- This build series is all about how to renovate your homes exterior. If you plan on tackling a DIY project like this in the future, it might be beneficial to watch this series. Part 1 is all about the demolition and preparation for the future LP Smartside siding installation. This series will definitely have some twists and turns, and like most remodels...does not go as smoothly as I planned it would.
I don't want to scare you, but no remodel goes as planned...and you always spend more money than you think!!
Thankfully LP Helped out with the project by Sponsoring it, so please go check them out with the link below and learn about the power of durability when using LP SmartSide. Their support made this video possible to create for you.

“What you’re saying is I could be crushed” “No you’re there to protect the door” 😂🤣😂
Thats the funniest....
at that age, you damn near feel invincible...
Kyle, what great boss you are. Greg is making out like a bandit on this. Upgraded house, no rent increase and a paycheck!
Not bad eh
@WoodenSkye ~ First of all, Kyle is the landlord and it is his responsibility to upgrade the property as necessary. Greg is not making out like a bandit. He is working. He is not getting anything for free. Why should his rent be raised? As a tenant he is caring for the property that Kyle has invested in. While I am happy that Kyle is not a slum lord I do not see why the rent should be increased just because Kyle is doing his duty as a responsible landlord.
With Ryan's czcams.com/users/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE plan, I was like one taken by the hand and led step by step from start to finish. Thank you very much Ryan!
I definitely feel your pain, Kyle. The mighty struggle with the small roof above the front door defines EVERY 'home improvement' project I've ever done! I was laughing -- not at you -- but because I've been there and done that myself! Usually alone. Anxious to see how this project comes out, and I'm glad you decided to do it the right way. It'll be a good decision in the long run.
I used LP smartside on my house when the vinyl siding was destroyed by golfball sized hail 2.5 years ago.
Insurance only paid for the 2 sides that were damaged & the roof. I paid out of pocket for the upgrade of the siding materials to LP & upgraded windows. I did all of the work myself to offset the upgrades, while most of my neighbors used storm chasing contractors. They mostly got conned into replacing the vinyl with more vinyl. I’m not bragging but my house is the best looking house in the neighborhood. Moral of my story is that LP smartside is very user friendly and easy to work with.
Totally agree which is why I selfishly wanted to partner with them
RR Buildings on another note I did not need to pull a permit in Denver, CO for siding & windows if I as the homeowner was doing the work myself. My roofer did need to pull a roof permit.
Definitely a jurisdictional type of thing. I find it strange that I’ll need to pull a permit for flatwork when I widen my driveway. Something to do with stormwater runoff 🤷♂️
@@michael-michaelmotorcycle In Florida, I do not need to pull a permit if I'm working on my own home that I live in, but if I'm working on one of my rental houses, which I also own but don't live in, I have to pull a permit.

Having been screwed, blued and tattooed by an insurance company, they are require by law to bring your home up to before loss condition. Since they can't match siding, they are required to replace the entire exterior surface treatments.
What my insurance company did was to send in a contract claims adjuster that was near impossible to make contact with. When I finally got his estimate, it was low by over $20k.
I had a deck built on 6x6 posts and 2x12 stringers with 2x6 planks for decking. They based the repair using 4x4's, 2x6's and 5/4 deck boards.
Insurance companies suck. Not everyone can take time off of work to deal with the claims process and attempt getting your life and home back in order.
Gunga Dinn agree 100%. My initial estimate was under 10k. After fighting & screaming for nearly 8 months they sent out a 3rd party adjuster and when all was said & done my claim was 38k. They wanted to match the vinyl siding and I did not want to put vinyl back on - also they wanted to replace 3 windows, which is where I paid some out of pocket for upgrades to the siding & all windows. The hailstorm was on May 13 2017 and my roof was installed the week of Christmas that year. I finished up the siding myself on my days off and it was well after the anniversary of the storm. Bottom line is that people are impatient and they just see dollar signs and most people are unaware of the work/labor involved or material costs. Most of my neighborhood was rebuilt in the first 4-6 months after the storm by storm chasing contractors and the houses & roofs look slapped together. My house was one the last houses to be finished and it looks great, because I would not settle for their lowball antics.
Very glad you decided to film this and upload the series!
I’m definitely pumped to watch the follow up to this video. Really cool stuff, resurrecting a nice little house back to better than new!
Cool, glad to see some different things!
“See, now I’m safe. I am safe from anything in the air.” That made me lol.
Land of the free, home of the building inspectors.
Yeah. Do those dudes just drive around looking for remodeling?? They always seem to show up. Maybe the neighbor calls them...
I gutted and renovated my house in Houston, permits werent that expensive and every inspector was friendly and gave me hints on what I could do better. We're lucky that the building dept here is pretty good.
There was plenty of unpermitted bullshit in this house from the previous handyman, which was a big reason for redoing every-damn-thing and getting it inspected.
I was waiting for this series to come out. Can't wait for the rest to come out.
If there's one thing I've learned over my time watching it's that Kyle & crew never half asses any job. Keep up the good work guys!!!
Kyle, you’re going to love the new siding. I just helped a friend side his new cabin with LP siding and it looks great. The siding we used has two choices for starting the bottom row, I’ll be watching to see how they do it. One is a foam material and the one is a strip of siding. Hopefully they’ll show the difference of how hot / cold weather effects each.
I was waiting for this video, good job!
The cedar underneath looked surprisingly solid for most of the boards.
Yes
I love the optimism and belief Greg has in his super human strength. He's always like "I got this".
All I do is remodels. I love them lol. Good money and I love taking something old and ugly and make it look new and awesome!
hey Kyle! I absolutely love your videos and have learned a ton! When you mentioned a permit it reminded me of something a friend of mine said when I went to do work on my own house. "Don't forget to bend over and ask permission and pay a tax to do work on your own house." Got to love government
Haha so true
AWESOME timing sir, I have a home in northern Mi built in 1954 that looks strangely alike that needs an update. Cedar siding with about 10 coats of paint, and cellatex sheeting, my windows even look similar, just larger. It looks like I am going to end up doing the same thing.
Will keep coming out with the videos stay tuned brother! LP did wonders for this house
Love all your videos mate, highly entertaining. Thanks for sharing them with us :)
Thank you
I'm looking forward to this build thank you
Remodeling is never easy. It's a battle of attrition and budget.... Great job as usual...
Good fun video, nice change of pace
Love this can’t wait to see the next video.
Thank you for your honesty
YES! I was just about to do this on my garage!
I love these types of videos. I’m working on my roof tomorrow. I can’t say I’m looking forward to it. But I looking forward in getting it fixed.
Watched this process on IG and still I have to watch it again on YT. Love all of the content! Great work, keep it coming!
Haha thanks bro... maybe you’ll see more here or different
Love how you have to pay your masters (government) to notify them that they can charge you more on property taxes! What a racket!!!
That aside, looks like a fun series!
I learned a little some of the stuff I knew I still learning I'm 50 Plus I'm still learning thank you for showing me take care of your crew and family cheers with a beer
I do believe you are the busiest man on social media! Thank you for all your content. You provide a great example for viewers to see the importance of work ethic and taking pride in your work!
Lol probably because my social media isn’t my real job... haha I work 50 hours on site first.. then edit social media content... sometimes I wonder why
RR Buildings your work is appreciated! After spending 25 years in the residential construction industry, I now teach high school construction. Often I will show a video of yours to my classes when it applies to a lesson I am teaching. Long story short, your work is worth sharing!
Awesome job!!
Finally!!! Found a video dealing with a remodel involving Celotex. I'm remodeling a Farmhouse and we have a mixture of Celotex and Johns Manville Weatherite sheathing. House was never insulated or wrapped. Current cladding is cedar board-and-batten. I've been sweating bullets trying to figure out how to go about insulating (didn't want to create a moisture trapping issue) though after this video I think I'm going to take the time to remove all siding, sheathing and properly sheath with OSB, wrap the house and reapply cladding. THANK YOU!!!
Great stuff you never disappoint
Awesome... Residential Renovations !!!!
This was really fun to watch...thank you!
Spray Foam for sure! It will pay for itself and make the house much more comfortable. Plus, it is super easy now with everything open. Replace the porches too. Nothing worse than trying to open a door in the rain and snow with no cover.
I'm not a huge fan of lightweight wrought iron, but those porches played a big role in giving the house its character. Without them, it would just be a generic box. I'm also inclined to preserve the windows; they don't mass-produce that style anymore and anything from Home Depot (nice as some of them may be) is just going to give it that "Home Depot renovation" look.
Stoked for this build series, was getting kind of tried of the post buildings.
Mac Family nice with some chance, I like it a lot. Greetings from Norway Koos
Not one of your normal video, but a very good one. Loved it.
You're dealing with the same issues I found with my house. I just ripped the siding off my house to insulate, sheath, and wrap along with new windows.
Step 1: Plan your remodel. Step 2: Throw your plans away because your house already had a plan to bite your ass! Good job so far , much faster pace than mine!
So true
Kyle when the camera pans the building as you all were gathering the old materials into a pile, the music stopped just for a second and I heard the beautiful sounds of birds chirpiing in Small Town, Illinois. What beautiful sounds!
Good for garage!!! Thank you
I agree, remodel/renovation projects can prove to be nightmares!
What a great episode. 👍🏻
Now you will need to upgrade the inside. Lol thanks for sharing
You have to wonder what the original builder was thinking when he decided to plant the house foundation where he did. You can see he was short on space between the driveway and the back door having to opt for the very short step way either left or right of the door and then the garage door opening is just just of the line of the wall of the house. There's so much extra space in the front yard ! All he needed was an extra 4 feet to make the rear entry more sensible and better use of the area between the garage and the house. FOR SURE, you have to insulate at this stage without question. All of the labor to insulate is mostly done...it would be a serious humane violation not to and don't forget the attic space. Thanks for sharing. (Nice basement).
Thank u so much for sharing
You’ve went this far, do the windows👍 Your luck is like mine, like watching a video of my everyday life 😂
Not your usual kind of video but really enjoying so far looking forward to pt2
I spent a year doing siding with a friend and most of our jobs were tear off and reside. There was always something hiding behind the siding, especially here in the Pacific Northwest.
So true
You, my friend are real 👊
I was hoping to see the footage of this on CZcams! I kept up with the project on Instagram, awesome work!
Nailed it. 👍
That porch roof was the best built part of the house LOL
8:50 how cute you and Greg sharing the same ladder... That's love right there 😂
I was waiting for this series!!!
I've never seen those end nippers with the plunger weight thing on them. Nifty!
Renovations, yep, always something unplanned!
At least you have not found massive termite damage, that is always a problem here in Tokyo!
Cheers!
It's going to be a little drafty in there tonight!
Wow! That place does need your help!
oh i like this 👍👍
Alright Kyle. This will be a great re-build series. Looking forward to the next installment. Enjoy the day . Ray L
Hello Kyle, I like your slide hammer nail puller! I have had one of the old style ones for many decades and although they work great they have such a narrow jaw and hinge point that resharpening them is only possible a very few times. I will have to do what you did to a set of my nippers. The trick with them anymore is to try to find those that have a chisel bevel to enable them to grip flush with the surface. I did find a pair but it wasn't easy several years ago. Love this video as it is truly real world. I hope you don't leave the cavities open anything would beat that. Toss in some batts before sheathing at least. An old house may not be worth the foam cost but some insulation would be soo much better. Take care. Doug
Great video I liked it something different
That 400 spike though! Twice as thick as I thought it was going to be from your description. You know some guy 50 years ago spent a whole weekend sweating and installing that fix.
Yeah crazy isn’t it
Isnt it just a bolt?
Spray foam! Totally worth it
Really like your passion in the intro. Looks like you really like that ol house and this project.
It’s my house so I’m kind of married to it
Love that ladder/platform set up at 12:28 ;-) An accident waiting to happen shortcuts like that! Also get some decent masks stocked, heck knows what you were breathing in!
Followed this on Instagram but looking forward to the more in depth videos, it turns out great!
That home built slide hammer/nail pulling pliers set is sweet! I need to build some of those.
Haha i came across this comment just as that part of the video came up. Must say its an awesome idea.
I like this
as a residential remodeler here in n.y we run into the no insulation issue more than anyone would like too lol we usually just do fiberglass batts or spray foam if we are going from inside the house and the home is 2x4 construction. One of our codes is homes need to be brought up to atleast an r21 so when its 2x4 construction we eaither have to foam it or add 2in ridgid insulation board on the outside
It might be costly but, spray foam. It's really the best way to go, it does more than just seal up your house. Your house, your choice though. Looking forward to seeing part 2. Cheers :)
I've been dying for someone to do a video like this. I want to do the exact same thing to my own house. Insulation seems to be my holdup. I want to foam it but then you'd be spraying right on the backside of the drywall. My electrical box goes thru the back so there's no just hanging it off, so there's that too. Some sporadic termite damage to fix as well...
I have vinyl on my house and I'm definitely not in love with it, it is nice not having to paint though. I'm excited to see how the LP product goes up.
I really like the pole barn builds, but it's nice to see something more relatable as a homeowner. Please keep up the good work!
Great job. Just curious when we’re gonna get to see the finished bathroom on your house
Kyle later after the LP siding crew leaves you can still Spray Foam those cavities from the inside via a Spray Foam Company they'll drill holes in the walls add spray foam then cover the drill holes and make the inside walls like new no removing drywall needed
Thank you 😊
As I watch this series for the 2nd time the intro music hits differently since having a kid that watches Hey Bear.
Love how the insulation panels say monsanto lol
Love the work place banter on your crew. Greg seems like a solid dude.
What do you think about just putting batts in the stud cavities? Would be pretty quick and easy. And way better than what you had before.
Reinstall windows to allow thinner sheathing - 3/4 is going to be crazy expensive, probably worth the savings to just move the windows 3/8 inch. Great channel, stay safe
Great Work bro 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✌✌✌✌✌
Even fiberglass batts would be a drastic improvement in comfort.
Just think the best thing about this is if you are going to sell it or rented it out you can have that person go to this video to see all the work that you guys did it.
You'll never own a lawn mower tire that holds air again after dropping all those nails on the ground! Looks like a good project, good job man!
Iam ur new subscriber you guys are fun to watch .. :) its nice neat house hard work ..
I'm really enjoying watching this remodel, as it's the type of thing I've done as well, including using LP Siding. As I recall LP had an issue in the past when this siding was used in a wet environment. But it should work great on your house. Instead of spraying insulation, can't you use batts?
we used to live in Chicago suburb, even tree trimming services also need a permit.
"You're there to protect the door"🤣
Go to Lowe's and get Johns Manville white batt insulation. No itching, very fluffy, excellent product.
thanks
Good morning from Auckland, New Zealand.
Metal panels like on the barns would be great.
With all the RR Buildings trimmings to make it look all Class A!
The net curtains are beautiful 🤣
Glad to hear doing it rite 😁
Good looking guys! Lol
Definitely do the spray foam thing, just like you did in your bed and bathrooms. It may be pricey, buy it will pay off.
So, wait. You own this house. Greg's stuff is inside which implies he's renting from you. You pay him to work on his place of residence, but you get some of that back each month for rent. Am I getting this right? Fricking brilliant!! Love the vids, guys. Keep it up!
Thanks for making the series. I gave up after watching. Dang it's a lot of work.
I like this kind of content you should do more. I dunno if anyone else will agree
