This is actually a historical event. They were the first American Rock/Metal band to be allowed to play after the fall of the the Soviet Union/Iron Curtin.
Edit: And it was possibly the largest gathering of fans for a band up to that point... it might still hold hold the record or be close?

It’s true history bro! The Cold War ended and the wall came down. This was the first concert ever allowed in the former Soviet Union. Several bands played there. Before this, the only way People in the Soviet Union could get American music was on the black market, or bootleg copies. Great reaction! Keep them coming! If you run out of suggestions just hit me up. I know you are probably overwhelmed with them but I’m always happy to help.

That's their most popular song, but that not even in their top 30 songs imo. That's one of the most poppy, that's why it was recommended. Listen to smth from their firat 4 albums, it will give better understanding who they arw. My recommendation would be "Master Of Puppet" or "Creeping Death" or "...and justice for all" or "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Enter Sandman is nothing, coming from huge Metallica fan

This was not the first concert in Russia…..in fact everyone from Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi and Cinderella (and many more) played in Russia before 1990. This concert was special because of the circumstances: it was a free festival supposedly a “thank you” to the youth of the country after a failed coup attempt. It was a Monsters Of Rock event and was put together in a hurry, held at Tushino Airfield just outside Moscow.
The crowd was so large because it was a free event. And all didn’t go completely smoothly. There were some deaths in that huge crowd.

This concert had about 5 or 6 bands playing. Pantera, Metallica, Ac/dc were actually the headline act for it. They went on last. Yes both Pantera and Metallica are from USA and Ac/dc are from Australia. Metallica were in their prime here, grand old age of 28 they were. Basically Russia/ soviet are not allowed any music but pianos/ classical, if found with anything other, you were beaten, held hostage even killed for it by the govt. You had to dress a certain way aswell. No above ankle dresses/ skirts for the ladies or youll be put in jail and beaten/raped by govt. It was like a concentration camp for general day to day life. You dont dare do anything bad or youll end up dead.

These metal bands went to Moscow to welcome them to the free world so to speak. This was a free concert after the fall of the Soviet Union/ Cold War ending (so we thought anyhow). Also the Berlin Wall coming down. Before this russia couldn’t get anything the free world had except for people who could get bootleg music. These bands went over there and provided them with this. It was free and blew up to an estimated 1.6 million people.

I am a former musician.. and I will say.. you may be a little nervous with 1.6 million people there... but not as much as you think. If your used to not only playing big crowds.. just Imagine KNOWING.. that 1.6 million people are not only there... But there to see YOU. .. You would understand.. they ALREADY love you.. no need to worry kind of thing.. just a lets have a blast kind of thing. lol .. actually.. ironically.. at least for me.. The bigger the crowd... the more hyped I was.. and the better I did and simply the more fun I had/crowd had! lol.

If and when you get to Creeping Death by Metallica I beg you to do live Seattle 89, instead of Moscow. Jason’s back up vocals are insane and the crowd participation is crazy. During this time in the 80s Metallica got very little radio air time. A few of their songs were regularly played on MTV but only after midnight on Headbangerz Ball. There was no internet, social media to drive interest in bands. It came down to the incredible music, and their talent. So it’s pretty crazy to see a whole stadium fully immersed into this concert and I mean FULLY. By 91 Metallica had hit more mainstream but even in 89 it was more word of mouth, buying albums and intern connecting with the incredible music.
Maybe I’m partial because my teen self was at the 89 concert and I can remember how Seattle was becoming a city for crazy rock fans so it brings back a lot of fun memories. In just a short time grunge would come out of Seattle. It was just a crazy fun time to be a teen.
I think everyone should see the Moscow concert to understand how much rock was loved but honestly the 89 Seattle concert shows exactly why Metallica rose to where they are.

Yo, I love seeing young people getting the chance to see what music was in the day! Not saying I don't like the artists now, but this band and others were what defined us. The past was a time of alot of teen aggression, frustration, and underrepresentation. The music spoke our feelings for us and gave us a voice that wasn't otherwise open to us. It's still the core of my inner monologues, I miss the true real honest fan love we had. Just getting the chance to feel understood and have the sound reflect our feelings was something a vide cant explain. Yeah Metallica was the first band in a few ways... Russia was the motal enemy of the us for half a century... This band even performing there was epic, but the fact that 1.6 million Russians also loved them and loved our music was unparalleled. Those kids also felt the same as us and the reality is that people are the same no matter what government they have. Metallica wasn't the choice to have such a huge following by most in media here, but you can see that they are proven as one of the greatest, EVER. I HOPE YOU SEE HOW ANAZING THEY ARE & that you can get more into the huge catalog of true masterpieces from them..😂

This was such an amazing time. It really felt like the world was on the edge of better days. The wall came down, Russia and USA were (mostly) getting along... there was just so much potential for peace and concerts like this, you could feel the hope. You have to realize in the 1960's they were doing nuclear drills in school in case of war and the The Vietnam war raged. In the 80's there was a stock market crash and HIV/Aids was running rampant then in 1989 the wall came down and by 1991 they were having free open concerts with American bands in Russia....In fact the 1990's were know as a time of relative peace.

Studio recordings are nice because the band and producers can make everything sound exactly how they meant it it to sound.
