"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. It has become one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, by some counts having spawned over 500 versions in hundreds of different languages.
In 1955, North used the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained, hence the name. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. The song was nominated for an Oscar in 1955, but the Best-Song award went to the hit song "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing".
Les Baxter, released an instrumental version which reached #2. Then song recordings were released by Al Hibbler reaching #3 on the Billboard charts, Jimmy Young which hit #1 in the United Kingdom, and Roy Hamilton reaching #1 on the R&B Best Sellers list and #6 on the pop chart. Hundreds of other recordings followed. On June 21, 1977, just six weeks before his death, Elvis Presley performed "Unchained Melody" for what would be his last television appearance, "Elvis In Concert."
It was the July 1965 version by The Righteous Brothers that became a jukebox standard for the late 20th century, regaining massive popularity when used in the 1990 blockbuster film Ghost.

My dad sings this song at my aunt's wedding, Lauren did a great job singing that song.
This is one of Lauren Alaina best performance ever. This is when I came to love this song and it become so meaningful to me personally.

I did not watch when this was aired... I have since watched the top 10 to the winner.... amazing this, singer, made it to the end... Who decided she should make it to the top 2, someone long before the voting took place.

people have to understand that every person has a different capability on how high of a note they can hit. Lauren may not have hit it, but thats perfectly fine... she made the song her own, and that is what they are supposed to do! I know I can't hit that note, and i'm pretty sure that the people criticizing her about it can't either!

@seoulmanbobbybrown The reason why they give credit to the Righteous Brothers is because everyone that did a recording of this song had different versions of it. She chose to do the Righteous Brothers version of the song. That's why she gave them credit. Personally, I think the Righteous Brothers version is the best version.
How much I need your love
It's funny how people are leaving such negative comments simply because America chose Lauren to be in the top two instead of Haley. Don't get me wrong, Haley was an amazing vocalist. Better than those who was chosen to be in the finale, but America CHOSE them. lol. We all know that the ones who don't win get more exposure and are usually more successful than the winners anyway.
Alaina was aided by second rate judges who forgot how to criticise her, Haley certainly wasn't and had to suffer criticism for good if not great performances
Lauren is in it to win it! This week she gave a memorable performance of er, well I can't quite remember, but last week she the sang the unforgettable, uh, well it's hard to recall. The week before that she belted out the, wait, did she sing that week? Has she always been on the show?
Ugh! Why was she so afraid to go for that high note? She could've easily done it. It's sad how someone so beautiful and talented could not believe in herself. Love you, LA!

I have to disagree. Looking back at the past seasons, she's one of the youngest finalists and she kicked some bums during her time. Diana was also just 16 when she made the finale and ran-up but Lauren did way better than her. Yes she wasn't the best singer in her season, knowing that Pia, Jacob and Haley made the other contestants eat their dust but Lauren did just fine. And you don't compare a 16 year old girl from the 10-15 years of experience of the other contestants from all other seasons.

@sky35hunt Oh, same here! Clay puts SO much in the way he sings, emotionally, mechanically... I could go on and on, but I won't. There's a limit to how many characters can be used! LOL Yeah, you're right! She blew the biggest note which is totally the highlight of the song. Couldn't have put it better myself!
@sky35hunt maybe she pulled back because she wanted to, she wanted to make it her own.. even though she did it was an outstanding performance... maybe she wasn't feeling too good and didn't want to embarrass herself.... who knows? but this girl has some amazing talent!

Has anyone Realized that, yes this a competition but.....LAUREN AND HALEY ARE FRIENDS!!!! Gosh I wish people would realize that. They got along real well. Also the competition is over and Scotty is the idol. I do think that it should have been a Lauren/Haley Finale but its over. Get over it. You will hear albums from Lauren and Haley so its all good. Personally Lauren was my favorite but I can dig some Haley too LOL

@sky35hunt Nah, I think they're just gonna stick up for her regardless and that's to be expected. I don't think they voted on beauty alone, she does have a sweet personality and a very pretty voice and it's powerful! I loved her original audition! Showed her raw, natural talent and she wasn't afraid to just go for it after the pressure was off, so maybe that's all that happened here. I do think you're being a bit harsh though. She's gorgeous!

@sky35hunt Oh, I didn't realize she'd chosen it. It's been a while and I can't ever remember the episodes accurately after about a week or two. LOL I thought the judges chose that one. Either way, she still should've went for it! I think she could've pulled it off, personally! It's like... she started to, then she wimped out last minute, choosing a "breathy" conclusion to what would've been an amazing note. I was sooooo disappointed!
@sky35hunt Oh I love Clay's version! He's a real talent. I'm not hating on Lauren or anything. I do think she's a good singer, but after this, I did root more for Haley or Scotty. I rly wanted James to win, but they were all MASSIVELY talented regardless. Yeah, that note at 1:47 was the one I was talking about, too. Noone's perfect though and her die-hard fans should realize that, it's ok to be opinionated and say, "hey, she coulda done better". To say that artists are perfect is nuts!

@sky35hunt On fearlessness alone, I'd have to agree. If you're gonna have a career singing, you can't be afraid to just GO FOR IT! Otherwise, you leave your audience feeling cheated. Clay was robbed though. He totally should've won that year!
Its been covered by so many artists and this version doesn't rank that high, breathing problems means that she is unable to support her voice properly. In Randy's words 'this song demands that you go there' and she didn't, oh sorry Randy got his script all muddled and wrongly used those words for another superior artist.

Clay Aiken killed the competition with this song, Lauren did a good job, but she was too scared of this song to do the same that Clay did.
lauren is really good, I'm a Haley fan... her range kept you on the edge of your seat... me at least.... besides having a splendid voice... but meanwhile, Lauren is far better than McCreery... shame i remember that name
Lauren needs to sing more current songs, preferably something by Taylor Swift. Our Song would be perfect for Lauren as it's a catchy, toe-tapping song that suits her age much better than these oldies. I hope Lauren wins the finally over Scotty.
@sky35hunt Yup! I remember Jimmy saying she could pull it out so long as she wasn't afraid to try and he anticipated that she would be. In the end, she proved him right unfortunately. I think she could've done it, but I don't know why she was so afraid to just go for it! Yes, Clay is in a league all his own!!! Going strong at #6 on American Idol's top 10 successful contestants. Ruben, the winner that year (how IDK) is down there at 9 or 10 I can't remember which. That was injustice!

I find it frustrating that, when you're talking to teens (most anyway; obviously, there are exceptions to every rule), they get so fixated on one artist that they can't handle anything constructive! If you read my comments, I have never once said I didn't like the girl or her talent. Yes, she's talented, yes, she's beautiful, but you're right! She's no Clay Aiken. These kids are gonna be disappointed when her numbers come in. They won't come close to Clay's.
