PLEASE NOTE: This tutorial only works for the Conscientous Objector! For the other decalable items, replace the filename paper_overlay.png with:
flair: flair_template_guide.png

I tried to decal my Photo Badge, and I triple checked everything yet the brown hue is still present.

also make sure u look at the properties of the picture u have used to make sure its pixels are 128 by 128 pixels.

Yeah, the file name need to be only "paper_overlay" if you have "Hide extensions for known file types" checked (which is on by default). If it's unchecked, the name has to have the ".png" at the end.

what happened with me is i didnt propperly resize the image to 128 by 128 pixels, make sure to double check when doing that step

Visit befunky on google chrome, resize photo here. Unclick ratio aspect and make it 128x128 after doing it. Now it should work if its called properly. I just did that and made some 21st century humor meme with that bald guy saying "you take some chocolate and some lobster...
Works like a charm, even in 2021.
To anyone reading this feeling like you're in the Twilight Zone with the overwhelming positive feedback, don't be scared, just follow this almost to a T.
Make sure it's a PNG.
Make sure you create all the folders as needed.
Make sure you name it "paper_overlay", however. Adding the ".png" does not work for some people.
Also make sure TF2 is CLOSED during all of this.

I'd like to say that this also works if you want to put your image on the item FLAIR! but you have to name your photo '"flair_template_guide"
Same directory but the name changes. To get it as full colored you will also have to use the in game color modificator (the left arrow) and there you go! full colored flair!
yooo i finally got this to work thank you so much!!! for anyone that is also having trouble, double check that the image you put inside custom_texture_blend_layers is the 128x128 png file. i had the original picture inside there which was 601x601 and a jpg file.

attempting this in 2022. was having a hard time getting it to work even though i was following instructions correctly. i fixed it by creating a separate folder in tf/custom specifically for the files. even if you already have a userstuff folder, just make another folder in the same directory and use that exclusively for your decal file subfolders (i.e tf/custom/userstuff2/scripts/items/custom_texture_blend_layers). assuming that it was my pre-existing custom files causing issues, but result was worth the headache

just did it and I can confirm it does work. you just have to make sure that you did everyone EXACTLY correct. I made the mistake is naming my scripts folder “script” instead of “scripts” and I spent 30 minutes wondering what the hell I did wrong and why it wasn’t working. make sure you do EVERYTHING the right way or it won’t work.
Years later, your comment helped me out! I somehow made the exact same mistake and didn't notice it, I struggled for a really long time, couldn't get it to work, was desperately looking through any relevant videos and comment sections, saw your comment, checked my files just in case and sure enough, my folder was named "script". Fixed it and it immediately worked!

I followed the steps, creating the folders that needed to be created, named the image paper_overlay.png, used the decal tool, but after selecting the image, it wasnt colored, it was using the shades provided by the game

Quick question, how would you go about putting different images on different objectors? You can't have two files with the same name in one folder.
ik this is late, but after you make the sign it doesnt matter. You can just replace the image with whatever decal youre trying to apply now

Save to following file types for items:
Conscientous Objector: paper_overlay
flair: flair_template_guide
clan pride: Clan_Pride_Overlay

BE SURE NOT TO USE FILE EXTENSION >PNG< OR IT WILL HAVE COLOR HUES ADDED!!!!
Then browse to that location when applying spray with decal tool, Done.

@@planetoftheweek windows by default hides file extensions. It is a period followed by a few letters or numbers at the end of the file name. To enable viewing them, you need to change your view settings so they are not hidden. If you use windows 10, everything is hidden, thus perpetuating computer illiteracy. The file extensions are what are used to identify what program is associated with the file and what type of file it is. I refuse to use win10, so I don't know how to change your view settings for windows explorer. ( not to be confused with windows internet explorer ).. Might do a CZcams search for it and see what you learn.
@@BingChillin_ow you can open it by renaming it with the file extension which it is. If you leave the extension there, then it won't apply the colors you want. Microsoft in their infinite stupidity hides file extensions so people guess what the file is by the icon it has, which coincidentally changes every time it is associated with a different program. I can name a file .mp4 from .mp3, and it will open with a video player program, but still play like a mp3 audio file with no picture. Blah blah.. The instructions should work if you follow them.
