Anybody? Me, Neither... *Stands up and applaudes Will Self* A living testament to the phrase "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit".
BlibBlabBlob yes I know!! when I said "he needs to expand his vocabulary" I was being SARCASTIC. Do you understand what sarcasm is? I'm trying to expand YOUR vocabulary, and your mind.
I agree entirely. I love the english language and don`t want it to die out or diminish because the average person can`t be bothered to widen their vocabulary and use such wonderful colorful words!
Just think about it though - there are about 36,000 people who've seen the video. Presumably all in the UK. At least a quarter of them will forget (and I, like many other people I'm sure, have watched this quite a few times) so, call it 20,000 people who could potentially 'get' it. It'd be a great way to meet people worth speaking to, anyway. Oh, and if you actually do do this, print me one too!
any cell phone can be tapped at any time by the agencies...thats why we have accepted cell phones so readily, tapping and publishing is a smoke screen to this fact..people believe what they want to believe and its usually what they are told or read,i personally like and respect will self -his books are a bit nuts and so is he,but he keeps it real-hes not brain washed.
I don't think Will should dumb himself down, not that he would no matter what anyone thought, but sometimes in cases like this, it seems like he's using those kinds of words and phrases for the sole purpose of confusing and slightly alienating people. he doesn't need to 'dumb down', but if his vocabulary is so wide, i'm sure he can think of many more words to use, that include everyone in the understanding of his point.
Perhaps he sees it as having use in a promotion of the government and their current deployment of troops and not a symbol of remembrance, seeing as they become part of the uniform of politicians. Perhaps he sees it as not illustrating a needless waste of lives and horror of war but national pride in the fortunate outcome paid for by those that were in many cases wasted and sacrificed by politicians.
Why did he use 'epiphenomenal' when he did? He makes so many good points, but he ruins it all by trying to impress. Being a big Will Self fan, this happens at least once an interview, and it's very annoying...
It is very different than someone making reference to 16th century English and works of fiction. The man is a writer how far would he get if he could not represent his opinions through a considerably varied vocabulary. I would not pay to read "durrrrrr, you know what I mean" 50 times in any article. How would you like to read a piece by Joe Bloggs, a proper talker who used "errrrm" instead of a full stop.
his sesquipedalianism is impressive, but he is basically shining the dazzling light of his intellect into the deepest recesses of his rectum - all he says is to repeat the statement that we are all to blame in a dozen different ways in self-pleased lugubrious tones. And while he may know a lot of big words, he doesn't know how to pronounce them (it's pronounced imbrolyo not imbrogleeo)
When working in a team of people, using long or obscure language leads to a bad working environment. Colleagues either have to chalenge what you say to explain, which can be an embarrassing thing for someone to do or they say nothing and cultivate and nurture a resentment against you. I'm trying to find Will Selfs explanation for refusing to wear a poppy and help would be appreciated :)
language is a means to do a lot of things and scales of comprehension are of little value over a mass audience media like tv when anyone can be watching. When conveying the idea of rocket science it is inappropriate to consider reader comprehension over the reality of the information required. Who said that language use has to be easy. Affair is in no way more apt here, it doesn't convey the complication of involvement on many levels..
With due respect to Will Self, yes the people have been weak over tabloids. But there was a time when the tabloids were not what they have now become. And that shift happened well *before* the current "tectonic" one -- assuming there even is a real tectonic one now. Sure, I devoutly wish the public would say no to the red tops. But Murdoch used them to corrupt. The job was all too easy, but that doesn't change the fact of who really profited from the corruption, and at whose expense.
I thought people were just being stupid and perhaps over-exaggerating his pretentious vocab usage but I literally heard several words (or combination of) for the first time here. Imbroglio, epiphenomenal, prurience... and lastly "demagogic faux egalitarianism". Sadly he threw away any earned respect by saying QED. Even Steve Coogan threw in damascene conversion in order to impress.
whilst being embroiled in an eponymous charge towards faux egalitarian ideology led by demigogic principles. Let's not go onto the prurience err I mean jurisprudence of it.
OOMG musmnet vs. Will Self. No wonder Boyd is wearing the safety goggles. I also love how Boyd tries to up his game to Selfishness but doesn't really cut the mustard. Coogan makes the best point though: there's investigative titillation (think telephoto boob shots) ... and then there's vicious exploitation (phone hacking).
I blame postmodernism - back in the day, publications like the Sun were just known has the gutter press. But then smart arse cultural relativists came along and claimed terms like gutter press were elitist. So red tops, advertising, pornography, talent contests, soap operas, celebrity culture and a slew of other such worthless tack got a makeover. Such conceited but shrewd hucksters has Rebecca Brooks milked this ironic, post-modern cow for all it was worth.
wuo
this whole imbroglio is epiphenomenal
Could you spell both without a spellchecker?
yes i could it was easy
I heard those words and had to scroll down thinking "someone else must have thought WTF at the same time!"
Exactly what I thought.
TITTLE-TATTLE
Will Self may come across as a bit smug, but he is always interesting and entertaining to watch.
"rat-like feral persona." so good.
Will Self's dead-pan delivery of obscure lexical terminology is RUDDY HILARIOUS!!! Remember the 'Dictionary' episode of Blackadder?
Anybody? Me, Neither... *Stands up and applaudes Will Self* A living testament to the phrase "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit".
The way Coogan looks at him when 'our Will' comes out with it is also epiphenonemenal
yeah the british love gossip, I like Will Self
"You can have a free press, so long as it's properly regulated".
'Imbroglio is epiphenomenal', sat next to Allen Partridge, fantastic, what does it mean?
Thought he said Natalie Imbruglia is bangable
Will Self has a wonderful way with words.
natalie imbroglio?
Alot of people just don't get him. It's a very unique humour not everyone appreciates, i think he's awesome though.
ironically the people who dont get him are the same people who lap up the shit from the british tabloid press
Will Self really needs to expand his vocabulary
+Danny Boy the fuck are you talking about?1 He uses SO many big words!!!
BlibBlabBlob it's called sarcasm? I was being sarcastic.........that's what the fuck I was talking about
But he knows so many words? Like he's pretty well famous for using big words.
BlibBlabBlob yes I know!! when I said "he needs to expand his vocabulary" I was being SARCASTIC. Do you understand what sarcasm is? I'm trying to expand YOUR vocabulary, and your mind.
So, hang on. You KNOW he's famous for having a big vocabulary, yet think he still needs to expand it EVEN FURTHER...?
I agree entirely. I love the english language and don`t want it to die out or diminish because the average person can`t be bothered to widen their vocabulary and use such wonderful colorful words!
Will Self is a legend.
Is it odd that I'm laughing my arse off at how amazing Will Self's vocabulary is?
_"This whole imbroglio is epiphenomenal"_ lol c'mon Will... *try* to rein in that mush of yours, mate XD
You are also forgetting the daily express.
Will Self always dazzles me with his wordy intellectualism.
Perhaps you don't know people who speak like this, but they exist, and Will Self is one of them.
I know that. It's just the distracted way he phrases his thoughts that makes it seem that way.
As usual Will hits the nail on the head!
Oh Will Self. Get your own show on youtube or something because you are so much better than pretty much everyone else, even when I disagree with you!
this is worth coming on youtube by itself
epiphenomenal awsome look at coogan, loving the self
perhaps he was saying something of interest but who could tell when he was resolved to "errr you know what I mean".
Just think about it though - there are about 36,000 people who've seen the video. Presumably all in the UK. At least a quarter of them will forget (and I, like many other people I'm sure, have watched this quite a few times) so, call it 20,000 people who could potentially 'get' it.

i thought this was about the queen album.

In all seriousness, i'll buy one.
i know. i love will self.:) he loves to give everyone in the room a "i need my dictionary" moment.
he's got the words written on the palms of his hands. check 0:46

Reading an upside-down dictionary whilst glancing at a thesaurus with non-prescription issue spectacles is ill-advised.
Why did he use 'epiphenomenal' when he did? He makes so many good points, but he ruins it all by trying to impress. Being a big Will Self fan, this happens at least once an interview, and it's very annoying...
Isn't the bold guy the same guy who appeared on channel 4's the 40 year old virgin?
Your capriciousness utterly confounds me.
you can't summon up tumescence like room-service.
"This whole imbroglio is epiphenomenal". Wow. Just fucking wow.
TheMangoDeluxe I know! Big words!
Shame he can't actually pronounce half the big words he loves to bandy about.
This whole imbroglio is epiphenomenal... Yes exactly what i was thinking........
Will Self brilliant as always...
Will's always spot on. Pity no one can understand what the fuck he's on about.
I got failed on a paper for using words the examiner didn't understand. I wish Will Self had been there.
@alanthe2 because Ernest Moss always advises it :)
Speculators in action.
Any man who speaks Latin and references Dorian Gray on newsnight can have me as a fan.
This whole imbroglio is epiphenomenal.
I think I'd vote for Will Self. Though admittedly it'd be well after the election until I fucking understood what he was saying.
Where do I go to learn how to speak like Will Self?
Read

he doesn't link them except to use them as two examples of things tabloids love to campaign for
Why is he wearing safety goggles?
soon as he said it I pissed myself laughing
his sesquipedalianism is impressive, but he is basically shining the dazzling light of his intellect into the deepest recesses of his rectum - all he says is to repeat the statement that we are all to blame in a dozen different ways in self-pleased lugubrious tones. will self what an andapt name
It's very easy for you to say that!
I'll buy one X-Large please

I am certain Will Self will have a laught at the *absolutely crap* opening ceremony that we are shortly to be entertained with.
Natalie Imbruglia is an epileptic? That's all very well Will but is it in the public interrest?
at 00:5 - Will looks asleep from that angle!
search for Maitlis and haunted for a giggle
but what's the good of a language if you can't make yourself understood?

You own nothing. Will Self owns everything.

@mitchurchin2 Unfortunately, yes.
Lovely stuff
fucking love will self, bet the rest of the panel didnt have a fucking clue what he was saying hahahaha!
Don't forget the sun
@englishlion2988 Well, look em up & grow your vocabulary! Must confess there were a few that had me guessing.
Is self a famous writer or person or even a personality. Is he unhappy with BT,is he waiting for a phone instillation.Dont know!
Will Self blames the people, I blame the people for giving this nobody a career
agreed
Did the BBC Health & Safety Nazis make him wear the goggles?
I think I agree with Will Self - but I need to get my dictionary first!
Hilariously, I think he is doing a "Self", trying to impress................ but failing miserably!
Epiphenomenal!
@jakers818833 GOLD ;) "wordy shitflaps" needs to be in a thesaurus now!
Will Self and Boris Johnson for Biminister.
I really couldn't give a shit about this story.
His vocabulary is sublime. I had to look up 'paedo-bashing' though.
He mispronounces imbroglio, though!
I blame the demagogic faux egalitarianism
Quondam: that once was, belonging to some prior time, e.g. NOTW
And Scousers never buy the Sun.
"symptomatic of a kind of weird, demagogic faux-egalitarianism." champion
Is english your second lnguage?
He mispronounced imbroglio

Will Self !!!
@ChocolateExplosion
No. It's far worse, it's pro troops...
I like Will Self, but there is such a thing as using long words to look brainy.
hacking will never be history... software ordware
Help the Heroes is a paedo-bashing campaign?! News to me! :D
In all seriousness, it seems a bit strange to link the two.
just say it like it is! it went tits up!
