  • Oct. 22 (Bloomberg) -- BLOOMBERG GAME CHANGERS profiles Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, now Jon Stewart, from his New Jersey boyhood through the standard struggle of the stand-up comedian - part time jobs and late night gigs at New York's comedy clubs. It will shine a spotlight on his early television shows and movies, including rare video from his early career, to show his transformation into the dominant American commentator of our time. Yeah, but Stewart is more talented than Colbert. Jon has not lost the trust of his audience. He is the same today, but he has a lot more to say. John Oliver again is more a desperate british version of Steward. He tries to hard and is lacking trust. Jon Stewart is smart, funny and has the originality that the others are lacking. They are trying to be like him, but they are nothing close to his talent.

      Why does being satire make it effective? Maybe in the UK, but in the US this is received by many as snide and unfair, especially younger Americans. Satire is just calumny wrapped in plausible deniability, with a side of smugness. Serious charges require evidence, not a clever turn of phrase, and deserve a jury not bored without a laugh track. Stewart handles debates so adeptly, you can tell his brain is consistently analyzing everything said. He is able to process a lot of information and retort with nothing but amazing statements that control the debate, while still completely disarming the previous statement. His true genius only shows in his interviews at the end of the shows or with other networks

    Wouldn't a fake newsman deliver fake news? John tells factual stories that I didn't know about. That's what a newsman does..
    It's like saying a teacher that also tells jokes is a fake teacher.

    • @EXRazeBurn
      @EXRazeBurn Před 9 lety +17

      mostmelon Jon initially DOES give you correct and factual information. The reason he portrays it as a fake news show (quite fairly to boot) is because AFTER that he injects both humor into the situation and usually his opinion on the subject at hand unabashedly.
      IN THEORY, a journalist should never make light of a serious news event, and most certainly should refrain from EVER injecting their personal opinion into the matter, thus ruining objectivity.
      The irony is with networks like MSNBC, CNN, and the worst offender of all FOX NEWS that happens all the time and they portend to be giving the viewer unbiased news. Stewart at least gives you the unbiased news first with the mutual understanding with his audience that his opinions will follow.
      So IN THEORY yes, Stewart is a pseudo newscaster delivering an intentionally biased news show. But in PRACTICE due to the failings of the mainstream media and the ethics guiding Stewart and his writers, his "fake news" is one of the most trustworthy places to find the truth in the mainstream to date.
      ...kind of depressing, yes?

    • @taaza2182

      TymeTwyster Last I mostly disagree. Jon is biased and untrustworthy and hides under the mask of comedy. He omits parts of real news stories to make Democrats look good and Republicans look evil. Jon is dishonest in that way and definitely not credible. FOX does make mention that their prime time shows are Opinion shows. We know where their Opinion lean, however at least the have the decency to bring on Democrats on every show everyday to share their opinion.

      It always seemed more like they did it to blast them with hostility, like to always make them seem like a minority with like half a dozen other people barking over them. When Jon invites a Republican, he's usually very civil with them.

    • @Mint325
      @Mint325 Před 8 lety +4

      Taaza 2 If the news media was doing their jobs properly, I'd watch it more often. Now I just get my news from Jon and from source online where at least I could do my own research and fact check rather than hearing a one sided story. You said "Jon is biased and untrustworthy..." sure that's your opinion and you have the right to it. "He omits parts of real news stories to make Democrats look good and Republicans look evil." Oh really...? Do you have reliable sources to support your statement? If you don't have it, then it's just another opinion of yours. I've seen Jon bash Democrats before on the show as well and not just politician but also big corporations anything that they are doing that is news worthy is brought out unfiltered (with a few bleeps of colorful words) followed by his opinion. For a fake news show, he/his team's facts cross checking skills is a hell lot more accurate then most major news media who has more staff and a bigger budget to work with. When it comes to news worthy subjects... He and his small team proved over the years that they did a better job (with limited resources and staff members) than all the other major news media combined.

    What makes John Stewart compelling and influential isn’t his sharp wit, there are lots of witty people. It isn’t his inherent sense of how to be convincing, there are lots of salesmen. It isn’t that he is a comedy genius. There are lots of funny people. It is his overwhelming decency, that has formed into a system of unshakable ethics. Put it together and you find someone who cuts through the noise, is heard, and once heard you want to trust the message. If you aren’t fundamentalist in your belief system, then you will consider what he has to say. Don’t agree with everything he says... but listen to him. His opinion is important.
