  • I love Kentucky. Had a great weekend catching up with friends. Even made a stop at the Buffalo Trace distillery for some fine bourbon. This match was outstanding. Many thanks to Shana and the Bluegrass crew for putting on a decade of fun. Sadly, they announced that this was the last Battle. I hope that someday another club will pick up the torch and give low cap divisions another destination.
Congrats to my CZcams pal Rich Alloway, and to Brent Wiley and Jeff Wallace for passing me by this year. It's been fun watching them progress. Of course I cannot forget my friend and mentor Gary Byerly, who finished 10th just ahead of me. It was even more fun to see that we were all within 3% of one another. A very tight race.
I had an ok match and finished 11th place. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed with my performance though. I shot 95% of points (highest for the match) and no penalties, which is awesome. But the match winners sacrificed points for blazing speed. The math worked out in their favor. I had a number of little unscored errors that really added up. On my first stage, I bumped my safety on during a reload which is a new one. I also had a number of ugly reloads and make ups on steel that cost seconds. Overall I did fine. But I have a lot of work to do this year. Focus will be increasing speed while maintaining consistency. I can do it.

Thank you for posting these videos. As someone who is new to USPSA and getting into SS, watching these helps out a lot.

Robert Smith cool man. Glad you are getting something out of it. Feel free to hit me up with questions. SS is quite a bit more technical than other divisions in my opinion, which is why I love it. But I know it can be daunting when you are getting started.

Very nice shooting!! I have just started shooting classic div IPSC. Just a question about the rules in IPSC... As an example... I couldn't really see what you were doing but at 8:31 are you required to take the finger out of the trigger guard when moving the gun from the target far right and on to the other targets?

Bjarte Nygard, moving the gun from one target to another is called a ‘transition’. During a transition, the goal is to move your eyes to the next target and let the gun follow. As the gun follows, you want to take up the slack in the trigger and be prepared to break the shot as soon as the sights are on target. This is not only compliant with the rules, but expected. The finger should be outside of the trigger guard when you are moving from one position to another and when you are reloading. Or in other words, any time you are not actively engaging targets. I hope this helps.
