I didn't realize until a short time ago that the Capt Jack Sparrow character was all his doing. His dress, his mannerisms, his talk, the way he walked.... It was all his doing. He is given leeway to put his characters together as he sees fit for the role. Think of Edward Scissor hands; the character was all Johnny, it all came out of his genius head. Beautiful job, Mate!
And Disney dropped HIM! Losers! Hope they lose TONS of money on any and ALL his stuff!
Apparently the original script for Jack Sparrow was a hardened, serious pirate. When Depp first changed the character and played him in POTC1, Disney thought it made the character look too gay, but they played along once they saw the success.
He based the character off of Keith Richards. That's why he was hired to later play Sparrow's father.
I remember watching a documentary once and they were talking about how his clothes would look how he saw himself fully finished in regards to his belts the random things he had in his wig etc.
The lady was saying then he made him him. He looked into the mirror and they had all his ideas and his look in under an hour if I remember correctly. Don’t quote me in that. Hahaha
They had to search in other country’s for materials they used as he HAD to have those things for all the movies. I think there was only 1 hat made of leather so they had to find people to try and make exact replica’s. As you said: he made himself. They all took que from him. I also loved a bit in the movie where he has that jar of dirt running along the ship. All ad libbed. Apparently that’s why the rest of the cast looked confused as he would just come out with random stuff.

Depp is also one of those actors that cares enough how the big picture will come together. Most actors show up, read their lines, pick up their money and go home. Not Johnny.

The CGI in the POTC franchise was always subtle yet effective enough to make the scene look natural and not throw you of. It was always so good and fitting that it has never bothered me in any way, unlike with other blockbusters of that genre.

Most might not realize it or agree with me but I think and like how this scene shows just how perceptive Jack naturally is. Had it been any other character, they wouldve just completely missed the water patterns and wouldve been fumbling around trying to find the cave. Then you have Jack who is not only able to notice such a small detail, but also formulate problem solving in his head to ultimately put the pieces together despite the general appearance of him playing with the rain droplet.
He's a man that was a nerd, turned into a pirate by need. Then progressed into the world's coolest nerd
I think he was playing for 70% of that, but he refocused.

I like all Pirates movie but in my opinion,Pirates of Caribbean 4:The Strangers Tide is the best. The storyline,the efx,the adventure,the dicoveries and mysteries,everything is amazing. Not forgetting also,our captain,the one and only Captain Jack Sparrow. His performance is phenomenal. Johnny Depp didnt act as Jack Sparrow. He is Sparrow. It is his doings. Not as directed by others. He made that character alive by not acting but being the character itself. Thats why its so freakin good. Love this movie to death.
