Recorded March 2017 at Kiwi Studios in Batavia, Illinois. Sound and video by Aphorism Studios, Inc. Thanks to Dan Nichols (recording), Kristine Mutchler (video editing), and Brad Showalter (studio).
Guitar by Marshall Bruné. Fingering and editing decisions drawn from editions by Frank Koonce and Jerry Willard, with a few of my own silly ideas thrown in, too.
Many thanks for watching. I've never done anything perfectly, but there's some good music in here. I hope you enjoy it.
As a classic guitarist i have to say. Those 20 minutes require so much practice, dedication and 100 percent concentration during the interpretation. Well done.
Can only agree - the fugue is particularly tricky!
@@mylanrichmond3441 I am currently learning this Fugue and yes, is SO hard, Ive played guitar for 8 years and it made me feel like a noob. To be fair I swapped from Electric guitar to Classical not too long ago, but is a totally different world when you go from "Fast and clean" kind of difficulty to "Make sure you can hear that middle voice through the whole song" HAHAHAHA, I swear, maintaining Bach voices is harder than maintaining a family 😭
Just listening to the first bar I already knew that this was going to be something special. I believe it's the first performance I've ever heard where the guitarist doesn't use pull-offs in those first bars, but just fingers the notes. And the tempo is a bit slower than "normal," but it all works. A very clean, precise performance where each voice is distinctly expressed. Bravissimo!
That's very kind of you, @Hotsk. Thank you so much for watching!
Bach is the legend of the music of all time. And you performed Bach excellently. Bravo...Thanks for uploading
The lines are like friends walking together on a road with serenity. Congratulations Adam!
Absolutely sublime. Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Just a great performance of a masterpiece of the great JSB.Best conpliments to you Adam.

Beautiful Bach! Superbly performed! Thanks!
One of my favourite pieces of all time, and you've done it so beautifully. Thank you so much!
What an accomplishment. I’ve spent weeks working through these pieces and I feel defeated every time! Haha. Great job, Adam.
this is the beautiful performance!
For my low skills the prelude alone has always been like a final boss and you play it, along with the rest, with a mastery, touch and feeling for which I thank you because you let us understand how wonderful this masterpiece is.
Thank you so much, Gianluca! It's a privilege to play this music, and-thankfully-there's no limit to how much we can improve when we play it.
This is awesome.
For some turn of events I am learning classical music after playing over 10 years electric guitar and oh boy, i am
loving it. Specially watching people like you interpret Bach.

Fantastic! Lovely playing! Thank you.
Beautiful playing Adam! Great balance among the voices. I appreciate the pace at which you play allowing "breathing room," as the phrases unfold.
Thanks so much, Rick. I guess I'm embracing my weakness… I can't play fast, so I do the best with what I've got.
Are you still studying with Jason at ArtistWorks?
I left a year ago after giving a recital of the pieces I had learned with Jason. A goal reached and then decided to take a break. AW with Jason gave me much inspiration.
I love that too - there's too much mechanical playing of Bach out there
Few have succeeded where most have failed. This one is perfect. I give this A-.
It's "perfect" and I only get an A minus? Wow, tough grader! haha
Thanks for watching!
@@adamroth75 my teachers always gave a bad grade for good work saying I'm not the original author to deserve higher grades. Keep the classics alive.
That was a great performance, Adam! Really like the way that you interpret Bach's music on the guitar.
Beautiful, compelling - bravo, Adam.
Wow ! So beautiful, clean, magical and mysterious. Thank you

how come? I think you have delivered the suite perfectly.
Nice performance and beautiful sound. I listened to this twice while working.

hi adam i read some of your answers to comments and i applaud your playing and your humble honesty, its a lifetimes work for every musician you are doing just great out of these pieces for many years the saraband has been my favorite so peacefull you played it well, would it by any chance be your fav movement
Yes, the Sarabande is special. That's the kind of movement I feel I can do justice to (whereas movements like the Double I'm just trying to survive!)

Well, I'm starting to play Bach, and I recognize the effort and dedication it takes to play his work cleanly, not to mention the interpretation :D.

Thank you for your kind words. I agree completely… Bach fills my soul with happiness and satisfaction.
very smooth, I'm jealous !!
Awesomely Wunderbar!!! Interesting microphone set-up. I can't play like you Adam, your really good but,... I did play my guitar inside a crowded Boston train yesterday. I stick to "Classical" (stuff from the Frederick Noad Book) , no one ever complains...and a few "Thank You" too. .... Outside the train I play and sing "Lean on Me" a lot...it's a "crowd pleaser". haha (I use my "Little Martin Guitar" with Fender Amp Can).

Hola Adam!, hablas español?, hermosisima interpretación de esta difícil suite, a mis 14 años sueño con tocarla algún día, saludos desde México!
No, but I speak Google Translate! Thanks for watching. If you are patient and work hard, you'll be able to play it. My advice: never struggle, never play faster than you can play easily and accurately. Make it easy from day one and then it will never be hard.
Muchas Gracias, de hecho quiero comenzar un canal de CZcams en el cual voy a tocar piezas que voy viendo en la academia, de hecho, llevo mas de 2 semanas planificando como lo grabare y he estado usando este video como referencia! A blessing in a musical garb
I know not much about classical piece, when the first time I heard Ubertreffen by DJ Taka respect for J.S Bach (video games music) I thought this piece would be violin concerto or something, never knew this originally a lute/guitar piece, and I don't know lute/guitar was a famous instrument at that time. interesting. anyway I love this original piece, it played so good and that microphone made a really good recording sound.
I came for the Sarabande. Relearning it now after something like 10 years. I'm envious of people who have large enough hands to play it correctly. You make that stretch at 11:56 look effortless. I had to give up on it and play the octave on the 4th string to make it work.
By the way, did you switch between audio sources in this video? when you return to the first bar at 12:30, it sounds very different.
Bravo!!!
perfection
Looking forward BWV 998...
One thing on the articulation: When the meldoy echoes itself you could Change the Tone colour at least or articulate it a little bit different. It has already a strong effect If your tone colour base line is pointicello because its so stable and you go slightly to sul tablo.
Also rhythmically you could have a more stable Baseline and your emphasizing pauses would have an even greater effect and provide a nice contrast.
Phrasing was very nice, its a strength of yours!
Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. Those are useful insights!
Lindo lindo lindo!!!

this is so great. What do you think are best for guitar - violin sonatas or lute suites? thanks!
I'm not sure there's any reason to choose. The violin sonatas may require more editing decisions regarding bass notes and range, but it all works on the guitar.
@@adamroth75 ok thanks! I started with cello suite no 1 (as i like 2nd movement a lot) - but the ones after 2nd mvmnt arent too great. I think i might go for bwv 999

What are you using to hold you guitar up? I have used a foot stool in the past but now use an Ergo Play to hold my guitar up. I would like to try out different devices to hold my guitar to see which I like the best.
It's a Murata GR-1. It's made in Japan, I think, but here in the U.S. I order it from Strings by Mail. It's my favorite support. I've tried several different ErgoPlay models, but they're not tall enough for me (I'm 6'5"). Lately I've been just been using a strap, in both sitting and standing.
Thanks for watching!
@@adamroth75 Ok, thanks. And the ErgoPlay works pretty well for me, but I want to try different devices to find the right one. And this is an amazing piece. I was supposed to perform the Prelude this semester but all concerts got cancelled from COVID-19 and it is now tabled til thiis Fall hopefully.
What microphone do you use? Beautiful sound!
Hi Pavel. Thanks for listening and the kind words.
I'm not sure what the mics are. I know there were two small condenser's in close, some room mics back further, and another mic clipped onto the guitar close to the soundboard.
If you're really curious contact Dan at Aphorism Studios. (www.aphorismstudios.com). I'm sure he could tell you.

Does anyone have the music sheet for the prelude?
¿tendrás las partituras, o como las puedo conseguir?
Never mind. Art is alive, perfection isn't. Art can't, and doesn't want to, be perfect.
Do you know how hard this man worked for you to say his art isn't perfect? He is the best guitarist on youtube.
How long does it take typically to learn a piece like this?
Geez, that's a tough question to answer. If you're a solid player learning the piece from scratch? Maybe 4-6 months to get the notes down, mostly up to speed. But to memorize, battle-test, and get ready for performance? I'd give myself a year, at least.
Of course, for me-a player of meager skills who has to work his butt off to do anything-it's a lifetime of work, always making it a little better.
@@adamroth75 If you are a player of "meager skills" then I am nothing.
Thanks for the reply.
@@Thothings It took me about 5 months to be able to play Prelude and Sarabande comfortably. Soon I'll try the rest of the suite.
what kind of tuning do you use thanks
Hi. I'm in standard tuning, equal temperment (or as near as I can get it), and A=440 Hz. So I'm actually performing the piece in a minor.
if it "C minor" why he is playing in A minor?
They transposed it to A minor for the guitar. It was originally played on a keyboard and in C minor.

what make/model is this instrument
It was made by Marshall Bruné (rebrune.com and mebrune.com). In addition to the soundport/cutaway thing that he refers to as a "bite-away", it features a unique bracing pattern consisting of just two, long curved braces. The thing is ridiculously responsive, and totally fun to play.

Very fine playing, but the guitar is a poor substitute for the lute.
They're very different instruments, for sure, and if you prefer the lute, more power to you. I was interested to find out, however, that these pieces were likely never intended for the lute: www.thisisclassicalguitar.com/bachs-lute-suites-clive-titmuss/

How to compare the beauty of a blond and a black haired person! the extra courses give extra possibilities, but the two are so different. the way you play the second dance reminds me much of John Williams.. no rush Bravo Adam!
A good performer but the music drags; the musician doesn't have enough expressiveness and vitality to keep it moving and keep the audience focused.
Hi Curatica C. These are some fair and insightful critiques (which I largely agree with). Thanks for commenting.
I hope that I didn't offend you, which I didn't mean to; quite the opposite, I was trying to offer-- what in my humble opinion would be -- some advice to help the performance gain some dynamism. Musical talent is such a wonderful gift -- it could fill one's life with satisfaction and enjoyment! People who have it are really blessed. Another thing; not every music fits any performer, and there are zillions of examples; picking one randomly: Daniel Barenboim recorded Beethoven's sonatas when he was sixty; now, Barenboim is notoriously a great musician, he can play Mozart outstandingly, but his temperament didn't fit Beethoven volcanic style at all.
Hi. No, I'm not offended at all, and I'm grateful to you for taking the time to listen and share your thought constructively.
The great thing about playing music is that you can always get better. I know I have weaknesses, and some of them I expect I'll be able to improve! Your comments about the tempo dragging and there being a need for more vitality are spot-on.
Sometimes to push myself I'll put on a recording of Eduardo Fernandez. He plays with such relentless determination and life that I can scarcely imagine myself being able to play that way. Which means, of course, that by trying to do it-however meekly-I expand my image of what's possible and make myself a little more complete an artist.
cheers from Chicago.
@@adamroth75 I love your humble attitude and lack of ego regarding these critiques. You are a special human! Cheers to you!
