Westminster being the home of Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Houses of Parliament as well as providing interchange with the Circle and District Lines as well as providing access to nearby Westminster Pier and Westminster Bridge.
Westminster was originally opened by the Metropolitan District Railway on December 24th 1868 as Westminster Bridge with the present name of Westminster dates from 1907.
Platform extensions to the Circle and District Lines were added between 1962 and 1964 to enable 8 car trains however overtime with reduced to 6 cars in 1980
However today all Circle and District Line trains operate S7 Stock trains with the 7 being the number of cars which phrased out the C Stock and D Stock between 2012 and 2017 being built by Bombardier in Derby which since January 2021 taken over by Alstom.
For the JLE the London Underground Ascent Act for authorisation of was issued on March 16th 1992 with construction of the Jubilee Line Extension in December 1993
However unlike other stations built on the Jubilee Line Extension the layout here completely differs here with the Westbound and Eastbound Jubilee Line platforms being stacked on top of each other rather than side by side.
The reason is to enable to support the new Portcullis House office building which would have resulted subsidence which also at the time during construction a new bridge had to be constructed to support the Circle and District Line Tracks which in the process had to be lowered by 8 inches.
In fact during construction the the Circle and District Line platforms had to be kept open to avoid the risk of overcrowding which to it's lowest depth of 120 feet making it the deepest station on the Jubilee Line.
Because of the engineering difficulties it was the final station on the JLE to open being on Tuesday December 22nd 1999.
The Jubilee Line extension from Green Park to Stratford overall opened a year late and exceeded it’s original construction budget of £2.1 billion and in the end due to overruns from engineering difficulties
The main factor was that during the construction of the Heathrow Express route from Hayes and Harlington to Heathrow Terminal a series of Tunnel collapses would occur on the evening of October 18th 1994 which fortunately no one was killed how it cost millions of pounds of damage.
As a consequence all construction on the JLE for over a year and like the JLE it was also using the new Austrian Tunnelling method.
An HSE inquiry found the company Baffour Beatty guilty for violations of Health & Safety regulations and was heavily fined plus new rigorous safety guidelines put in place
In the end the final cost of the Jubilee Line Extension in the end was £3.5 Billion.
All Jubilee Line Trains are formed of a 7 car 1996 Stock introduced on the line between Christmas Eve 1997 and July 2001 built by GEC Alstom and Metro Cammell now just Alstom in Barcelona and Washwood Heath in Birmingham originally as 6 car sets however by 2004 the demand on the extension had been underestimated.
For example Canary Wharf station was designed originally to cope with up to 50000 people a day however by 2004 it was reaching more than 70000 so a decision was made to increase all 53 sets from 6 to 7 cars.
On December 25th 2005 the line was closed to enable modifications of the PEDs between Westminster and North Greenwich and also all 1996 stock being upgraded from 6 to 7 car sets with another 10 being built in Barcelona to bring the total up to 63.
It was originally planned to be closed for 1 week however it only took just 5 days and the line reopened 2 days early on December 31st.
After the COVID Pandemic between March 2020 and May 2023 passenger numbers along with most activities have returned to normal and shouldn't be surprising how anytime of the day it can be extremely busy.
