A very nice reaction 😎! Doobie Brothers w/ Michael McDonald still perform in 2024. I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to The Doobie Bothers before: What A Fool Believes- Audio, Takin' It To The Streets, China Groove- Audio, Black Water and Listen To The Music. What A Fool Believes was the lead single from The Doobie Brothers' 1978 album: Minute By Minute. It was written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. It was produced by Ted Templeman. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #1 on Cash Box and #22 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The music video was directed by Jerry Watson. It received Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. In 2021, it was listed at No. 343 on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
The Doobie Brothers performed the songs: "What A Fool Believes," along with "Takin' It To The Streets," on the January 27, 1979 episode of Saturday Night Live.
The song is featured in the 2013 video game 🎮: Grand Theft Auto V.
The song was used in these movies 📽: Spiderhead (2022), Frankie And Johnny (1991) and Personal Best (1982).
The song has been covered by many artists including 📻: Aretha Franklin, George Michael, The Wades, Matt Bianco, Peter Cox, Eric Benet, Julie Pietri, Shane Richie, M People and more.
The song has also been used in these TV shows 📺: Mindhunter ("Episode #2.1" 2019), 30 Rock ("Cleveland" 2007), The Simpsons ("The Monkey Suit" 2006), Ed ("Crazy Time" 2001) and more.
    Critical Reception 🗣:
Billboard praised the vocal performance, synthesizers and production. The reviewer described the song as building from a melodic first verse "to a heart warming hook chorus".
Cash Box said it has an "easy funk backing, strings overhead and characteristically unique vocals which soar upwards".
Record World said that in the song the Doobie Brothers go to "an easy going beat with distinctive lead and high harmony hook".
Ultimate Classic Rock critic Michael Gallucci rated "What a Fool Believes" as the Doobie Brothers all-time greatest song, particularly praising "McDonald's soulful vocals and soft and warm keyboard riffs".
    Lyrics 🗒:
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
    The sentimental fool don't see
Trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created
Once in her life, she musters a smile for his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize it never really was
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
    Anybody else would surely know
    He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
    What seems to be
    Is always better than nothing
Than nothing at all keeps sending him
Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
    Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
    Anybody else would surely know
    He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be (if love can come and love can go, then why can't love return once more?)
    Is always better than nothing
    (Who got the power?)
Than nothing at all (oh, now)
What a fool believes he sees (I believe she's never gone away)
No wise man has the power
To reason away (to reason away)
What seems to be (oh, if love can come and love can go, oh, mama)
Is always better than nothing (better than nothing)
Than nothing at all (oh, I believe)
    The Doobie Brothers Info 📰:
The Doobie Brothers are a Rock band formed in 1970 in San Jose, California known for their flexibility in performing across numerous musical genres (Rock, Country, Soul, Folk, R&B, Gospel) and their vocal harmonies. A friend of the band and fellow musician, Keith Rosen, is the one who suggested the name: The Doobie Brothers, as the word “doobie” is a nickname for a marijuana joint that the bandmates often indulged in. Tom Johnston admits that they couldn’t come up with a band name and didn’t expect Keith Rosen’s suggestion to stick but it did and the rest is history.
The group has been active for five decades, with their greatest success during the 1970s, the group's current lineup consists of founding members Tom Johnston (guitars, vocals) and Patrick Simmons (guitars, vocals), alongside Michael McDonald (keyboards, vocals) and John McFee (guitars, pedal steel, violin, backing vocals), and touring musicians including John Cowan (bass, vocals), Marc Russo (saxophones), Ed Toth (drums), and Marc Quiñones (percussion). Other long-serving members of the band include guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (1974-1979), bassist Tiran Porter (1972-1980, 1987-1992) and drummers John Hartman (1970-1979, 1987-1992), Michael Hossack (1971-1973, 1987-2012), and Keith Knudsen (1973-1982, 1993-2005).
Tom Johnston provided the lead vocals for the band from 1970 to 1975, when they featured a mainstream rock sound with elements of Folk, Country and R&B. Michael McDonald joined the band in 1975 as a keyboard player and second lead vocalist, to give some relief to Tom Johnston, who was suffering health problems at the time. Michael McDonald's interest in Soul music introduced a new sound to the band. Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald performed together as co-lead vocalists for one album: Takin' It To The Streets, before Tom Johnston retired fully in 1977. Frequent group lineup changes followed through the rest of the 1970s, and the band broke up in 1982 with Patrick Simmons being the only constant member having appeared on all of their albums. In 1987, The Doobie Brothers reformed with Tom Johnston back in the fold; Michael McDonald, who had previously made several guest appearances since their reformation, returned to the band full-time in 2019 for their 50th anniversary tour.
The group's fourteen studio albums include six top-ten appearances on the Billboard 200 album chart, including 1978's song: Minute By Minute, which reached number one for five weeks, and won the band a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, while the single: "What A Fool Believes", from the album won three Grammys itself. The band has released six live albums, and numerous greatest hits compilations, including 1976's compilation album: Best Of The Doobies, which was certified diamond by the RIAA for reaching album sales of ten million copies, the band's best selling album. The band's sixteen Billboard Hot 100 top-40 hits include the songs: "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Black Water" (#1 in 1974), "Takin' It To The Streets", "What A Fool Believes" (#1 in 1979) and "The Doctor", all of which receive rotation on classic hits radio stations. The group has sold more than 40 million records worldwide.
Several of The Doobie Brothers' band members (Tom Johnston, Tiran Porter, Patrick Simmons) recorded solo albums during the group's hiatus with Michael McDonald being the most successful member out of the group as a solo artist. Michael McDonald's solo career consists of nine studio albums and a number of singles, including the 1982 hit song: "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)". During his solo career, Michael McDonald has collaborated with a number of other artists including: James Ingram, David Cassidy, Van Halen, Patti LaBelle, Lee Ritenour, The Winans, Aretha Franklin, Toto, Grizzly Bear, Joni Mitchell and Thundercat. In 2003, Michael McDonald earned two Grammy nominations for his sixth solo studio album: Motown, a tribute to the Motown sound. A year later, Motown Two was released. Music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated, "The album follows the same blueprint as the first record, offering highly polished, professionally produced, expertly performed interpretations of gems from the Motown vaults."
The Doobie Brothers were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on November 7, 2020. In 2023, the band was nominated for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The Doobie Brothers appeared in an episode of VH-1's documentary music series: Behind The Music, in 2011.
On November 5, 2014 The Doobie Brothers were featured musical guests on the 47th annual Country Music Association Awards to celebrate the release of their album: Southbound.
Original group member: Dave Shogren (49 years old), passed away in his sleep on December 14, 1999 at his home in California.
Original group member: John Hartman, passed away on December 29, 2021 at the age of 71.
In addition, to still performing their music live on stage, an extensive tour all across America is planned for 2023 - 2024 to commemorate their 50th anniversary.
