  • The original pilot episode of "The Day Today"
The Day Today is a British comedy television show that parodies television news and current affairs programmes, broadcast in 1994 on BBC2. It was created by Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris and is an adaptation of the radio programme On the Hour, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 between 1991 and 1992 and was written by Morris, Iannucci, Steven Wells, Andrew Glover, Stewart Lee, Richard Herring, David Quantick, and the cast. For The Day Today, Peter Baynham joined the writing team, and Lee and Herring were replaced by Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews. The principal cast of On the Hour was retained for The Day Today.
The Day Today is composed of six half-hour episodes and a selection of shorter, five-minute slots recorded as promotion trailers for the longer segments. The six half-hour episodes were originally broadcast from 19 January to 23 February 1994 on BBC2.

You know, the horrible translation between PAL and NTSC TV standards is such a weird nerdy problem nobody outside of the industry should ever know about, but at 5:13 Chris Morris still makes a killer joke out of it. All the American segments of The Day Today were realistically blurry and ugly to the point I could believe Morris used actual NTSC equipment to film them. (Also I get a kick out of British actors doing American news anchor accents.)

athodyd That's what I love about this show, and similar shows which pay excruciating detail to technicalities like this, and to comic effect as well! They probably ensure the camera was set to the highest Gain level known to man. Never Twice Same Colour is a horrible standard, and one of the reasons I avoided US TV back in the day, when it was a major issue. Old episodes of fairly recent US shows look awful. The "American network" segments on this show are outstanding, authentic and absolutely hilarious, they are my favourite bits for sure!

This pilot episode is very much a tentative dummy run; the real thing that went out as the first TV broadcast is elsewhere on CZcams. It's faster, sharper, and has all of the OTT transitions, graphics and stings.
In the WAR sequence the pace is even more frenetic, and Chris Morris has perfected his impersonation of Jeremy Paxman in full shit-stirring mode. It's utterly magnificent. 😁

The attention to detail is staggering - the 'Stylish death' segment was of course filmed in the UK, but was intentionally put through a standards converter to make it look like a clip from the US, and the audio mixed quite hot as seemed to the style of US news back then - and even then Morris himself references technology, saying that he sees no gain in quality. It's such a small detail, and frankly one for proper anoraks, but it's amazing that he went to this much trouble.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of SNL, but people seem to love to hate it. Its a variety show, and the comedy is secondary to the musical guests.
The fact that they have any good sketches at all is impressive when you compare it to some scripted comedies which aren't funny despite having every opportunity to make them funny before they are aired.
A terrible SNL episode is funnier than a good episode of "Mike and Molly" (Haha, they're fat, get it?) and you get the musical guests and celebrity appearences on top of that.

19:04 basically incited would you lie to me. A familiar theme for most of the comedy in this show.
Edit, this show was way before its time, hence it has developed a small legendary meme culture of its own. Well deserved by the writers, and obviously Steve Coogan/Alan partridge went on to be a much bigger character than the show was ever expected to be, absolute top notch television from the errrrr 90s? Im too young to know, but still A1 quality none the less
