Construct, a very peculiar word. Gm_construct is an amazing Garry's Mod map which we can all recognize, here are (almost) all of the steps it took to get here!

@@kiloisnear ABSOLUTELY
Nice pfp
Your PFP is so cursed-
Yeah
Very cursed metrocop
The "useless hallway" in the first iterations was actually a set of buttons to load HL2 maps.
so essentially, construct was just a hub world at the time? allowing you to access the game's maps? a substitute for the console?
@@webbtail245 I wasn't there, but that's most likely, yes. Although, there was still a sandbox - that small area, with a pre-spawnmenu control deck to create some (but not all) props.
Though you had to have the hl2 maps in your gmod/maps directory or else they didn't work, like in Surkee's case.
@@StabYourBrain Gmod was an HL2 mod so...
@@evdestroy5304 hl2 mods dont have hl2 maps because mods run on a different version of hl2 without the maps
Shame you didn't show the secret heart room (if I'm remembering right), but this was still a lovely history lesson all the same!
I dont remember hearing any sounds in the white room
@@tomherrison7631 okay, and?
@@thescruffinator8830 its just odd not knowing about the sounds in that room even though i played constuct for a few years
@@tomherrison7631 Did the video ever mention sounds in the room?
also mirror room
This map was like my own home, spent too much hours playing this map in my childhood
Same....still do play a lot on gm_construct
after a long time of custom maps, other than the cool and unique ones, I just decided to mostly play gm_construct
₣uú₣ç₣f₣₣
I remember spawning random shits then a war started lol
When I first played gmod, I had no idea on how to get addons so I played gm construct for a while. Now I have a million maps and when I play gm construct, I get memories of when I first played gmod
To me, gm_construct radiates the same energy as the backrooms.
Nah, to me it gives me an equal but opposite sensation to the one of the backrooms. Sure, it's a huge empty building that is uncanny for not being inhabited, but it doesn't feel eerie or creepy, just calm and familiar and full of potential.
Especially the black room, that shit always gave me the creeps, though it's good for making good horror films. It feels empty, strange, almost from another dimension, but to me, now it became a familiar map, like Dust_II back in 2004.

Yes, like dead but when many people are in a server still like dead or lonley
The images in the first map would load hl2 chapters if you had the hl2 maps in your gmod maps folder.

"Does anyone care about some holes in the roof?"
I love all changes, I'm a chill dude, but if you remove the holes in the roof, I am going to go ballistic.
Yeah me too

He said it before it was cool, before it even existed.
@Seth Carrothers FNF didn’t invent the term “ballistic” dumbass
6:50 YOU CAN COLOR THAT?! HOW ARE YOU EVEN SUPPOSED TO FIND THAT OUT?
Be a very curious child
Spirited Spy I DIDN"T KNOW THAT EITHER
Yeah it's great for green screening
I found out because of my horrible aim lmao
I shot at a chair and somehow hit the wall
The game usually gives you a hint notification when you enter the room.

Who needs gm_construct when you have gm_construct in flatgrass.
some people don't want to play on an extra big map that is kinda empty like flatgrass.
or that is just me. idk.
*_It's Big Brain Time_*
That map is fun, but something odd I found (might have been just my experience) was that the height and general size of the border was decreased greatly instead of being the size of flatgrass but merely adding a few extra meters to construct.
You make a solid point sir
Bruh i have that map rn
I literally had no idea you could color the walls until this video
Green screen room dawg
i never even knew color tool existed before this video

I’m surprised it all started from a white void
Everything starts from the void.
It actually makes a lot of sense if you consider the name "Construct." The video man didn't seem to catch on, but the couch in a white void from the first version of gm_construct is undeniably a reference to The Matrix. In that movie, they also have a featureless white room with comfy sofas that can load in any desired object. And the room is called... "The Construct."
I always figured Construct got its name from players "constructing" their Source creations in a basic environment, but it turns out it was actually originally intended as a reference to one of my favorite movies all along. Who knew?
@@QuintessentialWalrus I never saw Matrix, but the couch is so iconic that when i saw it i thought "A couch in a void? Like Matrix"
It was basically a hub for loading HL2 maps.
i love how all construct maps have those classic red stripe walls
Except the white one
don't forget the blue stripes in the middle.
I remember when the white room scared me a lot as a kid
I think I developed a fear from it after watching horror videos or being chased by sanic
SAME, DUUUDE
@@TobsterStrudel Man, I remember just going in the black room and spawning a paper Sanic, scariest shit ever.
@@herredward9277 the sound alone makes my heart jump.
But the dark room even more, I always used to think someone or something lived there.
7:03 is 100% a piece of history, it brings back a lot of old memories for me as well.
6:48 you were able to color it!?!?
Apparently yes
apparently there is quite a few that don't know that you can color that white room.
@@necrobynerton7384 2400+ hours and i didnt know that wtf.
Holy fuck. I have 3,100 hours on gmod and I had no idea.
I don't understand how so many people didn't know, it was one of the first things I did there
This was interesting history lesson about one of my favorite maps. The animation looks really good too. You deserve more attention my dude :D
Thanks you! :)

@@kiloisnear I think your just jealous that your comment sisnt get much attention but others do.
Good crap man. I see those animations. This video quality is like......Amazing. You deserve way more subs.
I hope when they make the source 2 equivalent of Garrys Mod, they carry the tradition of having a gm_construct
Gm_constructed
"The U is now _in_ the dumpster" I am trash! :D
I guess beforehand it would be called the dmpster
@@FearlessAbiter2dQw4w9WgXcQ lmao it took me a minute to get the joke
Surkee: You can colour the white room in any colour
Me: *smashes keyboard* HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT 5 YEARS!
My childhood literally.
If I had 24 hours to live, gm_construct would definitely be something to revisit
The one in Gmod 9 or 10 is in the workshop
I think he missed the obvious matrix reference. The white room is the construct from the matrix.
I love the evangelion font you used, great vid!
Thanks :D I had a blast making it!
I was never aware of just how many changes happened to that simple map! A much appreciated video, friend
Thanks for watching :)
2:30 those buttons were ment to Teleport you to Half life 2 Maps, They still work but only if you have HL2, GMOD 1
gm_construct 1 a text says: "sorry for the mess, i was playing too much with the spawner :/"
You can just pause it when it appears...
Grass, water, elevation, indoor building, basement, etc. The perfect map.
the sense of freedom garrysmod gives me isnt comparable to any other game ive played. I love gmod and it will forever be my favorite game
Just wanted to mention, the part about the GMod 12 version hosting the most popular GMod videos. The most popular GMod machinama were released prior to GMod 11. The video you previewed was released in 2008, which was a great year for GMod, not just machinama. Unfortunately those days are long gone.
Honestly i would love to play with friends on some of the older small ones because they look way more chaotic to play in
This is very well animated!
you got my ass crying out here man, this video was amazing. Thank you bro i felt my childhood again
For some reason seeing the beta version with the catwalk inspired me so much that I made a whole new section to my gmod map immediately, which as someone who spends 99% of their time in the hammer editor flying around thinking about things they probably should make but don't, is impressive.
I completley forgot about the rooms with the lights! I used to use them as jail cells for players on my server who were greifing. Nostalgia!
I aboslutely love gm_construct! It's just great in every way
I can't wait for s&box, gmod is my favorite game and the perfect one of my childhood, I can't wait to play s&box
Strange pure white humming rectangle: **exists**
That guy: T o u c h
shocked at how well paced and directed the animated bits were
You know...
GM_Construct is a certified hood classic
It's really cool how devs keep old stuff and put it in the final version like the corridor becoming the warehouse.
Seeing some of those old versions of the map... reminded me of the old War of the Severs movie made with the older versions of Gmod. That was a nostalgia trip I didn't expect to take.
This was actually very interesting! Since I joined after gm_construct 13 came to be, I never got to experience these older maps.
your hand animations are my favorite part about this, pure talent bro
Wow! This was a very informative video! Gm_construct was one of the best maps I've played on gmod.
Such an underated, well made video. I mean, i really enjoyed this
This video was phenomenal man, I am very fascinated by gmod history. Hyped for more!
honestly i didnt know i needed this until i did. Very cool seeing how different buildings took shape.
You can color the room? 3000+ hours of Gmod, and I didn’t know you could color the room!
This video was pretty cool but I wish you talked about the versions of construct that were made later on. I especially wanted to know what was all about that secret beta version that had underground tunnels, made for GM13. But still, great video!
I loved joining little kids sandbox servers with this map with my cousin and spawning trains until the server crashed... good times
I like the skit at the start and end x3
Great video! ^^
6:29 I remember playing an old Gmod version with this construct. I think it may have been 10
"the U is now IN the dumpster" cool
Well done video mate! I'll stay tuned for new ones!
Your presentation has so much personality, lovely video
GM Construct is my favorite map to create and play with stuff so I appreciate this
Ah, goddamnit.
I miss the comfy overcast weather in the older maps
Who needs gm_construct when you have creepy gmod its self?
Gmod is one of those games that sticks with me.
i wish they brought back those grass sprites, they complimented the grass pretty well
1:49 is an Evangelion reference
Great video man! I had no idea that the map's history went that far back!
Your accent sounded familiar, nice to see another Romanian on here, making cool vids like this
6:18 grew up with this Construct. Spent so many hours badly posing sonic models in the color room
Lol I love how the skyboxes buildings get closer and closer until they're part of the world
Garry's mod is a game of my childhood, where I found new friends who are still my friends tho. I spent 3000+ hours and still can play this game, i love this game for my best memories
how do you find ur friends? i have trouble finding some because i am new to gmod
@@sparrowizsecondlieutenant84 yeah mostly don't like noobs in gmod, so they hate you. But there is more who can help you too. Just play random gamemodes and you will find someone.
I remember the first time I played gmod very clearly. I opened gm_construct and the first thing I ever did was spawning in a chair and using a physics gun to move it around. I will never forget that moment.
Hey man, I love your video! Keep up the great work!
i fealt like i completed a goal, finished childhood while watching this video. Thank you for this video and lets thank Garry for our childhood
this is a really neat video, i'd love to see more videos about old gmod maps
This channel is so underrated, I’ve subscribed.
Really great video you should do more like this!
Ah, the nostalgia :)
Dude good channel, idk how i find this but good work men
LOVE the way you say dumpster
Also great video, very informative!
Anyone else remember racing people to the top of those buildings with some bad double jump mod in community servers? Good times
Normal person: why are you up at 1 AM?!?
Me: some things are too important
I think in gmod YOU are stuck in some level of the back rooms. That’s why you don’t see anyone but feel watched. Sometimes you see dark figures.
Great video man so many good memories
your channel is underrated.
REALLY UNDERRATED.
i was always scared of construct when i was young once i noclipped into an wall and saw alyx sitting in a chair in an empty room

These videos are so cool, seeing game map history
This video was informative. Thank you!
You don't go into the dark room. You just don't. You seal it and keep away.
No, embrace the dark room!
You must revel in its abyss for all of... four seconds...
Then go back to screwing around with NPCs and explosives.
I find it funny but also interesting that all of this started as a white room. Maybe the white room from Gmod 12 onwards is meant to reference that.
Here in philippines, empty indoor basketball courts near a forest and a building feels alot like gm_construct
This map just seemed so empty and barren to me, almost kind of scary. But it still gives me a sense of nostalgia for some odd reason even though I played this map when the map looked how it is now.
It’s very interesting to see this as a Gmod Animator myself
we all know to never go to the dark room.... unless your brave enough and armed with lights
i always wished i lived at one of the apartments in gm_construct
Holy shit dude this is so well done man, I see some time was put into this. good video 10/10 :)
