I have built 2 of these Matt, and I have 2 more in my stash. Cheap, easy to build and Tamiya look after their moulds. Their Panzer 4 D is a iis my favourite. Polycaps was the word you were looking for.

Before I got into Tamiya, I bought their Dingo from a stall at "ARMEX 1975". This was an easy build for a child. Tamiya were not locally available. Whereas Airfix was in every corner shop, so I didn't get hold of another Tamiya until I found a Model Shop in Leeds.
The soldiers were not very good. Nevertheless I built nothing but Taniya for a few years.

This was the first "serious" German armor kit my brother built in about 1974; if I remember correctly, it was the motorized version.
I always liked the booklets of information Tamiya provided in their early kits. Reference material on many subjects (like uniforms and anything to do with the Waffen SS) was hard to come by in the early 70s, these instructions at least gave you what you needed to know to finish the kit correctly.
I agree fully about the extra information provided in the booklets. And the building instruction illustrations are top notch, too. Returning to the booklets, the best Tamiya instruction manuals/booklets I've ever owned were: 1/12 Martini Brabham, 1/25 Jagdpanther, 1/100 Space shuttle, and perhaps the 1/32 Tomcat.

Great inbox review of this classic Tamiya kit. Most of Tamiya’s vintage tank kits still hold up. And are easy to make. I have one of these made and sitting on the shelf. Minius the figures and diorama. That part still needs to be made. Anyway, cannot wait to see your build video on it.

Always recommend this kit or the Older M3 Stuart for first time tank builds. Good fit easy to build and can be done in a weekend if one likes. While its not the most accurate PzII, I think at the time there was only a cobbled together one that Tamiya could use as a reference so they took a few liberties but its good enough unless you are a rivet counter. You are right on the newer Tamiya PzII for the French campaign and I think there is a Polish campaign as well, which those let you build A/B/C variants. But they are also 3x the price of this old kit which is why I think they still make it, its just a good value.

Nice little kit there Matt for its age. The newer tooling version is an Ausf A, B, or C. French Campaign or Polish Campaign. But its much more expensive at about £29. Plus you only get 1 figure.

Definitely waiting for the build video. I've built a couple Tamiya tanks. The rubber tracks seem to give me trouble. Lack of skill/knowledge on my part.

Very good value to have a tank and figures for that price of £12.50. It is a decent kit for the age and only let down by those tracks. Think they could do with a classic kit label given the age. Good, fair review.
At least Tamiya keep the prices down for their older kits, other manufacturers would be charging £25 - £30 for this kit.

Hi Matt! 😀I literally just got this kit last Friday. It seems like a nice little kit, and a good value for the price. One thing I do know about the Tamiya vinyl tracks, is the hot nail method isn't enough. You need to follow up with super glue on the joint.

Yeah, it was a decent build
Great little filler kit for those orders just shy of free shipping mark too. Quick easy build for the mojo or a 48 hour buildathon event (even at 35th scale, its that easy). Have a niece or nephew over for the weekend, hand it to them. Great for lots of people, and very reasonable prices. To think, Tamiya has been doing this quality since the late 60's/early 70's.

I have built this kit many times and it was always an enjoyable build. If you have not made a tank model this is a good one to star with. It is easy to assemble and you get 5 figures as well. It can use some detailing but all in all it is a good buy. Thanks for sharing this.

Any tips on what colors to paint it?
@@joshcameron3229 For the kit version yellow brown was the color used along with pea green spots but these were very light. You don't really have to use them. For the earliest version it would be Panzer Gray but don't use the stowage bin as this was a late North Africa Campaign modification.
I’ve built one of these but haven’t painted it yet but this is a pretty good kit for which I got for £11 pound at hobbycraft

Another weirdish question, to follow one I put on Discord. I started on Airfix 1:72 planes as a boy. I eventually slipped into armour models (possibly the Airfix Tiger I and the Sherman/LCT kit were my first) but by the age of 11 I managed to buy some 1:35 Tamiya infantry kits. This to me was a big step sideways.... how did anyone else start off? Planes? Figures? Armour? And at what scales?
Same as you mate, always Airfix, I didn't know there were other kits available until I started reading Airfix magazine, about 1970. It was always planes for me but now I am learning to appreciate military trucks and armour, the Airfix Austin tilly started me on that but I always had a soft spot for the Airfix matador.

I've build this marvelous kit twice. It's absolutely amazing considering it was released 50 years ago. By the way, using super glue works just fine with the tracks.

Just try to imagine how much money they are making on these vintage kits…Those molds are like the Golden Goose as there will always be a market for these. They just seem to have replaced the problematic decals

Yes, it was a little different to my normal 1/72 aircraft
I recently bought the Tamiya Panther in 1/35 as my 4th ever kit the other 3 being Airfix starter sets can you help me with a few questions with regards the panther 1. Is it necessary to wash the sprues before i build the kit ? 2. Can i complete the build before then painting it ? And finally 3 . I brush painted 1 of the other kits and to be honest it looks crap lol so im thinking of buying a airbrush to paint from now on But where can i find the information of what colours i need for the kit ?? Good video by the way
1. Washing helps clean the plastic and give a good surface for paint and glue to stick to. You don't have to do this step but you could encounter issues with the paint later on (and this would have helped solve them)
2. Smaller, more complicated parts can be painted before adding to the model, it might make it easier
3. My build video has the colours I used, alternatively if you look online there are some conversion charts for the paints that tamiya suggest so that you can see if you already have something suitable in your painting stash

There is - the Marder II, I built one too.
yep the PzII chassis like a lot of German tank chassis were used for multiple vehicles. Could have been the Wespe or Marder II you built

I think it is an early-70s Tamiya kit. Still good value for the $$$.
Actually think this was tooled in the late 68/69, and was part of the second or third wave of military kit released in 71. Think the original Tiger, Sherman, Walker Bulldog, and a few others barely predate this kit.
Maybe one day will get to the Museum at Tamiya headquarters and see all the original kits. Amazing to see a company start with quality, especially compared to the time period, and get continually better as they went.
Its a newer boxing of the kit but the tooling is from 71 never really been out of circulation since then.
As far as i know the age is accurate
