Comparing Yo-Kai to Pokemon is like comparing Pokemon to Digimon. They are all completely different games.

If you ask me... Yo-Kai Watch is going to have the same problems that Digimon has. (I mean you probably wouldn't count this but accessibility reach is likely why it didn't feel as inviting. Pokemon has it so anyone can train their pocket monsters while Digimon has only those who are chosen to befriend a Digimon [which kind of got called on in one of the season 2 episodes at the earliest] and Yo-Kai watch has it that only those that are armed with the watch can see Yo-kai.) I do see potential but this game standing up to defeat Pokemon...it's going to need to level up. And probably higher than level 5.

While both were in development at the same time, the Digimon anime was made to compete against Pokemon, and the games were meant to compete with the Pokemon games. What matters is intent, not execution.
Yo-Kai Watch isn't meant to compete with Pokemon.
+Mirage Gaocariomon My thoughts exactly. I don't really see the whole "Pokémon Killer" coming through. This game is pretty different from Pokémon, only sharing similarities at the base. Even if this becomes a huge hit, there's no reason as to why Pokémon and Yokai Watch couldn't coexist, each with their own fanbase.
As someone who have played and beat all the games already, yes, they are very different from Pokémon games. And that's honestly a good thing. Because we already have Pokémon.

If they made a game which uses the function. Not sure if Yokai Watch 3 will get something like that. The games already uses AR codes so you can scan in Yokai medals or codes from magazines to get rare capsule coins or items. They've been selling those little medals forever in Japan. Each little blind bag contains a random medal and there's a lot of series out there already. I wonder if the English version even kept that.

It's a really good game, but it's no 'Pokemon killer" apparently. Of course not, Pokemon has too much of a legacy anyway.
***** Japan is the same market that buys the most mobile games in the world. I don't really care if it's killing there, that's one country. Pokemon was a worldwide phenomenon.
Pokemon was a perfect storm with everything coming out at the same time. Yokai Watch sounded like it was trying to be that.

I haven't played the Yo-Kai watch games yet but I still think they're worth trying. Level 5 makes some pretty enjoyable games, whether it's Fantasy Life, Ni No Kuni, or Professor Layton.
One thing I'll note is to wait for the toys to come out, as the physical Yo-kai Medals will include QR codes you can scan into the game to get coins that you can you with the Yo-kai Gacha Machine in the forest to potentially get new and even rare Yo-kai. These coins can also be obtained through regular gameplay upon completing quests or even found randomly
The demo won me over, looking forward to playing the full game! Nice review Derrick :)
I really wished Yo-Kai Watch Season 2 and 3 are finally released onto complete DVD collection at last because I already got the first season on DVD collection with 26 episodes and no news of Season 2 and 3 of being released for years.

The way you befriend Yokai sounds like when you befriend demons in SMT (especifically IV for this case) only more annoying, since you can only try it once.
As for this game being a big Pokemon like phenomenon? Nah, that will likely not happen.

@@Clawnyan Fast forward to now, the "rumors" of Level-5 Abby shutting down had long been confirmed. However, Level-5 did recently mention that they'll start doing their translations in-house.

The way you "Catch" the Yokai reminds me more of SMT than Pokémon.

You can fuse together the yo-kai (Which are based on real culture)? That's like straight out of Shin Megami Tensei, why are people comparing this to Pokemon?

Plus the one that whine and say its a pokemon clone I view them as nothing but troll that just want to say stuff. since thats all their is similer another got to catch them all kind of game but their been ALOT of those even before pokemon you have tamagachi that was Pokemon before pokemon....well i think it came before pokemon.
zerokura Dragon Quest V was one too. But this just screams SMT, or more specifically DemiKids (A kiddie spin-off of SMT) Which also has 3 party members in combat at a time, fusions, and just like every SMT, monsters based on mythology. It was also easier and modern SMT games have a catch 'em all reward of some kind such as in Nocturne were you get a mode were you play it as an old-school first person dungeon crawler like the previous ones.. Honestly the reward is better than the diplomas from Pokemon. It just baffles me how people even see Pokemon from this.

It's mostly because Pokémon has seen a slight decrease in sales and advertising due to Yokai Watch. Not enough to get anywhere close to toppling the franchise, but enough to concern The Pokémon Company. Essentially, Yokai Watch is the Twitch to Pokemon's CZcams.
You get a warp "Mirror" about 15 hours in that let's you warp basically anywhere on the huge map, which is helpful. Also, in line with "this isn't a Pokemon game", obtaining Yokai feels very rewarding simply because it's not sure-fire that they'll befriend you. It just feels like you worked for it, which is cool. I'm totally hooked on this game, I think it's great. The auto battles are really fun because they make me think of strategies on my feet as opposed to turn based pauses, and it reiterates the fact that I don't control these creatures inherently. I'm only a companion or a leader to them. My ONLY issue is the tedious map (which gets solved with the warp mirror), and the pacing of the watch upgrades. It feels very fast, which is strange because this game is like 30+ hours. I'm only 17 hours in and I'm already working twords the A Rank Watch. Ranks go up from E, D, C, B, A, to S.
i SHOULD point out that dericks problem with back tracking is largly fixed in the game with mirapo (the mirror yokai)s abillity of fast travel
Thanks for livestreaming this as well Derrick! I pre-ordered this on a whim, and I'm glad I did now. I am quite saddened to hear that co-op is Local only. We all know this model works in Japan, but where we are all more scattered in the US, adding WiFi might have been smart- but sequels might do this. Also, befriending Yokai seems like it could be frustrating, this game has enough good elements for me to forgive that. It honestly reminds me of if Monster Rancher and Dragon Quest Monsters had a cool kid. More Dragon Quest Monsters, but I guess the whole disk-based Yokai capsule thing and the Fusion reminds me a bit of Monster Rancher fondly. :D

I'm still in the tutorial stages of the game, but I find it decent. It's not Pokemon (you have control over EVERYTHING in that game), but here, it seems like you are just the guide for your Yokai.
I love how Japanese the game feels (even Jibanyan is a reference to an specific type of oni)...
Lol I remember when people used to compare this to Pokemon lol, honestly its more like Shin Megami Tensei because in SMT you can befriend demons and use them in battle and fuse them to make stronger demons which is really similar to youkai watch. Also Shin Megami Tensei is waaaaay older than Yokai Watch, so if any thing Yokai watch is kind if just kind of a kid friendly SMT.
Hm... but that looks nothing like Pokémon... Rather, it feels like something from the Shin Megami Tensei series, with that funny art and animation from the likes of Dragon Quest and Inazuma Eleven

I played the demo. I am definitely interested but a bit overwhelmed with how much is going on the bottom screen. I wanted to watch the action but was too busy with the mini games in battle. Took me a second to realize they attack on their own.
I don't mind the 'random' joining so much as it reminds me a lot of Dragon Quest Monsters for Gameboy. It was very much like that where you kinda had to 'grind' to get allies, but battles tended to be quick. Not sure how fast battles are in this, so that could be a problem. I do intend to play this. It seems very much like DQM but even more goofy.

I love Level-5! Yet another great game! Level-5 and Square Enix make some of the best handheld games.
The reason it was so hard to recruit Yo-kai might be because of that Casanono in your group, he makes it harder to recruit Yo-kai.
Now I haven't played Yo-Kai watch, but I wish the Pokemon world would adopt some of this games supposed charm. Now don't hate on me, I was always and will always love Pokemon, but the world seems stale. Yes these are two completely different games, but that doesn't mean they can't inspire or improve each other.
All I know about Yo-kai I learned from Dual Destinies.

Btw Derrick, you might have had more trouble than you bargained for when trying to obtain yo-kai with Casanono in your team, because his unpopularity skill reduces the likelihood of a yo-kai wanting to befriend you
See a lot of similar resources to Fantasy Life and Inazuma Eleven here which pleases me, shame though that for a change Europe aren't getting it before America lol gonna have to wait a bit until next year.

+Stelios78910 If it helps, the release of the game (and the anime and toys) got pushed forward to December in Australia and New Zealand, so you could import if you don't want to wait. We're effectively the same region.
Good review. I tried out the demo, and while I didn't enjoy it, I can see a lot of potential for it go grow as a franchise. My personal problem came from the battle system. I just couldn't get into the hands off way they were run, and the interactions you could have didn't reel me in.
With any luck, the game will manage well enough over here.
I own the entire Professor Layton series, Inazuma Eleven, LBX and have this on pre order, i think i sold my soul to these guys.
Originally put it off due to it looking too "childish" but after being sucked in by monster hunter stories, my inner kid has come back out to play, this looks awesome.
I mean the MC Is a child so I guess it'd have to be at least a bit childish

to be honest, the second game is much better but won't come here in quite a while
*For me:*
Pros:
1. Decent graphics for the overworld/city/characters. (For a 3DS game that is)
*Nothing else.*
Cons:
1. Comedian/Silly. (i.e. No seriousness whatsoever in terms of characters or story)
2. Extremely childish.
3. Non-competitive.
4. Battles are mostly random/luck-based. (i.e. little control over the flow of battle)
5. Catching "Yo-Kai" is random/luck-based and very tedious as well.
6. Poor story.
7. Horrible Yo-Kai designs.
(Keep in mind that this is how "I" see it. If you have an opposite view, then good for you and I hope you enjoy it, but this game is NOT meant for someone like me at all).

Jared Knight This game is *over-doing it* in terms of comedian moments/dialogues. Personally, while I don't mind a single comedian moment/dialogue once in awhile, I most certainly do NOT prefer a game that is just filled with comedy left and right.
I personally prefer a more SERIOUS style of story-telling (like KILLING EVERYTHING like in Pokémon X/Y or DESTROYING THE WHOLE UNIVERSE like in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl) as well as SERIOUS/BADASS characters (not silly/comedian/boring characters).
I can totally understand and respect if you don't mind a comedian game (we all have our own individual preferences after all), but for me? Seriousness/Badass/Intense story, characters & gameplay IS WHAT I MAINLY SEEK IN GAMES NOWADAYS not boring comedian characters/scenes/story that leave me looking like this "- _ -" all the time.

Japan already has a direct sequel to this game so maybe those (it does a Pokemon: Yokai Watch 2 actually consists of 3 titles) have fixed the issues present in this, the original game. I can't wait to get my paws on this one, personally.
It's true, Yo-Kai Watch is definitely not just a Pokemon Clone based on everything I've seen. That said, it starting with the player character catching bugs and finding a gachapon machine HAVE to be Pokemon homages (insect collecting and gachapon are both huge inspirations for Pokemon.)

This game might be a successful hit but it will fade out remember bakugon beyblade and digimon oh you don't, see?
Well in the causal sense of world popularity, yes Yo-Kai Watch might just be a fad for a while if it's successful. However Digimon and even Beyblade are still highly regarded series in their country of origin and the long time fans outside that said region, just not on the level of Pokemon. Honestly it would be nice to see if this will at least do well and it can gain a worldwide fanbase for years to come.

If only there were more things you could do to help you befriend them...

+Ruko Michiharu There are a couple of Yo-kai called Cupistol and Shmoopie who have an ability to make your Yo-kai "popular" and increase the likelihood of Yo-kai wanting to be friends with you, as well as foods in the same group that have varying levels of how much it will make the Yo-kai friendly towards you. A combination of those two elements makes it easier to befriend Yo-kai
+Ruko Michiharu well a pokemons natural habitat is being on a game card and they do not exist until the player spawns them by walking into tall grass. if you defeat or run from said pokemon it deletes everything that pokemon ever was.. essentially killing it. (unless a new pokemon with the exact same stats comes along but its still not the same one as it was spawned fresh) SO technically its move ethical by forcing them out of their natal habitat is giving them life and continuing it by being in storage.
at the end of the day, its just a game. you should try ninten'dogs.

A Yo-Kai (妖怪) is translated as a ghost or apparition. They probably didn't explain what a Yo-Kai was in the US version because the japanese version never did, because it was obvious to them.

I wouldn't say this is similar to Pokemon. I find it more like a Shin Megami Tensei game for kids. Since both involve trying to convince monsters to join your side and fusing monsters together to form new monsters.
I need some advice, i'm about to go on a long trip and I've been thinking about this game. I don't really care about the battle system, I want to just run around and notice details, also for the Japanese culture. It's either this or Monster Hunter 4 (for 3DS). Which one would be better? Also i'm a huge pokemon fan, but I know this isn't pokemon. One last thing, is it too childish? I don't know what someone would think if they saw me (almost 16 yr. old) playing this game.

People are quick to compare this to Pokémon, and they aren't wrong, but this game series has so much more stuff in it differing it from Pokémon that I think this game excels Pokémon by a longshot. That's just an opinion.

You know, this game doesn't seem half bad. Idk if I'll ever play it, but this surely gives me ideas about how Pokemon could really amp up the level of detail in their games. Also seeing how they could also have more immersive dialog and adventures to take on. It's 2015 Pokemon, and I think we all know 20 year olds play too. Yeah I know in the stream it took you until literally the last minute for a Yokai to join. Still seems interesting but that befreind rate needs to be upped.

I did some research on "Pokemon Omega Ruby" and bought it. I think the game is ok. However, I decided to give "Yo-Kai Watch"(which I just recently started to play)a try and I be honest, I am enjoying "Yo-Kai Watch" much more than "Pokemon Omega Ruby". I look forward to playing "Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters"(which I heard was the ultimate one to get out of the other 2 "Yo-Kai Watch 2" games)and "Yo-Kai Watch 3"(which I both already have purchased and waiting to play).

I'm glad Level 5 has another hit on their hands. I really like a lot of their games, but aside from the Professor Layton series, most of those games tend to go unnoticed, at least where I live (like White Knight Chronicles 1 and 2 and Ni no Kuni).

I'm intrigued by this game as a Pokemon fan. I keep hearing a lot of good things about this series. I'll probably check it out, but it's not out till next year in Europe...bummer.
Yo-Kai watch seems interesting. I might get the game if I see it and have nothing else in my mind on getting. But as a side note... at 7:56 Kappa wants fish? Why not cucumbers, isn't that what Kappas traditionally like? I am confuzzled.

Funny thing is, I have the same problems as you, yet I'm in love with the game. Maybe because I love Japan and Japanese culture, so the game just fascinates me
