Ive met guys like this in the projects I grew up in here in Norfolk, VA. Old guys who had a rough life but learned a lot and will have a laugh then buy you some drink any time of the week. Great guys.
Thanks for this made my day me & the wife used to go every Saturday or Sunday for her Baccy& we use to love looking round all the stalls & shops . Brilliant place there and Blochairn are 2 of our favorite places
The model of the horse and cart must be Jock Stockman, the coalman. He'd have been really made up if he had seen that. Nice to see someone remembers him too. Thanks for the upload. Gold !
hahahha, "kin ye give me that screwdriver?" "AYE, av got a lefty handed one" hahaha priceless. I mind a few yearago I was in the barras n was sittin in a wee cafe waitin on ma breaky n a wee guy walked in like , "here , gona give me some burnt toast please", woman was like "put some burnt toast on fur him" then instantly the wee guy turned roon like "nawwww, don't put me burnt toast on, put some bread in the toaster n burn it" :D , classic.
lOVE gLASGOW, My father lived in a single end , corner of Norfolk Street and Dover Street, until he moved to Newcastle during WW2, I went to Glasgow school of Art, Qualified as an architect, and am in Glasgow as often as I can.
Was down there a few montha ago, a shadow of the place it used to be,,,street arra was empty and stalls were nowhere near as many as there used to be,,a real shame and clearly the council are wanting to see it closed as they have done for many years now,, think it on its last legs,, used to love going down there on a weekend.
Went to Barras as a tourist last year. I'd heard about Glasgow being rough but we only had a problem in Barras with some drunk fool. Heard Barras was a must-see for tourists to see the "real Glasgow" but it certainly wasn't the most welcoming place. More like Skid Row in LA but with harder loudmouths and grey skies.
That horse n cart reminds me of a wee poem i always said as a wean at Halloween going round the doors.... Anybody remember this?? Oor wee Jocks a coalman, He works in Maryhill, He gits his pay oan a Friday n buys a half a gill, He goes to the kirk on a Sunday, Half an oor too late, He pulls the buttons aff his shirt and puts them in the plate. Brilliant memories and that was back when we scraped oot a tumshi {{ turnip or SWEDE as they call them }} as a lantern coz there was NAE pumpkins back then lolll
Got some news very recently about Wee John ...... he is still with us / alive ..... but he is not keeping too well .... I am planning to try and go to visit him .....ASAP

This market is simply not what it was. “The Barra’s” you’re speaking of? Long, long gone - even when this was filmed.
