It's been weeks since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine began. But despite repeated pleas from Ukrainian officials, no one is sending Ukraine fighter jets. The back and forth between EU, NATO, Poland and the US has been almost comical, but the reason, is #NotWhatYouThink #NWYT #longs #Ukraine

I think we are saying the same thing here. No one has sent the MiGs because of the concerns over Russian escalations, even though they may have wanted to send them. What was interesting was how the US supported Poland sending the jets by themselves, but not through an American military base.

Ukrainian here, few days after announcement about jets was made I was on my grandmother's farm which located 10 km from polish border and I heard a lot of aircrafts which were flying really low but weather was very cloudy so I didn't see anything maybe it is just coincidence but still kinda suspicious. Also Ukraine inherited around 650 4th generation fighter jets/ attack aircrafts from Soviet union some of them were sold some of them recycled but many were in unworking condition. So I believe that many of those aircrafts were brought to life because I spotted a lot of mig 29 which were taking off from Lviv international airport on which territory located Lviv Aircraft Repair Plant pretty often since December 2021.

The hot potato argument reminded me of Ukraine asking for Australian Bushmaster armored personnel vehicles. At the time there was a reluctance to give Ukraine heavy vehicles so when the request was made on live tv of the Australian parliament it was guaranteed to get noticed. The Australian military immediately thought tanks would be better but our Abrams tanks were due for retirement so the suggestion was made that we give them to Poland as training vehicles and they give some Russian tanks to Ukraine.
But the real purpose of the request was to motivate the US to supply heavy weapons as the threat of coming second to Australia in the supply of armored vehicles was some thing they didn't want to deal with. So a few days after the request Australia has processes in place to ship APV's to Ukraine but no one cares because we came second to the billions in weapons sent from the US

There are a lot of limiting factors involved. The USA would give more, but the USA needs to get approval from the EU and Poland or Romania.
The USA does not have any territory bordering Ukraine. Also, if it were not for the Black Sea being locked in by Turkey, then the US Navy could do a lot more. I would really like to see the Russians try to blockade the US Navy from any other area, except the Black Sea.

While training a new fighter pilot takes about two years, *transitioning* an already experienced and qualified fighter pilot to an entirely new model of fighter takes about two *months* (and that's at USAF "peacetime" timelines).
So the "lead time" of any such program is still an issue, but not nearly as much as often stated - it's do-able in the "near term" (we could have existing Ukrainian pilots qualified and competent in the F-16 or other Western jets by late summer), but useless in the *immediate* term. And a similar timeline would hold up for establishing the infrastructure to support the aircraft (training mechanics, getting the necessary levels of spares in inventory and have the pipelines established to get parts from the warehouses to the flightline, etc.).

    • @Zarobien
      @Zarobien Před 2 lety +10

USAF has the advantage of numbers... You can have less trained flying support to more experienced... It's different for smaller airforce facing bigger airforce. Your pilots need to be prepared for all possible scenarios and work with all the assets you have.
My country booted all flight personel over 30 years old, switched command language to english and brought in US instructors, when it switched from migs and drakens to hornets.

    • @UsmanSiddiq1
      @UsmanSiddiq1 Před 2 lety +17

@@Zarobien The manual you are talking about gives this "2 months timeline" on transitioning in case of same family and avionics, like it takes 2 months for transfer from F-16 to F-18 but the period for transition to 5th generation is 1 year. That's in case of similar avionics in almost all platforms even 5th gen but jumping from Soviet Era avionics to F-16 block 50 would need at-least 2 years.
Even after that Russia can easily outmatch these aircrafts by taking out bases and disrupting supply chain......
Pakistan have F-15(block 50),Mirage and Chinese J-10 and according to their manual going from F-16 to J-10CE requires 2 years due to presence of fifth gen tech in aircraft but at the same time, going from Jf-17 block 3 to J-10 is 2 months in case of Chinese heavy variant of Jf-17.

It will take a lot longer than a few months to train a pilot to fly an American aircraft. The pilots need to be able to win a fight for their lives; otherwise, the pilots' lives and aircraft will be wasted. It would be much better to try to hire former USAF pilots as mercenaries, like the WWII flying Tigers.
Ukraine would need a few hundred F-16 or F15C. Give a former USAF pilot 500k dollars a year plus 50k dollars for every verified Russian aircraft they shoot down.

Cuz If anything, IF the US really wanted to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, the US would break up with NATO forever. In 1991, when the USSR collapsed, the Russians dissolved the Warsaw Pact. However, NATO was not dissolved. It was the opposite. NATO grew in power, in territorial extension and in the number of allied countries. (And NOT precisely "Allied Countries", but rather "Countries Subordinate to the will of the US", which is the correct name). In this war Mr. Putin is DEFENDING his homeland. Mr. Putin is fighting today against only ONE Country (Ukraine), cuz if he doesn't fight Ukraine today, then tomorrow he will have to fight against 30 countries that make up NATO. At the end of WWII, NATO had 8 allied countries. During the height of the Cold War, NATO already had 14 countries in total. Today, when the USSR and Communism no longer exists, there are 30. Just in case we all forgot. Mr. Zelensky was a television Comedian who won the Presidency of Ukraine thanks to Mr. Petro Poroshenko (this one of great academic and political merit), who was ridiculed for the Parodies that Mr. Zelensky made on TV. And why didn't Mr. Poroshenko stop these taunts and slanders against him? Answer: Cuz Mr. Poroshenko did not want to "Affect" the Freedom of Expression in Ukraine, and cuz Mr. Poroshenko never thought that a Comedian without experience and without political stature (without political or physical stature), could beat him in a vote. (The same case with Hillary/Trump. And for that same reason, Mr. Zelensky sent the two opposition leaders to jail and controlled Ukrainian TV militarily, with the support of the US). Well... Already as President, Mr. Zelensky dazzled him by the proposals of the International Monetary Fund (Headquarters in Washington, DC), in which he would be filled with money if he agreed to join NATO, it was easy for him to challenge the power of Russia. Today Mr. Zelensky is ALONE and friendless. Mr. Zelensky faces Mr. Putin in absolute solitude. What does Mr. Putin want? Answer: Russia cannot allow a NATO Military Base on its immediate border. What does the United States want? Answer: The US has almost 800 Military Bases spread all over the world, and they need another 800 more Bases, to subsume Russia. That is what the US wants: Subsume Russia. But... BUT, the US will not enter a war to defend Mr. Zelensky, cuz China would side with Russia. End of history and possibly end of the United States. Governing a country is serious business. A country cannot be Governed by a TV Comedian. Finally, for the US the issue of its National Security is something non-negotiable. (The Pentagon is PARANOID on this point). However, this same Right to Defend Itself, US is denied to Russia and it is also denied to all the countries of the world. No one in the world can pose a threat to the US, but in reality, the US is a real threat to everyone. Now, please read the words of Mr. Vladimir Putin: “Russia has always advocated for the creation of a system of equal and indivisible Security. A system that is vital for the entire world community. In December last year (in 2019), we proposed to conclude an agreement on Security Guarantees. Russia called on the West to an honest dialogue to search for reasonable compromise solutions. To take into account each other's interests (US-Europe/Russia). All in vain. The NATO/US countries did not want to hear us, which means that in fact they had completely different plans from the beginning… And we saw it”.

@@dexfuris7724 It's a shame a fellow Warframe player doesn't get the fact that there's more than 2 interests at play; Ukraine is a country of 43 million, Europe has a population of hundreds of millions who depend on Russian oil to not freeze to death in the winter as well as drive the infrastructure to deliver food to their shelves and let them live their lives. Faliure to respect that dependance could easily cause the equivalent of Ukraine's entire population to freeze/starve to death or die due to panicked violence over remaining supplies, which is not a worthwhile sacrifice to the at-risk countries.
Has the short-sightedness and unwillingness of previous generations of politicians to change the status quo and develop energy independance created a no-win scenario for the current generation that could be considered borderline treasonous? Yes. Can the current generation of people do anything about those issues in a meaningful timeframe to allow them to commit to Ukraine? No - even if they tried to, it would be hard to impliment reforms and develop the means to power themselves in time to allow them to help out and even harder to keep such changes from the Russians who could easily preempt such moves by prematurely withdrawing their support for the mobilising European powers.
It's one of the reasons why the UK and Poland taken the lead on this; with access to North Sea oil and supplylines to other nations which are at no threat of Russian attack, the UK can afford to be a bit ballsier in their actions towards Russia than the likes of Germany and France who are at immediate threat of national collapse should Russia withdraw their resources and Germany in particular would struggle to even import oil from elsewhere since all their ports are in range of Russian planes/missiles, meanwhile Poland's willing to take risks because they know if Ukraine falls they're likely next so it's better for them to win the fight in Ukraine than fight in their own land.
Also nukes. 43 million refugees is awful but not half so bad as billions bathed in nuclear fire because genuine threats were belittled as brinkmanship.

If we gave them our old Tornados or Hawks, considering the shortened training they would be on, they risk dropping out of the sky, with the possible deaths of the pilot and their trainer. Undoubtedly, the threat of nukes is keeping the supply engagements to defensive weapon supplies.
Jets would not make a difference without large numbers and proper tactical implementation. Russia, unfortunately, has SAMs that can reach from their territory to Ukraine. It’s already been difficult for Ukraine to take on many missions. Added jets may not even be able to fly due to SAM coverage.
Per dollar, there’s more difference that can be made with drones and man-portable asymmetric warfare equipment. The time to bring them operational is effectively zero, which is huge operationally.
Regarding country statements, NATO and the EU simply need to cooperate better and get their stories down. They have been consistent with their behaviors far more than the occasional statements that have been cherry-picked. What they are spending money on shows their involvement, not their statements.
Lastly, any arms sales decision has to make its way through significant bureaucracy, for a good reason. These checks and balances ensure that decisions aren’t as swift as what someone says randomly. The final outcomes will be in line with considered decisions, and statements will only give clues to leanings, as opposed to actual policies.

Though this does have to assume the systems are properly maintained and operated by competent crews. While on the whole the Russian military is pretty poorly trained, the Russian troops operating their newer systems are generally at least somewhat competent.
But against kinda outdated fighters like mig-29s, even with less than ideal maintenance and a pretty poorly trained crew, they can still pose some level of danger.
At the same time even old fighters like mig-29s are still expensive compared to other weapons. Operating them is also difficult since there needs to be infrastructure in place to rearm, refuel, and maintain the planes as well as runways.
Basically fighters are not a cost effective weapon to send Ukraine and their is pretty high risk of losing the jets to anti-air systems.

Will not happen, unless Putin would be completely careless about his people and he takes the destruction of Russia in purchase.
With the supplies we are it completely in international law, would even have the possibility to send troops. Should Ukraine allow/ask for it, of course won't happen, but to clarify the framework.
Conventionally Russia would have no chance against NATO, not militarily, not economically and not via cultural soft power.
Remains the nuclear option, the fear of which is just gladly exploited by the Putin fanboys to create more panic, so that they get their way for Russia and deliveries are stopped.
If Putin is not a complete madman, this option is not possible.
Never heard of the MAD doctrine?
Some escalation levels are missing and there were clearly more critical moments in the past, in Korea Soviets and U.S. jets shot each other down, in Vietnam there were 10 thousands of Soviet "observers".
      Russia's territoriality is not threatened.
Putin does not have sole control of nuclear weapons, at least 6-7 other people, from 3 pillars/parts of Russia must pass on their part of the code, including the Defense Minister.
Clearly these are most likely Putin loyalists, but the will also think about committing virtual suicide and giving up everything for Ukraine.
Also, NATO and Russia have said a few weeks before the war to nuclear conflicts that the use of these should not be an option for any state.
That would not make sense and would be a paradox:
Russia sacrifices itself to get their goals in Ukraine, but when they use nuclear weapons, they have nothing more of their successes.

I have already written a longer text about the atomic bomb, I can only repeat myself:
The threat of the atomic bomb is part of the Russian game. You can only understand that if you come from that culture. Russia does not respect the West, there are jokes in talk shows about sending a bomb to Washington and one to London afterwards. Russia is deliberately using that to intimidate because they know that the diplomatic West will shit their pants if even the word "nuclear" is mentioned.
I can give you a few reasons why neither the Russians, nor the Ukrainians believe that Putin will detonate the nuclear bomb.
Someone who is so worried about his life will not risk being blown up. It's psychological. Apart from that, he has children.
      2. the ignition is not like in a cartoon. The whole thing goes through several areas of responsibility minimum 7 people are involved and Putin does not have it in his hands alone. And there will always be a reasonable one in such a long chain. Believe that.
      3. he sells the whole thing as a "liberation mission" to free Ukraine and annex it to Russia through a pro-Russian anti-Western government. He could never sell a nuclear strike to his own people.
No one in Ukraine is toying with this idea and certainly not in Russia. It is only the West that rotates. One simply has to understand that the strongest weapon of Russian propaganda is not the atomic bomb, but the game in the head with our fear of the atomic bomb which consequently makes us stop thinking strategically.

Yep most people think that just because you give a Fighter Pilot a plane they can fly and use it as a weapon with only a few hours training. Even if that was true they need several hours of maintenance after each flight or two. The black boxes need Avionics Test Sets to diagnose them and highly trained technicians to use those Test Sets to fix those black boxes. Even with that you need special power requirements, specialized spare parts, not to mention the Engines, Hydraulic and Airframe Test Fixtures and parts. All this takes years to set up, build and train technicians to do this highly specialized work. So just giving Ukraine F-16's, F-15's or A-10's or any airplane except what they're already set up to fly and maintain wouldn't have any effect for at least two years. The best play is to give them systems they're already used to and ones easy to train on. You're video was spot on. Best Wishes & Blessings. Firstly, the US did - from what I see and I explain below - send Ukraine MiG-29's that we bought from Romania after the collapse of the USSR. We bought them after finding out that Iranians were looking at buying them. Pentagon spokesman Kirby did say we sent 'airframes' and 'parts' and then wouldn't elaborate further. The press started asking about the airframes part the next day and he responded this time just saying Ukraine has received many parts for the MiG-29's. And like magic, 25 MiG-29's appeared in Ukraine. Poland was not backfilled with F-16s, which the US was willing to send to them as brand new units that were supposed to be going to Taiwan, which only leaves the US as the potential supplier.
Second, the US base is in Germany, not the United States. It's much harder for us to make a call that could impact Germany than if it were on our own soil.
Third, that S-300 system Russia found Ukraine had been using after they destroyed it was very likely also American, as we had sent the units we bought in the 90's to study (though I forget where we got them from exactly at the moment) to Ukraine.

One thing not mentioned is that Europe uses metric units and US imperial, so it seems like an obstacle for Ukraine pilots, especially in a combat situation to "potentially" transition to the American airplanes with different altitude, speed, fuel amount and pressure units, not to mention learning a new plane, better to find a way to transfer Mig29s. Unfortunately, these airplanes are a substantial and important part of air defenses of the European countries having them - especially in the current situation. India has quite a lot of them, but that would be quite impossible.

Do you want to know why Russia has not been removed from the UN? Or WHY don't send fighter jets against Russia?

Javelins are popping tank turrets and 155mm arty shells are now wrecking Russian troop concentrations. Plus we are providing near real-time airspace surveillance and satellite data. Other than putting boots on the ground (and you can bet US and NATO advisors ARE on the ground in a training role in Western Ukraine) we’re all-in.

I think that NATO is trying to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia precisely because they know that the Russians could not handle it. They know that in a conventional confrontation the Russian forces will be decimated pretty quickly, which will leave them only two options: either engage in a humiliating withdrawal which would likely end the Putin Regime, or resort to tactical nuclear weapons. Obviously this is not a choice we would like to put to them.
In short, the major Western Powers have to avoid a conventional war because they are simply too strong for Russia to really have any choice but to go apeshit.
