- The Second Pilot for 'The Day Today'.
The Day Today is a British comedy television show that parodies television news and current affairs programmes, broadcast in 1994 on BBC2. It was created by Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris and is an adaptation of the radio programme On the Hour, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 between 1991 and 1992 and was written by Morris, Iannucci, Steven Wells, Andrew Glover, Stewart Lee, Richard Herring, David Quantick, and the cast. For The Day Today, Peter Baynham joined the writing team, and Lee and Herring were replaced by Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews. The principal cast of On the Hour was retained for The Day Today.
The Day Today is composed of six half-hour episodes and a selection of shorter, five-minute slots recorded as promotion trailers for the longer segments. The six half-hour episodes were originally broadcast from 19 January to 23 February 1994 on BBC2. The Day Today has won many awards, including Morris winning the 1994 British Comedy Award for Best Newcomer.

@MrBipson my favourite such moment, that always gets me is the Neil Kinnock prank call by Chris Morris. Phones up newspapers and says he has a recording of Kinnock kicking off with bar staff. Plays a bit of the recording and it's Coogan doing Kinnock

there should have been way more - come back Chris Morris, the world's even more mad than in 1994
Yeh its a shame there wasn't more but Chris is like all the best comedians he comes in gets the job done and then knows to quit before it gets stale, none of his stuff can get stale cos he kept it to one single set of episodes. I do wish there had been more Brass Eye though.

He's more like a fly that never lands for more than 6 episodes.
6 episodes of Day Today, 7 episodes of Brass Eye, 6 of Jam, 6 of Nathan Barley, then moved into directing, things like Veep, and then movies which have absolutely nothing to do with his old work.

The debate stuff is based on the late Saturday night, early Sunday morning show After Dark on Channel 4
It's odd really. Back then British farmers were smuggling their farms out, but now they're trying to kick non-British farms out.

Very underrated show.
You have to watch all the Debate 2000 bits to get the full impact (on the other pilot that is on YT). It is one the best thing they did. The comic acting, writing and piss-take of 'After Dark' at the end of this clip is genius: after the fight she says 'Right, well I think that's adequately illustrated what the French revolution was all about so let's move onto it shall we?' and the French 'writer' quips, again, 'What, its style or its content?'

E.g. the content of Chris Morris talking to a stranded submariner is good, but the style of him interviewing him in an overly comedic way (asking ridiculous questions about fish, telling him he's with him all the bloody way etc) isn't quite right compared to the proper show.

Oh yes, Chris Morris has balls, he has no nerves and you will see that if you look at "Speak Your Brains" segments on the full series. I remember when he interviewed actor John Challis from Only Fools and Horses sitcom, to get his reaction to Clive Anderson the talk show host being shot dead by presenter Noel Edmonds. Straight faced and no nerves.
Definitely sounded like it, I thought it was just another sketch at first but he really did ring a Macdonalds and start talking shite hahaha

A pilot is to send off to TV broadcasters as a sort of demo to what the show is about. Chris probably made 2 of these to get it just right
