opponents we say: "We shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering. We shall meet your physical force with soul force. Do to us what you will, and we shall continue to love you."

      Sadly, what you wish for probably won't come true anytime soon... just look at all the comments from deaf-blind members of both "sides" in here, democrats and republicans alike... they spout the usual conspiracy theories, comment without even watching the video and listening to what Jon Stewart said, some just come here to say that his opinion "doesn't matter shit" despite it mattering a hell of a lot more than the opinion of any of these random people no one has ever heard of...
      It's just downright sad seeing so many people who seem completely unable to see the world in anything but black and white, and will hate anything and anyone who doesn't share their opinion without question.
      Sad... ironicly, the word that Donald Trump liked to put at the end of his tweets is the perfect one to describe all this.
      I can already see Trumps first State of the Union adress... he comes on stage, looks into the camera, says "Sad.", shrugs and walks off.

      Martin Sage Wouldn't a better outcome be us moving past this 2-party system altogether? It seems like it breeds the very tribalism Jon Stewart talks about in this video. We become too focused on putting down or defeating "the other side", instead of working on solutions that would benefit us all, considering we all have to live on this planet. There are things that a majority of us agree on (reasonable gun control measures, like background checks for example), but nothing gets done because of our broken system of government.
      I'm actually legitimately interested in getting your thoughts on this.

      A significant portion of Trump's support was from Bernie supporters and previous Obama voters.
      It's also blatant douchebaggery for you to say "At last. A decent person from the right." implying most are not decent people. I'm a leftist, but this smug and offensive attitude is why Trump won. Most people are very decent, including right-wingers.

      Like so many on the left, they are now hollow shells, a perfect representative of what their ideology has become. They used to laugh at fox news, but they are the new propagandists, and their empty headed celebrities from Cher to Madonna run amuck while they all stew in their low information echo chamber of smugness. They no longer have the intellectual or moral high ground, they censor, they lie, freedom of speech is now "harmful", "dangerous speech"..."hate speech". It's become notable most of their outlets closed their comment sections, Hillarys official youtube was locked down tighter than Anita Sarkeesians.
      This is the cycle, the establishment grows old, complacent, and corrupt. My guess it will take at least 8 years before they get better, because they clearly are doubling down on stupid with no sign of changing for the better. Many people who voted Obama voted Trump, no amount of mindless shaming from an exposed lying corporate media shill will stop people from noticing the truth, the left have become the most violent and dishonest side around, it was they who tried to assassinate the republican candidate twice, countless incidents of violence on Trump supporters and vandalism of property, they simply feel entitled to unlimited response due to their unlimited self righteousness, the mindset of terrorist. This is the left which is now constantly making up fake "hate crimes" to force the world to fit their distorted ideology, from smearing poop swastikas, to now faking hate crimes like the costco cake or the hijab pull, to the official inciters project veritas unveiled, the left simply no longer has any limit or shame, and so you deserve to lose.
      The reaction, the raw unrestrained emotion of the losers this election proved they do not have the temperament to lead.
      Hillary in her last act of abandoning her supporters in their moment of grief...proved she was not fit to lead, and that the american people made the right decision.

    I really do respect Jon, but in this I have to respectfully disagree. While a portion of Trump supporters may not be the type to verbalise racist rhetoric, by voting for him, they inadvertently co-signed everything he did that was racist. In an election that was purely based on policy, I think it's totally understandable to vote for someone even if you don't agree with everything they say; it wasn't the case with this one. Trump's entire campaign depended on his furthering of the 'us vs them' mentality, with the 'them' being Mexicans, Muslims etc.
    By contributing to his being elected, you contributed to the validation and emboldening of racist attitudes... one's that were/are very much a part of his 'policies'. So even if you're not the vocal and hateful racist that so many are, you are the type who didn't care about it enough to see that voting for him was voting for that.

    • @danhaynes446

      +Tuko Pomwene When they explicitly choose a leader who has a long standing reputation of lying, making racist, sexist, bigoted and hateful sounding statements, why shouldn't their choice of leader not reflect on their own values?
      Or are you saying that we shouldn't judge Germans who had no problems with their Jewish neighbors but voted for or went along with the Nazi party?
      If the Nazis can't be criticized based on the leader they rallied behind, then Trump's followers cannot be criticized based on the leader they rallied behind. Is that really an argument you want to try defending?
      What percentage of support from openly racist white Christian supremacists is required before the candidate, and therefore all of his supporters, can be considered supportive of racism?
      I'm guessing it's not a demographic that is measured (except perhaps by Southern Poverty Law Center) but I'd bet that 90%+ of white supremacists, racist organizations, and religious fundamentalists all voted for Trump.
      Hillary couldn't even attract 50% support from extreme left-wing Democrats, that's why she lost. Trump probably attracted close to 100% of the extreme right-wing. The candidates statements and plans reflect those of the people who elected them.
      I'll turn your position around (something you probably should have done before you posted it) and ask How does not pointing out that large sections of the population chose a leader who uses racist, bigoted and hateful sounding language and advocates racist, bigoted and hateful sounding policies, how does not calling out the association with racism and hate fix anything?
      If not talking about it is supposed to "fix" something, what specifically does it fix?
      How do things get fixed if they cannot be mentioned by name? Isn't that simply "The Emporer's New Clothes" all over again?
      Oh, and in case you think your argument can still stand, I'll toss the nuclear bomb in: "calling a large sections of the population"
      Roughly half the eligible voters voted. Trump got less than half the popular votes. That means he got support from less than 25% of eligible voters. Eligible voters. Not citizens, eligible voters. I'd bet if we could measure it, he got support from less than 20% of the US population. Of that 20%, what percentage do you want to bet was white, Christian and holds Christian supremacist views? Half? So the shoe fits maybe 10% of the populace?
      So "large sections of the population" is exaggeration. It's not like someone is calling 50% of American voters racist and misogynist bigots, which would clearly be a mistake. Calling 10% of the population, the majority of whom routinely express bigoted, racist or misogynist ideas
      In case you still think your argument can stand, you made another implicit argument, so let's turn it around and see how well you field the shot. The Republican leadership and the rank and file Republicans routinely claim that homosexuals are sinful/deviants/unnatural/undesirable/not deserving of equal treatment under the law. This is a matter of historical record, not a spurious accusation.
      According to Pew and the Williams Institute surveys, more than 8% of the adult populace (not voters) has engaged in same-sex activity.
      So if it's okay for Republicans to day in and day out call those people "unnatural" and equate their acts with pedophilia and beastiality *in spite of* all the available evidence* then why is it not okay for others to call Trump and his supporters racists and bigots *because of* all the available evidence?

      Dude, do you live in a bubble?
      1. Racist hire people of color sometimes for the purpose of not wanting to be seen as a racist. And sometimes people of color take jobs with racist because they want a job, aspire to climb forward at any cost, have no morals, and money is their God; therefore, they don't mind working for the devil.
      2. Trump and Hillary are the same, both corrupt, no argument there.
      3. He placed a white nationalist within the white house, who is an openly racist man, who held him accountable?
      4. How do you know how many kkk's are within this country? There are more than just the kkk, there are the Nazi skin heads, the Aryan Brotherhoods, and the Alt right, to name a few that subscript to racist views. Besides that, you don't have to be within a racist group to practice racist ideologies.
      5. The fact that his platform was based on hatred, sexium, racism, intolerance, and ignorance are a few reasons people started not liking him. People don't have to work overtime to attack him with things, it has been proven all he has to do is open up his big mouth. Hillary and him are one in the same. And as far as his insulting words referring to women that you say was 10 years ago, perhaps that could be a true statement if his character had changed, yet he's still the same vulgar person who still insults women.

      3. again if you do your research on Breibart , as many convictions as you'll find, you'll also find allot of contradictions, such as breibart hiring jews and muslims who are openly defending breibart, not the kind of thing you would expect from a white nationalist organisation, more specifically on Bannon, I never liked him but not because his racist
      4.Google, even if I were generous they wouldn't exceed 8000,........these guys can barely draw together a crowd big enough to shut down a street, but to make them out to be more powerful then they really are is what's really dangerous
      5. I don't mean to trivialize the issue but most men laughed when they heard what trump said 10 years ago because at one point or another we've all said it in the locker room to impress our friends, Trump is vulgar and brutish in his language I'll admit, but the left needs to try and UNDERSTAND why many people wanted to spite the democrats so bad by voting for a clown, if they can't figure this out before 2020 and instead continue with the tirade of insults and smear campaigns then Trump will get re-elected by he same angry people and maybe more.
      Again I'll say it again, to alienate a large swath of the population with insults is not gonna win the Democrats the next election, many of these people have no college degrees, are jobless, feel disenfranchised and feel like there country is being taken away from them, patronizing them or insulting them is not gonna fix anything

      u joking?
      Why do people like John Stewart and other stars keep on the same track by claiming Trump is a xenophobe? Did they miss the ENTIRE point? "Illegal"? Trump, myself and others are not cool with folks and most of all "CRIMINALS" coming over to the States and committing "CRIMES". Especially, when it comes to murdering "American Citizens" OF ANY ETHNIC BACKGROUND! Geez!? They act as if THEY HAVE NOT EVEN HEARD A TRUMP SPEECH!!! I imagine they have since they have SOOO much to say about his words/rhetoric etc. IS THAT a racist ideology? NO. IT IS NOT.
      I am a minority. Many of my friends are from minority backgrounds EVEN gay/lesbian/trans. WE ALL SUPPORT TRUMP!!! There are MANY more where we come from!
      All of these stars have SELECTIVE hearing. They are suffering from the "age" virus. They are SO FAR DISCONNECTED that they CAN NOT HEAR nor can they UNDERSTAND and COMPREHEND BASIC IDEAS! They are SO FAR CONTROLLED by the MASS MEDIA which is how they make a living, that their minds are so corrupted, they are NO LONGER ABLE to see from other view points BUT what they are spoon fed by the folks signing their checks.

    • @jphforex2151
      @jphforex2151 Před 7 lety +3

      I watched just to see what Stewart actually said about the election. Stewart - like most self-important celebrities - bashed away at Trump before the election. I watched it as MANY people actually think this guy is relevant. I also monitor ALL social media sites/news outlets/blogs, etc. - just to see what is being said - liberal and/or conservative.
      One of the first questions I ask anyone I come in contact with is; "where do you get your news"? There answer determines a great deal in how I proceed with that person. Stewart is biased left. Sean Hannity is biased right. Yes? Therefore, I gauge myself accordingly. I routinely call out BOTH sides for errors. Too much "Stewart"? Too much liberal claptrap. Too much Hannity? Too much Neocon.
      It is instructive to see what ALL sides are saying. THEN try to root out FACTS. I find Stewart to be lacking of facts - and heavy into one-sided speak. Therefore - just like many conservative "pundits", I eschew his "views".

    • @jphforex2151
      @jphforex2151 Před 7 lety +2

      Read what I wrote below to get your answer. I'd stop twisting the word "care" for what I actually wrote - which was that Stewart would be the last person I'd ask for views of anything. If what I wrote was "bashing", then perhaps you need some analysis.

    Speaking as a liberal-minded individual, all I have to say is that, the election is over, and all we can do now is pay attention to his inaugural address and watch closely for the next four years at his plan for this country. We have to give him an actual chance, and I am willing to do that even despite Bannon and the drama involving his son-in-law. It's not like he can deport Muslims and Mexicans overnight or institute slavery. We have checks and balances, and if our president steps over boundaries we can look to Congress to correct him.

      Dre, we just had open enrollment for health insurance at my work a week ago. I have United Healthcare through the state because I qualify earning only $33,000 a year for a family of five. Ive been sick for a year now and get a lung biopsy on Monday the 28th for a growing node. If I lose my Obama care, and have a preexisting condition that the insurance company can refuse me with Trumps original plan, I will die. I'll die no matter what, but by Trumps plan, I'll die in 2017 instead of maybe 2020. I have two teenage boys and a 9year old boy. These people care that I live longer then even I do.

    • @biggold8576
      @biggold8576 Před 7 lety +16

      Yes as the law stands they have to except preexisting conditions, but Trump vowed to repeal it. Then said maybe not, "we're gonna look at it". Meanwhile, my life is depending on what he does. And money seems to matter more then I do as a citizen.

      DreTheBeast I am a liberal minded individual as well but I highly doubt we can depend on congress to keep this fascist in line. The Republicans will see this as an opportunity to pass all their backwards agendas. Donald Trump is a narcissist who loves being the center of attention. He's in this for himself. Not for you, not for me and not even for his voters. He channeled hate, bigotry and racism in order to win. Exactly how Hitler came to power. When you have one party in control of everything there are no checks and balances. It's an Achilles heel in our system that the founding fathers probably never thought about. Democracy is an illusion. I respect your views and opinions but I feel compelled to disagree with you. One more thing, the Republicans support their base and their base is full of racist, hateful people. Don't expect Republicans to do the right thing.

    • @danhaynes446
      @danhaynes446 Před 7 lety +12

      +DreTheBeast Yes, we have checks and balances...and it's a Republican president, a Republican congress, a Republican senate and it's going to be extremist Republicans appointing and approving the next supreme court justices.
      Have you seen the obscene and hateful statements and laws coming out of the Congress and Senate lately? They've had a sick and perverted obsession with the sex lives and genitals of consenting adults this is none of their fucking business in the first place. Is that really an organization you can trust to rationally correct extremist behavior?
      The supreme court ruling on Citizens United? Is that really an organization you can trust to rationally correct extremist behavior?
      Obama halted the deportation of kids by executive order, what makes you think Trump won't undo that order? What makes you think that he can't or wont' go farther?
      I guess the real source of frustration and the real reason why people should reject the Trump and the Republican party he represents is because we're having to discuss such issues. It's *ridiculous* that a country that used to do what was right simply because it was the right thing to do now has to hold its collective breath to see if the shitbag that got elected is going to turn out to be Mussolini 2.0 or not. We deserve better than a bigoted idiot so dishonest and so stupid and so psychologically defective that we can't even guess what kind of hateful idiocy he *might* attempt tomorrow.
