Avocados (per tablespoon) have almost no sugar, fewer calories, >3x the potassium, >3x the Omega 3's, >2x the fiber, and a much higher portion of monounsaturated fats in its fat content. No hate here. Jobs took a punch in the gut in the late 1970's, and so did ALL employees. It was the first time when employers bought each other out and *DOWNSIZED*. This was a time when *tenured* professors with doctoral degrees were slinging hamburgers to stay afloat financially because they weren't being kept on. And professorships and fellowships shrank tremendously. Not even teens could work at McDonald's because those jobs were filled by adults who couldn't get a job in their field. Compare that to 1967,when a Master's degreed graduate in sciences especially could write their own ticket on where to work. They even paid for relocation.
In the 1970's,my Mom worked as a bookkeeper and could keep our family afloat and give us music lessons, membership at a swimming club, decent food (a roast on the weekend sometimes), a nice haul of presents from Santa Claus😉, and a bicycle. And much more. Gymnastics, (vinyl) records, boom boxes, stereos, X-mas tree, pets, and quite the middle class life while maintaining a nice car and house on a quiet street. Then late '70's we had to tighten our belts a lot! Mom had a harder time meeting our needs and Dad had bad times at the hospital.
She made some gambles by going back to university (which was doable) and applying for work as an accountant, which would raise our income and allow us to thrive.
I was able to pay my university tuition every semester in the 1980's, and I graduated with a BS and a Master's degree in Teaching. My tuition started at $900/semester. At the end of my degree, tuition was $1500/semester. Minimum wage was $3.30/hour and I was paid $3.40 an hour with regular raises. I got to $3.80 when I left in 1986. Iwas able to pay my tuition and books and have a school loan to pay back at 4%. I did have to refinance, and it took a while, but I was able to pay it back.
Not without setbacks, though. No one was hiring. All I could get was scut work at not much more than minimum wage. The jobs in my area (lab tech) did not last for a career, and I continued to struggle.
I was the caboose of the Baby Boomers. When I couldn't find a career, US jobs were already in decline. Wal-Mart discount stores popped up everywhere. Gasoline jumped from $1.00 to $2.50 and went up and down like a yo-yo. There were lines to gas stations in the late 1970's and gas stealing, and locking gas caps were a new thing.
Jobs and the economy never recovered from then on till even today.
I feel for you Millenials. You are bearing the brunt of the worst economic times. They will never call it a depression. That's a numbers game. If you cherry pick your statistics, you can make them say anything.
Keep demanding better. You deserve better. Don't let CEO's and people with old money (like Barbara Bush's boys) try to piss on your leg and tell you it's raining!
Demand a living wage. You deserve life you can live. You deserve your avocado on toast! (avocados prevent cancer.) we deserve our coffee house coffee! You can bet they enjoy theirs! They'll complain about your avocado on toast while they go to $200.00 a plate affairs and leave half of more of the food. And leftovers from catering? God forbid that anyone in a homeless shelter eat filet mignon, lobster, or shrimp. Or even escargot. Keep the poor poor. And they even put out laws that prevent people delivering such leftovers to homeless shelter citing health reasons.
Caterers know how to take care of food. And the worst you get from pizza is dry ingredients that perk up in a microwave.
The reason the 1% didn't drink coffee house coffee was because it didn't exist outside of groceries. Columbian was the best bean you could get, and the grocery had a machine that would grind it for you fresh. That was it.
Demand better Healthcare. Demand better jobs. You know who provides those jobs. Don't mind the crocodile tears of the CEO's on Wall Street.
    You truly deserve better.

I think that as people get older, they forget what it was like to be younger. For example, I hear a lot of people my age (and have since probably high school), complain about getting older and wish they were a kid again. But I always question whether they really thought this through and as somebody who remembers childhood really vividly, I would never choose to be a child again. As a child, I always felt powerless, had all my decisions dictated by older people because "they knew better" (even when sometimes, they didn't) and was forced to follow often arbitrary rules that served no functional purpose (don't wear hats in class? Forced outside for recess even though it's -25ºC outside?). Kids are also a lot more insecure and therefore mean to each other, so the social environment as a kids wasn't so great. All this to say, being a kid sucks and I would never want to go through that again.
If older people could remember what being in college or recently-graduated was like, maybe they'd stop reminiscing that those were the best years of their life too and sympathize with the struggles we're going through

Good parents that had a balance between being strict and laid back. Good social life with other kids (especially close friends or family members). Of course the best part, the only thing to worry about was some homework you could get done in like an hour if not less. Essentially giving us enough freetime to do whatever.

As a fellow Gen Z, I warn against being too prideful about our generation. I think we’ll fall into the same trap that every generation does: criticizing the younger generations as we get older. This stems from being too focused on our own generation and seeing ourselves as superior to other generations. So if we are to avoid continuing the endless cycle, we must be aware of the unique strengths and weaknesses of every generation, not just put ourselves up on a pedestal. We must also be prepared for the criticism we will inevitably receive from the younger generations when we’re older. They will have different customs and values than us, and our ideas and cultures will clash, similar to the conflict between Gen Z and the older generations right now.

The priest is in his mid-60s as well. His rebuttal to those ideas was two-fold, first, the world was never good to begin with, it's always been filled with sin, and second, when you say things like that, you ignore how God works through the new youth and how his love can show in ways that were completely different from when he was a kid. That really stood out to me. People are often fearful of what they do not understand, and fear breeds hate, which breeds more fear. Don't give into fear or hate, neither one is worth it.

THEIR parents had lived through the Depression so when the economy picked up after WWII and they could afford to give their kids a good life they did. That's what parents do. They strive to give their children a better life than they had. The problem is there's no handbook. Some parents gave their kids too much so when they grew up they gave their own kids too much too. It's way more complicated than that but at the end of the day, as the saying goes, children are a map of their parents. I'm trying to raise my own kids to be decent human beings. Treat others the way you want to be treated, work for what you want instead of expecting others to do it for you, respect your elders, etc. They don't have all kinds of screens or expensive stuff just because other parents buy it all for their kids (while struggling to pay for things that actually matter). Only time will tell what sorts of adults these children will be and we'll only have our collective generation to blame for it. Buckle up, Buttercup.

That's because their target audience is 55+. FoxNews has a demographic problem. They're only the "most watched" news channel because Boomers are watching them, but they are starting to die off. And Millennials aren't watching CNN or MSNBC because those channels don't actually report anything anymore. I could watch CNN 16 hours a day for a week straight and not know that there is a teacher's strike happening in North Carolina. So Millennials get their news online and on twitter.

That’s true tho. Like as time passes we see technology, information, and data rise. So it’s like objectively true that each generation is smarter than the previous. That’s what happens when you have more information, that is more relevant, that is more accurate, with more routes to get access to it, in more ways. While it isn’t immediate, seeing as millennials and current gen aren’t that different age wise and are relatively equal in their understanding and use of technology and information today, eventually current gen will surpass us. And as we gain more knowledge and truth about the world and universe, with more experience, we are wiser than the next one. Difference is we can use this too help each other, rather than divide us. Next gen can use their intelligence and we can use our wisdom to benefit everyone together, instead of just focus on ourselves.

Go to your youtube comments on any video about Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson or Larry Bird and you will be tsunamied by an orgy of hatred toward Steph Curry, LeBron James and James Harden who, as contemporary players, are "soft." Juno Chun I agree but adults are making their opinion clear on what they think of the Youth and that would definitely have something to do with it, especially considering that when most adults encounter youth with depression they just call it a phase or tell you to “just be happy” or that this “sadness” is caused by us feeling special and are depressed because we don’t get our way. Instead of helping the youth, the future, with its problems, they complain about it and bash younger generations for adapting to an environment that they created for us.

    It's classism disguised as generationism.
You won't hear anyone who lost their homes in the housing market telling millennials "to stop buying avocado toast". You won't hear a proud parent who watched their son or daughter be the first in their family to attend college just to be drowned it student loan debt and zero career options saying "millenials are the most entitled generation ever". And you won't hear the person who gave their entire adult life in service of a company just to have their retirement stolen from them say "millinials are lazy".
This is a matter of disconnection from the realities of today's market and economy by a group that became wealthy generations ago.

    • @Mr.Monacle
      @Mr.Monacle Před 5 lety +30

I hate to disagree with you there, but I can name like 5 people in my family that have had *those exact things* happen to them, and if they’re older than 40 they tend to hold the stance that millennials are lazy and entitled. It is generationism, and you’re right there is some classism in it, but as someone that grew up in a lower-middle class, and impoverished family, (depending on the time in my life), I can say that classism isn’t the majority of it. Keep in mind, I do respect and agree with your statement to a lesser extent, but, it isn’t all one or the other, but a healthy mix of the two. The classism of the wealthy trickles down into the poor where it becomes true generationism, as the people there genuinely believe the problem to be generational; that if they were in the same situation they would be fine because they are from a harder working, hardier generation.

Tankerspam What do you mean shitfest of a world? The world has experienced some of the largest economic booms in history in this century alone. If anything, bad politicians and corrupt government is the result of economic setbacks. For example, red tape hindering entrepreneurs from starting new businesses, requiring useless and expensive licenses, "progressive" taxes making business owners move, high minimum wages hurting small business and useless laws businesses have to follow that use up capital for no gain.
I blame the 2008 housing bubble on government and big bank working together for their own benefits (crony capitalism/corporalism). It nothing to do with the baby boomers "ruining" something.
The only thing that the baby boomers have done that was very wrong was the hippie movement. Thank goodness it was small.
I don't get it. People constantly joke and talk about how crooked or corrupt the politicians are, yet they rely so much on the government to "fix things". Third party spenders are lousy. Government is no exception.
You can't say you're joining the real world if you're relying on government to help you financially through loans or welfare.

In my old mythology class, I still remember when we were reading about the Enuma Elish (some of the earliest mythological stories in history) it would start with new gods being created from the old gods and then the old gods complained about them being "loud" and "abhorrent", even to the point of considering killing the new gods, before the new gods overheard them and killed one of the older gods first.
