This happened in Indianapolis at the Hoosier Dome during the Stadium Tour. Los Lobos was in the air trying to get to the show. After about an hour of waiting, here comes this "local" band playing unremarkable songs not getting any attention until one of the cameras does a close up on Larry Mullen, Jr. Everybody was now in on the ruse. Los Lobos finally made it to open with a great set. U2 had their concert, opening with "Where the Streets Have no Name" and closing with "40". I can still hear the fans singing in the concourse well after the concert ended.

I was in the nosebleed seats and knew it was them. I had just heard an interview with them and they were asked "If they could be anything else other than a rock band, what would it be?" They answered: A country western band.

I was also at that show in Indy. I recognized fairly quickly that the Dalton Brothers were actually U2 in disguise. I spent about a minute trying to figure out if I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. I finally realized it was actually U2 and told my girlfriend. She didn’t think it was them. So, I told a couple of other people around us. They didn’t know me and they thought I was crazy. So, I stopped telling people and enjoyed their country songs while everyone around me continued to completely ignore the band on the stage. Nobody in the audience cared about these guys. They were only there to see U2. Certainly one of my all-time favorite concert memories.

That is a fond memory. Opening for U2 and the Pretenders at the Oakland Coliseum, the Dalton Brothers. This was before the big Jumbotron monitors. I was standing in the field about 100 feet back. The MC came out and introduced the Dalton Brothers as a band that had huge influence on U2. Everyone was looking around wondering why a country band was playing. Bono aka Alton Dalton said “we play two kinds of music, country and western.” At the 360 tour I had a sign that said “I love Betty Dalton”.

Def Leppard did the same thing in the mid-2000s. They said only a few people in the front row recognized them, too. How can you NOT recognize U2 and Def Leppard by voice, if not looks?

I was there at that show...took a bus from Dayton Ohio which was sponsered by some Dayton radio station. My college roommate was/is a photographer and snuck in a 35mm camera. When they came out as the Dalton Brothers I immediately knew it was them. It was hilarious b/c everyone around me was like NO WAY that was U2 even though I knew it was them. I kept telling them it was. My old roommate took a photo of them opening up as the Dalton Brothers with his snuck in 35mm. Indy show was one of the best concerts i've been to. The week before they were in Lexington KY at Rupp Arena and the concert was cut a little short b/c Bono's voice was going (you could tell Bono was frustrated) and was a little dissapointing b/c no encore and no "40"

The show being referenced in this video is U2 with BoDeans and Los Lobos at the Hoosier Dome in Indy on November 1st, 1987. BoDeans opened the show. Los Lobos was up next, but their plane arrived late and they were not yet in the building. That’s when U2 took the stage as The Dalton Brothers. I was there and recognized them fairly shortly after they took the stage. I told my girlfriend and a few people around us that the band onstage was U2 in disguise. Nobody believed me. I finally stopped talking and enjoyed the moment. Very few people in the audience gave any attention to the band on the stage. Those same people couldn’t wait to see U2. The Dalton Brothers played a few songs and left the stage. Los Lobos arrived a few minutes later and played their set. Then, U2 came back out and played their legendary Joshua Tree concert setlist. Not sure how many people attended that show - probably upwards of 50,000. When U2 took the stage as U2, very few people in the audience had any clue that they were actually seeing U2 onstage for the second time that evening. One of my favorite concert memories.
