  • In this video, I'll show you how to sharpen portrait, landscape or architecture images in Photoshop with a unique variation of high-pass sharpening. This approach prevents the heavy fringing and crunchiness typically caused by the high pass filter and works well for skin texture and other fine details.

    Thanks you very very much Michael for this useful tip and those awesome actions! I will be sharpening my images with your actions from now on. I never really applied overall sharpening; I would only apply sharpening to details like eyes and lips, for example. It might be what my images needed to get the little pop they seemed to miss. Thank you again! :)

    Great tutorial worth trying out and it would definitely save me some time. I always use a highpass filter at 0.3px radius on a 1600px wide (for FB and 500px) image and make 2-3 copies of the highpass layer, set to softlight mode. It does bring out the finest detail without creating large halos, though halos are still there so I group the highpass layers and mask out the halo edges with a brush.

    For Kim Hanskamp
    You will see that when he highlights the High Layer and uses Apply Image on it the Layer used in the calculation is the Low layer. Once he does that the Low layer is deleted. Basically he is using a variance of the Frequency Separation method and is leaving the details / texture which is sharpened.

    Thanks for making this video. At 8:10 of the video, you say that the radius of the surface blur dialog box should be adjusted to "blur out the texture you want to sharpen". I'm a little confused by this. Can you explain this step in a little more detail. Thanks!

      Usually you subtract the blurry layer from a copy of the original to leave just the texture.

    i have the same question as below, do you need to do the low layer as it's being deleted without doing anything to the top layer or am i missing something lol

    • @Mateyhv1
      @Mateyhv1 Před 8 lety +1

      +Lisa Gray Yes, you are missing the "apply image" command where he applies the low layer to the high layer. Once that is done the low layer may go. The technique is similar to frequency separation.

    How shall I evaluate the sharpness provided by a method, if the video showing it is totally unsharp due to low resolution? Furthermore, converting a 16 bit image to a 8 bit image before sharpening does not integrate into most people's workflows.

    • @MichaelWoloszynowicz
      @MichaelWoloszynowicz  Před 10 lety +19

      How about downloading the action and trying it yourself rather than spending time complaining about a free action and tutorial? You can integrate it into a 16 bit workflow pretty easily. Read the comments for a description of how.
