  • This is one of many sharpening techniques, but a personal favorite of mine. A method to bring back detail and texture.

    I use a similar technique for smoothing imperfections while retaining texture detail. I create TWO blur layer groups, and invert one of them like you did. Then, using layer masks, selectively paint in blur or sharpening instead of applying it to the entire image.

    I just tried out this technique: The Surface Blur is heavy for my system but the result is phenomenal.
    The settings suggested in the video worked as intended on my test photo: Subtle but effective.
    Thank you so much for sharing. :)

    Looks really nice Clay, I just have one question since I'm new to the process of coloring in images and want to learn more.
    You have a lot of different layers before you started and the image looked great from the beginning, any chance you can show a movie of that as well?
    Cheers

    Great video Clay! Thanks for sharing. QQ - Do you use the same sharpen method for both print and web?

    Why is this not working on CC 2014? When I put images in folder, and turn folder to overlay, the image does not alter. When I put first image to vivid light and invert, it turns into a nasty inversion. What is the deal?

    For some reason this technique doesn't work for me. As soon as I invert the "Sharpen Vivid" layer, the image looks, well inverted (mostly grey). This inverted look is both visible in the layer icon and in the image itself on the left side. Basically I made a group folder with the blending mode set to "Overlay". In this group folder there are 2 identical layers. The bottom layer has its blending mode set to "Normal", while the top layer has its blending mode set to "Vivid Light". What am I doing wrong (using Photoshop CC by the way)?

    Love this technique! Another great video Clay! Was the backdrop gray or black? How far away was the subject from the backdrop?

    • @claycookphoto
      @claycookphoto  Před 10 lety

      Thanks for watching! The backdrop was a hand painted canvas from Oliphant Studios, it's a dark gray. The subject was about 3-4 feet from the backdrop.

    Hey clay, can you tell what the difference between Color Grading and Color Correction? or they just the same

    • @christinefeaster4102
      @christinefeaster4102 Před 8 lety +1

      +Blackjack. Color Correction is adjusting the colors so the subject is the correct color i.e. how they they would appear under afternoon sunlight (color temperature 5600k). Color Grading is adjusting colors for effect, to create a certain mood for the scene. You generally want to color correct first (use X-Rite Color Passport or something similar) so you have a neutral image to start with, then add color grading for effect.

    I'm not at a computer with Photoshop so I can't try the technique but I just don't get this one thing: How can a blur effect become a sharpening effect just because you invert the colours? I mean, I see in the video that it actually works but... Photoshop, why u no logical?

    • @claycookphoto
      @claycookphoto  Před 10 lety

      There are many things about Photoshop that simply blow my mind, this is one of them. I don't know how it works, it just works!
