Basically, if you were accused of being a witch you were dead one way or another. In the case of the dunking, if you drowned you were innocent; if you didn't you were either tortured to death or hung (at least here in the states) or burned at the stake in Europe. A definite no win situation.
Nah the punishment for witchcraft was strangulation in Europe as well (usually hanging). At some point it actually became a crime to accuse people of witchcraft, because in certain religious beliefs it's not possible to even BE a witch, so accusing someone of being a witch means you believed it was possible, which meant you were guilty of heresy, the punishment for which was being burnt at the stake. There's also a number of accused witches who were acquitted, including Henry VIII's great-grandmother Jacquetta of Luxembourg.
Well over 50% of the accused witches in England were acquitted. There is some appalling misinformation out there even in some scholarly publications. Many witches were simply of the wrong Christianity, ie Protestant when the Catholics were in and vice versa. It is a fascinating and incredibly sad history but please be aware of the misinformation, sensationalism and just outrageous claims that detract from the poor men and women who were jailed or tortured but very rarely killed as witches.
yup the salem witch trial
@John Cena but usually those using these tortures were so called Christians
Open christianic minds.....
This makes me wonder if I ever had any ancestors who've been tortured. It's awful to think some of this stuff is still happening 😕
Organized torture today is still quite common and much more advanced -- the Inquisition didn't dream of acetylene torches and electric drills and such, and God only knows what goes on at Gitmo or the secret special rendition sites.
Or if any of your ancestors were thee torturers 🤷♀️😕
Or if the only reason we’re here typing this is because our ancestors were the lucky ones.
(In my case I have found one “gentleman” who was the torturer just because he was an impatient bastard. Look up the case of Anne Askew while I blush.)
Did Africans have torture methods? If not then I don’t think so
Don't worry, most of it is used for death sentences in prison
Unfortunately, I may never get to visit a lot of these places you’ve been, so I’ve been living vicariously through you. You are really good at taking us on the adventure with you, I’m glad I found your CZcams channel.
I just visited this museum. It was ok. The video makes it seem so much better than it is. It's literally like a few rooms. 35 bucks and within 15 mins, it's completed. And on top of that, it's all replicas. There are no actual artifacts. Don't feel bad
@@DDR88767 Such a shame they did have the actual implements.
❤❤❤YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FEAR DEATH IF YOU BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, AND TRUST IN HIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART, BECAUSE HE ATONED FOR YOU FOR ALL YOUR INSULTS, THAT YOU WOULD OBTAIN PEACE WITH ALMIGHTY GOD, AND GO TO HEAVEN BY HIS GRACE!!!!!❤❤❤!!!❤❤❤!!!❤❤❤!!!❤
Absolutely horrific what people were put through for anything
I've never seen an interactive medieval museum before!
Thanks for taking us to these interesting places when traveling is scarce. 🙂
You obviously need to visit London .
I been to one at Wisconsin
So who's worse the heretics who questioned the church or those who tortured them in horrendous ways? I think most were sadists who enjoyed their work too much and probably should have been tortured themselves.
Thats probably why they did it, so the peeps didnt get tortured themselves... But, yeah i see what your saying
Torture everbody and everyone! Gnhrhrgrharaharrrr!
Oh the church is wasaaaaaaaaaaay worse
@@pheonixfire9517 i mean if you refused to give out punishment you could of have been seen as agreeing with the victim and would more than likely face torture as well.
Believe it or not, more than a few torturers were employed as executioners and it was a job that paid (not that well). They got up in the morning, ate breakfast, kissed their wives and children goodbye, and went to work. At the end of the day, they came home, ate dinner, went to bed, and did the same thing the next morning. Please don't get me wrong, I am not playing Devil's advocate, just stating how it was done. I have been studying Torture for years in an effort understand Man's inhumanity toward a fellow Human Being. I DO NOT condone torture in any form. I posted this response to foster intelligent conversation and to see how many others out there are willing to take me up on it.
“Warning, don’t sit on the spiky chair”
Me: no kidding Sherlock!
I’ve been in the torture museum in California and it was incredible. They have the devices there and you don’t really know what they are but you start reading the description and it makes your stomach turn!
After watching this, a question popped up in my head.
" How far is too far? "
Knowing beyond this actions done by humans make them more animals than animals itself. Which is terrifying.
humans are indeed animals, they are at the top of the food chain because its the species that can kill the best.
I'm from Portugal and I've been on quarentine since christmas because one relative tested positive for covid. I've been binging your videos and let me tell you sir you're the most wholesome thing on the internet ! thank you! I feel like I've been travelling this whole time!
Yeah, I watched a lot of these during Lockdown, it was a nice escape.
That's horrible what your country is doing about C-19. It's pointless to quarantine anyone.
@@Steve.Cutler Lockdown is not quarantine.
Covid is a globale scam !!!!

Your museum tours are always so exquisitely executed...you rule man!!

@@lucasstaples6637 dang it translated to something weird-
Intriguingly Atrocious
It's just like a haunted house but what's truly haunting is that these dastardly and demonic devices were actually once used to maim and kill people.
It stounds me how people were able to come up with all these horrific methods. For some reason though, nail removal really gets to me. I couldn't even watch that part of the video. Makes me instantly panic and sick!
I didn’t like the lungs part
@@abimaellopezmaylord27lopez7 OR the various forms of impaling.
The Witch dunker was especially grim,People are the worst to people.
That’s a very interesting museum Jake! Hope you have a Happy New Year and stay safe! 😊😊
okay but can we talk about how awfully graphic these are? Especially for back then in the 1800s..like- imagine doing that to someone and then going to church afterwards thinking because you go to church you're going to heaven LMAO
Whenever I remember this part of history I'm also reminded of how lucky I am to be born nowadays, when quite a few of these instruments have been transformed and are now used for cure or to make life easier instead of simply inflicting pain. One example is the mouth pear, the ancestor of the gynecological speculum which even though it may be a little uncomfortable, is essencial to prevent deadly diseases like cervical cancer by catching and treating lesions early.
Sheesh, this place was intriguing and disturbing.
I'm a huge fan of history and looking at these medieval torture stuff in this museum is both unsettling and interesting to look at! Also happy new year! Jacob stay safe and stay awesome
I used to live in Chicago, and I passed this museum while visiting last week, and I wanted to go so bad so THANK YOU for making a tour
Who’s here in 2024
Me dude
They had a small version of this at a renaissance festival I went to once. Walking through it, I started having a panic attack. I wanted to see if I could stomach your video and I was able to. Thanks for bringing the humor!
I’ve been wanting to visit this place so thanks for giving us a glimpse of how it looks inside.
WoW that was actually crazy !!! Thanks so much for sticking through it and sharing it with us !!! I just loved you narration and comments !! It made it bearable !!!
Well…watching this after my surgery, I can definitely say it wasn’t as bad as all these torture devices 🤣 this was very interesting though!
This is the type of museum that I'd actually be interested in going to
Very very horrfying museum of torture and gosh the wax figures looks so real!
This is terrifying to think that people both criminals and the innocent went through this horror!!
Great video as always, we love dark museums like this. Keep well and have a great New Year.
Do you have to be 18 or over to enter this museum? It's weird living in a society where sex education is more controversial than torture.
This is history. History is always important. Confusing kids about their gender is not.
Always happy to watch a carpetbagger video!
Great job! Thanks for the tour and the amazing commentary
Thank you, Jacob, this was really cool, I'm retired from the funeral business, and things like this have always fascinated me. I love your channel.
I was worried this was a set up, so glad you got out of there with all your parts. Have a amazing 2022 Jacob!
I have to say that this was bizarre and stomach churning but I couldn’t look away. Very interesting but I may have nightmares tonight.
A great insight into the terrible world of torture 😔 A Well created museum indeed 😊
I have a small oddity museum under my ice cream shop. Nice to hear of another ice cream shop museum combo. Lol
Absolutely love your videos really made me chase my dream of going to as many museums I can and actually just went to this one this year keep up the great content
Thanks you always have great stuff to watch appreciate your hard work 😊
I had no idea this museum existed. I think I am going to go over the weekend to check it out (I live in Chicago). Thanks for sharing!
Yep I was walking in the Loop one day a long time ago and boom there it was on State street right by the Chicago theater. I was like where did that come from
Wow what a cool spot ,thanks for sharing Jacob
I never knew Chicago had this. I live in Milwaukee and have visited Chicago many times. I went to the Medieval Torture Museum when I was in Amsterdam. It was kind of small and was only 5 Euro's. It was pretty creepy. I didn't know that Torture Museums were like a worldwide thing. Lol
Yep I was walking in the Loop one day a long time ago and boom there it was on State street right by the Chicago theater. I was like where did that come from
There used to be a torture museum in Atlantic City, NJ in the '70s
The fact that most of these punishments, came from the religious sector, honestly makes me believe there is no god. Just men using "god" as a means for keeping the masses in line.
Been to the one in St Augustine I enjoyed it. Glad to see they are expanding
Excellent video as always! Definitely cheered me up whilst isolating 😍 we have similar museums here in the UK, the York Dungeons is not too far from where I live and it’s absolutely fantastic, so much history in that city!
Wow. Thanks for this tour. I think we’re going to go this weekend.
I really enjoyed this video! :) I want to visit Chicago now. Thanks!
Lived in Chicago all my life and had no idea this museum existed. Definitely gonna check it out!
"Unfortunately" Jake, that was another great video. Thanks buddy!
love your videos and happy new year!
First exhibit and I was already about to sell out my grandma. Great video!
Thanks for showing this. Definitely gives me some ideas
Dang dude, last time I watched you was like 6-7 years ago. I kept trying to think of your name but thanks to CZcams, I have now found you.
On the womans bathroom a chastity belt! On the mens "whatever that is" (also chastity belt) XD
Thank you for the tour.
Big fan of your channel! Love the content!
Happy New Year Jacob!! I received an enamel pin for Christmas this year; so cool!! 🎉
i live in Illinois, glad to see you here jacob!
Hey , I glad to know that they have that in Chicago. I will be checking it out. I have a large pig figure smoker similar to that bull.
This channel is how I travel. Watching stuff on my couch never leaving my border
Very interesting! Thank you!
That bathroom was sparking clean! Oh! And the exhibits were great also. :)
I'm at a lost of words with these devices, but you sir are hilarious!!!
amazing stuff jacob
I hope and dream to be like you. Once I retire just travel the country and go to funky places like these
keep up the great videos
I was in Chicago yesterday and I'm so pissed I found this after I left. Ugggggg
I like that it's a "Medieval" torture museum but has wax models dressed like it's the 17th and 18th centuries and one guy clearly from the 20th century. The medieval era ended in like the 15th century (not like there's on exact date and time it ended, but generally it's accepted that Medieval became Renaissance in the 1400s)
It's funny because weren't most torture devices invented during the renaissance era? I know the guillotine didn't even come until the industrial era.
The wax figure in the red shirt at 5:49 looks like Rasputin, and is dressed like him too. And he was born in 1869 which is definitely not medieval times.
I love the carpet baggers visits.
Such an interesting place! Loved the vid
*Happy New Year!*
Your commentary makes it so much funnier 🤣
That was so interesting and Frightening at the same time
Omg I would love to visit this place. It looks so cool and interactive!
Carpetbagger that was very interesting to say the least. Holy hell.
I've been watching your videos for many years. You just keep getting better. Keep up the great work!
I love that we can deal with most of the torture devices, but the nail torture? Yeah no 😂
the actor Tommy Flanagan actually has a glasgow smile from back in the day when he was a dj at one point and when leaving the club was attacked by a gang leaving him with the scar
Plus it's also known widely as the joker (from batman) smile .. several versions of Jeremiah aka the joker (esp the Gotham tv version) had this and he even practiced it himself on his followers and foes .. apparently too it was said the screams from the victims ripped the smile wider as was done when they were awake and strapped down 😰😢
On Sons of Anarchy, the actor Tommy Flanagan who plays Filip "Chibs" Telford has a genuine Glasgow Smile. He was walking home after a DJ gig in his homeland Scotland when he was attacked by a group.
Love the commentary
you went to chicago and didn't get shot?! boy better a lottery ticket because he is lucky!
Ok medieval torture museum! Why do I have a smile on my face?
You make eveything interesting.
thats interesting haha! might go there for my holiday! thanks for sharing!
Loved this. With humor
Have a Happy birthday!!
The chastity belts on the bathroom door made me laugh
This one is better than any rollercoaster ride eh?
Great video!
I been to chicago in 2017. Sweet medieval museum
nice camera upgrade. looks really good.
surprisingly didn't hear no gunshots during this video chicago must be to cold for crime right now
I swear you're following me around - I was at Free Play Florida with some friends and I spotted you there playing an arcade game. Then I was in Chicago for the holidays LOL
Can’t believe you were so close to me! I was just in Chicago!
Fun fact: when prisoners were in line for the gilliatine (I can’t spell it💀💀) they would fight to be first in line, because the blade would get duller and duller each time and you wouldn’t die with one clean cut
Yeah calling it a "fun" fact is a bit of a misnomer 😅

I love how this is a cozy little neighbor to the Chicago Theater and a Chic Fil A
Yep I was walking in the Loop one day a long time ago and boom there it was on State street right by the Chicago theater. I was like where did that come from
Better eat at chic fila BEFORE you come here 😂

On that cheery note, Happy New Year!
