Swedish lutenist Jonas Nordberg performs the Prélude and Allemande from the Suite in a minor for theorbo by Robert de Visée.
de Visée was a prominent composer and luteplayer working at the court of Louis XIV in France. His solo repertoire for theorbo and baroque guitar has survived as some of the greatest pieces for the instruments.
Jonas Nordberg has established himself as one of the world's most interesting lutenists, praised by critics for his sensitive, colorful musicianship. A versatile musician performing a wide range of styles and repertoire he is in high demand both as a soloist and chamber musician.
Recorded in Vätö Church, Sweden, 9/6-2010.

"Master Luthier, tis a fine instrument, but I fear the neck may be too long."
"Never! The neck must go on forever!"
The strings on the extended portion of the neck are only plucked with the right hand not fingered with the left so it doesn't make it impractical to play.
I read this before the camera showed it and I didn't understand it. When I saw it I laughed out loud
Helluva thing to try to carry on a bus.
Let the neck be free
"Peter, I can see your house from the end of the neck..." (John, 10:23)
When the sacredness, and joy of life seems to slip into darkness, along comes a sound like this to throw us a life line, and we survive another day.
Yes, this music is sacred. Please check out this song I composed: czcams.com/video/oRMQVugM2rQ/video.html it is sacred music of my own composition.
And when the fear of death grips our souls, we can remember that Christ died for our sins on the cross.
Brilliant. Amen.
@@luisb3426 Did he really? I've never heard from him. Maybe he'll get back to me one day.
Who would have thought a construction crane would sound so beautiful!
i lol'd hard thanks
lol! Thanks for the chuckle
🤣🤣🤣
:))))))))
You are such a good artist🌷
One can only imagine, in the distant centuries past, that outside of the courts of kings and queens, hearing music played on such a magnificent instrument, much less hearing a small orchestra, would have been a alien experience to the servant and serf classes. But to hear live music on beautifully designed instruments, played by skilled musicians - say in the early 17th or 18th centuries, would have been almost an out-of-body experience for the poor, common man. But a glorious sound indeed for anyone so fortunate to hear it. Even now!
One can only imagine how it would sound now because a compressed video and audio file on CZcams is not what it would truly sound like .
It's funny how people would end up finding ways to play music even with no instruments, i learned recently that some people play the washboard
This may be about the most perfect combination of performance, sound, music, place and videography I have seen on CZcams. Utterly gorgeous!
Here,here! - BRAVO!
+frank wallace Yes, but you ignore the fact that life is fleeting and all human endeavor is vanity. Here today. Gone in the breadth of an instant, withered and pale. It only makes any sense at all if it is but an echo of a greater eternity. Otherwise, it's all nothing but a cruel joke... So you see, the existence of God is strongly inferred. He holds all the secrets and keeps us delightfully in darkness until the inevitable. If he speaks to us in whispers, then it is shouting in our ears for he does not need to reveal himself at all... So take heart and be infinitely thankful for the gift of the grace of whispers.
frank wallace What's that instrument called?
ユウキ リト Baroquian Lute with Bordun-strings.
frank wallace yes
This is one of the best lute performances I have ever heard
Agreed.
I keep up with your Seneca posts and it is amazing that I just randomly found your comment here. lol
Marcus Tullius Cicero Great minds think alike :-)
I agree too.
its still part of the lute family though.
Robert de Visée .1655 - 1732/1733 a lutenist, guitarist, theorbist and viol player at the court of the French kings Louis XIV and Louis XV, as well as a singer and composer for lute, theorbo and guitar. ... (WIKI)
This bard added +3 Fire resistance to my team.
Literally looking for inspiration for instruments for my Orpheus-themed NPC. Glad to see a fellow nerd in the comments!
Just avoid low doors and dungeons with low ceilings okay.
Yes!
no idea what this is supposed to have meant
@@spoffspoffington then it wasn’t for you was it? 😂
I can't get enough of the Therobo, and Jonas Nordberg plays it so beautifully.
This is one of my favorite videos on CZcams. I am overwhelmed by its beauty. I watch it on a semi regular basis. It brings be somber happiness.
I remember listening this with my homies Rafaelo and Ridolfo de Abrixxieo in dowtown Firenze damn it was in 1610's good time then i wish i could go back
only 1600s kids will remember
I am from Firenze, almost never you see people playing a tiorba in downtown
I've listened to a dozen or so lute/theorbo albums trying to find one that gives me the same feeling as when watching this video. No luck so far. This is magical
The look in his eyes when he plays this beautiful instrument... So pure.
This is a thing of beauty. It would be wonderful to hear him live... This music has lost nothing with passing centuries, but perhaps it has only gained relevance. Our present world is filled with evil noise. This does something to alleviate that fact.
SPOT ON! - Hitting the nail, fairly and squarely RIGHT ON THE HEAD!!!
+NewCenturyGuitar Agree. Very beautiful from all angles and perspective.
"Well said,Robin"- Little John
Well said
This comment makes me want to play this in a metal band.
Ces airs sortant des entrailles de notre terre, ne peuvent que convenir à rnous ravir à merveille, faisant ressortir tout ce passé musical ignoré par mes ancêtres angevins.
This music is able to make me travel in time. Simply heaven.
It's a beautifully played piece and the Theorbo has a somehow mystical and melodic attribute that makes it one of the most expressive instruments there are. It's very prominent in Monteverdi's music as well.
OUT OF THIS WORLD! - This is sheer Beauty of sound; directly from the Music of the Spheres, Logos, Ism-e-Azam, Word, Holy Spirit, Comforter - call it what you will; this young Swedish man, Jonas Nordberg, cuts through the cacophany of our present ailing world with his exquisite art of meditative concentration, in his beautiful playing of this amazing instrument, which he makes sing, loud, deep and clear!
I am listening every day this MONUMENTAL interpretation by Jonas Nordberg of this MONUMENTAL composition. SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!
Splendide musique et remarquable musicien ! Merci de continuer à faire vivre cette musique qui n'a d'ancienne que le nom !
Celestial music in a rightly chosen place! How he can play all these notes without his music sheets... is beyond me. A gifted musician. Thank you!
This video has over 1.5 million views.
Given that I watched it a million times, who is responsible for the rest?
Hard to believe so many views!!!
Hier!
Awh, what an amazing sounding ancient instrument! And it needs no accompaniment of another instrument. The depth of resinance sound and tone is so beautiful!! BRAVO JONAS NORDBERG!
That is one INCREDIBLE instrument.
Yes, so true. It's got to sound even more fantastic if you're in the same room as the player.
And incredible player too
I come back every month and binge watch this masterpiece for about an hour. Thanks so much for posting.
I am absolutely in love with this instrument! It has such an incredibly full and melodious sound, and the performance itself is just outstanding!
Beautiful. I've never heard of or heard this instrument before, what a shame it isn't used more often in the modern era.
This is a gorgeous instrument, and it makes me sad to not see more music for it.
There is only a deep appreciation, or, jealousy..... Masterfully done. Magnificent. The rich tonal quality of that instrument is awe inspiring.... As is his performance. Bravo!
Or you just don't like it that much and neither appreciate nor feel jealousy.
@DaveDexterMusic I'm not sure why you'd say such a thing. Nice channel by the way!
This is so good. The pieces are amongst de Viseè's best, and the playing is sensitive and delicate with much attention to counterpoint and line. Bravo!
Ecstatic. This range of notes, depth of registers, it is like the piano and I am a pianist. Beautiful music, beautiful playing.
This is one of the most beautiful musical pieces I've ever heard! This is music that stimulates a new perspective on reality! I was truly touched by this!
La escucho de vez en cuando. Sigo pensando que la interpretación de esta pieza es la mejor que he oído nuca. Está llena de sensibilidad y de una técnica perfecta. Gracias.
What an exceptional experience this is! de Visee is usually pretty special, and this video shows him off beautifully, thanks to a truly fine lute, performer, and venue. Utterly compelling. I will definitely be going after some Nordberg recordings, after hearing this!
I am a guitar geek through and through, but I can't get over this instrument, or this player. This frigging awesome!
The lute! The Lutenist! The architecture! (And the music -- bravo, Robert de Visee...)
Great music, great player, great instrument, great hall !!!! ...and lovely phrasing and interpretation !
nah, he looks like a self satisfied prig...but I guess it is inevitable with one so young
That's the most heavy metal instrument ever made. I'm in awe of the sheer tonal weight of this device.
Mark Cuthbertson/ Fantasticboom it nerds to be black
But does it djent?
it's not. The strings are made from gut not steel, it cannot squeal, there is no floyd bridge to do vibrato and it is acoustic not pickups.
Rob Scallon just made a video where he's playing metal on one, so you're not the only one with that thought!
It's an absolute unit
Magnifique instrument interpretation remarquable!!! Bravo!!!
Amazing. Thank you Jonas Nordberg for sharing you talent!!
Once I get over my envy of someone playing such an incredibly difficult instrument so fluently, I'll love this.
so beautiful.
thank you for sharing!
This performance is beyond earth... it's simply magical . Can't get enough of this beauty. Thank you.
A gorgeous man, playing a heavenly theorbo, with divine inspiration in his shining eyes. Bravo!
Can't find a CD of this anywhere sadly. It is gorgeous. His playing is sublime.
Yes, it looks like it might not be in production anymore. A shame. 😕
He is on Apple Music 🙂
I have fallen in love with the sound of the theorobo as a solo instrument or when played with the viola da gamba. It’s unique sound touches my heart at its very core. Thank you for this beautiful music and performance.🎵
The acoustics in that place are something else. Flawless performance as well. 11/10
.....and again and again listening to this fantastic interpretation!!!!!
i turn this on loop, and listen o this all day
this is great playing, this full range instrument sounds amazing and so well balanced between the low bass and highs, and, the room and the recording are pretty incredible sounding
So resonant and beautiful. The theorbo adds a deeper dimension to lute music.
You know what they say: 'Big banjo, huge soul'.
That was lovely. Thanks. I'm going to watch that again.
Pity so few seem to appreciate this amazing instrument and its playing. Perhaps thy are short of hearing.
I don't think so. The problem really is that very few people have even heard of a theorbo (or most pre-classical instruments, for that matter), much less what it sounds like. I'd certainly hope that anyone who hears a great performance like this on such a wonderful instrument would be appreciative. Fortunately, there are many excellent lutenists now uploading their work to youtube, and hopefully reaching ever wider audiences!
Tribute to Jonas, a Swedish Lutenist: Peculiarly sublime & graceful, this pale as alabastar, strikingly elegant man in black with the slender hands of an artist reminds me of the little figurines inside of a music box; his being is captivated & at one with the music such that the instrument is an extension of his enthralled soul pouring out his heartbeat in an intricate stream of tender notes of supplicant adoration. -Cynthia Quispe
Utterly exquisite, such sensitive playing, beautifully sonorous instrument and music and acoustic in harmony...thank you
Astoundingly beautiful! Perception, intuition, execution in perfect balance. A rare experience.
Thank you Jonas for making the world more beautiful.
Волшебный и чаруюющий тембр!
Thank you for the upload. Sounded great, acoustics right in the church.
This is the most perfect sound I have ever heard. Amazing production and talent.
I am listening regularly this monumental interpretation played with his soul!!!
I am a new fan, and will be ordering your stuff! Well done, Monsieur!
World class.
Even though I can't play an instrument, I enjoy listening to the music you play😉
Once I year I listen to this for the past 10 years. Thank you! I can't explain it but it comes to my mind and I must listen to it
Fantastic interpretation played with the soul of the artist.Excelent!!!!
1:20 to 1:50 is one of my favorite bits of music ever
Same. I love the chord right at 1:45 ... gives me shivers.
So true, such a special moment.
thanks for this
truly must see a theorbo performance live someday
Perfect: performance, sound, music, place, image.
Jonas' playing of this absolutely stunning piece on that marvelous instrument (always loved it) is breathtaking!! Bravissimissimo Jonas! and thanks for publishing this...
Fantastic! A lovely interpretation, played with an outstanding technique and such a strong vision of the music that it actually made me understand in a totally new way some of the melody conventions of the time. So serene and peaceful, like a beautiful, old, empty choir is. Thank you very much.
+Jarkko Juntunen Same thoughts exactly, and I'm in TX. music cuts through all boundaries, how lucky are we.
Wonderful, Jonas, absolutely gorgeous and perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your great and beautiful talent.
The music and performance are both glorious.
Thank you for posting-John
The theorbo is one of my favorite instruments. If it wasn't like 10 feet tall I'd even get one for myself. But man... look at that size.
It's gigantic.
Classic cannot get badass more than this!
Auch beim 10ten mal hören, einfach wunderschön !
Really a pleasure to listen! Thank you very much!
I pity the person who lacks the humanity to vote down this brilliant performance of such an exquisite composition, played on a fantastic instrument, in a truly beautiful setting. This is pure art, in every sense of the word.
To each his own. I love this music, but I don't expect everybody to agree with me.
"Anyone who doesn't like what I like is sub-human" - said this pretentious asshole, then promptly farted and enjoyed the fumes.
Bravo trés belle interprétation
rich tone, beautiful phrasing, incredible performance!
ummmmmm...... WOW!!!!! Thanks SOOOO much for posting this!!!
Спасибо, ваши струны рассказывают историю...
Not sure why but this gentleman dressed the way he's dressed, the decoration in that church, the cinematography and the beautiful yet sinister sounds that come out of the Theorbo gives this whole thing some pretty 666 vibes and I like it.
a special kind of feelings... love it! thanks a lot for sharing! :)
UNBELIEVABLE!
AMAZING!
This is music from another dimension.
THANK YOU JONAS and my deepest respect ❗
I am in love
I find standard lutes, theorbos, Renaissance guitars, Baroque guitars, romantic guitars, and modern classical guitars to have their own distinctive sounds despite using the same or similar string materials. It's also a matter of length, gauge, and also the body and size of the instrument itself. Even though a theorbo has single stringed courses, it still sounds distinctly lute-like. It has a big lute body and a long neck with long strings. A romantic guitar is absolutely tiny compared to a modern classical. Renaissance and Baroque guitars have different tension, size, and string length as well in comparison to romantic and especially classical. Romantic and classical are relatively close, yet still distinct.
The sound is a perfect middle ground between a piano and a guitar. Beautiful.
Incredible. These instruments and compositions are (imho) the most transcendent and yet richly human the Western Civilization has ever created. Thank you for your dedication and service in keeping this music alive for us.
Божественно звучит!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️🌷🌷🌷
God in Heaven. How is this possible?
Practice and dedication 💪🏻❤🙏🏻✝️
Magical performance and location. I loved it.
Tim
Such a gorgeous instrument. Played so beautifully as well
The Theoboro is such a great sounding instrument! So many historical instruments are unknown by the majority of people, which is such a shame.
the tone sounds like a mellow version of a harpsichord (without the bright plucking during the note attack)
Such a young guy and such a clean performance on such a rare instrument. Breathtaking.
BRAVO!! simply outstanding
what a piece, superb
Nice sound!
Amazing instrument, with some really long bass strings which sounds almost like an additional instrument playing the bass notes. Wonderful playing. (The carrying case for this theorbo must be a hazard while walking through a crowd.)
Very impressive. Fabulous theorbo, very skillfully played!
ahhh...such beauty!!!
cannot thank you enough for playing!!
