This would definitely make a great what if story. Disney needs to get on the story quick.
Being a brainchild of Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, the Sentry was an astonishingly unique character when thrust onto the scene in the year 2000, and one of such complexity - equally straddling the worlds of the external and internal - that it's been difficult for later creators to replicate the original mini's success. Sigh. The Sentry's capabilities are so underrated, and so underutilized.
P.S. Thanks for a great video abt my all time favorite character!
Sentry being a Superman-esque character makes the whole thing more believable. You totally believe Marvel would have tried to compete with DC back in the day by creating their own Superman.
Sentry is closer to Adam Warlock than Superman.
Superman-esque Marvel characters are Hyperion and Gladiator, as they have nearly identical powers and are jobbers.
We got 3 possibly 4 "Supermen:"
Sentry
Hyperion
Gladiator
maybe Captain Universe
@@3912James also virtue.
@@Aggrofool Hyperion nor gladiator are jobbers, bro. Jobbers ONLY count the lights. Hyperion and gladiator are like, hmm. Let's go with WWE legends, like haku and, let's go with Rick Steiner. They were phenomenal wrestlers, both COULD have been work champ, and you definitely couldn't call THEM jobbers. You respected their power and experience and knew when you went against them, IF YOU WON, IF, you KNOW you earned it.
If you knew Sentry and who he is and what he's capable of then you would know is more of Miracleman than Superman
The original Sentry miniseries and one shots were amazing; it really should've ended there. None of the follow ups have been anywhere near as interesting as that one. I did like the ending of the recent miniseries (at the time that I'm writing this), which merged the Sentry and the Void into one being, but that was almost immediately undone in his next appearance and then he was pointlessly killed off. Marvel really doesn't know what to do with him.
He they can learn from this if they every want to make a movie marvel can just grab the best parts.
@@kingpin1331 it’s a few years old now it’s not that recent
@@kingpin1331 it's old bro, you don't have a argument here
I've never understood the hate Sentry gets as a continuing character. He's interesting as hell when written correctly! Personally I think his role in Dark Avengers was fantastic, I loved the weird friendship with Osborne, so often it was creepy and heartwarming at the same time. When you have Norman Osborne in a position where at least feigning friendship is his only option, and his utter terror that was juuuuust barely visible every few issues, how do you not love that?
That first meeting, where he convinced him to shower and eat a cheeseburger, that was so well done, and Osborne, even in that situation he's kind of a bastard because Sentry's poor wife!
And then the moment of moments when, inevitably, the Void pops up, and OSBORNE BASICALLY ROLLED UP A NEWSPAPER AND SMACKED SENTRY ON THE SNOUT LIKE A MISBEHAVING PUPPY. Holy shit.
"You come to me like a man."
Facts. Jeff Lemire's run was Fire, but Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman were ignorant. Ryan even said they failed there.
He's my all time favourite Marvel character
He's a great dark character. Sadly not many writers use him correctly

That original Jenkins/Lee series is a freaking masterpiece. Few superhero comics touch on such important issues without being too edgy or with so much slightly dark meta humor.
I completely agree with you. The original Sentry series by Paul Jenkins was a masterpiece! Jae Lee’s art style wasn’t just amazing but it gave the book that added feel and tone that worked beautifully with Paul Jenkins’ writing. I love the original Sentry story and how it made you feel like we actually forgot about this amazing Marvel Superhero even though he was such an important “quote unquote” character that no one remembers. The Sentry is a character that I would absolutely love to see in the MCU. I feel like once Marvel brings the Fantastic Four and the XMen to the fold, we might actually start to see characters like the Sentry done in live action. One can only hope right!?

Read Alan Moore’s Miracle Man.
@@arthurrimbaud7287 I’ve heard nothing but great things about Alan Moore’s run on Miracle Man. That’s a book I always wanted to read but I’ve never gotten around to it. Do you know if they sell Moore’s entire run in one omnibus?
With "Didney" owning Marvel, they will destroy Sentry's character. They'll bring in some kind of agenda and ruin him. It's best to not have him in MCU now. It would've been better when there was less to none agenda in the MCU.
Oh. My. God.
The original Sentry series would translate to a perfect entry into the MCU.
My understanding is that Dark Avengers may be coming... We need Sentry.
The Sentry is not a Superman-like character. The character was directly inspired by Miracleman/Marvelman, specifically Alan Moore's run on the character. It's almost a "what if... Miracleman was in the Marvel Universe". And Miracleman/Marvelman is the UK version of the original Captain Marvel aka Shazam. Those comics were literal reprints of US Captain Marvel comics with a name change until Fawcett shut down and the company publishing Marvelman/Miracleman kept their version going. The Sentry's symbol is resembles an S but is also a stylized lightning bolt evoking his hero name but also like the bolt worn on the chest of another hero who changes from human to superhero.
I'm nitpicking, but when people call him Marvel's Superman or on of Marvel's Superman pastiches, it does a disservice to all of the great characters who inspired the character. And yes, I know ultimately Superman inspired Shazam/Captain Marvel's creation but CM did more to inspire Superman than people realize.
I can never forget Sentry in the Avengers comics. He's absolutely terrifying.
Marvel zombies
@@rewindom always wondered where Void was in that
If the MCU is ever daring enough to do a stand alone movie/tv show than Paul Jenkin's Sentry series would be the best choice to make. It's bold, thought provoking, touching and tragic.
@generalbutton2719 Maybe under Marvel Spotlight?
"Lost the static. The gray is gone. I have the power of a million exploding suns." - HORSE the band
His story is so fascinating, and I absolutely love the hoax they did to hype him up. That is just genius and it's crazy they seemingly got away with it.
The concept of a superhero being there at the silver age and having major crossovers with the biggest heroes, then just being erased and forgotten by the world is a great one, and I would love to seem introduced as part of the MCU. To see how he'd be retconned into some of the big movies would be interesting
I personally think the reason why the Sentury has fallen Into Obscurity is because his whole stick being a hero that existed before Marvel silver age lineup has gotten completely overshadowed by the blue marvel/Adam Brashear origin taking the whole superhero who existed before the Fantastic four storyline and did it way better, it also doesn't help that his civilian identity is that of a drug addict which isn't exactly marketable if he were to appear in the MCU he would need an entirely new backstory.
Yeah that reveal that he was just a junkie who broke into the lab to steal stuff to score another fix kinda put a new light on the void. To me it showed that the Void is only there because deep down he knows\knew he was not worthy of his power as he did not take the serum for altruistic reasons but just to get high so the Void is a manifestation of these thoughts. If someone like Steve Rogers had took that Serum there would be no Void...
@@abrashio that’s a really dark twist.
Id say the reason hes fallen behind is because the writers dont exactly know how to deal with his character. Hes a powerhouse so low level enemies would be crumpled up by him, but throwing him at the big bads would just make him a tool and kill the tension of the story. Having him lose to those same guys would make him a jobber tho, so that's not an option either.
To me, his best stories were on his internal struggles, mental health, and how they effected him on the outside. Mental health is important, and sadly that's not sumn sentry has in spades. It's sumn the world struggles with today, so it could be very relatable. My idea for him going forward would be to shine a light again on those issues. But actually get him help and align him with some characters that can do so. Ppl like Peter Parker, doc Samson, hulk(to an extent), Beast, wolverine, iron fist, and even Aunt may.
Have him go to these people every now and then, and even get him a therapist to sit down and talk to, to work his issues out and give him ways of dealing with those fears.
When it gets too much for him? Give him powerful friends like Blue marvel, Thor, hulk, Carol, and Scarlet witch that can restrain him while he fights back against the void, until 1 day he learns that by viewing himself as 2 different people, he is only making things worse. He has to accept the void, but realize that those negative thoughts don't always make him a bad person or mean he has to listen to them.
Mental health is sumn the ppl of today's world struggle with. With things like $uicid3, depression, and teens, young adults and full grown adults finding negative coping mechanisms, a sentry series that focuses on these issues I think will do well. I think the writer should also enlist the help of a therapist for official ways to cope to throw in the book.👍🏾
They would probably ruin him with how toxic Marvel has gotten with the WOKE nonsense.

Wait.... "Nazar"? Is it really you?)
THE SENTRY seems to be modern reinterpretation of Alan Moore’s MIRACLEMAN set within the marvel universe. It’s essentially the same plot. A man upset with his life wakes up and learns that decades earlier he was once the most powerful superhero on the planet. Hell, they even look similar. Moore did MiracleMan in the 80s which was a reboot of the original 1960s series.
I like THE SENTRY and it’s shame that marvel basically had no idea what to do with character. I loved how during the New Avengers, Dark Reign, and Siege era of comics THE SENTRY was a prominent character and a force to be reckoned with. Now he’s been diminished to occasional appearances here and there.
THE SENTRY NEEDS TO RETURN!
Had no idea how elaborate Sentry's build up was! I've always sort of adored sentry especially in his more twisted roles. If he's ever brought to the big screen i sincerely hope they put him in an antagonist role his inner battle with void as well as void's brutality make for some pretty good shock moments in the comics.
They threw in a lot of stuff like the Void and the mental illness and the powers but no logic or explanation for it all, and so the character has been "lost" in so many ways because the audience is lost when he is explained. I would love to see Sentry's pre-amnesia backstory be remembered by the Marvel denizens and see how past Marvel epics would be in retrospect.
I had no idea that they went so far to make people in the real world think they had forgotten about the sentry as a character but that’s incredible marketing and storytelling
I think that this is the first time that I have ever heard anyone say anything remotely positive about Sentry.
That's actually pretty odd. His original miniseries is considered a gem. Mfs you talk to about him must not know as much as they claim
@@wulaeofthetengu8336 Marvel havn't produced anything that can remotely be considerd to be a gem since about 1996.
My friends and I used to have a running inside joke based on the first sentence of the sentry's entry in the marvel wiki: "Robert Reynolds woke up and realized that he was the sentry."
If done right, a live-action adaptation could be awesome.
Never knew about all this, only knew of the Sentry from random crossover appearances.
This makes me hate his pointlessly brutal death in King in Black even more.
Bob deserved better.
I'm pretty sure Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman hate the Character and lie about it. Ryan even admitted to failing when Sentry wasn't Merged with Void in King in Black
Donny Cates hates all heroes that aren’t Venom. See: Sentry, Black Bolt, Thor…
The original miniseries with sentry is really good unfortnately other writers didn't know what to do with the character and really buried this character to the ground literally.
Jeff Lemire didn't. His 2018 run was fire
@@wulaeofthetengu8336 I agree his 2018 run was really good
@@wulaeofthetengu8336 And then Donny Cates buggered it all up with his King in black foolishness.
I’d kill for Sentry to get his own show on Disney+
Maybe, maybe not. I thought about that too but the Sentry is so different and unique in comparison to other Superman-esque characters that I think he would totally work in a Disney+ series not a solo movie outing. As of right now I’m really excited to see what Marvel comes up with for the Moon Knight series and I think eventually down the line the Sentry could work very well as a Disney+ show.
Maybe a standalone movie, to get closer to the structure of the early mcu movies. Also there might not be enough material for a show.
@@archangel5627 introduce sentry with the hulk !!!!
The original Sentry story was great, and the idea of a lost and forgotten "classic" hero is so good, Marvel used the concept a few more times, with characters like Blue Marvel and Voyager.
Also interesting, DC had already done pretty much the same thing with Triumph in the mid 90's, although without much success.
Wow! Never realized how well staged the Sentry's first appearance was. Love the Sentry. Hope to see more of him, if well written.
sentry is like moon knight. In idea it sounds like Superman, but in practice it is a majestic and different thing. great video. By the way, you already mentioned Marvel knights in this video, and I never knew or understood marvel knights and marvel max too much. a video of that would be interesting
I was familiar with the Sentry's in-universe history as a forgotten hero, but I never knew there was a real-world hoax to convince fans he was an actual long-lost Marvel character. What a wild story!
Sentry is right up there with Namor as 2 of the most underrated marvel characters of all time man
I'd like to see a new Avengers team consisting of Moon Knight, Namor, Quick Silver, & Sentry or even a new Justice League team consisting of Red Lion, Cyborg, John Stewart's Green Lantern, & Rocket Red. That would be interesting, I've been wanting to get into Moon Knight & Red Lion for months, less than a year now & Moon Knight is getting his own show next summer, I hope Red Lion gets something of his own soon, might consider getting into Rocket Red & Black Spider after getting into Red Lion. I get that Black Spider is a Batman villain, but that doesn't make me not wanna get into him & Rocket Red. I'd rather wait until I get into Red Lion before all that, so for now, I'll just get into Moon Knight & wait for the chance to get into Red Lion.
@@forrestannis909 I like your ideas man
Why thank you. I'd like to see how both teams will do against Thanos & Darkseid respectively.
This is the BOI
I enjoy this character for the fact that his stories delve into mental health, duality, balance, and confidence.
His final battle in "siege" was fire.
If i could bring him into the mcu, I'd have him resurface during the 5 year time skip, appearing in a long robe to hide himself while helping people. Doing things like clearing roads, removing debris, cleaning out buildings, and helping people find shelter. Even healing the sick/injured.
He hides his face because he doesn't want people to remember him.
It can be explained that the reason he didnt show up during endgame is because if he got deep into the fight, he would enjoy it too much, not hold back, and give the VOID a chance to show up.
I'd have his "death" be later in the mcu, when the VOID takes over due to him not being able to take his depression, anxiety, and schitzoperenia anymore(have it written in that his wife died and his friends were too busy with life to help him through it. Because of this, his desire for fighting came back full force). Void comes out, and it takes 1 of his best friends, an older adult Peter Parker to take him down. But not just any Peter Parker.... Cosmic Spider-man.
Who uses the uni power to tear out the part of Roberts soul that gives him powers and crush it. B4 erasing the universes knowledge of the sentry yet again.
That's how I'd do it anyways🤷🏾♂️
Good lord I remember all this as it happened. Ugh I’m getting old. But thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Love the review didn't know they were was so much history. But I love the dark betrayal of the character
Another excellent video, I’ve always thought the Sentry was a cool idea that Marvel editorial didn’t really know what to do with.I definitely want to pick up the “Age of the Sentry” book that looks really interesting and I’d never heard of it until now! Thank you!
From what little I know, I think it is inspired or parodies a bit of the Superman comics with a Kirby-lee style, it is interesting but I doubt I will find a comic this rare in my country
Only recently read these comics, such a clever idea! Great content for Owen as always!
Hmm...
I wonder if the Sentry's backstory was, at least partially inspired by DC-Comic's Triumph, a former member of the JLA, forgotten by both his team-members and the world.
I was looking for this comment, Triumph was first seen in 1994 in zero hour, and then went on in Justice League for a while , right?
Thank you very much for making this video! The Sentry is such a fascinating character to me. I loved the original miniseries and the New Avengers stories he appeared in as well. Enjoyed his epic showdown with the Hulk during World War Hulk! And he has that really DARK moment during Siege (we all know the one…Siege may be a lackluster event but damn if it didn’t rightly show the Sentry as a force to be reckoned with!!) Appreciate learning more of the history behind this guy. Another fantastic video 👍🏽
I love the concept of the sentry so much
Yeah, I heard Jenkins wanted to do a new take on DCs Hourman. Of course, how can you not notice the comparisons to Marvelman by Moore?
Great video as always. I will definitely check this out.
As a kid, I used to have a Sentry Superhero Squad toy and when I got a bit older, I bought Paul Jenkins’ comicbook rendition of the character and ended up falling in love with it. Everything down to the story, and the way the character was handled was perfect to me. This was one of the first comics I read, so while Sentry may be forgotten, he will always have a special place in my heart.
Not a bad idea, but Mark Waid had already made the same with Triumph at DC.
Thank you so much for making this! I love the sentry as a concept, and I always found it odd how he was given such a prominent position after bendis’ new avengers only to just fall to the wayside after events like planet hulk, Dark reign, Siege etc
The Sentry miniseries is so good. Great video.
Thanks for all the knowledge
I feel like The Sentry is not as well respected because of how he's been handled since this original mini series. These five issues are one of my top three favorite comics of all time. Absolute masterpiece.
Wonderful video spotlighting this as I feel like, much like Bob himself, it has been forgotten.
Dude ur always covering stuff I've always liked and and am finding in the discount bin and have recently reread it's uncanny lol
Hyperion is the true Marvel's Superman.
Very cool. Thanks. Fantastic information.
Would his DC counterpart be Triumph? As both were somehow forgotten.
My thought so as well, though Marvel definitely did more with concept.
Triumph was first and they have very similar backstories.
Nuclear Man or Shazam would be his DC counterpart
Do Triumph from DC next
What a great video. Sentry is the coolest "Superman" MARVEL ever did.
Didn’t Miracleman do this two decades prior?
Missed this at the time, gonna have to check it cos Jae Lee is otherworldly brilliant.
Kind of, I adore Moore's Miracleman run and the Sentry definitely takes a lot of inspiration from it.
currently reading the first Jenkins run, so far so good
Such a shame. An amazing character, underrated and underused.
Awesome video the sentry was the best kept secret of the marvel knights line
it is kind of weird the MARVEL erased the first superhero
Didn't they base the Sentry on a lie? Pretended that the hero was created in the 40s or something and they said they had found found the artwork?
Everyone knew this then. I was looking to read about this again, but this information is conspicuously missing.....at least hard to find.
Thank you for this video.
First half of the video establishes just that
I read that limited run in high school and literally forgot about the Sentry for decades until this moment, so thanks I guess
Yeah I love the Sentry storyline.
15:00 is the editing out of order here, or is it just me?
Great video either way!
I had to give up reading comics just before the first sentry series came out. Thanks for fooling me for twenty years, Wizard! God, they were shady. Great video like all the rest, Owen; thank you------
Wow this is amazing, makes you think if Marvel/Disney could pull up something like this with a Sentry movie
Interesting topic.
It is sad to knowingly get everyone you are friends with forget you. The Sentry to me is awesome in how he sacrifice all he is and has been to save all he loves and be forgotten.
Excelsior! 😊
I really miss The Sentry. He's my favorite hero of all time
Being forgotten is his whole point though, so it’s fine

So sentry was In spider-man: Web of shadows....nice💪🏾
I loved how they went about creating the character and the ruse that they used. I really don't know if they have any plans to give the character an Cinematic introduction (they doing a Moon Knight series which I didn't think they would do), so I am hoping for an onscreen version (although I can understand why some wouldn't like that happen in terms watering down the character).
Thank you I've been playing marvel contest of champions and just got a 5 star sentry so I wanted to know more about him
I can describe the Sentry to be Marvel's forgotten superman due to his struggles with mental health and schizophrenia while trying to control his dark side, the void.
I know Comic fans including myself were disappointed that Marvel Editors made a disabled Black Woman the new Sentry when they should've brought back Robert Reynolds as the Sentry.
I haven't forgotten. Especially his battle against World War Hulk. Which is very iconic for him
his appearance in Moon Knight is epic
The sentry is the Wesley crusher of superheroes
The readers at the time despised him but newer readers don't understand where the hate's coming from
When I read about the Sentry (not a marvel fan but read the dark avengers saga) I think about a character in DC called Triumph. He too is a somewhat tragic character who has a villain aspect as well. But you just want both of them to overcome that and become the hero they should be.
I haven’t forgotten him yet 😪
Bendis wrecked the character. That said, he could be fixed. I haven't read every Sentry comic. Codify exactly what his powers are, drop the idea he's a drug addict, and have the Void as an other worldly beast who corrupted Bob and confused his memories.
I do like the idea that Bob and the Void are the same person, but you could explain away a lot of it by doing a Hal Jordan/Parallax type story. Basically the Void used Bob.
I think they borrowed a lot of ideas for the Sentry from Alan Moore's run on Miracle Man
Sentry is single handily one of the most powerful base characters. When amped he could go toe to toe with cosmic Thor who wrecked galactus
I never knew this awesomesauce ar promotion ever happened, I was fortunate enough to have my comic book clerk Gib who'd tell me : "get this or that" although with Sentry I was just: "oh hey, Paul Jenkins wrote a new book" and grabbed it.
If Marvel really wanted to stick a thumb in DC eye they would do the The Sentry.
There are many people in the comments saying it is a shame he is obscure, but I can't think of anything more fitting.
You should Also talk about Molecule Man.
And forgotten I hope he stays
The Sentry,Captain Planet and Freakazoid(Dexter Douglas) need more Introductions!
Personally, I would love to see Alexander Skarsgård play as the Sentry if the MCU introduces him.
I've been saying that too, plus I want Jason Sudeikis to play Bob Reynolds.
"Rediscovered a forgotten hero"? Alan Moore would appreciate that
Wait that last description about Sentry’s sidekick not remembering at a dinner sounds like the end scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
I do like the Sentry honestly he’s tied with Hyperion for me because Hyperion from earth 712 is Mark Gruenwalds amazing story about the Squadron Supreme and Hyperion is an interesting take on a Superman type while the Sentry gives us and interesting take on Superman having memory loss and and evil version of himself known as the void I love both of them
3 dislikes belong to Void Army
Forget him?
Not after the ass beatings he put on Thor and them😂
I wish i wad reading comics when the hoax was going on that seems like a super fun learning whats going on. By the time i knew who the sentry is he was just another dude on the avengers
Threw me for a loop when it happened. I really fell for it. One of the smoothest moves Marvel ever made.
I hard about sentry and I will get the five issues mini series. 😀👍
I remember when this happened but I was skeptical. Ironically there are tons of characters over the years that have been thrown on the trash heap or given up on. It's too bad they didn't take one of those real failures, inject a little bit of creativity and go with that instead of trying to deceive everyone with a marketing plan. But quite honestly what can you expect from Marvel. I'm a big Marvel fan but trust in the company is something you dare not have. It's better to sift through their enormous library and history and find the treasures within.
I haven't seen the video yet, but...
*I'm just going to say this* , The Sentry is my *FAVORITE* Marvel hero.
Marvel Knight's The Sentry Vs. The Void *is one of the BEST* Marvel comics, period.
However, Marvel has done nothing but nerf, unsuccessfully deconstruct, & nearly destroy the character of The Sentry ever since his debut. *Two steps forward, one step backwards with each appearance* ...
I don't know if I'll ever forgive Marvel, & toxic marvelites for how they destroyed him...
Marvel, most of Marvel's readers, & especially Disney, *just don't understand The Sentry* ...
Sentry's story kind of reminds me of Miracleman in a way
Definitely, you can tell Miracleman (especially Moore's run) was a huge influence on the Sentry.
@@OwenLikesComics ye
Man They used an ARG to promote a character, wish more stuff like this would happen more often.
I hope he never gets into the MCU. Robert’s history could be turned into a really tragic movie about how not believing in yourself and inner conflict can bring you down, no matter how powerful you are. I do not trust the current MCU to create a serious story and deliver a message this important to the cinema.
