What Would Happen if Apophis Hit the Earth

  • Apophis is a near Earth asteroid with a diameter of 270 metres. In this simulation the aseroid first hits and then sends fragments from the collision back into space which orbited the Earth for a short period of time before coming back to Earth. Apophis is a near Earth asteroid but it has a very low chance of actually hitting the Earth in real life

This would be a major city or even small state killer if it hit land but if it hit the pacific then damage would be significantly less. This isn't at all what would happen. Apophis is about 0.185 km in radius while in orbit, the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs Chicxulub was about 10 km in radius on impact and even that didn't wipe out all life. Chances are once it impacted it would be considerably smaller, reach terminal impact and just explode with a mushroom cloud similar to a nuke. Assuming it hit land which, their's about a 71% chance it won't, and even assuming it doesn't hit a large uninhabited area, say a desert or Antarctica.

    • @groudon9099
      @groudon9099 Před 6 lety +70

      And? It's still gonna burn a good amount in the atmosphere and then blow up. It doesn't matter how fast it's going, the energy it has with it is greater than the energy holding it together, so it's gonna explode on impact the same size whether it's going 33,000 mph or 44,000 mph and again, this thing is small compared to Chicxulub which was roughly 10 km across and even then it didn't destroy all life on Earth like some people think Apophis will.

    • @puncheex2
      @puncheex2 Před 5 lety +22

      According to Wikipedia, Apophis tips at an estimated 63e9 kg, or 63 million metric tonnes. It would land with a release of 740 Mtonnes, TNT equivalent. That's about 15x the Czar Bomba, about 1/400th off the Chicxulub meteor, about 75x the Barringer Crater meteor.

    In my opinion, Apophis wouldn’t make that much intense damage. First, while entering the atmosphere, it would become white hot like any asteroid, and even if all of it’s mass doesn’t burn up, it will lose a significant amount of mass, so when it hits Earth, the shockwave would be huge, yes, but it won’t cause extreme damage as it lost alot of it’s mass.

We're talking dust in the atmosphere for YEARS, possible that it can cause a chain reaction as well, setting off other natural disasters. Just the food shortage alone would kill MILLIONS of people. Then you have to contend with disease, looting, riots, civil unrest on a unprecedented scale, in a time where political and social tensions are already at an all time high.
      Then we have lovely things like prophecy, that foretold of this thousands of years ago. OH, and then we have NASA naming this ungodly thing Apophis... which is a god of destruction... OH, and then we have it's associated number...
      99942, what is 999 inverted? Okay, that's weird right? But what about the number 42? Well... what does the bible say about it?
      "The Meaning of Numbers: The Number 42
      Forty-two is a number with a direct connection to the coming Antichrist. His evil efforts will last 42 months in the end time, and thus forty-two is firmly associated with him.
      Then the angel gave me a measuring rod like a staff, saying, "Arise and measure the temple of God, and the altar . . . and they shall trample upon the holy city for forty-two months" (Revelation 11:1 - 2)
      Revelation 13 states that the end time Beast power will be so powerful that no one will be able to make war with him. He will speak great boastful things and be given the authority to do so for 42 months (Revelation 13:4 - 5). Forty-two is made up of 6 and 7, showing a link between mankind and God's spirit and a link between the Antichrist and Jesus Christ."

The impact of the apophis would be so hot, that rock would be vaporised into gas by impact, due to the kinetic energy. The ozone layer would be destroyed, kicking ozone out to outer space. If the gas wave hits the city, almost all buildings would collapse, but with humans, humans would explode due to intense high pressure.
