hi guys, i think this will give you some more insight into the challenges back when ep was starting out. i don't think people realise how confronting he had it. there was no blueprint, and the world was segregated, but he never saw color. he was into all types of music but grew up dirt poor in tupelo in a black community. to do what he did, in that time took guts. it wasnt american idol, he took some harsh feedback in a society determined to supress him. enjoy i think youll get some new found respect - plus this dispels the rumors that are so wrong about him stealiing black music, and even being racist. he was just like you 2 - a standup guy !! cheers, Matt

Elvis gave plenty of credit. On the 1969 Las Vegas press conference he said I'm not the King, Fats Domino is the King. Just an example of what he said.

@katy5467: I once read an article about re-releases of Elvis Presley albums. 99% of the time his manager never advertised Elvis records because he said: "Elvis sells itself, I don't have to spend any money on advertising"! The result was that in the USA it often only took many weeks to find out that Elvis had released a new record, and in the rest of the world the fans only found out after a year or two. But Elvis records still sold very well in the long term. he was just the king.
Many people complain about Elvis being called The King, but that isn't a title he gave himself, it's the title that everyone else gave him. He considered himself to be an average singer

I applaud whoever originally edited and shortened the show to make this “black community” video! It has caused many people change their minds about Elvis, who would never have watched the original show.

I have never heard a bad word about Elvis from his fellow musicians or people who worked with him in the movies, or interviewed him. Many of us saw him on early tv in the 50%, we were as young as 3-4 years old. My parents were watching, they were about his age. I’ll never forget how that man not only got my full attention, something gripped my spirit/soul... and that touch never left! Just from tv as a very young child. Still in black and white, no color in the 50’s. Techno color came out in the 60’s. Of course you had to buy a color TV set.

To me, it's not stealing, if you say where you got it, from!! Look it.... They made a black "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", CeeLo Green sampled a song, from "Annie", they made a black "Little Mermaid"; they made a black "Wizard of Oz".... And the list goes on and on.... Does anybody holler about them being stolen? No!! Another thing you were right about, Suzi, is that everybody influences, gets inspiration from, somebody else!!! My Dad who was born in 1922 in Mississippi would say about music is that it would bounce from one american culture into another and make it better. Like Gumbo ( he loved cajun and creole food) wouldn't be the same without the African, Latin and European flavors combining in that pot and it never comes out identically.

I'm sure you knew the first person that spoke about ELVIS, was the big AL GREEN! WOW! I loved Al Green! The last person was B.B. KING, who is a legend, on his own! They were very good friends and both were from Mississippi! B.B. KING has lived there most of his life! ELVIS , of course moved from Tupelo, Mississippi, around age 12 or 13, when his family moved to Memphis, looking for work!

The small documentary called “The King of Kindness” tells us how Elvis changed the scourge of polio by going on TV and getting vaccinated and recommending the vaccine to everyone. The vaccination rate went from 10% to 80% in a few months and helped eradicate polio in the USA. He was also a big donor to Easter Seals. Everyone should watch this video too.
There are hundreds or thousands of statements from people who met Elvis Presley personally (no matter what culture or skin color): 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% only say good things about Elvis Presley. An employee and good friend of Elvis Presley once said: "Elvis really loved people"! I think that anyone who says something bad about Elvis is a liar or just jealous. I have never heard or read anything bad about Elvis from people who knew him personally. I think he really was an angel.

- - - - Sociologists & Historians have always credited him with doing 2 things: Mixing White Country Music with Black Rhythm & Blues Music and created a NEW music, as well as being the sole reason why American Music (and globally) was DE-segregated.
Missing from this documentary is the other genres (Bluegrass, Classical, Opera, Traditional European Hymns, Spanish Music, etc which had an equal impact on the evolution of our music, as well as Elvis. Modern views of music always exclude other sources beyond R&B, but as noted, Rock & Roll had more than 1 genre influence it.

Bing Crosby had a big hit with White Christmas right around the time that Elvis was getting more popular... Bing didn't like it when Elvis recorded his version of White Christmas... Bing was very vocal about it until he saw how many records of White Christmas Elvis sold...Bing profited from that as well and when asked about it , he said, "That boy can really sing that song can't he ?"... lol...

❤ The 50’s & ‘60’s in the US was so damned racist but here in Australia it was worse! You had segregation but here our Indigenous community were seen as nothing more than animals…they had no rights at all, their children were stolen, they could not frequent any establishment (shops, pubs etc.) and they were placed in “communities” led by Caucasian churches. I’m a Caucasian Australian, also part of the “stolen generation” of children stolen from their parents by the government, and I am still disgusted with the way others that are different, be it via skin colour, religion etc. are treated abominably by governments and others! Elvis was way beyond his time by sticking to his own beliefs and not those of the general public and the government.
It's so disgusting what people, who believe they are the better " race" , are able to do.

Swinging your hips when you dance was considered sexual back then, and teenagers were not allowed to express sexual feelings. Was considered dirty by many parents. Rock and roll Music came from Rhythm and blues. There were blues clubs located off the main roads in rural parts of the country and some of them also featured lots of drinking and even prostitution and maybe even strippers. There were plenty of blues songs that had suggestive sexual content. Even many black church going families did not consider this type of music to be respectable and discouraged their children from listening to it. Rhythm and Blues music was considered to be black music and was played on black radio stations and not white radio stations. And black music was blamed for Corrupting the youth with sexual content. In the mid Fifties, this started to change, and black artists started to get more and more airplay on so-called "White" radio stations. Elvis helped to bring awareness to black music and to popularize it more fully. While some white youth listened to artists like Little Richard and Chuck Berry, many did not know about or have access to this music. Elvis made his versions and got them played on mainstream stations and it made these artists even bigger than they might have been had not Elvis helped to break down racial barriers in music.

Elvis always gave credit to the Black performers who inspired his style, which came from both the Black churches he attended and the White holy rollers church he also attended. Little Richard said [ I paraphrase here] that Elvis kicked down the door for Black artists to follow.
Elvis has said he his style of singing was inspired by a black singer named Roy Hamilton,whom Elvis admired a lot,I have listened to some of Roy's songs and I can hear Elvis's style in them for sure.
There was no singular singer who influenced him. He admired Roy Hamilton as much as Roy Orbison, Dean Martin, Mario Lanza etc.

I'm an Elvis fanatic I also really love the sounds of Chuck Berry Sam Cook Otis Redding etc but here's my problem with this I'm tired of hearing how he stole rock n roll when the fact of the matter is if you listen to most of the original artists recordings songs he did they are much slower and bluesy Elvis rocked them out so why can't everyone just agree that it was a group effort that apparently worked out to everyone's favor so yes he was and is the king of rock n roll I don't hear anyone bitching about James Brown being the Godfather of Soul or Michael Jackson being the KingOf Pop and the man was the farthest thing from a racist as you can get he grew up in the ghetto
Totally agree. And the really crazy part is if you use someone else's music, they get paid royalties. I know as I worked in the industry. Music copyright is strong, stronger than patents. So any time he performed someone else's music, the song writer was paid a royalty. Many of them made tons of $ when he covered their songs.
I never understood the nonsense that Elvis stole rock n roll. I don't know a single Elvis fan who said that Elvis invented rock n roll (no one ever said that). Historically speaking, if I am correctly informed, Bill Haley invented rock n roll. Elvis Presley made rock n roll famous worldwide. I don't know a single musician from Elvis' time who said anything bad about it. On the contrary: everyone only said good things about Elvis Presley. This is a fact and you can read it (it is well documented). an info: The media in the 60s already called Elvis Presley "King of Pop"! There are also original reports from the 1960s. There are some music historians who see Elvis Presley as the inventor of pop music. Before Elvis, the term “pop music” didn’t even exist.

Once a song is out there, anyone can record it, rearrange it, etc. "Covering" a song means to record it AFTER the original artist ALREADY HAD THEIR OWN HIT with it. The fact that Elvis often did it better than the originals he covered (as well as making changes to the songs) was a sore point with the original artists.
I'm not sure if you guys have watched Ruby Leigh on The Voice you need to watch her audition it's the most ever viewed audition in voice history . She's a 16 year old kid you need to hear her and she does an Elvis song later on and she doesn't try to sound like Elvis but that girl tore the roof off the place with it. Her audition she sing a song almost a hundred years old and rip the roof off the place.

Elvis had his first hit "Thats Alright Mama" in 1954.
Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bo Diddiley all had their first hits in 1955. ELvis was influenced by Big Boy Crudup, Willie DIxon, Muddy Waters etc from blues... One thing that seems to be ignored is Rock and Roll was not just blues-it was a combination of country, blues, pop of the era and gospel music. All 4 of these became rock and roll.
BUT he was also influenced by Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow, Hank WIlliams etc from country music.
And influenced by Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and others from pop music of the era
NOT to forget he was born in Tupelo Mississippi and lived on the poor black side of town where he went to black and white churches and loved gospel music. He "organically" was drenched in the black culture of the south,
I must point out that Chuck Berry was influenced greatly by country artists-his first hit "Maybelline" was actually a country artist Bob Wills song from the 40s "Ida Red" that Chuck wrote new lyrics for and sped up.
No one says Chuck stole from country-he was influenced by country.
Ray Charles had several hits with "cover versions" of country songs-some of the first music he heard as a child was from the "
