Lighthouses of England, Start Point, Devon, early 1990's

  • This was filmed in the early 1990's. It was shot on video tape, some of you may have to Google what that is/was!
    I have also included a short interview with Gordon Partridge, one of the Keepers there. Also there are fog horn sounds but it is the electric peep peep and not the old fog horn sounds as that structure had collapsed some years before, as can be seen in the footage.

    The Fresnel lens is gone here too now. It was recently replaced by an LED lamp. Also, I see the old fog signal building that collapsed after the cliff gave way. I never thought I'd see that.

      Yes everything seems to be a lot different now, I wonder how long into the future before they do away with the lights entirely, cheers.

      @@PeterHalil Lighthouses have a global following, and many are coming under private operation. In the US, many lights that were deactivated are being relit as private aids to navigation. Lighthouses won't be phased out altogether.
      According to a US Coast Guard statement, one cannot rely on one type of aid to navigation. Lighthouses, fog signals, buoys, GPS, and radar are all necessary for safe navigation.
      There was a lighthouse in British Columbia Canada that still has keepers that the Canadian Coast Guard had announced was to be de-staffed, but they quickly changed their minds after the keepers saved the lives of the crew of a stricken yacht that sank not far from the lighthouse.

    Great video, lovely content. The sound of the Kittiwakes, true seabirds as against Gulls. Only come into shore to breed nesting on perilous perches, rest of their lives they spend out at sea.

    Start Point is a great lighthouse, thank you for uploading this footage - it's all an important part of history I think. Me and my mate up until a few years ago used to enjoy sitting by the beach at Slapton and watching it sweep. I'm sure it always seemed alot brighter than other lighthouses too, when coming over the hills towards Slapton you could see the 3 sweeps lighting up the sky. Sadly, as per many comments below, the optic and bulb were removed in favour of the usual LED upgrade. I appreciate that TH are going to make these as simple as possible, especially considering they're not really needed so much now, but it absolutely strips it of any character and almost takes away the historical element.

    • @PeterHalil
      @PeterHalil  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for your comments. I'm heavily biased, but agree that the lighthouses nowadays seem stripped of the character that I knew and loved. There are not many lighthouses left now I guess where you can still see that majestic sweep of the light that used to be. Cheers and stay safe.

      @@PeterHalil I would like to get 'across the water' to Wales and visit Nash Point. At present that still has it's regular rotating optic with two flashes (I think every 10 seconds). Out of interest would you know why Nash Point continues to flash all day long? No other lighthouse I've seen does this, even Flatholm switches off during the day (which has now also been converted to LED).

    • @PeterHalil
      @PeterHalil  Před 2 lety

      @@ajs2120 With static lenses that don't rotate. as far as I recall, they don't have the great big circular magnifying bulls eye lenses that give the rotating lenses their flash. So they seem ok to just sit there during the day in the sunlight, however, the bulls eyes in the rotating lenses are so powerful that they work in reverse and if stopped, with no Keepers to put the curtains up, can melt stuff or start fires. Clear as mud Lol. cheers.

      Hi David, thank you for the kind words. Yes it was a shame about the engine room. My penultimate light that I served on was at Trevose. Whilst there they demolished the engine room stating subsidence but I never saw any visible reason to do that but when I upload that video, you can judge for yourselves, either way it was a crying shame to have done it, Cheers and stay safe.
