Finding Fatwood in an Old Stump

- Fatwood can be challenging to find in some areas. One place you may want to look is in old stumps. If you see a rotted stump that still has sides sticking up like spires on a castle, take the time to scrape the outer edge off and check the inside. You may be lucky and find an easy to collect source of fatwood

If there are any remnants of the tree that the stump belongs to you may have a better chance of identifying if it is a pine tree. I have only ever found the fatwood on pine and occasionally spruce trees. Thanks for commenting

Hi Tedd. Just one way I find fatwood. The most common way to find it for me is cutting off larger dead pine branches as near the trunk as possible. There is often a ring of fatwood around the outside for about six to eight inches up the branch. I have not been successful yet finding it in the roots of a fallen pine like I have heard from other people

Yup. Especially in our area. Does not seem to be as common. I have found it on white pine and spruce trees but only smaller quantities. I just dug another old spruce stump out and found some more. Felt good. Thanks for commenting

We do not have pine in South Central or more Northern Alaska but we do have spruce. Fatwood in spruce is quite rare here in Alaska but where you showed finding it in this video is one of the ways that I have been able to occasionally find fat wood here. Good advice in your video. Oh btw, I bought a telescoping hotdog roasting stick and converted it into a "pocket bellows" due to the info in one of your videos and I love that handy little tool. I find myself using it almost daily for one thing or another.

It is an old Wetterlings wildlife Hatchet. Unfortunately discontinued. I am testing and will soon review a reasonably priced hatchet from Prandi. Thanks for commenting
