11:59 my interpretation of the show: they turned gray. The colorful characters being thrown into the machine at the end were being turned into the gray guard characters coming out of it because being colorful was considered a “thoughtcrime” in the show. Notice the difference between the choreography between the colorful guard and the gray guard characters. The former being more fluid, expressive and independent while the latter was more rigid, organized and uniform.
I think was based on George Orwell’s 1984 book about ideas like conformity and sinister actors stripping people of their individuality.
Ooo chile I loved this show lol. There was a lot of details that portrayed the overall theme very well and tied everything together

I actually graduated from these high schools (Plymouth-Canton), and this was the all time greatest show our marching band has done. It won us our 3rd (and last) national champion title. 6 out of the 7 judges gave this show 1st place (the visual ensemble judge gave them 6th place).
There are so many intricate details about this show: the whistle-blowing, the “Big Brother is Watching You” sign, the ropes on the uniforms that connect to other uniforms instead of their usual sashes, and the big converter machine they drop the colorful “pixies” in to make them all silver and the same. This show is very reflective of George Orwell’s novel “1984”, which uses the loss of individuality as its main theme. And the music was originally written with Superman as its inspiration, it fits this Thoughtcrime theme FAR better!

I absolutely loved this show! My band competed against them and we watched old videos of the competitions and I was always so intrigued by this one!

I think I may have seen them live that year! My brother was drum major for another MI HS at the time. Those tubes were interesting
