    I love Steven's answer to the Parasite question; I think it's much more complex. Minari IS american fundamentally NOT Korean, and there is a distinction between the Korean and Korean American experiences. So just because there is an acceptance of KOREAN films, Korean Americans and overall ASIAN Americans have a long way to go.

      Very true. There's a difference between "hey, look, this is how people from other country live! How interesting (watching from a distance)" vs. "hey, look, there is this family from other country just moved in to my neighborhood, how do I feel about that, how will I treat them".

      Asian Americans have come a long way already. I think of my parents who came here in the 70s who were dirt poor and didn’t know the English language and culture, and now their children are opening businesses and my nieces and nephews are looking to become successful young adults. This is such a great country for us.

    • @commanderhedgehog590
      @commanderhedgehog590 Před 3 lety +79

      @@matineyang I sort of agree on the aspect that Asian Americans have achieved a lot, but on terms of being accepted by the public, there's a long way to go still, not to undermine the achievements. There's still casual racism and discrimination towards Asian Americans, and people making the distinction between an Asian American and Asian rather than group them together, and there's still stereotypes of being an "ideal minority" that's usually overlooked or ignored basically. I think we're at the beginning that we're actually seeing these problems noticed on the surface, but it's barely scratching the surface for any real change to happen, at least for now. One example was dozens of Asian American people being blamed for the pandemic and getting beat up or killed, but I barely saw any coverage on the beatings or people really talking about it, and basically being a scapegoat or "these few people were racist" so all of them must be racist, and then we're just back at the beginning, so I think there's still a long way to go.

    This film is actually an American film, not Korean film. The director is American (Korean American) and the producers are American( Steven Yeon and Brad Pitt). The story is about a Korean American family who immigrated to US in the 1980s, which is a very American story. The adult actresses, Han Yeri and Yoon Yeojeong, are the ONLY Korean actors from Korea, the rest are Korean American actors. Just bcz more than half of this movie is in a Korean language doesnt make it a Korean movie. Parasite by Bong Joonho is definitely a Korean movie because the directors, producers, all the staffs involved, actors, investors are all Koreans based in Korea but this film is an American movie produced by Americans. If the language is in a foreign language, does it automatically make it a foreign movie even though it is an American production??? I dont understand....

      Exactly. But arguably, the problem isn't so much that the Golden Globes has this in the Best Foreign Film category. Their criteria states that if 51% of the dialogue is in a language other than English it's a foreign language film. Great. Fine. But it's the fact that a Best Foreign Film nomination excludes the film from a Best Picture nomination.
      The Academy allows wins in both...step it up, Globes.

This doesn't mean that "Minari" is a Korean film; it is an American film that has the Korean language spoken in it. I have watched the film and must say this is one of the films that will stay with you for many years. Absolutely well-deserved award, however for the WRONG category! This is an American film!! Another film "Inglourious basterds" won the best picture in 2010 that had German and French language for more than 50% but that movie was NOT in the foreign language category, Pure discrimination GG!!

    Sometimes people are trapped in their own struggles and it's tough for them to remember what they once promised, what they dreamt and they also can't understand what others are going through during this process and even though they care for them they don't understand how much they are affecting by influencing them with their outlets..
    I loved the relation between grandmother and grandson especially because of how contrasting and similar they are..it makes us laugh and feel emotional for them..we see their insecurities, their understanding of mental and physical problems and how their differences build their relation..Their relationship is a kind of soul for this film..That kid's character plays in our minds for sometime after watching the film.
    Music is very good in this movie and right from the first scene we almost feel like we are in the middle of the movie..We feel as if we have come to their lives in the middle and so much has happened even before this.
    There is a lot of conflict among the characters because of what they are trying to make and since they are immigrants we see how that multiplies for them as they have to fight the challenges even from outside and we see how they dicuss many minute things to go with their normal lives..Sometimes we are so caught up in the long term goals we tend to ignore the short term necessaries, this film shows that perspective in a beautiful way... After watching the film if we think why this film is named 'minari', the answer for that thought itself gives us goosebumps..It has an impeccable ending..The whole movie makes us feel the writing..one of the most wonderfully written screenplays..
    Though it shows how important a place might be to grow it also shows that understanding in the family is more important, without that anything is irrelevant

The ending emphasize on d scene that they kept arguing after doctor visit and suddenly lost what he had worked for but hearing from the doctor that u are getting better just like david heart condition is actually the best news and hope you will ever have in life... your health is ur wealth! I believe Jacob the father realized that at d ending scene when they were picking up minari with David very cool ending!
