  • Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist who is now known for her extensive number of artworks relating to esoteric doctrines and occultism. Over a thousand paintings were donated to her nephew, Erik af Klint, after her death with the message not make the paintings public until 20 years had passed. However, during her years working as a successful artist, trained in classical painting, she was mostly known for her landscape paintings and portraits.

it wasn't the spirits telling her not to show her work. During a visit to her studio in 1908 Rudolph Steiner told her not to show the works for at least 50 years because he believed, and the whole theosophical society that art through the guidance of spirits was wrong.

Steiner s studio visit was the worst ever. Hilma stopped painting for four years (1908-12) before she resumed the Paintings for the Temple, in part because of Steiner,s rejection. Later, however, in the 1920s, she made several lengthy visits to Steiner,s headquarters, joined his Anthroposophy movement and changed her medium to wet-on-wet watercolor, which Steiner favored.
