    This brought me to tears! I’m so glad you are finding your path in life, and tackling even the hardest things. Tay & I are only an hour away if you ever need help with projects or need extra hands. Admittedly, I am such an introvert but I think that community is so important moving forward with this homesteading journey. We’re so happy to start building that with you & others in our area. We’ve got this!

      Thank you, and same goes for you guys! The first year is such an investment of time, money, and energy so please feel free to reach out if you need an extra hand or want to borrow any tools. I know you have others closer by, but it would be great to meet up at some point even if it's just to swap some seeds. Good luck out there!

    Girl: I’m a single woman doing the same thing in Australia. Sold my gorgeous inner city house and bought a homestead. I’m pretty isolated. I’ve gone from wearing Chanel every day to skipping showers most days! I’m going “wild” real fast. It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever done but it’s also exhilarating - and it wouldn’t be anywhere near as great if I wasn’t doing it alone. The aloneness is what makes it remarkable and worthwhile (for me). Good luck to you :-)

    Girl! I got chills watching this video. Im so glad I discovered your channel! I was wondering if there were any other single homesteaders out there and I cant wait to follow your journey! Im at the beginning stages of homesteading but though I have no land yet (im looking) and no farm animals, i still consider myself a homesteader or at least an aspiring one! I know ill get there if I have faith in myself and have the mindset my dreams are possible if I decide to make them come true. I had a heart change on aspiring for a certain future vs putting it into action when my mom died in 2021. She died suddenly and unexpectedly in her garden at 57. Im 30 and single and want a homestead life, close to nature to enjoy the time i have in life. I know you get how much perspectives change when you lose your mom. Wish we lived closer because id love to be friends ♡ Im also i Jess fan, she got me through so much loneliness since my moms passed. Thinking of you 💕 and rooting for your success! 💪

      I’m a single “grandma” even though I don’t feel old enough to be one. I still have a full time job, looking at retirement in 3 years. My grandson is 8 and helps me. My daughter is a single mom, and I think what he learns with me may help him to learn some beneficial things for his life. I’m new at this…sort of… years ago I lived on a much bigger plot of land and grew things and had animals. Now I’m in town on a small plot with a tall fence and lots of neighbors…but here we go!! I’d love to have some community friends. Thanks for inspiring us!!

    I just found your videos today. I have been working hard the last five years or so to improve my credit and my financial management so that I could buy a house with a yard big enough for my dogs, a pool, and a small garden. But lately, I've realized I want even more. I have always had a secret dream of having a farm, so in the last few months I have been leaning more towards buying a house on land than just buying a house with a yard bigger than a postage stamp. So, I have been watching a LOT of homesteading videos here on YT, and I've been enjoying them immensely, but all of the videos I've watched so far are couples with children. I've never really come across someone doing it solo until you. So hopefully I can learn even more, especially about how to do everything with no help.
    That said, I also wanted to offer my sincerest condolences to you on the loss of your mom. I lost my mom -- also to cancer -- in December of 2021. I moved quite suddenly in September of 2020 to be near where she lived with her sister undergoing treatment because I wanted one of us kids to be close in case something happened (she had stage 4 cancer, so was never going to go into remission). I got a little more than a year with her after I moved, and my only regret in life is not spending more time with her that last year. I think my mom would have loved to see me not only succeed at my own job (I'm a self-published author), which I have been doing, but also to find the happiness and peace that I have been searching for that I feel certain a homestead would bring me. I know it will be hard work -- especially going it alone -- but I believe I can do it if I am truly determined. Thank you for sharing your truth and showing the world that it can be done by woman alone.

Great qualities that are getting lost in todays world. I know this is last years video, and it sounds like a really rough year. I am sorry about the loss of your mom. That has to be hard. I am one of those shall we say "late born" children so my parents are much older than I. There are alot of stories there but I dont want you to fall asleep. I dont know the situation between you and your boyfriend but I can tell you he is not going to find a more dedicated, harder working woman then the one he had. I admire your strength and courage. First time watching you, and I am so anxious to see more! I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. My mama is 83, and her breast cancer is back and has spread. I am 62 years old, recently retired from a back injury, and I have a small homestead. Pigs, chickens, bees and rabbits, and a big garden. I grew up with small farming, and have had gardens and chickens almost everywhere my husband's job has taken me.He still works full time, but helps me where needed. I feel like you and I have a lot in common, and I look forward to watching you grow!! One tip I can give, since you raise meat birds, it to buy dual purpose birds. They can be also raised as egg layers, and you don't have to butcher them all at once, like Cornish Crosses, which are sterile, don't live very long. Its the way my dad, and others did back in the day. Just butcher what you need at the moment! I grow Delawares. They aren't the greatest mamas, not very broody, so I hatch their eggs in an incubator, and never have to purchase chicks unless I want to! Huge healthy birds! Research them and let me know what you think! There are also other varieties that have plentiful meat, and lay huge eggs too! God bless you on this beautiful journey you have chosen!!

    Hello Sage, I'm new to your channel, i just started watching them today. And I got hooked and started benge watching while doing work around my homestead. I am a little older but can relate to losing my mother and homesteading by myself. Although as i was doing this when my girls were young and still living with me I never considered it homesteading. I was a single mother just trying to survive and take care of my girls in a natural and healthy way. I had sheep, a cow calf pair, chickens, ducks, and a couple of pigs, on and off growing a garden and working a 40 hr job. My kids are gown and now giving me grandbabies , as I watch these videos and realizing all along I was homesteading (I still struggle with believing that's what I'm doing) but i am starting to see thanks to videos like yours. My next project to learn is making homemade baby food from the garden I grew and i appreciate the information and knowledge that you bring with gardening. I ain't going to lie, its hard doing it by yourself but very rewarding when the meal you put down in front of you and your family was all grown and produced by you and the extra health benefits is a plus too. I am very sorry you lost your mom, and she will always be in your memories and your heart (mine still is). But that love and the memories will help you through it all. I pray for peace and comfort as you go through this journey, you are loved. Thank you again for the videos and sharing your knowledge.

    Hi, Sage. I’ve been down a similar road with losing my Mother to breast cancer. I admire your courage. My babies are what kept me getting up in the morning during one of the darkest periods of my life.
    I’m on a slightly similar journey. I’m married, but homesteading isn’t my husbands thing whereas it is mine. He does support me though, he doesn’t help me. I’m not complaining in that he works long hard and provides for our family. But searching homesteading by yourself brought me to your channel and I really like it. Keep going!

    Wow, wow, wow. What an emotional load you have been carrying. Thank you for sharing. I trust the old adage " troubles shared, are troubles halved " applies to you after these revelations. I am guessing that prioritisation of life's demands puts vid at the lower end of the must do list. You have moved to NC for a reason, yes, on first glance it could be simply to be a homesteader, but you made a big choice and subconsciously you knew that there is an already existing community of homesteaders there. I live in Brisbane Australia watch Sow the Land, The Hollar Homestead, Justin Rhodes, Permapasture Farm NC channels, Lumnah Acres NH,Good Shaw Farm VT, and have seen a little of Roots and Refuge and several others. As you settle into the district and get to know others I am sure the heavier tasks will attract help from unexpected sources. My condolences re your Mum, and saddened by the suffering she endured. You obviously carry her memory close to your heart. A many people do not deal well with isolation, and that is part of farming in general, not just homesteading. Seems Antonio may be one of those, and yes he was a great help in getting your farm to where you are. Once again thanks for your honesty. You can do this...and one day you will be looking back in joy and happiness at the strength you have shown, in building your dream, and developing your self reliance in the face of many daunting experiences. May the Force be with you. Cheers Rich.. btw remember you were named "Sage" for a reason!

I have raised 7 children and still consider myself a novice in many ways. Just keep going! It is so much fun and rewarding! I can’t imagine myself not doing this, from making sourdough… my new gig 😎 to raising rabbits, chickens, ducks , pigs from time to time and also my huge garden💓. Oh yes, I work full time night shift in a hospital setting. I am married and yes he shares some of my interests on the farm but as he slows down I need to pick up the slack since hubby is older than I. What a wonderful life you are building and yes, do everything that you want on your farm , I’m sure it will be fantastic!!

    @shandysgarden Před 5 měsíci

    Hi this is the first video I've ever watched of yours and I'm going to follow! I'm jealous that you're right in the area that I'd like to be.
    My family is in Fayetteville North Carolina and Rock Hill South Carolina and Columbia South Carolina and Union South Carolina. Everybody says Asheville is where I should go but I've seen properties all over. It's sort of torturous to be looking at things for sale now because it's just going to depend on what is available when I need it. Just like you I'll look at a couple things and I'll make a decision. It's scary because some of the homesteaders say they wish they would have not bought land first before leasing a little bit to see what they actually wanted but I don't have time for that I'm going to go right into the deep end...😂 LOL
    I've been dreaming about starting my Homestead by myself since 2019. During the pandemic I had a few months of paid time off and I jam-packed my little 1,000 ft backyard garden. I have maxed out this quarter acre classroom!
    I'm finally going to be buying my property this year. I don't exactly know where I'll land but I've been studying for so long all the big names on CZcams and learning so much and doing all I can in the city to get ready. From having a garden to selling seedlings to building Community to preserving and cooking from scratch like always... Plus freeze drying as well!
    It's something that I know I can do and hopefully it's easier than everyone think it's going to be for me.
    I've been dreaming and learning for so long! I can do this. I'll be working remotely still when i move, too.
    I have family stretched all the way from here where I am in Ohio to the Midlands of South Carolina so I'm not sure where exactly I'll buy. I am studying all the laws everywhere now because it's coming down to selling my house hopefully soon. I've been in Ohio for 30 years but I miss my family in the Carolinas. I've missed my little brother's growing up and now I have nieces and nephews that will hopefully love learning what their Aunt Shandy is doing!
    Anyway, nice to meet you Sage and I'll be following along. Pretty inspiring stuff you're doing here! I know I was in the right place when I saw the chicken tractor and electric netting!
    Roots & Refuge Farm, yes!! Jess & Justin were my first loves. I went to HOA finally last fall in 2023 in Front Royal Virginia and I was so happy to meet some of these people and spend the whole weekend around them. Of course I just wish Jess would have been there!
    I met Justin and Rebekah Rhodes, the Stivers, Jill from whispering Willow, Jill Winger, Mike the fit farmer, Joel Salatin and some others.
    I'm just like you where I make big life decisions with full confidence. I'm going to be absolutely by myself and even if it is intimidating I'm just going to have to scale it to where I can manage it because I don't have any help at all I'm doing all of this post divorce and after my kids have been raised. Nobody's interested in this except for me. I'm REALLY hoping I end up centrally located between all my family in the Carolinas and of course all the homesteaders that we love.
    You've got some pretty good neighbors nearby. Not only the Rhodes family, but Ben and Meg Hollar and Jason from Sow the Land...
    30 channels that have helped build all if these passions inside me!! We sound like we're in the same amazing spot.
    I'm curious about my future but I can't tell you exactly what that dream is going to look like. I can't tell you if I'm going to have raw land only or be in a camper or find a Pole Barn company or mobile home...
    It's so fun that we have these empty canvases but I absolutely know that we can do it!
    I don't know what I will focus on first but I keep my 5 year plan. Don't get into analysis paralysis just do the next best thing in front of you. You know all the good lessons. You got this!!
    I will be 53 years old this year and I can't wait to build a community!! Hopefully I'll meet you one day😊
    Sorry to hear about your mom. That will always be an adjustment. The tribe is strong and hopefully you are connected to the abundance+ Community ❤ Keep your eye on the prize and grow something lovely. I don't stop, either! That's how we are.

  • @shandysgarden

    One last comment/question- The way I think I might raise chickens will be a shipment from Murray McMurray the first time so I can go ahead and harvest them and put them away. I'll probably go with the Cornish cross that first time.
    I I'm sure I would be able to process them myself, but I'm probably going to reach out to the community to find some help!
    Anyway, I'm thinking about going with breeds that are more sustainable and not having to rely on the hatchery after that. Like heritage breeds. That's more of a sustainable answer. Let them raise their own chicks. That way, maybe one day I'll get to the point where I'm butchering them as I need them. Right from the yard. What are your thoughts on that?

    • @terranovaacres
      @terranovaacres  Před 5 měsíci

      Heritage breeds will take longer to get to harvesting weight than Cornish and will give you less meat per bird. For these reasons, they're generally more expensive to raise. If you are able to provide a significant portion of their diet as food scraps and free ranging (you would need a LOT of space), it could be cheaper to raise heritage breeds. I prefer designated meat birds because you can raise them all at once and be done with them all at once. I don't care to maintain a larger flock of birds throughout the year, and that's a personal preference for me. Just a matter of what works for you. It can be done, but cost and time management are two main reasons people generally opt for Cornish cross instead.

    Thank you for posting. I am sorry I am not closer to lend a hand. Ironically I am in Centennial and would love to homestead but at my age I am too old. 😢. I will live vicariously through you guys and help whenever I can.

    Firstly, sorry for your loss. I am the only one who tries to homestead in my household so I do it alone as well. It sucks doing it alone some days.... especially on migraine days.
    TBH I live the same way with the big decisions. I thought I'd be cute and look at 20 or so and we settled on what is now my nightmare house. I should have stuck with the second house that we looked at! So many water problems, facing the wrong direction, sits at the base of a hill, septic died 2 weeks ago, trees have smashed 2 cars so far lol. It's been a big mess.
    You've got this!! I always keep coming back to see what you have going on. I always wonder, how in the heck does she only have 1.9k subs still??! 😂 I'm sure I've commented on that before.
    I can't wait to see what you do with the place!! So excited spring is coming.

    When I donated the five cups of coffee, I did not know that you had lost your mama. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. Because I had stopped the video having been so impressed with you, up to that point, I wanted to support you, but hadn't heard about your mama. You can do this, love. Build your community, sweetie girl, and get those sheep.

    I never thought there was so many woman homesteading alone. I moved onto my property last year and even though im not single i am doing the homesteading part alone. Im in northeren north carolina and im an introvert. I keep saying i need to find somekind of homesteading support group or anybody who is remotely interested in homesteading to brainstorm with and possibly help each other on the weekends... I need some homesteading friends badly.

    I’m a new subscriber and I find it quite interesting what you’re doing so how much land do you have and how much is usable

    • @terranovaacres
      @terranovaacres  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The property is 3 acres. When I got here, about half of that was forest, and I will always keep a significant portion forested, but I'm working on turning about 1/4 acre of that into pasture. The garden is about 1/4 acre, and there's about half an acre of house/"front yard" space. I'm working on converting the yard into more gardening space, but it's not there yet. And the remaining portion is pasture. I have much less land compared to what you see most homesteaders working with, and it honestly works great for me.

    • @terranovaacres
      @terranovaacres  Před 8 měsíci

      Also, absolutely none of it is flat. By strict definitions, most of it isn't "usable" agricultural space. But I disagree and I use it anyway.

    You worry far to much. I probably should have watched another one of your video's first as I feel many people would think was such a tear jerker. Life is not a tear jerker, Sure there are up's and downs, but there is also many things we learn and I'm sure your last partner gave you many things and experiences to remember for the future. Now you just have to downsize till you get all the basics consistently right. The worlds weather has been changing for years now, will things grow like they did last year if i do everything the same, should I rotate my crops , should I start growing everything I need to feed my chickens instead of buying their food. Just 2 questions to ask yourself. Remember you are growing soil, much more Browns than Greens.

    What about safety? how do you protect yourself

    • @terranovaacres
      @terranovaacres  Před rokem +2

      I personally think there is a misconception about women living alone or women living in a more rural setting in America as being vulnerable. I don't feel any more or less safe living alone, and I honestly feel safer living where I do than living in a larger city as I have experienced both. Although I don't care to get into the details of the exact safety measures I take (because that's a great way to teach someone how to get around them), I would say I do the same things I have always done and probably will always do whether I live alone or not. One thing I will say is that having kind and caring neighbors who look out for you goes a long way.

    I was watching. Enthralled. Then..you say how you could not have done this without Antonio. While I am delighted you have that....your lead to video is very misleading. You ate not homesteading alone. Don't advertise.you are. I won't watch your channel again due to misleading.

    • @terranovaacres
      @terranovaacres  Před 4 měsíci

      I said the exact opposite... I said this was never contingent on him doing it with me. At no point did I say I could not have done it without him because I do not believe that one bit. I simply acknowledged the effort he put in for the short time he was here. I absolutely AM homesteading alone. I have been homesteading for two years at this point with a year and a half of that being entirely solo.
