- In this video we say goodbye to our 2022 Toyota GR86. I must say this Neptune Blue GR86 has been amazing to own and drive, however something else caused the fun to come to an end.

I’ve been really looking into this GR86 for autocross and track days.
The more I see reports like this the more I realize I just need to stay with a Porsche.
More than 20 years ago I was tracking my 911 at Sebring and the following week went in for an oil change. When i thought the service was done, the service rep handed me the keys to a loaner 911 and said you can keep this car for two weeks; Porsche is sending a new engine. It was the early days of the IMS bearing failures. That is the kind of service I have always had with Porsche.
Thanks for sharing this uncalled for experience by a pathetic and poorly managed dealership and a manufacturer that doesn’t stand behind their product.
With service and reliability issues like this they should remove the GR tag and just 86 the car.
Hopefully they have fixed the relatively easy process of just not over using rtv during assembly at the Subaru Plant. When people ask between the BRZ and GR86 now say go with Subaru because they can’t point the blame anywhere like Toyota did with me.
I’ve driven many cars and my benchmark is still the 981 Cayman GTS that I tracked at Las Vegas Speedway. Poise, precision, quality, sound and over all enjoyment. Full disclosure my buddy was racing a Nissan GTR that same track day and he did pass me in the straights but in the corners he was destroyed, plus his brakes gave out on lap 4.
I have driven faster straight line cars than the 981 Cayman GTS but for over all satisfaction I have yet to find anything better.
I will be doing a video soon on what I just bought to replace the gr86 so stay tuned.

Like you, we also had a 981 and now own a 982 GT4 with PDK which we absolutely love. But I thought a relatively low cost “analog” GR86 manual could also be a fun addition….with lower maintenance costs. It’s really a shame to see what happened to you.
The word analog though is not in the GR86's vocabulary, it’s biggest drawback outside the issues we have spoke on is the NUMB electric steering. The car I bought to replace the GR86 is older and has hydraulic steering with excellent feel and if I want more I can always go un assisted in the future.
Maybe look at an Older Cayman like 987.2 had fantastic steering, lotus Elise, or an older miata is always a great choice
@@CruiseControl1 Agree ..the word “analog” is IMO not really in any and car since around my 1988 911. But the attempt for a manufacturer to make a digital car feel “analog” to me in this day and age is always appreciated.

Agreed most cars are only a facsimile of analog but certain cars do a better impression than others.
I think you will approve of the car I bought as it’s 24 years old.

Most car manufacturers won't accept responsibility honestly. When the trim in my expensive mercedes started to crack suddenly, I got in touch with the dealership. I was literally shooed away by the representative. When I reached out to corporate I was told I did not use recommended products for interior cleaning. When they can't point fingers at a partner, they will point fingers at the customer.
That is terrible and I wish companies would stand by the product. When something went wrong with my Honda Odyssey 7 years ago my local dealership took care of it right away.
This is a break up video with a toxic relationship with Toyota and Subaru. For those that back up an unsafe, unreliable vehicle that leaves you stranded, a car that has blown up and that has operational issues, to track and to not have the manufacturer back up the warranty, and for the manufacturers not to stand by the consumer are excellent points to say goodbye. Some people may not care for their safety or life. I don’t blame you for moving on-just drive.

I wonder if they'll issue a recall. At this rate, it's only a matter of time before they get hit with a lawsuit.
I wish there would have been but it seems doubtful at this point. Now I just want them to fix the process so it does not become an issue in future models.
They wont its not a pervasive problem...it is blown out of proportion. The manufacturer would rather drop oil pans then pay for people to get a new engine; hence no recall.
sorry to hear about this! I have been loving my GR86 so far as well with over 5k miles. Its crazy how Toyota promotes track driving, however its unfortunate when you cant trust they will have your back if the engine blows. Im glad Toyota paid for the oil pan drop. Sad to see it go. I still plan to keep mine and drive as is! I dont plan to drop the pan, and if my car is still alive at 50k miles, then hopefully I am safe 😅
I still love the GR86/BRZ twins! I just didn’t appreciate the dealership experience that only wanted to point blame at Subaru.
Hopefully you don’t have ANY ISSUES with your GR86 though. I already bought a replacement and will have a video on it soon.

The purpose of the "collaboration" is to point fingers. The Supra isn't suffering an RVT issue like the GR86, but who knows if any issues will come up with the B58 anytime soon. We haven't had new Supras driver for years and years. It's still a new collaboration. Thanks for making this video. It helped talk me out of the GR86.
I drove the new Supra and it was great as a GT car but I would say it weighs a bit too much for it being classified as a sports car.
As for the GR86/BRZ twins I think they are great cars I just wish the infighting stopped. It’s possible that Subaru doesn’t treat customers like the way Toyota treated me since they are the ones who really engineered the car.
B58 is an old and tried and true amazing motor.
Amazing motor but the Supra is heavy and more of a GT car vs being a light weight sports car.
Lmfao the key fob thing is incredibly annoying but the RTV thing is objectively not a big issue and your car never actually showed issues with your engine. Youre not going to get a car close to this one unless you can move into something in the porsche world realistically, and at that point I wouldnt have bothered with this car in the first place.

His car didn't show issues, because he got his car checked out before anything major happened. Your insanely delusional if you think nothing would've happened had he not gotten his oil pan dropped. If you saw his other video, and the picture of how bad the build up was, you wouldn't dream of making the claim that you just made.

I daily drive an old Camry, and my experience with my local Toyota dealership has been awful. I paid 140 bucks to get my car serviced and my car came back 5 hours later with the service light on and my tire lights still on. They said it was cold out so the tires got uneven, which is Bull crap because im a lazy bastard and drove into the dealership with uneven tires. When I asked about the service, a guy at the service desk said the oil looked brand new (which im skeptical about since I didnt get my oil changed until 8K+ miles) I still don’t know if they actually took a look at my car. For all I know my hunk of junk is still running on dirty oil and I’m down 140 bucks :/

The RTV issue is real. Anyone suggesting otherwise is just wrong. Regardless of how many engines did not seize up, there is still a major production flaw. I’d be less worried about the engine seizing. And more worried about wear to the engine as a result of too little oil. Does anybody want to drop $35k on a car that ‘s gonna last 70k, 80k miles before a rebuild? Who knows could be less. Doesn’t matter how fun the car is. This version of BRZ/ 86 is a very poor financial choice.

Regardless of how many problems didn't happen the problem is real? It seems like if it was a big problem we would have heard about more people actually smoking their engines.
The weird part is nearly every car maker uses machine applied liquid sealing solutions like RTV for their engines. If Subaru was doing it wrong wouldn't they simply recalibrate the machine or reengineer the process? Yet we don't hear anything about other manufacturers or even other Subarus having the same problem.
Subarus are having the same problem, even on the new wrx and yes they could easily fix it and I’m confused as to why they haven’t yet. But maybe they will soon.
Sorry to hear your bad experience, I am taking del of my GR86 2023 this week, your experience is kind of scaring me but all the research that I have done, ppl said that RTV wasn't an issue for everybody, I guess if your car was build on a Friday or on a Monday first thing lol.
Also the key fob malfunction happened to my Mercedes GLB so it happens I guess

Congrats on getting your brand new GR86! I love the car and would have kept it if the dealership experience was better. If you decide to have your oil pan dropped to look at your oil pick up tube, I had mine checked at 3,000 miles. If you are going to track the car I would recommend an oil pan baffle plate to stabilize the oil supply. Hopefully your car has 0 issues and your local dealer treats you the right way.
As a Toyota technician we don’t get paid diag on problems if it’s covered under factory warranty ie your key problem. (I’m my region at least) And when we do figure out the issue we get nailed on warranty time 9/10. This is an issue and many bad experiences customers have stem from this. I wouldn’t want to spend that much time figuring out if you needed an immobilizer reset or whatever. So a lot of time advisors are battling with techs to do a thorough diagnosis and techs get tired of working for free within an antiquated pay system. Hence the bad experience, excuses, blame game etc.

Hence the problem with flat rate pay, no offense but the consumer having to deal with BS because the manufacturer doesn’t pay they’re tech’s properly is f**cked up.
From a business standpoint in regards to toyota/subaru and the rtv issue like for-mentioned by others is blown out of proportion. People are like why isnt there a recall? Well strictly from a dollar standpoint would a company rather replace a bunch of engine blocks or just drop oil pans? They would just have everyone drop their oil pan if it was a significant enough issue instead of replace people engine's under warranty and ruin their reputation and cost ALOT of money. So that would lead people to believe that the rtv issue is ridiculous and is a hit or miss problem that isnt even remotely pervasive enough to address on a "recall" level. I have the 7year 100k warranty so I'm not worried about it on my 2023 brz 6mt limited.
From the perspective outside of the USA, I too remain disturbed by this ongoing issue. I totally feel for what you must have gone through. Like you, the RTV issue bugged me like so many others. The only dealer who can realistically sell me a car within a reasonable time frame is 2 hours drive away. I did ask if the warranty covers me should things head south from this known issue. I was assured yes. I was even told the RTV issue is exclusive in US only. However similar cases have been reported in other countries as well. I reasoned the cars are manufactured from the same plant in Japan without any reply. Food for thought, for those claiming RTV is a blown out of proportions, my question is why is there a filter in the first place in the oil pan? If collecting the excess RTV has been thought in place for the cause, there is no maintenance outline from both camps. If excess RTV creates no harm or whatsoever the filter should not be installed. It is there for a function. Will any manufacturer sustain a warranty if we choose not to replace the oil filter? With much being read and alot behind my my mind from the passing months just last week, I was offered a brz with 3 colour choices due for collection next month. Since the dealer is 2 hours away from me, I requested before I seal the deal if they may drop the oil pan for inspection before I drive off on the day of collection. Guess what, the salesman replied by forwarding his boss's reply. Plainly along the lines of unnecessary, unless a recall is mandated by Japan. Despite being drawn and attracted by the brz, it has been totally uninspiring to say the least. Great as the car maybe, I am glad I have decided not to lay down the deposit.
Thank you for your well thought out comment. I hope the RTV has since been fixed, from what I was told by Toyota Corporate is that Subaru had planned on making adjustments on the assembly line so that there would no longer be an excessive amount of RTV placed during the assembly process.
@CruiseControl Given there is no acknowledgment officially, I doubt much can be happening any time soon. Already there is an overwhelming demand for the twins worldwide from one factory to shoulder 2 variants for 2 brands. Any production changes may further delay the delivery. Unless there are increasing failures being brought to light I doubt much may be done. The logic for a filter buried behind the header and without any indication for replacement or maintenance is simply beyond me. @@Rayshader I love the looks and functionality of the RF ND2 Miata. The only thing I want to share is that even with the seat in the lowest position there is not enough room for a helmet with the top up. Other than that I loved it when I drove it. The ND 1 and 2 are the best looking inside and out in my opinion, you will love it. Congrats on your upcoming Miata!
Toyota and Subaru should be looking forward to a Class action suit pretty soon. They need to man up and admit there is a problem and FIX IT for current customers, and more importantly FIX THE MANUFACTURING process applying too much rtv - that simple.
The GR86 is a great IDEA of a car and I hope the 2024 by Toyota STOPS THE USE OF SUBARU ENGINES !!! WTH !! Toyota makes their own engines !!! Put a V6 Toyota turbo in this thing and call it good. Very disappointed in Subaru especially. Very. Very.. Very. Disappointed. Not going to be a Subaru customer any time soon - and I grew up with the early Subarus.
I have heard rumors that the next gen 86 will use the gr Yaris/ gr Corolla 1.6l turbo 3

@@CruiseControl1 I guess. As far as I can see, none of these companies are there for you unless forced. VW, Tesla,Ford, GM, Hyundai, Nissan BMW. As for a replacement for the GR86, that is a tough question. I think the Miata is about it if you want the same type of driving experience. I was going to try and buy a used Cayman when I switched tack and went BRZ. I am pretty happy with mine, as I think the sticker shock of dealing with Porsche maintenance on an old car would be problematic. I also live in an urban environment , street park and winter drive, so don't need a precious Porsche to worry about. Good luck with what comes next. I'd think your wife might like a 5.0 Mustang automatic. That must be a Hoot.
I bought a NB Miata for $4k as a replacement and will do a custom build on it for the track
@@CruiseControl1 Perfect. I currently own a 10AE Miata with basic track upgrades I will be selling in May. It has a Hard Dog roll bar, Enkei wheels and Lotus Elise seats. Love that car. The BRZ replaced it, but it must go come Spring. A fully track prepped Miata would be a fun project.
Mine is a base model, with a 5speed manual, lsd, new top, hard dog roll bar with winter tires since I live in Colorado. I’m glad I got it for the price I did but a 10AE would be great. What color is yours and how much are you selling it for?
