  • Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back to the channel!
    I've been wanting to make a toiletries bag - also called a Dopp kit after the inventory, Charles Doppelt - for a while now and I've watched something like 15 or 16 videos from other creators.
    In this video, I distilled what I learned into my own version. Or at least this version, since I plan to make at least two other versions that I think are actually a lot easier. Stay tuned to future videos for those tutorials!
    Here’s a link to the fusible fleece I used: amzn.to/4bJz3cT

If anyone has passed this tutorial up because the zipper sounded too complicated, the purchase of the separating coils zip might be a reason to reconsider!! Happy sewing!

    Well, here's an example of good timing. Yesterday I was at a comic book convention, and a booth there was selling fandom-themed toiletry bags, wallets, etc. I was sorely tempted to buy one, and in the end decided against it (couldn't justify buying something that I could make, even though the one they were selling is more attractive & professional-looking than the pattern I use). Today, in the "for you" section of your channel, was this tutorial showing me how to make the exact bag style I was admiring yesterday. And it's made out of fat quarters! I have lots of those (and 15 more expected in the mail tomorrow, when my Sewers Club subscription box is estimated to arrive). Now I just have to empty a cereal box so I can make the template...but first I'm going to check out your "even easier dopp kit" video. Thanks so much for posting! You've saved me a drive to the convention center and - well, I didn't look at the price but I'm guessing they wanted between $30 and $50 for it, based on similar booths I've seen at other conventions.

      @@timothytotten9409 And I did! My fat quarters were a little undersized due to having shrunk in the prewash, so the binding was made with the outer fabric for the ends & the lining fabric for the corners. I'm already thinking about what fabrics to use for the next one 🙂

    • @katiesanders238
      @katiesanders238 Před 6 měsíci

      @@timothytotten9409 I didn't quilt, but I used decorative canvas from Joanns on all of them. I used 3 layers, one canvas, one of a nylon to waterproof and then a fashion fabric lining as I didn't like the look of the nylon inside. It made for a sturdy bag that held its shape super well after a quick iron without me needing to use any interfacing.

    I have another idea instead of using binding or zigzag to finish the seams especially the corners, it will be a lot easier and quicker and better if we make french seams, sew the seams on the right side, turn inside out and sew the seam allowance trimmed down into a french seam, you know what I mean. Automatically finished without going crazy. I want to try that, you might want to try it too and make a video, what do you think?

    Thank you for your video. I need help creating a bag but for my son to use as a small board games carrier. I’ve watched a lot of videos and when I think I found or figured how to do it I don’t succeed. My bag is tall and wide and narrow. So app 14” high. 13” deep and 3” wide. Or close to that. So the zip goes on top and down both sides and I need to put a little strap that goes across the zip on the side. Maybe 3 1/2”. And a zipper pull on the other side. I wish I could show out a picture but not sure how or where. I would love to line the bag with no seams exposed. But not sewn as 1 piece. Thank you

      I cut the pull tabs at 4" by 2.25". It is the size of the fabric that is taken out of the four cut outs on the pattern. I ended up using only about 3" of each tab after folding them.
      The handle is 4" x 7". Fold in on each long side and then in half to make a 1" wide by 7" handle.

      The overall size is 14” x 18”.
      On the 18” sides, the end tabs are 2.5” wide. Then it drops down 2.25” for a 4” wide opening. The middle tab is 5” wide.
      Basically, measure over 2.5” from each corner on the 18” sides and cut out a 2.25” tall by 4” wide rectangle.
