Just started my guitar journey at 71, I know I will not be around for a long time, but I am so willing to give it a go, Thank you Mary.
A long time? You've got another 30 years in you my man! What did you do in the first 30 years of your life? Aim to do as much as that in your next 30!!
@@Sif3r Very gracious of you.
Good luck to you man! It's a difficult road but an enjoyable one :)
Age is just a number..
Keep at it and have fun
Awesome.
3:32 I love the casual dropping of "...and his wife" as a not so subtle "no, he's not my celebrity boyfriend"
You remind me of someone...Mary
HI Maryđ€© A few weeks back, I ran across you colab with Rick Beato on "Operator" (Which, incidentally, destroyed my macho image and left me sobbing like a baby in front of my computer). This led me to your "Last Train Home" video. Never in my life has a tune been so stuck in my head. Absolutely loved it!
I enjoyed the Q&A. Besides being a fantastic musician, your honesty and sincerity with everything you do is very refreshing. Cheers!
Mary is a real person. How refreshing.
đđžđ
She's a cartoon as well. Cartoons can do anything.
She's a hologram as well...
I thought she was a fembot. Mary spender please address this rumour.
Agreed

Quite impressed by your natural authority to the camera : you say "focus" and it obeys (4:07) đ
Hi Mary Spender, I like listening to you answering questions from us.
There have been times when I've practised more or practised less, but I've never considered quitting guitar. There are other instruments that are more classical or jazz oriented that I have drifted out of, but guitar lets me play the music I love the most, so I would never give it up. Thanks Mary, I really enjoyed this video.
Writing songâs & scripts is creative writing Mary, props to you on everything you create as a creative person.
I also wanted to just say thank you Mary, you are such a little ball of sunshine who brightens my day every day, whether that is motivating myself with your own motivation posts, one of your guitar or producing videos, I learn a lot as a complete guitar newbie4. And that british classiness just is the cherry on top for me.
Mary, you are a true inspiration. Rick Beato mentioned you and a few other friends on his channel yesterday and I just had to pop in - it's been too long. đ
What a lovely candid video Mary. Enjoy your language journey; it's as deep as music and your guitar - never ending and always a pleasure to learn.
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel, Mary. You are a â realâ, down to earth person. I look forward to follow and listen to more of your music and off-topic conversations âïžđđ
Mary, Your information is accurate, well delivered, and I find your channel very entertaining. Ive been playing guitar for 48 years and teaching for 26. I am here merely to help set your mind at ease, and encourage you to continue on you path. Btw... don't read too many fan comments! They can corrupt your spirit unnecessarily! Way too much of that on this planet!...Thank you for the courage and tenacity it took to establish you channel, brand, and YT audience! Bravo! I also love the fine appreciation by Rick Beato! You Rock!
A delightful woman. Talented, articulate, humble and self-deprecating. I love her channel.
Well played ! And yeah, would love to see more sights from your travels.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, Mary. They are very entertaining.
A regular, nice decent person who happens to be talented, gifted and have a sense of humor! How refreshing and engaging!
Wow you are not sociable are you? There's billions like her.
@@chrisking6695 She does stand in stark contrast to people such as yourself who seem to go about in the world with a chip on their shoulder looking for confrontation and criticizing others! Actually Iâm quit sociable and tend to like most people I interact with. The last part of my statement was meant with a bit of â tongue in cheekâ sarcasm such a pity you donât seem capable of understanding.
"me and the guitar are on a journey, and I'm never giving up"
Mary Spender - your words could have come from my very own heart. You just shot up a few rungs on my ladder of respect!
For real!
Defo..itâs all about enjoying what you/ we do...
That was so very enjoyable. How I admire your ability to set up a camera and speak to it without inhibition. Spain looks so warm and beautiful, thanks for letting me tag along.
That was fun, Mary. Hope you're enjoying yourself in Spain. Looks beautiful.
Any time I see you and Adam Neely are together in a video, I can feel an amazing friendship between you both!
I lost track of this channel until Sir Beato reminded me. Thanks Rick! And keep rocking Mary!!! Guitar is one instrument that should never be quitted. (quat?)
Very intriguing video session re: people's guesses & impressions about you. Candor mixed with self-deprecating humour, slightly on the dry side...I enjoy your output on this channel and I also respect completely your drive to do your own thing and "paddle your own canoe" as it were. Dig in, enjoy life!!
Glad to see you are in Spain , greetings from Madrid!
@4:06 camera's out of focus and Mary says focus about the recorder and it "snaps to" focus briefly.
I was wondering if anyone else noticed!
Loved the friendly and fun responses. Rick Beato on his recent video nailed it when he spoke about you.

You are sharing interesting information for the benefit of others and you do so with an open heart and mind .
You are an uplifting person, love your own songs. Hope I get to see you, Rena Del Cid, & Toni sometime in the near future!
this was fun Mary! you should do these like once a month
You come across as a intelligent well educated young lady with a nice personality, keep doing your thing and enjoy yourself.
Best wishes from an old guy who can't even play a comb !
I have to imagine a video like this is lots of fun to do, confirming or debunking what folks might think.
My next music project will be more vocal parts, and less loud electric guitar.
Much more like you have done, even though I am not blessed with the writing gene. (I am just a tavern band guitar player)
I find it way too easy to hide behind quads of 6L6's. Singing accompanied by Acoustic instruments is so much more from the heart.
Bravo Mary, you are a true inspiration. :)
Yea..liking the music and Rick is a big fan..â€ïžâ€ïž Enjoy the creative journey Mary.
Watched the first couple minutes at most (will continue after commenting). Wanted to say this right away. From the videos of yours that I've watched (found you because of Rick Beato's channel), I can only say this; You are a wonderfully talented singer, instrumentalist, song writer, and self promoter. Any musician with a brain would be thrilled to jam or colaborate with you. On a separate note you are absolutely charming, lovely, and a breath of fresh air (wish I was 25 years younger....Turning 60. LOL).
When I had a project studio in South Florida we were recording a song and used a quartet with people who played in local orchestras and did session work. In this case they quadrupled each instrument to give that BIG sound. So, we were waiting for the violist to arrive, but the two violinists and the cellist was there. One of the violinist talked about how he had switched to viola in the orchestra for a bit, thinking it would be nice to play the supporting role, but quickly discovered that the parts were not fun to play, too contained, and switched back.
Hi mary, just discovered you through chappers and andertons vids, you're a great musician and wear your heart on your sleeve, looking forward to watching more vids and ultimately your journey if you share that with us, keep on trucking mary.
Thank you Mary for sharing the journey you are on. Big into spotify at the moment and enjoying your material which is a change from metal.
Amazing how the camera came into focus when you said "focus" at 4:07.
A wow Mary Spender moment.
Your âSultans of Swingâ cover with Josh Turner was EL PERFECTO!! Thank you! I also appreciate your respect for the English language and attempt to use proper grammar. I share it. Language is at best a limited and somewhat poor vessel for conveying our thoughts and feelings. Taking the trouble to develop a good vocabulary and decent command of the language is critical to our ability to think, understand the world around us, and communicate our insights. It deserves respect. As an American, Iâm a bit unsure of the meaning of a âposhâ way of speaking. However, I am aware of the many radically different accents in Britain; some quite difficult to understand. Yours is very nice. Iâm from an old Tidewater Virginia family that predates our war for Independence. We have an accent here that still retains many flavors of old English so the way the Royals speak feels familiar to my ear. Linguistically I have no idea what that means except that perhaps being extremely traditional and somewhat cloistered from the general public they may have preserved a way of speaking from the times when England colonized America. English aside, I enjoy your music. Thank you. Good music is mana for the soul and making it is a worthy lifeâs endeavor. Well done!!
Here's another word for your vocabulary - manna. And I'm in agreement with all you said. Be well and Be Cool.
Great vid. Enjoyed hearing all the answers.
Thank you for share . Always happy. Nice videoâ€ïžđ
Venga MarĂa. Ănimo con el Castellano. Big âHey!â to everybody in Salamanca. If youâre near Alba de Tormes, come and jam!!
7:44 Imagining Mary play Rocky theme with full horn section
Really enjoyed this. Getting to know you more! Loved you before. Even more now. Appreciate you and your talent so much.
I like đ these kinds of videos where you speak to things as well as clarify or dispel misconceptions. đ
4:06 out of focus.
4:07 says "focus", back in focus.
Proof that Mary is super human!
Came here to make the same comment!
Bloody hell, Highbury Vaults brings back memories. Mostly slightly hazy ones frankly.
Mary, just have a great time in Spain and most importantly, be inspired by the place, so that you may write/compose beautiful songs. Cheers!đ»đ
Thanks Mary. I appreciate you sharing with me.
"you can only play blues and small acoustic songs"... And this is me remembering the video that brought me to your channel, learning a Mastadon song on that orange amp.
I wanna know what a small acoustic song is. Say, like, an acoustic version of the Ramones' Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue?
Have you seen the metal cover she did of sultan's of swing đ„
@@danashmore4765 with Leo at frog leap. Yes and it's fantastic :)
@@charlesmayberry2825 yeah, it's one I keep going back and listening to it over and over
What a super fun format! Loved that video.
Really enjoyed this. I've been watching you for about a month. This helped me get to know you a little better.
That was quite interesting. Clearly some of the assumptions came from people who either haven't followed you for long or are the sort of people that have their own work to do still so their unexamined assumptions get projected onto you. In either case they were talking about someone that isn't you _clearly._ A couple got you quite well. They made me smile. Made you smile too:) You are an open book in this way. You don't in any way hide who you are, but some things you don't rub in the worlds face. If they're perceptive they can see for themselves who you are because you don't try to be a mystery. You do you boo and we'll all still love you:)
Very well said.
Thanks to all who has liked and supported me this is a fantastic group and Mary is lucky to have such positive people around her. Again thanks to all.
Hey Mary, Nice video! I like the composition. The pop ups and the different backgrounds. Simple yet kept me engaged.
But I must admit what you had to say and your presence was very interesting.
Mary, you are a blessing! And whoever your partner may be, celeb or not, s/he'd better be your biggest fan.
i feel some of these questions are judgemental and you answer them so nicely
yes, like the ones about Mary's love life, as if a woman in her 30s needed to be in a relationship
welcome to the internet, where everyone feels their opinions and judgements should matter lol
Song writing is creative writing! You don't give yourself the credit you deserve.
Somethings wrong with that last sentence.
@@jamesdragonforce What's wrong with it? It's a perfectly good sentence.
@@JasperKloek I misspoke. Sorry.
@@jamesdragonforce You also missed an apostrophe, ironically.
Nice bit of pedantry!đ
Wow! Iâm impressed. Putting it out there. Good for you.
Keep going Mary, I really like your content.
Here are my assumptions.....you are a good person, friend until the end, and fun to hang out with.
I haven't paid much attention to a lot of spoken vids (yours made it through somehow this morning), you brought me some amount of joy on your response to a recorder not being a real musical instrument. Whatever makes noise is a musical instrument by basic definition... people and their choice of what to be a snob about runs the gamut between idiocy and horrific. Ok, that comment and the one about tea caught my attention (the one about rich background worked it's way in there. Everyone is rich, what we do with those riches and the imaginary place in society's clique is what creates the definition of our lives.)... funny what breaks through my morning guitar practice.
What a nice video. I wish you well on your language journey. Studying languages has been one of the more enjoyable things I've done...it can be hard work, but fun if you let it. And the reward of being to talk to people in their native language is wonderful...and I am not a people person. ÂĄBuenas suerte!
You are such an interesting person to listen to and command my fullest attention . Music is food of life and I do love listening to your songs , just keep on doing youâre wonderful thing Mary . I feel blessed getting to know you . đđđ¶đ”đ¶đâ€ïž
When I started following you I watched almost all your videos, including your Bristol week video.
I am not speculating about your boyfriend at all.
đ
Couldnât Care less, I came for your guitar playing and singing!
The assumptions people make about people they have never met and know in real life. Crazy stuff some of it. My Assumption/Opinion - You have a wonderful speaking and singing voice that is very pleasant to my ears. You are a excellent musician. Love the minimalist rig idea. I use a minimalist rig too.
What a joy just watching your videos and listening!
You really are a talented person, musician, singer, has a beautiful voice singing, but you have no idea how I love to listen your voice when you're speaking, the calm, how it sounds is enjoyable to me and I love, really love the British accent.
You're, I mean you are, so thoughtful to respond to all these assumptions and set the record straight. All in all interpretations seemed mostly innocuous. People hear what they want to hear and see what they want to see. So many filters! I didn't know about plain tea though. My business partner is in the UK. We'll be having a talk about that.
Letting go of that âfierceâ side and listening more is the definition of maturity!
and then you get to the age where you realise you've gone 'full circle' and turned into Victor Meldrew ! :-)
4:07 "When they focus" and here the camera focuses back - Brilliant!
thanks for the sharing Mary.
Can't disrespect the recorder when they appear in one of the best songs ever made. Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven features John Paul Jones playing 3 of them.
You had me at âthereâs viola jokes for a reasonâ đ
I first came to your channel for the guitar related content. I soon found you to have an interesting and enjoyable personality. Now, I also enjoy your videos like this which deviate to a more personal level. The more I know about what drives a particular person, the better I understand them and, the better I relate to the more tutorial oriented videos for which I originally came. Did that make sense? Lol.
You just love music, and sharing it with us.
Healthy âalonenessâ = such a blessing! Chao đđœ
And, Please more existential!!
Alone but not lonely.
I've been wanting to see Salamanca for a long time, what's it like? I lived in Southern Spain for a long time but never went up north.
Love it, keep it coming Mary
I really really like the music you did at the end of this video! :)
Dear Ms. Spender, I have two issues if I may please. First, you mentioned wine and hangovers are a cause and effect problem you are having. My wife and I have a wine restaurant in Busan, South Korea and have found SULFATES are the reason. If possible, try an All Natural wine or a wine marked NO Sulfates or Sulfides. This may help with the hangover result.
Second, have you put any thought into a Christmas Single? Christmas is one of my favorite seasons and I am slowly working on recording Christmas songs for family and friends. It's right around the corner.
If you ever make it to Busan, contact me and I'll be happy to show you the city and our restaurant.
Sincerely,
Fred
This guys comment feels so genuine. What a cool community here!
Mary sounds like the type of person that everyone would wanna be friends with
Hi Mary, I was one of your top 10k subscribers, and find you the most normal person on youtube. You share your stories, good or bad, and that is what life is about. Continue your journey, personally I think you would be a great DJ also....hehe
You're so so so inspiring Mary đ
Auto-correct is a harsh mistress, it will sting you without warning. With regard to the video though, Mary inspires many of us by just being who she is and she is talented and motivated. Nothing but respect for her.
Same here. A simple acoustic setup is just perfect. So you can focus on the song and not the sound.
I always subscribed to that... But now I surround myself with new and ever-more complicated gear every month - it has assisted my songwriting hugely, seldom have I ever been as productive as I am now. There are no hard rules in this game!
Simplistic doesn't mean the same as Simple.
Fun! Thank you for sharing.
Wow, what a world we live in. Here I am in the United States (Maryland) watching an English girl in Spain. CZcams has suggested your videos more than once and I usually give them some time. At first I was drawn to the beautiful face but stayed for the music. These days I watch because you're an absolute delight. I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands around the world who share that sentiment. You are a very nice diversion from all of the yuck in the world. Plus, it's so nice to see that your beauty is not just skin deep. That's what really keeps me coming back.
"Only can play blues"... I think you did a number with Leo Machiar... Frog Leap Studios? Something like a cover on a Dire Strait song?
Yeah, "Sultans of Swing" was the one they covered. She did some guitar shredding. :)
I'm now imaginging Mary doing power metal
She can shred!
Seeing is I was introduced to this channel by her collab with Leo Moracchioli I think her metal credentials are well established
Did you not see the video of her playing power metal on a banjo/guitar with Leo? You need to find that; it's one of his best videos.
Yes Mary can shred, and I can bet money she could djent if she proposed to
Great .Love your music and accent ,nothing else matters, since it is what you love to do .
enjoyed that, thanks!
Annie Clark looks like fun!
I got all excited when she said "you'd marry any Clark"... that's one of my family names!
Back to loneliness... FOR LORN
How could Maryâs âcelebrity boyfriendâ be anybody other than John Mayer? Wasnât that term coined to refer to him? đ
I'm quite embarassed that I wrote cebrity. Damn these typos!
Weirdly Katie Perry described John Mayer as the perfect Boyfriend⊠bit odd.
@@lulabecker Rhymes with âinebriety,â from which we get âinebriated.â I got your meaning!
@@AngelicusImmortus Then again, Katy Perry and Russell Brand were married for 13 months, so maybe both their tastes in opposite-sex partners are a bit suspect, yâknow? đ€
Beautiful video. Loved it.
Loved the video. You have a great style.
To us Americans, your speaking voice is like music. I want to hear it all the time.
I want her to do a sleep story on the Calm app so bad
I'm Southeast Asian and of course i think the same, her voice is just that way, the voice really matches the accent and it's pleasing to hear. I think she knows this as well which is why she speaks a lot, which is great.
"The recorder is not a real instrument."
Stairway to Heaven: "Hold my beer..."
It's the guitar that makes that music. Same as with the Blackadder II theme.
Funny that. There was a recorder in the house when stairway to heaven was released (old person) first time I ever thought myself an instrument, sounds great on the intro
Fucking recorders get too fucking wet when you play them. A tin whistle is far superior and more versatile.
@@paulmurray280 The truth is, in the hands of a master the recorder is as beautiful a woodwind instrument as any.
The bad rap it gets is solely down to the fact that little children are given cheap plastic versions as if they were toys, with which they proceed to torture everyone within earshot.
Those were played on a synthesizer.
It is good that you stay authentic and true to yourself , not altering the way you speak for eg. or creating some kind of phoney image that some might expect. Delightful presentation .
Iâve been playing guitar since the late seventies and even in bands and for me it goes up and down with playing depending on what condition my fingers are because I have problems with arthritis, the guitar playing has helped me when Iâm depressed or have some problems to solve and guitar playing gets me in good mood and calm when Iâm upset, I play guitar, bass, keyboards, piano, harmonica , accordion just keep on playing itâs good for your health đâïž
