    This knife is currently my blue-collar EDC. I work in the cabinet/carpentry trade. I've carried a lot of different knives, all quality builds with decent steels. I've been carrying this exact knife for the past 6 months and all I can say is that it's AMAZING. First of all, the tried-and-tested Spyderco lock back design is absolutely bombproof. Next, the ergos are perfect. PERFECT for hard use! Most importantly, the steel... Spyderco's K390 is magical. I simply do NOT understand how my knife, after ALL of it's somewhat abusive hard use, is still as razor sharp as it is! Seriously.... this stuff is nuts. I live and work in SE NC and we have high humidity all year long. I've been carrying my knife all spring and summer and often work for hours drenched in sweat. But, a couple times per week I'll give the blade a quick wipe down. As of today, there is only a very faint patina forming. Personally, I wish there was more. So, yes, this knife is an outstanding choice for a hard-use working knife. Spyderco, wow... WELL DONE.

    I think you are right in thinking of K390 and Maxamet as being in the same class of steels. Both are high tungsten carbide, low chromium powder metallurgy steels with extreme hardness and edge retention. Maxamet focuses hard on the edge retention side, while K390 sacrifices a little edge retention for better toughness and rust resistance (although still not stainless.) Rex 45 would also fit into this category. I have forced patinas using vinegar on all three of these steels and found K390 to be considerably more stain resistant than either of the others.

      I was considering picking up a maxamet pm3 as a replacement for my recently lost my k390 pm3, but given your input on corrosion resistance I should probably stick to the k390.

    A+ review. Really enjoy your content.
    The Endura in zdp has changed what I like in a knife. I own pm2, para3 Endura 4 and looking at stretch 2 in K390 AND Police 4 in anything other than vg10. It’s a fine steel however I prefer 154cm in that class.
    Again, A+ content from production quality to information provided.

  • @goodnessgraciousitellya5004

    I REALLY love this knife!
    PROS:The extra blade thinness relative to PM2/3 is a plus and actually quite noticeable in slicing tasks. K390 takes and holds an absolutely wicked edge, similar but slightly superior to M4 (which I love) but seems more resistant to corrosion. I like the 50/50 choil and overall ergos more than the PM family.
    CONS: lacks the fidget factor of comp lock spydies and the bevels came noticeably uneven from factory (but with a screaming edge, nonetheless)

  • @NikeaTiber
    @NikeaTiber Před rokem

    I just ordered one of these and I'm pretty pumped for it. I like the pm2 a lot (own one in maxamet) and edc a maxamet native 5. The lockback on the native 5 has grown on me a lot actually; I am ambidextrous and while the pm2 is easily ambi-open, left handed operation of the compression lock is possible but not as secure as left handed operation of the spyderco lockback (imo).
    The lockback on a spyderco can be tuned a bit by *very slightly* bending the spring bar back a little to reduce the preload. This will reduce opening drag a bit and make it it easier to push the lock in far enough to allow the blade to drop past the lockbar. I'm not sure if the stretch will need this or not, but the native 5 definitely benefited.
    I've thought about getting some of those contoured scales for the pm2, but I like how the stock grey is close to the patina maxamet develops.

    Vg10 is garbage on anything other than kitchen knives, and there way overpriced for the steel, vg10 is just not a good steel, for anything in my opinion, its not strong, doesn't have good edge retention, and there are so many other steels that are stainless and have better strength and edge retention for the same money or a little more, I think of vg10 the same way I think of the 400 class steels (420, 440, etc.), there old, not that that bad, but they are older steels with subpar performance, there is so much better steel pit there, I would rather have d2 (American d2) or 14c27n steel than vg10, at least there a bitnstronger, and 14c is actually fairly strong, even buck knives boss treatment cannot bring the 400's up to modern standards of steel performance, and I'm not a steel snob, though I love my modern powder steels, I also really like 154cm, 1095 (when its done right), d2, nitrov (for a good price), I have just never really had good performance from vg10, maybe it was the heat treat, I've never had spydercos, I got burned on it before I got into spydercos knives, and spydercos offers so much more steel than vg10
