Maybe not with Spielberg, when he celebrated the 20th Anniversary of E.T. he made sure the DVD release included both the Anniversary and Original versions.
Around the 30th Anniversary he decided to just remaster the original 1982 version, and that has been the default version since.

Plus as they said it is a metaphor meaning todays guns and problems they can incorporate into it. So if they want a unicorn getting it head blown off that's fine right, but if they add the wrong gun to D-Day dear god what have they done...
Yes but I think what he is getting at is that pointing out the guns as the most factually inaccurate thing there when you have a fucking, pardon my language, gummy bears charging the beaches is kinda like putting lip stick on a pig.
